  10/19/19 - Alex UsryrSr/2023, Middle Tennessee, 5-10, 185 (DS#999 K) + More +

Terrence Wilson ran for the winning touchdown and Alex Usry kicked four field goals as Charleston Southern beat North Alabama 25-20 on Saturday night. Wilson carried six times for just 23 yards, but his 8-yard TD run late in the fourth quarter gave the Buccaneers (2-5, 1-1 Big South Conference) the winning edge. Jack Chambers had 126 yards passing and Jamari Dunbar ran for 123 yards on 28 carries for the Buccaneers.

Chambers threw an interception early in the first quarter that was returned 62 yards for a North Alabama score. Charleston Southern answered with an Usry 24-yard field goal, and Jarrod Stanley's interception set up a touchdown throw from Chambers to Garris Schwarting three plays later. Usry added a 35-yard field goal and the Buccaneers led 13-11 at halftime. Usry kicked two more field goals in the second half, from 26 and 52 yards, to lead 19-17 early in the fourth. But Joe Gurley kicked his second field goal for the Lions (2-5, 0-1) after that and North Alabama took a 20-19 edge. Wilson's scoring run with 6:57 remaining put Charleston Southern back on top and Darin Smalls picked off Christian Lopez with under two minutes left to seal the win. Lopez had 206 yards passing but threw three interceptions for the Lions. - AP College Football

Usry added a 31-yard field goal in the fourth stanza. Also nominated for Special Teams Player of the Week: Isaac Foster (Kennesaw State) and Matt Mosquera (Monmouth). - Big South Football

North Carolina State is changing quarterbacks and will start Bailey Hockman this week against Syracuse. Coach Dave Doeren said Monday that Hockman and backup Devin Leary "are giving us more in the pass game." Former starter Matthew McKay is listed as the third-stringer for the Wolfpack (3-2, 0-1 Atlantic Coast Conference). McKay started the first five games but was replaced by Hockman after three series of the 31-13 loss at Florida State. McKay completed 3 of 7 passes for 20 yards before Hockman took over and was 21 of 40 for 208 yards with a touchdown. Leary completed 4 of 5 passes for 54 yards after Hockman, who started his career at Florida State, tweaked his knee late. - AP College Football

OCT 7/WEEK 6 C-USA DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Middle Tennessee senior S Jovante Moffatt turned in a career-high 13 solo tackles against Marshall in the C-USA opener, finishing with 14 total tackles to lead the Blue Raiders in the 24-13 win. Moffatt was making plays all over the field, as he also hauled in his first two interceptions of the season. The first pick set up Middle Tennessee's first touchdown in the opening quarter, and his second one sealed the win in the fourth quarter. The Union City, Tennessee, native also snuffed out a fake field goal on a fourth-and-10 attempt from the Blue Raiders 27-yard line early in the fourth quarter, stopping the play five yards short of a first down. Moffatt now has 26 tackles in the last two games combined after registering 12 stops at No. 14 Iowa last week. - Conference USA Football

Asher O'Hara threw for 261 yards, ran for 76 yards and Jovante Moffatt had two interceptions and Middle Tennessee beat Marshall in a 24-13 win on Saturday. Middle Tennessee (2-3) never trailed in the Conference USA opener for both teams. Each squad exchanged touchdowns in the first quarter, and each made subsequent field goals, and the score was tied at 10. But O'Hara's 4-yard TD run capped a 6-play, 53-yard drive that put the Blue Raiders ahead for good with 3:42 left before halftime. O'Hara capped the scoring with a 36-yard touchdown pass to Zack Dobson with 12:43 to play. Moffatt picked off Isaiah Green on Marshall's (2-3) first play of its second drive. He picked off Green again on the Thundering Herd's second-to-last drive of the contest. Green threw for 365 yards and a touchdown but had three interceptions. - Middle Tennessee/AP College Football

Martell Pettaway couldn't remember the last time he spent an entire game watching from the sideline, never once getting onto the field after warmups - much less getting a carry. That was the case for West Virginia's senior running back a week ago. But after the game-plan precluded him from seeing any action in a win over North Carolina State, Pettaway made up for it on his very first carry Saturday. He shook a couple Kansas defenders at the line of scrimmage, broke into the open and ran 23 yards for a third-quarter touchdown. Pettaway added another score in the fourth quarter, helping the Mountaineers squeak out a 29-24 victory over the Jayhawks in the Big 12 opener for both teams.

"The two touchdown runs he had were big-time plays," said West Virginia coach Neal Brown, who leaned on running backs Kennedy McCoy and Leddie Brown against the Wolfpack. "Martell had a good week of practice and that's the kind of guy he can be." McCoy added 73 yards rushing and a touchdown for the Mountaineers (3-1). Kendall Austin threw for 202 yards, and Evan Staley bounced back from an early miss to hit three field goals. Meanwhile, their defense held Kansas (2-2) to 377 yards total offense, one week after new coach Les Miles' bunch had 567 yards and five TDs in a road rout of Boston College. And much of the yardage Saturday came as the Jayhawks drove frantically for a touchdown with 2:10 left in the game. - West Virginia/AP College Football

WEEK 2 C-USA DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Middle Tennessee junior S Reed Blankenship single-handedly created both of Tennessee State's turnovers in Middle Tennessee's 45-26 home opening win. In addition to a pair of interceptions, Blankenship led all tacklers with nine total tackles, including seven solo takedowns. With the Tigers at fourth and goal on their first drive, Blankenship maintained coverage on a trick play and came down with the jump ball to give MT the ball.

In the second quarter, TSU drove down the field, but Blankenship read the quarterback and made another athletic play in the end zone to intercept a second Tiger pass. The Athens, Alabama native now has eight career interceptions, two shy of being tied for eighth-most in program history. The win over Tennessee State was his second career game with multiple interceptions, with the first coming in last year's New Orleans Bowl. - Conference USA Football

Middle Tennessee head coach Rick Stockstill announced Sunday the permanent captains for the Blue Raiders in 2019. Safety Reed Blankenship, linebacker Khalil Brooks, defensive tackle Malik Manciel, safety Jovante Moffatt and running back Terelle West, were honored as the 14th group of permanent captains in the FBS era at Middle Tennessee. The team voted on the five captains, and Coach Stockstill made the announcement during a team meeting Saturday morning.

"This is the ultimate honor when your teammates make you a permanent captain for the season," said Stockstill. "These five guys have meant a lot to this program and all are very deserving. It's not just your play on the field but the way you conduct yourself off the field and how you lead and push your teammates. When your peers give you a vote for the way you practice every day and compete on the field and in the classroom there is not a better honor out there." - MTSU Football
