As Memphis allowed Houston to score on all three of its fourth-quarter drives during its comeback win Friday, the Tigers' defense was without its leader and captain in All-AAC safety Quindell Johnson. Johnson didn't play in the fourth quarter due to an undisclosed injury. Coach Ryan Silverfield said he's "day-to-day" for the Tigers' (4-2, 2-1) game at East Carolina (3-3, 1-2) on Saturday (6:30 p.m., ESPNU).

Johnson recorded his third interception of the season in the first half but also missed time during the third quarter before sitting out for good. He finished with just one tackle, his fewest of the season. Johnson is the Tigers' best defensive player and several NFL scouts, along with representatives from the Reese's Senior Bowl, were watching him during pregame warmups against Houston. He leads the team in interceptions and is second in tackles behind linebacker Xavier Cullens. He and Cullens shared the team lead with four takeaways this season. Without Johnson, Memphis gave up 186 yards - including 147 by passing - in the fourth quarter as Houston scored 26 points to rally for a 33-32 win. - Memphis Commercial Appeal

Seth Henigan threw two touchdowns, Brandon Thomas rushed for two scores, Memphis' defense scored twice and the Tigers beat North Texas 44-34 on Saturday. Henigan's 18-yard scoring pass to Javon Ivory with 11:50 before halftime the gave Memphis a 13-10 lead and the Tigers (3-1) never trailed again. The start of each quarter following halftime helped contribute to the Mean Green's demise. Jaylon Allen returned an Austine Aune pass, which bounced off the hands of his intended receiver, fielded it at the 37-yard line and raced down the right sideline for a 27-13 lead to start the third quarter. After drawing within 27-20 to start the fourth, Xavier Cullens intercepted Aune - again at the North Texas 37 - and raced to the end zone for a two-touchdown advantage. Memphis led by double figures for the remainder. Aune threw for 371 yards and three touchdowns for North Texas (2-3). - Memphis/AP College Football

Seth Henigan threw for 415 yards and two touchdowns and Memphis led all the way in a 37-13 win over Navy on Saturday in an American Athletic Conference opener. The Tigers (1-1, 1-0) entered not having won a conference opener since beating Navy 35-23 in 2019. Henigan completed passes to eight different receivers, and half his 24 completions went to Javon Ivory and Gabriel Rogers. Ivory had seven catches for 89 yards and Rogers caught five for 95.

The highlight play, however, occurred when Henigan threw a 79-yard touchdown to Joseph Scates who got behind the defense, caught it in stride and raced untouched into the end zone. It was Scates' only reception of the day. The play gave the Tigers a 20-7 lead with 11:56 left in the third quarter. Memphis built a 10-0 lead in the first before Navy quarterback Tai Lavatai threw a 62-yard scoring pass to Anton Hall Jr. Lavatai later ran it in from the 1 capping a 21-play, 74-yard drive that lasted 11:23 spanning the third and fourth quarters to reduce Navy's deficit to 23-13. - Memphis/AP College Football

Blake Watson scored on a 1-yard run with 33 seconds to play and Old Dominion beat Virginia Tech for the second time in as many tries on its home field, 20-17 on Friday night. The Monarchs made a big splash in their debut as a member of the Sun Belt Conference and spoiled the debut of Hokies coach Brent Pry. He was coaching against a longtime colleague at Vanderbilt and Penn State, Ricky Rahne. When it was over, as they had in 2018 when the Monarchs knocked off the then-No. 13 Hokies 49-35, fans streamed on to the field in celebration. ODU is 2-12 in its history against Power Five programs, but 2-2 against Tech.

Keshawn King ran for 111 yards and caught a touchdown pass from transfer quarterback Grant Wells for the Hokies. Wells also ran for a score, but threw two first-half interceptions, and then one to set up the decisive drive. The Hokies were driving and trying to put the game away when Wells' pass from ODU's 40 bounced off of Jalen Holston to the Monarchs' Ryan Henry. A 15-yard penalty against ODU moved the ball back to their 26 with 2:58 left, but a long completion by Hayden Wolff and then a defensive pass interference call near the goal line on Dorian Strong set the Monarchs up at the 1-yard line. Watson needed two tries to make it, but tumbled in with 33 seconds left. - Old Dominion/AP College Football
