As Memphis allowed Houston to score on all three of its fourth-quarter drives during its comeback win Friday, the Tigers' defense was without its leader and captain in All-AAC safety Quindell Johnson. Johnson didn't play in the fourth quarter due to an undisclosed injury. Coach Ryan Silverfield said he's "day-to-day" for the Tigers' (4-2, 2-1) game at East Carolina (3-3, 1-2) on Saturday (6:30 p.m., ESPNU).

Johnson recorded his third interception of the season in the first half but also missed time during the third quarter before sitting out for good. He finished with just one tackle, his fewest of the season. Johnson is the Tigers' best defensive player and several NFL scouts, along with representatives from the Reese's Senior Bowl, were watching him during pregame warmups against Houston. He leads the team in interceptions and is second in tackles behind linebacker Xavier Cullens. He and Cullens shared the team lead with four takeaways this season. Without Johnson, Memphis gave up 186 yards - including 147 by passing - in the fourth quarter as Houston scored 26 points to rally for a 33-32 win. - Memphis Commercial Appeal
