  05/19/22 - Aaron GravesSr/2026, Iowa, 6-4, 300 (DS#9 DT) + More +

Athletically, Graves is one of the most prolific to come out of Iowa in recent memory. At 6-foot-5 and 265 pounds, he made a name as a dominant two-way lineman for Southeast Valley High. He'll play defensive line for the Hawkeyes and his football resume includes two All-Iowa Elite team selections by the Des Moines Register. This fall, he led the way to Southeast Valley's first state championship in 2021. But that's not all. Graves is a four-sport athlete. He's the school's all-time leading scorer in basketball (1,356 points), all-time leader in shot put in track and field (52 feet, 2 inches) and is a two-time district champion and two-time fourth place finisher in the state wrestling finals.

Graves committed to Iowa in 2019 as a freshman and never wavered. He's the second-highest rated prospect in their 2022 class as a four-star recruit and the No. 128 player in the country, according to 247sports. His short recruitment closed the door on other likely Power 5 offers. Graves was never in the attention that with being a major recruit. He approached the recruiting process with the same business-like approach that he does in the classroom. "I could be a two-star or a five-star and I don't think it would change how good I really am to myself," Graves said. "My buddies always tell me that I could've went on all of these visits around the country and it's like, "Yeah, but I knew where I wanted to go since I was young so I didn't see the need to waste my time or any coaches' time." "I committed (to Iowa) right then when I go the offer and didn't look back." - Iowa City Press-Citizen

  05/17/22 - Sam LaPortaSr/2023, Iowa, 6-3, 245 (DS#5 TE) + More +

LaPorta's much-anticipated senior year will involve a new position coach. Abdul Hodge joined Iowa's staff in March as tight ends coach after offensive coordinator Brian Ferentz moved from tight ends to quarterbacks. LaPorta sees qualities in Hodge that "we can all strive to do a little bit more." "He's analyzing things all the time, picking my brain," LaPorta said. "I pick his brain as well. He's a guy that sets his ego aside. He never lets his pride get in the way. If he needs to ask a question … he's willing to do that."

Hodge, who played and coached at linebacker, has brought some of his defensive expertise to the offense. "As an older guy, I feel like I have a pretty good understanding of the offense and the scheme that we're trying to run," LaPorta said, "so getting input from him as to what the defense is trying to do to stop us I think has helped me understand our defense." At the same time, LaPorta has plenty of respect from Hodge. "The transition that I think he's going to take now is a transition to be also a great leader on our team," Hodge said in March. "He's got his head down. He's working on a consistent basis to get better. He's really conscious of little details." - The Gazette

The arrest happened at 2:46 a.m. Sunday at the intersection of Riverside Drive and Myrtle Avenue in Iowa City, according to the Iowa City Police Department. The officer said Harris, who was driving a 2015 red Dodge Dart, was stopped for driving without headlights and had bloodshot eyes, impaired speech and balance and "smelled of ingested alcohol."   03/05/22 - Tyler LinderbaumrJr/2022, Iowa, 6-2, 302 (DS#1 C) + More +

Tyler Linderbaum's approach to the NFL Draft isn't much different from his approach at Iowa. "The biggest thing for me is being myself," Linderbaum said Thursday at the NFL Combine. "I'm not trying to change who I am once I get here. I'm here for a reason, and that's just because I've been being myself." Even after suffering a mid-foot sprain that will keep him out of the combine drills, he wouldn't change his decision to play in the Citrus Bowl. "I'd play in that game if I could," Linderbaum said. "Hopefully go out and win." Linderbaum had the same even-keel demeanor in his media availability as he had throughout the season. He's doing the work in the same place he's been for four years. While many draft prospects spend their pre-draft months with trainers in places like Texas or Florida, Linderbaum has been preparing at Iowa's football facility. "If it ain't broke, don't fix it," Linderbaum said. Linderbaum said strength and conditioning coach Raimond Braithwaite has "a lot of great knowledge," and Braithwaite's staff has not made any significant changes from what he was already doing. - The Gazette

  03/04/22 - Tyler LinderbaumrJr/2022, Iowa, 6-2, 302 (DS#1 C) + More +

Linderbaum is widely considered the top center in this year's draft class. While relatively small at 6-foot-3 and 290 pounds, his lateral quickness and technique have helped his draft stock. He won't be worrying too much about whether he'll be a top-10 pick. "I'll let all the coaches and GMs and all those guys decide if they think I'm a top-10 player in the draft," Linderbaum said. Linderbaum also doesn't have to worry about it too much when NFL general managers think as highly as they do of the former Solon prep. Ravens general manager Eric DeCosta described Linderbaum as the "type of guy that could really be the centerpiece of your offensive line" and compared him to Yanda. "When we look at a guy like Tyler Linderbaum, we see a lot of the same qualities," DeCosta said Wednesday. "Tough. Gritty. Very, very athletic. Very, very intelligent. Smart." Linderbaum already has met formally with several NFL teams, including the Packers, Giants, Jets, Dolphins, Bears and Bengals. - The Gazette

Spencer Petras plunged 2 yards for a touchdown with 2:58 left to give 17th-ranked Iowa its first lead, and the Hawkeyes came back from a 15-point deficit in the third quarter to beat Nebraska 28-21 on Friday. Iowa won the border battle for the seventh straight year, but not before Jermari Harris intercepted Logan Smothers' pass at the Iowa 2 with 43 seconds to play. The Hawkeyes (10-2, 7-2) stayed alive in the Big Ten West race and now need Minnesota to beat Wisconsin on Saturday to go to the conference championship game next week in Indianapolis.

The loss was another gut punch to Nebraska (3-9, 1-8) in its worst season since 1957. The Cornhuskers, who won't go to a bowl for a fifth straight year, finished with losses in six straight games and eight of nine. Their nine losses were by a total of 56 points. Tyler Goodson ran for 156 yards on 23 carries to become Iowa's first 1,000-yard rusher since Akrum Wadley in 2017. Smothers, making his first start in place of the injured Adrian Martinez, threw for 199 yards and ran 24 times for 64 yards and two touchdowns. Iowa used a blocked punt returned for a touchdown, two field goals and a safety to wipe out a 21-6 deficit and tie it 21-21 with 7:21 left. - Iowa/AP College Football

Charlie Jones had a 100-yard kickoff return for No. 18 Iowa's first touchdown and the Hawkeyes went on to beat Illinois 33-23 on Saturday. Iowa (9-2, 6-2 Big Ten) was trailing 10-0 in the first quarter when Jones took the kick near the right corner of the end zone and ran through a hole on the left side for the score. Iowa wide receiver Arland Bruce IV had a 2-yard run for a touchdown and Caleb Shudak kicked four field goals, including a 51-yarder in the second quarter. Linebacker Jack Campbell's 32-yard interception return for a touchdown with 1:36 to play closed the Hawkeyes' scoring. Illinois' Brandon Peters threw a 13-yard touchdown pass to tight end Luke Ford to end a 12-play, 75-yard drive that took 6:23 to start the game. But the Illini (4-7, 3-5) had just 9 yards on 10 plays in their next three possessions. James McCourt had three field goals for the Illini.

Tyler Goodson ran for 132 yards for the Hawkeyes, his third 100-yard game of the season. Alex Padilla, making his second start, was just 6 of 17 for 83 yards. Peters, who threw a 16-yard touchdown pass to Isaiah Williams in the closing seconds, was 16 of 36 for 248 yards. Illinois' Chase Brown, who was averaging 106.4 rushing yards per game, was held to 42 yards on 13 carries. Iowa extended its winning streak against the Illini to eight games. The Hawkeyes have won 13 of the last 14 in the series. Illinois was playing without head coach Bret Bielema, who tested positive for COVID-19 earlier in the week. Assistant head coach George McDonald was the interim head coach. - Illinois/AP College Football
