 Aaron Graves, Iowa, Player News

  06/10/22 - DT Aaron GravesJr/2026, Iowa, 6-4, 293 (DS#8 DT) + More +

Incoming Iowa football freshman Aaron Graves' list of accolades has already solidified him as one of the best athletes in state history. On Wednesday, he received an honor that put him in a class of his own. Graves was named the MaxPreps Male Athlete of the Year nationally. Graves joins a list of past winners that include NFL superstars Derrick Henry, Patrick Mahomes and Kyler Murray and NBA players Lonzo Ball and Jalen Sugges. Graves is the first Iowan to win the award.

A quick glance at his resume explains why he was the recipient. Graves is a four-sport athlete at Southeast Valley High School. He's the school's all-time leading scorer in basketball (1,356 points), all-time leader in shot put in track and field (52 feet, 2 inches) and is a two-time district champion and two-time fourth-place finisher in the state wrestling finals. In his primary sport, football, Graves led Southeast Valley to the state championship as an All-American two-way lineman. With his most notable high school award in hand, Graves will officially enroll at Iowa this weekend and will look to crack the Hawkeyes' defensive line rotation as a freshman. - Iowa City Press-Citizen

  05/19/22 - DT Aaron GravesJr/2026, Iowa, 6-4, 293 (DS#8 DT) + More +

Athletically, Graves is one of the most prolific to come out of Iowa in recent memory. At 6-foot-5 and 265 pounds, he made a name as a dominant two-way lineman for Southeast Valley High. He'll play defensive line for the Hawkeyes and his football resume includes two All-Iowa Elite team selections by the Des Moines Register. This fall, he led the way to Southeast Valley's first state championship in 2021. But that's not all. Graves is a four-sport athlete. He's the school's all-time leading scorer in basketball (1,356 points), all-time leader in shot put in track and field (52 feet, 2 inches) and is a two-time district champion and two-time fourth place finisher in the state wrestling finals.

Graves committed to Iowa in 2019 as a freshman and never wavered. He's the second-highest rated prospect in their 2022 class as a four-star recruit and the No. 128 player in the country, according to 247sports. His short recruitment closed the door on other likely Power 5 offers. Graves was never in the attention that with being a major recruit. He approached the recruiting process with the same business-like approach that he does in the classroom. "I could be a two-star or a five-star and I don't think it would change how good I really am to myself," Graves said. "My buddies always tell me that I could've went on all of these visits around the country and it's like, "Yeah, but I knew where I wanted to go since I was young so I didn't see the need to waste my time or any coaches' time." "I committed (to Iowa) right then when I go the offer and didn't look back." - Iowa City Press-Citizen
