  07/29/22 - ZeVian CapersrSr/2026, Gardner-Webb, 6-4, 190 (DS#999 WR) + More +

Auburn's wide receiver corps will be one of the more intriguing groups to watch in fall camp, given what the Tigers lost from last year's roster, what they bring back and what they've added to the room. Shedrick Jackson may be the most proven of the bunch, given his years of experience and that he's the team's leading returning receiver, but last year was his first truly impactful season on the Plains. The Tigers also bring back Ja'Varrius Johnson, who started a handful of games last season but has seen his first few years hampered by injuries, as well as Malcolm Johnson Jr., who also earned a handful of starts in 2021 and has shown glimpses of being a downfield playmaker but just doesn't have a lot of in-game experience.

Auburn also returns a handful of other players from last season, including Tar'Varish Dawson Jr., who earned a starting job in fall camp a year ago but never saw the field after a preseason setback. He has been a different player this offseason, according to Harsin, and could carve out a role in the passing game this fall if he continues his upward trajectory. Ze'Vian Capers is another returning option who has progressed and could emerge as that bigger, longer target Auburn has lacked in the passing game. - Birmingham News

2022 PRESEASON BIG SOUTH OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR (COACHES/MEDIA): Narii Gaither, Sr., RB, Gardner-Webb (Rock Hill, S.C.),...Gaither is Gardner-Webb's first Big South preseason Offensive Player of the Year honoree since 2017 (QB Tyrell Maxwell) and just the second overall. A First-Team All-Conference performer in 2021, Gaither led the Big South last season with 991 rushing yards and 132.8 all-purpose yards per game. He ranked ninth nationally in all-purpose yards, and led the Runnin' Bulldogs with 42 receptions -- just one of two running backs in the country to lead his team in rushing yards and receptions.

Gaither scored 12 total touchdowns a season ago (seven rushing, five receiving), had a league-leading five games with 100+ rushing yards, as well as two games with more than 200 all-purpose yards. He enters this season needing 521 rushing yards for 2,000 in his career, and 37 catches to break the Big South career record for most receptions by a running back. Gaither received six first-place votes and 27 total points in the Preseason Offensive Player of the Year voting, ahead of Campbell quarterback Hajj-Malik Williams (two first-place votes and 18 points) and Robert Morris running back Alijah Jackson (one first-place vote and 13 points). - Big South Football

  07/01/22 - Narii GaitherrSr/2024, Gardner-Webb, 5-08, 179 (DS#82 RB) + More +

If Gardner-Webb could go back in time, it might bring its 2022 offensive unit with them. Particularly to Sept. 7, 2013, at Joan C. Edwards Stadium, where it ran into a buzz saw in the Thundering Herd, dropping the contest 55-0 in their only meeting in program history. One thing the Bulldogs lacked in that game is exactly one of their biggest strengths in 2022: an offense with plenty of experienced firepower. But can Gardner-Webb turn that potential into results by the time it arrives in Huntington in Week 5 of the college football season? If a senior quarterback, running-back duo and a highly touted 2022 recruiting class have anything to say about it, the answer might be a resounding "Yes."

The offense starts with Bailey Fisher, who completed nearly 60% of his throws in 2021, amassing 2,300 yards and tossing 18 touchdowns over the course of 11 games last season. His top wideout, sophomore Justin Franklin, is also back in 2022 looking to build off a freshman season in which he established himself as the Bulldogs' top receiver. Throw in Narii Gaither, a senior running back who was the team's workhorse in the backfield, and there's plenty to be excited about on the offensive side of the football. Gaither racked up 1,034 yards and seven touchdowns on the ground to go with a team-high 43 receptions and another five trips across the goal line. Without a doubt, Gaither is their go-to weapon. - Charleston Gazette

The 5-foot-10, 177-pound speedster carried 178 times for 990 yards and seven touchdowns - also leading the circuit with 5.6 yards per carry. The junior led Gardner-Webb with 42 catches for 351 yards and five more touchdowns, proving himself as one of the top all-purpose backs in the country. He ranked No. 9 nationally during the regular season and led the Big South with 132.7 all-purpose yards per game and averaged 140.9 all-purpose yards per game against league competition. - Gardner-Webb Football

2021 ALL-BIG SOUTH CONFERENCE SECOND-TEAM (COCHES/MEDIA): OL - Gabe Thompson, Soph., Gardner-Webb,...Thompson proved to be a versatile tool up front for Gardner-Webb this season, starting at both guard and center. The 6-foot-3, 300-pound sophomore logged 729 snaps and graded out at 81 percent over 11 games played. Thompson ranked second on the team with 24 knockdown blocks and allowed just one sack this season. When the starting center went down for the year with an injury in early October, Thompson slid over seamlessly to center and helped clear a path for the Big South's top rusher - Gaither - and an offense that posted its best scoring average since 2005. His blocking helped the Runnin' Bulldogs score 44 touchdowns in 2021. - Gardner-Webb Football

Bailey Fisher threw three touchdown passes and Gardner-Webb scored 28 points in the fourth quarter to defeat North Carolina A&T 35-27 on Saturday. Trailing 20-7 early in the fourth quarter, the Bulldogs (4-7, 2-5 Big South) scored four consecutive touchdowns. First came some deception, as wide receiver Justin Franklin threw a 76-yard touchdown pass to Justin Jordan. Fisher followed with a short touchdown run and two TD passes to Narii Gaither for a 35-20 lead. North Carolina A&T (5-6, 3-4) was held to 168 yards but built its 20-7 lead on a pair of field goals, a 52-yard fumble return TD by Stephan Davis and an 11-yard run by Kingsley Ifedi, the Aggies' only offensive touchdown. Aaron Harris returned a kickoff 99 yards for a touchdown following Gardner-Webb's last score. - AP College Football

Bailey Fisher went 17-for-22 passing for 163 yards and two touchdowns and Gardner-Webb controlled from the outset in a 28-17 win over Robert Morris on Saturday. Narii Gaither's 3-yard touchdown run ended an eight-play, 71-yard opening drive and the Bulldogs (3-4, 1-2 Southern Conference) never trailed. Later, Ty French made it 14-0 when he came up with the strip and sack of Robert Morris quarterback George Martin in the end zone with 3:36 left in the first quarter. Following another Robert Morris (2-4, 1-2) turnover, Fisher connected with T.J. Luther on a 12-yard scoring pass for a three-score lead early in the second quarter. Martin threw for 202 yards and a score and was intercepted three times. The Colonials were held to five yards rushing on 34 attempts. - AP College Football

Bailey Fisher led two crisp, third-quarter touchdown drives and Gardner-Webb added an interception returned for another score, posting 21 unanswered points to gain the upper hand on Western Carolina 52-34 Saturday night. Fisher passed for 261 yards with two touchdowns. Gardner-Webb (2-2) gained 291 yards on the ground with Narii Gaither carrying 22 times for 151 and two TDs and T.J. Jones gaining 102 with a touchdown. The teams erupted for a combined 42 points in the third quarter with Western Carolina (0-4) staking out a 34-24 lead on a Rogan Wells six-yard TD pass to Raphae Williams.

The Runnin' Bulldogs answered with Fisher's five-yard scoring pass to Deland Thomas. The Catamounts pinned Gardner-Webb at the 10 after a punt, but Fisher led a four-play, 90-yard scoring drive, including consecutive completions of 25 and 53 yards to T.J. Luther and Justin Franklin, respectively. Donovan Jones capped the drive from the 6, and Gardner-Webb scored again 44 seconds later when Jamari Brown intercepted Wells and returned it 36 yards down the sideline for the Runnin' Bulldogs biggest lead, 45-34. Wells accounted for three touchdowns and 540 yards of offense for Western Carolina, passing for a season-high 427 yards and rushing for 113 more. Wells' 82-yard touchdown run is the longest play from scrimmage for WCU this season. - AP College Football

SEPT 6 BIG SOUTH OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Gardner-Webb quarterback Bailey Fisher (Clayton, Ga.) passed for 315 yards and three touchdowns in a five-point loss at FBS Georgia Southern on Saturday. In his GWU debut, he completed his first four passes of the game and finished 27-of-45 without a turnover. The performance was notable against a Georgia Southern secondary that led the nation last season in interceptions and ranked among the best in FBS in pass efficiency defense in 2020. Fisher tossed a 41-yard touchdown pass that gave Gardner-Webb a 6-3 lead heading into the second quarter and connected on a pair of fourth quarter touchdown passes that pulled Gardner-Webb within 23-18 and 30-25, respectively. He was 6-for-10 on third down, converting all six into first downs or touchdowns. Also nominated for Offensive Player of the Week: Caleb Snead (Campbell), Darran Butts (Hampton), Jonathan Murphy (Kennesaw State), Ron Hunt (North Carolina A&T) and Takairee Kennebrew (North Alabama). - Big South Football
