Clemson leads all schools with six players on the 27-member 2022 All-Atlantic Coast Conference Preseason Football Team announced on Wednesday. NC State followed with five selections, including quarterback Devin Leary, who was voted the ACC Preseason Player of the Year. Preseason honors were determined by a vote of 164 media members, including those who were credentialed for last week's ACC Football Kickoff in Charlotte, North Carolina. Clemson, which was picked by the media as the likely conference champion in the ACC Preseason Poll released earlier this week, placed a balanced contingent on the preseason All-ACC team with two players on offense and three on defense in addition to placekicker B.T. Potter. - ACC Football

Clemson Tigers celebrate their victory in the ACC Championship game. Clemson defeated Notre Dame 34-10 to win the championship at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, NC on Saturday, December 19, 2020. Clemson is the preseason favorite to win the 2022 ACC football championship, according to a poll of 164 media members released Tuesday by the conference. But the voting wasn't as unanimous as it's been in years past. Coach Dabo Swinney's Tigers, who went 10-3 last season, earned a league-high 103 first-place votes in being predicted to win their seventh ACC title in eight seasons. N.C. State finished second with 38 votes to win the ACC title. Miami was third with eight ACC title votes, and Wake Forest was fourth with four votes. Clemson was also tabbed the preseason Atlantic Division favorite, earning 111 first-place votes to win a final division title before the ACC moves to a divisionless structure starting in 2023. N.C. State received 44 first-place votes to win the Atlantic Division, while Wake Forest (last year's Atlantic Division champion) received six. - The State

Offensive line play is rarely the most glamorous storyline heading into a football season, and the words "functional depth" don't do much to spice up the conversation. But note the word Clemson coach Dabo Swinney used this summer when he admitted his squad didn't have enough depth along the offensive line in 2021. "It was a disaster," Swinney said. "I think we'll have more functional players, and I think that's a position that will perform well for us." Questions surround D.J. Uiagalelei and the Tigers' quarterback position entering the season, but the offensive line may hold the key to Clemson's offense finding more consistency in 2022.

The line cracked almost immediately in the opener versus an ultra-talented Georgia defense. Then it took weeks to find its footing amid a game of musical chairs on the interior. Matt Bockhorst didn't fit at center and then tore his ACL after a return to guard. Marcus Tate was more ready than his freshman counterparts to plug in at guard, but the converted tackle was prone to mental slips. The offense finally came along when Mason Trotter and Hunter Rayburn reinforced the guard and center spots, but their availability was always tenuous. Rayburn is now medically retired because of a neck issue, and Trotter will have to miss a chunk of the '22 season to an off-the-field, non-disciplinary issue. The questions that dogged Clemson throughout last season - the three spots between all-conference caliber tackles Jordan McFadden and Walker Parks - remain the same heading into another season. - Charleston Post Courier

The Clemson Tigers will officially begin their 2022 season with a Monday night game in Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Sept. 5 against Georgia Tech in the Chick-Fil-A Kickoff Game. "For the first time in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game's history we'll host two teams from the same conference facing off and starting ACC conference play in Atlanta," Gary Stokan, Peach Bowl CEO and president, said in a statement. "These are two great rivals and two passionate fan bases who will be in the national spotlight in prime time on Labor Day night." Clemson has played in the Chick-fil-A Kickoff Game twice (Alabama in 2008, Auburn in 2012).

The kickoff time for the season opener (8 p.m.) as well as the Tigers' next two games were all released Thursday afternoon. Clemson is slated to play Furman at 3:30 p.m. Sept. 10 and Louisiana Tech at 8 p.m. Sept. 17. The game against Georgia Tech will be televised on ESPN, while ACC Network with televise both the Furman and Louisiana Tech games. Clemson finished 10-3 last season, ending its season with a victory over Iowa State in the Cheez-It Bowl. - The State
