Clemson will be without a player in 2020 who played in all 15 games last season. Tigers coach Dabo Swinney announced following Thursday's practice that tight end Luke Price is out for the season with a torn ACL. Price was injured during a scrimmage last month. The redshirt junior caught four passes for 41 yards last season. He also contributed on special teams. Price transitioned from linebacker to tight end during the 2019 offseason. - The State

In addition, Clemson junior quarterback Trevor Lawrence was selected as the ACC Preseason Player of the Year, and the Tigers led all schools with five players voted to the 27-member 2020 Preseason All-ACC Team. Notre Dame, which will compete as an ACC football member this season, received the remaining two first-place votes.   09/04/20 - Braden GallowaySr/2022, Clemson, 6-4, 239 (DS#19 TE) + More +

Clemson tight end Braden Galloway insists that assistant coach Danny Pearman's use of the n-word during a 2017 practice is not indicative of the type of person Pearman is. Galloway, speaking after Tuesday's practice, said he was already aware of the incident involving Pearman and former tight end D.J. Greenlee before it was brought to light this summer. Greenlee told The State in June that Pearman used the word in a heated practice discussion moments after Greenlee first used the word. "He was repeating what I just said. He's like, 'n-word this, n-word that," Greenlee recalled. Pearman issued an apology this summer, saying, "What I overheard, I had no right to repeat." Galloway spoke with reporters Tuesday, becoming the first tight end to speak with the media since the incident made national headlines this summer. Galloway said he forgave Pearman for the incident and holds no ill will toward him.

"Obviously there are things going on in this world today that just aren't right, and some people, it's hard to really get through their minds, trying to explain to them and they're just not understanding. And coach Pearman's not one of those people," said Galloway, a junior. "He's very empathetic and very sympathetic about how we feel. He's talked to specifically me and Jaelyn (Lay) because we're the only African-American tight ends, and just made sure that everything was clear. "I've been here three years. I know what kind of guy he is. I know what kind of person he is...I'm happy he's my coach." - The State

A former NFL general manager believes if Lawrence ends up with the Jaguars, Clemson coach Dabo Swinney could join him. Former Jets GM Mike Tannenbaum said on ESPN's "Get Up!" TV show Monday morning that Swinney joining Lawrence in Jacksonville is "the perfect situation." "There's a lot of speculation in the league that Dabo Swinney, who has been on the short list of multiple head coaching searches, could be a coach that teams want to talk about. And this would really be the perfect storm," Tannenbaum said. Swinney was asked in 2018 if he would be interested in coaching in the NFL and replied "never say never."

"I've never really thought much about it. Nobody's really ever called me and said, 'Hey, do you want to come coach this NFL team?' I've never really put much thought into it," Swinney said at the time. "I've always just been so focused on what I'm doing. I guess you never say never." Swinney signed a 10-year, $93 million deal with Clemson in April of 2019. Swinney's deal includes a buyout if he leaves for a college coaching job, but there is no buyout if he leaves to take an NFL job. - The State

A new study released by the National Bureau of Economic Research found that less than 7% of the revenue generated by National Collegiate Athletic Association - more than $8 billion annually - finds its way to football and men's basketball players through scholarships and living stipends. "Intercollegiate amateur athletics in the U.S. largely bars student-athletes from sharing in any of the profits generated by their participation, which creates substantial economic rents for universities," the National Bureau of Economic Research study states. The top NCAA Division 1 schools earn approximately $8.5 billion in annual revenue, with 58% percent of that revenue coming directly from men's football and men's basketball programs. The two highest-paid football positions (starting quarterback and wide receiver) would earn $2.4 and $1.3 million, respectively, and starting basketball players would be paid between $800,000 and $1.2 million per year. - Forbes.com

  08/22/20 - Ben BatsonrJr/2023, Clemson, 6-0, 210 (DS#999 OLB) + More +

Last August, Clemson running back Darien Rencher mused on muscle-bound safety Ben Batson's future. "I think when it's all said and done, (when he) hangs up the pads," Rencher said, "he's going to be a little bodybuilder." Batson, whose father Joey is the Tigers' director of strength and conditioning, announced on Thursday his decision to walk away from football after suffering the sixth concussion of his career. It's unclear if Rencher's bodybuilding prophecy will come true, but Batson is expected to remain with the team as a student coach and might help his father as a student assistant in the weight room, a team spokesperson confirmed. "The game ends for us all eventually," Batson wrote on Instagram. "It's been an amazing journey with lots of great memories! It's tough to let it go but God never says oops. Excited for the next chapter." He is the second Clemson defender to leave the sport behind in the past month; linebacker Bryton Constantin on July 27 announced his retirement because of knee injuries. - The State

For the second time in a month, a Clemson defender is stepping away from football. Clemson safety Ben Batson is giving up football due to injuries, he announced on his Instagram Thursday night. A Clemson spokesperson said Batson is giving up the sport for concussion-related reasons. He is expected to remain with the program as a student coach and could assist his father - Clemson strength and conditioning coach Joey Batson - as a student assistant in the weight room. "The game ends for us all eventually. It's been an amazing journey with lots of great memories!" Ben Batson posted on Instagram. "It's tough to let it go but God never says oops. Excited for the next chapter." Batson announced his decision a few weeks after linebacker Bryton Constantin announced he was giving up football due to knee injuries. - The State

  08/20/20 - Travis EtienneSr/2021, Clemson, 5-10, 215 (DS#2 RB) + More +

Etienne was named the ACC Player of the Year each of the past two years. And with uncertainty surrounding this season due to the COVID-19 pandemic, going home to Louisiana and training while not being on a college campus might have been the best decision for his future. But it was actually when Etienne was back home this summer that he made the decision to play college football this fall. He decided that sitting out while his teammates and friends played was not something he could do. "Just going back home and seeing my nieces and my little brother, them playing sports and just seeing how pure the game was, the reason why we get into sports. Just remembering why I started playing football and why I fell in love with the game and just getting back to that," Etienne said of what factored into his decision.

"Just seeing my brothers out here grinding, it just forced me to want to get better and grind with them and just be the best player I can be." Etienne's love for the purity of college football is also partly why he surprised many by announcing in January that he would return for his senior season. "I wouldn't have any regrets because it was my decision to come back. I definitely came back and got better on the field, off the field, mentally, physically, spiritually. I've learned so much more coming back, and I was able to show my little brother and my family there's just so much more things to life than money," Etienne said. "If the season doesn't happen I'm still grateful that I came back. No looking back on the decision. I can't change it. So I just made the most out of it, whether we have a season or not." - The State

  08/18/20 - C.J. SpillerSr/2010, Clemson, 5-11, 196 (DS#1 RB) + More +

The two Clemson running backs who are widely regarded as the best in school history will now be in the same running backs room. C.J. Spiller is joining the Tigers coaching staff as an unpaid grad intern, Clemson coach Dabo Swinney announced Tuesday evening. Spiller will assist offensive coordinator Tony Elliott in working with two-time ACC Player of the Year Travis Etienne and Clemson's other backs. His first day on staff was Wednesday. "We just added another pretty good unpaid grad intern named C.J. Spiller. I'm very excited about having him join us," Swinney said. "He told me on Sunday he was wanting to start his coaching career. He's gonna get his Masters in athletic leadership. He actually joined us today, so I'm really excited about having that guy."

Spiller was named an All-American in football and track during his time with the Tigers. His No. 28 number is retired. The Florida native rushed for 3,547 yards during his four seasons, while averaging nearly 6 yards per carry for his career. He gained an ACC-record 7,588 all-purpose yards and finished his career with 51 total touchdowns. - The State

  08/17/20 - Darien RencherrSr/2022, Clemson, 5-08, 192 (DS#88 RB) + More +

In the middle of 48 of the most tumultuous hours in college football history, during which a group of players from across the country channeled a collective voice to push back against the possible cancellation of the fall season, Dabo Swinney offered a helping hand. He would, in fact, be supportive of the proposed college football players association. But Clemson's head coach inserted an important caveat. "That's different from a union," he said, nodding. "I will say that."

The wording is significant. A football players association would provide players a stronger voice and be helpful in advocacy and education. But without the collective bargaining power and the willingness to strike made possible by a union, an association would be limited in what it could accomplish. Clemson running back Darien Rencher, who along with quarterback Trevor Lawrence helped nationalize the #WeWantToPlay movement, suggested a football players association could have helped prevent the mess the sport is in with wide widespread health and safety concerns related to the coronavirus. - Charleston Post Courier
