  09/26/21 - Emory JonesrSr/2024, Cincinnati, 6-2, 203 (DS#29 QB) + More +

Emory Jones had two touchdown passes to go with a career-high 144 yards rushing, leading No. 11 Florida to a 38-14 victory over Tennessee on Saturday night and extending nearly two decades of dominance in the series. The Gators (3-1, 1-1 Southeastern Conference) won their fifth straight and 16th in 17 years in a series that used to go a long way toward deciding the Eastern Division. First-year Tennessee coach Josh Heupel is trying to get it back there. The second half showed he's still got a way to go. The Gators, who bounced back from a gut-wrenching loss against top-ranked Alabama in the Swamp a week ago, scored on consecutive drives in the third quarter to turn a three-point game into comfortable lead. Jones was at his best during those possessions.

With dynamic backup Anthony Richardson still nursing a strained right hamstring, Jones completed three straight passes that set up a trick-play touchdown. Jones lateraled to Trent Whittemore, who found Kemore Gamble in the end zone for a 13-yard score. It was Florida's first trick-play TD in three years. Jones ran for 43 yards on Florida's next drive and capped it with a 9-yard TD pass to Rick Wells. Jones completed 21 of 27 passes for 209 yards on the night and ran 15 times, with a long of 49 yards. He became Florida's first QB to top 200 yards passing and 100 yards rushing since Tim Tebow in 2009 against Florida State. Tebow accomplished the feat four times in four seasons. It was the first time Jones didn't have a turnover this season. - Florida/AP College Football

SEPT 20 BIG 12 DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Jared Bartlett, West Virginia, LB, So.,...Bartlett had a season-high five tackles, including a game-high and career-high three sacks in the Mountaineers' 27-21 win over No. 15 Virginia Tech. He also forced and recovered a fumble, and had a quarterback hurry. The three sacks were the most by a WVU player since Darius Stills at Baylor on October 31, 2019. Bartlett's five tackles tied his career-high set against Kansas State in 2020. His tackles for loss (3) and sacks (3) set career-highs. The six sacks by WVU in the game also marked a season-high and were the most since registering six against Baylor in 2020. - Big 12 football

Desmond Ridder threw the go-ahead touchdown pass early in the fourth quarter, then scored on a 7-yard TD run to help No. 8 Cincinnati seal a come-from-behind 38-24 victory Saturday at Indiana. Jerome Ford ran for two scores and Tre Tucker scored on a 99-yard kickoff return as the Bearcats (3-0) won their first road game of the season. They've won 12 of 13 since the start of 2020. Indiana (1-2) lost despite taking a 14-0 lead - and playing in front of its largest crowd for a non-conference game since September 1987.

The turning point came when starting linebacker Micah McFadden was ejected for targeting late in the first half. The Bearcats, who struggled to move the ball, scored 10 points in the final 93 seconds of the first half and finally took the lead on Ford's 3-yard TD run in the third quarter. The Hoosiers regained the lead on D.J. Matthews Jr.'s 14-yard scoring run then gave it right back on the kickoff return. A missed extra point opened the door for Indiana, and the Hoosiers grabbed a 24-23 advantage on Charles Campbell's 49-yard field goal late in the third. Then Ridder got hot. He made it 30-24 with the scoring throw to Pierce before the scoring run and a succesful 2-point conversion pass. - Cincinnati/AP College Football

  09/11/21 - Jerome FordrJr/2022, Cincinnati, 5-11, 211 (DS#17 RB) + More +

Jerome Ford rushed for 113 yards and three touchdowns, Desmond Ridder passed for 243 yards and two TDs, and No. 7 Cincinnati beat Murray State 42-7 on Saturday. The Bearcats were heavy favorites coming in, but the Racers outgained them 190-83 in the first half and led 7-0 in the second quarter. "The only way to grow up is to have some adversity," said Bearcats head coach Luke Fickell. "We kind of saw what we're made of. We found out a lot about each other in the second half." The score was tied at halftime before the Bearcats (2-0) scored touchdowns on four of their first five possessions in the second half.

Fickell was concerned about his team's focus this week with an invitation to join the Big 12 and trips to Indiana and No. 8 Notre Dame looming. "I don't want to put my head in the sand," Fickell said. "It is hard to deal with 18- and 22-year-olds and their ability to stay locked-in and focus when we're going to get everyone's best shot." Murray State's game plan to control the clock and keep the Bearcats' high-powered offense on the sidelines worked well in the first half. Murray State (1-1) held the ball for all but 1:30 of a scoreless first quarter, outgaining the Bearcats 128-7. "They came out and monotonously were moving the ball," Fickell said. "It frustrated us as much as anything. I give them an incredible amount of credit for their scheme." - Cincinnati/AP College Football

  09/11/21 - Emory JonesrSr/2024, Cincinnati, 6-2, 203 (DS#29 QB) + More +

Starter Emory Jones or backup Anthony Richardson. Florida coach Dan Mullen insists the 13th-ranked Gators (2-0) don't have a quarterback controversy or a reason to change the depth chart after Richardson outplayed Jones for the second straight game in a 42-20 rout of South Florida on Saturday. "We have two quarterbacks that are pretty talented guys that can make things happen on the field," Mullen said. "But there are a lot of things quarterbacks have to do." Jones and Richardson shared playing time, with each having his way in the opening half against a USF defense that allowed touchdowns on five consecutive possessions after producing a three-and-out to start the game. Jones threw a 35-yard TD pass to Xzavier Henderson and scored on a 33-yard run on the way to a 35-3 halftime lead before a crowd of 66,646 at Raymond James Stadium.

The redshirt junior from LaGrange, Georgia, was not nearly as effective the rest of the way, though, tossing a pair of interceptions and turning the ball over on downs on four straight possessions to begin the second half. "I thought (Jones) played much better this week than last week. I just thought we got sloppy in the second half," Mullen said. "I feel like I came out a little slow in the second half, which led to those two interceptions," Jones said. "Just bad decisions by me. I shouldn't have thrown those balls." Richardson, meanwhile, took an astounding passer rating of 917.2 into the fourth quarter after completing his first two attempts to Jacob Copeland on scoring plays of 75 and 41 yards before halftime. The 6-foot-4, 236-pound backup from Gainesville, Florida, completed his only pass of the second half for 36 yards to finish 3 of 3 for 152 yards, two TDs and a 745.6 rating that seemingly would be difficult for Mullen to ignore with top-ranked and defending champion Alabama visiting The Swamp next Saturday. - Florida/AP College Football

  09/09/21 - Emory JonesrSr/2024, Cincinnati, 6-2, 203 (DS#29 QB) + More +

Following a shaky first career start last Saturday, Gators quarterback Emory Jones took ownership of his performance in the postgame news conference and again during his media availability Monday. Jones accounted for nearly 200 yards of total offense and a touchdown pass in Florida's 35-14 win over FAU, but threw two interceptions and had a turnover on downs on fourth-and-goal. "I missed too many throws that I never miss," Jones said after the game. "It's me getting more comfortable, just being out there actually being excited. Got to lock in and get better every week." Jones vowed to get back in the lab and have better attention to detail, and he's done that this week according to Florida coach Dan Mullen.

During his appearance Wednesday on the SEC teleconference, Mullen offered his take on why Jones struggled in the season opener. "Overall, he played pretty well last Saturday, but made some errors that he's not used to making," Mullen said. "I don't know if trying to do too much is the word. Almost trying to be too perfect, too exact, mind is going in a million different directions trying to do too many things on the field instead of trusting your fundamentals, your techniques and doing what you're supposed to do. "I think this week in practice I've seen that. You've seen him this week, 'Make sure my feet are exact. Am I on balance? ... My mind's not trying to process a million things. My mind's focused on what's important and what I need to do.' I've seen that and that's a good step forward." - Gainesville Sun

Florida coach Dan Mullen insists he has no quarterback controversy: Emory Jones is the starter, and Anthony Richardson remains the backup following a 35-14 victory against Florida Atlantic on Saturday night in which one clearly outplayed the other. Jones was far from sharp in the Swamp, finishing with a touchdown and two interceptions in his first career start, but the fourth-year junior had some moments to build on moving forward. He did much of his damage with his legs, finishing with 74 of the team's 400 yards rushing.

Wearing the No. 15 that Tim Tebow made popular in Gainesville, Richardson looked more ready for the spotlight. He ran seven times for 160 yards, including a 73-yard score late in the game and an 11-yarder in which he broke three tackles and hurdled another defender. He missed his final five passes and finished 3-for-8 for 40 yards. "He's exciting with the ball in his hands, isn't he?" Mullen said of Richardson. "He's going to be a great player for us. I think you saw that tonight. His athleticism. He's a special guy with the ball in his hands." But Mullen made it clear that Jones has a better grasp of the entire offense right now and will keep his job. The outside noise, though, surely will be loud for the next week or two. "He went out there and did his thing," Jones said of Richardson. "I'm happy for him." - Florida/AP College Football

Desmond Ridder was 20 of 25 for 295 yards and four touchdowns and No. 8 Cincinnati beat Miami of Ohio 49-14 on Saturday in the opener for both teams. The Bearcats tied the series that began in 1888 at 59-59-7. Ridder threw an 81-yard touchdown pass to Tyler Scott on the second play from scrimmage. It was the longest TD toss of his career. "I saw them go into a two high like they did on film," Ridder said. "There was a smile on my face when they did. I just threw the ball up for Todd to go get. I was able to see things a lot better. I think a lot of guys saw things a lot better." Ridder also ran six times for 31 yards, including a 25-yard touchdown carry. The fifth-year senior had one interception. "Desmond was really poised," Cincinnati coach Luke Fickell said. "He was ready. It isn't only he has improved as a player but he's improved as a leader." Jerome Ford added 121 yards rushing yards on 12 carries, scoring on a 21-yard run in the second quarter. - Cincinnati/AP College Football

  08/31/21 - Josh MinkinsrSr/2025, Cincinnati, 6-1, 207 (DS#28 FS) + More +

Louisville opens the season against Ole Miss on Sept. 6 and coach Scott Satterfield said the Cardinals will be at full strength. That includes safety Josh Minkins, who missed the entire spring session and much of the summer with an offseason injury. During ACC Media Days, Satterfield said Minkins was working his way back onto the field but wasn't sure when he would be in shape to play. "Will he be in good enough shape to play the first game? I don't know. That's a question mark," Satterfield said. "Will it be three games or conference play? I just don't know where he'll be physically. We want to be able to count on him as we head forward because he played a little bit last year."

That time is now. Minkins, a Louisville native and Ballard graduate, played in six games last year and had six tackles. The coaching staff entered this year with high hopes for the athletic safety. His progress, after injury, was faster than the staff expected. "He had some issues with his shoulder but he's progressed a lot faster than we thought he would," Satterfield said. "We actually thought he would be ready for the start of the season, we didn't know if it would be the first game, second game or the third game. We are glad he's available now." - Courier Journal

  08/31/21 - Emory JonesrSr/2024, Cincinnati, 6-2, 203 (DS#29 QB) + More +

Jones has thrown for 613 yards with seven touchdowns and one interception on 55-of-86 passing (64 percent) in his UF career, while rushing for 514 yards and six touchdowns on 92 carries. He's been efficient and productive in a limited capacity, accounting for over 1,110 yards of total offense. Mullen is confident Jones can handle more of the playbook and will give him the freedom to make his own calls. "We put it all in on him," Mullen said. "It's not like he's a freshman or hasn't been around. That's part of the experience. He's played meaningful snaps in each of the last couple seasons. He's a guy that I feel pretty comfortable (with). We'll just throw the whole thing out of him and let him go." "I think he knows he has the ability (to audible) if he sees something that he likes or that's different that we weren't planning for. A lot of times you get into a game, especially one that you don't have much film to go watch, you have to be very flexible during the course of the game. He's a guy I have the confidence in that if he sees something, he can check to it and go take what he sees."

Mullen mentioned during preseason camp that Jones, due to his dual-threat ability, executes calls differently than Trask. Sometimes Jones will take chances that Trask didn't and miss, but when he hits, the result is often an explosive play. "He has so many different ways that he can make explosive plays that, you know, you're going to live with certain things," Mullen said of Jones. - Gainesville Sun

  08/27/21 - Tre TuckerSr/2023, Cincinnati, 5-09, 182 (DS#30 WR) + More +

Having a kick returner who can flip the field in a matter of seconds is an invaluable weapon for a football team. It's also a massive headache for a defensive coordinator. "Football is such a game of field position," University of Cincinnati defensive coordinator Mike Tressel said. "It's scary when you're covering kicks or as a defense when you know there's a guy back there that can take it to the house...That's a huge weapon in field position." The good news for Tressel, who is entering his first season as the Bearcats' defensive coordinator: One of the top return specialists in the American Athletic Conference is on his team.

Cincinnati junior wide receiver Tre Tucker was named second-team All-AAC as a kick returner last season after averaging a league-best 29.9 yards per return. Tucker accumulated 389 yards on 13 returns, with one of those returns going for a 97-yard score in a 28-7 win over South Florida at Nippert Stadium. The touchdown return was the first of Tucker's career and the first kickoff return score for the Bearcats since Ralph David Abernathy IV raced 90 yards into the end zone against Vanderbilt in the 2011 Liberty Bowl. "You need to have good vision because a lot of stuff happens so quick," said Tucker on what makes a special kick returner. "You gotta be able to see something and be able to hit it in that quick span or it will close up. Obviously, you need to have great speed too because like I said, things close up. You gotta be able to hit it and go." Tucker's vision is unmatched, and the 5-foot-9-inch, 175-pound Akron native, who runs the 40-yard dash in 4.3 seconds, is the fastest player on the Cincinnati roster. - Cincinnati Enquirer

The University of Cincinnati football team will open the 2021 season with the highest preseason Associated Press ranking in program history. The Bearcats were ranked No. 8 when the first AP poll was released Monday. The No. 8 ranking comes a week after the team was selected No. 10 in the USA TODAY Sports AFCA Coaches Poll. Cincinnati, which has won 31 games over the past three seasons, including a 9-1 mark last season, is the first team from outside of the Power Five conferences to be ranked in the preseason AP top 10 since Louisville started ninth in 2012. The Cardinals, who were also a member of the American Athletic Conference, joined the Atlantic Coast Conference the following year. - Cincinnati Enquirer

  08/22/21 - Desmond RidderrSr/2022, Cincinnati, 6-3, 213 (DS#3 QB) + More +

Desmond Ridder looks more confident and has more control of the offense UC's fifth-year senior is noticeably different. He's calm. He's relaxed. The 2020 American Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Year is as comfortable as he's been since arriving at Cincinnati in 2017. "Yeah, he's a different guy, for sure," wide receivers coach Mike Brown said of Ridder. "He's really, really confident right now, as he should be. They (Ridder and the receivers) put in a lot of work this summer and it's showing. Those guys are really on the same page."

The Bearcats had seven new receivers last season. With a year with that group under his belt, Ridder has looked both mentally and physically sharp, keeping his turnovers down and his completion percentage high. "I've seen a lot more confidence in him," senior wide receiver Alec Pierce said. "He's really taken control. I think he's understanding the game and just making the smart play. Say if you've got pressure, you'll get the ball out quick just to check down. That's not the glamorous throw but it's the smart and right thing to do. I've seen that a lot from him this year." - Cincinnati Enquirer
