  10/30/21 - Desmond RidderrSr/2022, Cincinnati, 6-3, 213 (DS#3 QB) + More +

Desmond Ridder twice connected with tight end Josh Whyle for touchdowns, and No. 2 Cincinnati remained unbeaten with a 31-12 victory Saturday over a struggling but feisty Tulane squad that kept the game competitive deep into the second half. Jerome Ford rushed for 65 yards and a touchdown - his 14th this season - for Cincinnati (8-0, 4-0 American Athletic Conference), which briefly trailed in the second quarter and led by just two points at halftime. Ridder passed for 227 yards and three touchdowns to go with his 47 yards rushing, but also was sacked in the end zone for a safety and intercepted. Whyle caught four passes for 79 yards.

Tulane (1-6, 0-4), which was playing without starting quarterback Michael Pratt because of his concussion during last weeks loss at SMU, lost its sixth straight, but did have a few standout performances. Running back Tyjae Spears, coming back from a knee injury that wiped out his 2020 season, rushed for 106 yards on 19 carries, highlighted by his 47-yard touchdown in the first half. Third-string QB Kai Horton, a freshman, started for Tulane because backup Justin Ibieta also was hurt. He completed seven of 16 passes for 79 yards. He was intercepted twice and sacked four times. - Cincinnati/AP College Football

  10/23/21 - Arquon BushrSr/2023, Cincinnati, 6-0, 187 (DS#30 CB) + More +

Cincinnati coach Luke Fickell could tolerate his team's slow start, and he may have expected some issues defending Navy's triple-option offense. What was more grating was the fact No. 2 Cincinnati took a double-digit lead in the second half and then had to hold on late for the win. "We've got to find ways, especially on the road, when you're up, whatever it is, 13 points or something, to kind of close things out," Fickell said. "That's probably the only thing that I'm somewhat disappointed we couldn't and didn't do today, but we needed a challenge and we got one." The unbeaten Bearcats actually led by 17 at one point, but victory wasn't secure until Arquon Bush intercepted a pass with 25 seconds left to wrap up a 27-20 victory Saturday.

The Bearcats (7-0, 3-0 American Athletic Conference) weren't at their best, but they never looked like they were in danger until the final minute, when Tai Lavatai's 1-yard run made it a one-score game and Navy recovered an onside kick with 48 seconds left. The Midshipmen (1-6, 1-4) didn't do much with that final chance, though. Lavatai's third-down pass was picked off by Bush near the Cincinnati 45. The Bearcats were fortunate to lead by three after a mistake-filled first half, but they eventually snapped out of their offensive funk. Desmond Ridder threw for 176 yards and two touchdowns. - Cincinnati/AP College Football

  10/16/21 - Jerome FordrJr/2022, Cincinnati, 5-11, 211 (DS#17 RB) + More +

Jerome Ford rushed for a career-high 189 yards and four touchdowns, helping No. 3 Cincinnati roll past UCF 56-21 on Saturday. Desmond Ridder passed for 140 yards and a touchdown as the Bearcats (6-0, 2-0 AAC) extended the nation's second-longest home winning streak to 24 games. It was first time in school history that Cincinnati scored 50 or more points in consecutive games. "The offensive line was the highlight of the day," Ford said. "It's the physical runs that took the heart from the defense. Tempo was the big thing this week. We wanted to take the pressure off Des." The all-time series was tied 3-3 coming in, with the Bearcats winning the previous two meetings by a combined six points. Saturday's game wasn't that close. It was just four seasons ago that UCF beat the Bearcats at Nippert Stadium by a similar score, 51-23. "This is a far cry from where we were five years ago," said Bearcats head coach Luke Fickell. "The guys that are still here turned the culture around." Cincinnati's special teams made the first big play when Josh Whyle partially blocked a punt to give the Bearcats the ball at the UCF 38. That led to a 1-yard TD run by Ford to put them ahead 7-0.

Ridder, who completed just six of his first 12 passes, hooked up with Alec Pierce in the back corner of the end zone for a 19-yard TD that put the Bearcats ahead 21-0 in the second quarter. "If you put a ball within a six or seven-foot radius, that kid is going to go up and get it," Ridder said of Pierce. The Bearcats didn't need to rely on Ridder and the passing game on Saturday, not with Ford gaining big chunks of yardage. Ford, who ran for a then-career high 149 yards in last week's win over Temple, sprinted 79 yards untouched for his third TD run to make it 28-0. "He makes my job a whole lot easier," Ridder said. - Cincinnati/AP College Football

  10/09/21 - Emory JonesrSr/2024, Cincinnati, 6-2, 203 (DS#29 QB) + More +

Emory Jones had a career-high four touchdowns passes, potentially quieting calls for backup Anthony Richardson, and No. 20 Florida routed woeful Vanderbilt 42-0 Saturday. It was a feel-good victory for the Gators on homecoming after a gut-wrenching loss at Kentucky essentially knocked coach Dan Mullen's team out of contention in the Southeastern Conference's Eastern Division. Florida (4-2, 2-2 SEC) won its eighth straight in the series and its 30th in the last 31 meetings. The Commodores (2-4, 0-2) dropped their 15th consecutive league game.

Jones was the star of this one. He completed 14 of 22 passes for 273 yards, with TD passes to Ja'Quavion Fraziars, Trent Whittemore, Dameon Pierce and Jacob Copeland. Pierce also scored twice more on short runs. Richardson played sparingly for the second straight week. His first pass was intercepted. He returned the following series but ended up giving way to Jones until getting back on the field for mop-up duty in the fourth quarter. Vanderbilt had several chances to make it more competitive, but Alabama transfer Joseph Bulovas missed three field goals. He was errant from 39, 41 and 33 yards out. The Commodores also had a touchdown overturned when Chris Pierce failed to maintain possession on a fourth-down catch when he hit the ground in the second quarter. - Florida/AP College Football

  10/08/21 - Desmond RidderrSr/2022, Cincinnati, 6-3, 213 (DS#3 QB) + More +

Desmond Ridder threw for 259 yards and three touchdowns and No. 5 Cincinnati routed Temple 52-3 on Friday night for its 23rd straight home victory. Jerome Ford ran for a career-high 149 yards and two scores to help the Bearcats (5-0, 1-0 American) avoid a letdown after their big victory at Notre Dame last week. "First time really playing a complete game," Bearcats coach Luke Fickell said. "Not saying perfect by any means, but a complete game. We talked about keeping that pressure on." The home streak is the second-longest in the country, behind Clemson at 31. Temple is the last team to beat the Bearcats at Nippert Stadium, edging them 35-24 in 2017.

Temple (3-3, 1-1) has played Cincinnati tough in recent years with the previous three meetings decided by a combined 20 points, including a 15-13 victory by the Bearcats in the last meeting in 2019. The Bearcats figured to get off to a fast start against Temple, which was outscored 50-7 in the first quarter through the first five games. They took advantage of a Temple mistake when Jadan Blue's muffed punt was recovered by Ja'von Hicks at the 13. Two plays later, Alec Pierce caught a 9-yard touchdown pass for a 10-0 lead. Pierce had six catches for 93 yards. "I know he's a guy who I can trust to go up and get the ball," Ridder said. "We've had a great connection and it's starting to show up in games." - Cincinnati/AP College Football

The last pass of the day by Desmond Ridder was a celebratory heave way up into stands toward the Cincinnati fans who came to Notre Dame to see their Bearcats make a statement. Cincinnati wanted to use the first top-10, regular-season matchup in program history as a chance to show it belongs among the nation's best before heading into its American Athletic Conference schedule. Mission accomplished.

Ridder threw two touchdown passes and ran for score late in the fourth quarter as No. 7 Cincinnati capitalized on its big opportunity and beat No. 9 Notre Dame 24-13 in a game the Bearcats hope can be the centerpiece of a College Football Playoff resume. No team from outside the Power Five conferences has reached the playoff in its seven seasons. Never even came close. To break that barrier, the Bearcats almost certainly need to go undefeated and this trip to Notre Dame looked like the toughest test on their schedule. Not to mention the grandest stage they'll appear on this season. - AP College Football

Desmond Ridder threw two touchdown passes and ran for score late in the fourth quarter as No. 7 Cincinnati capitalized on its big opportunity and beat No. 9 Notre Dame 24-13 Saturday in a game the Bearcats hope can be the centerpiece of College Football Playoff resume. Cincinnati (4-0) wanted to use its first Top 10, regular-season matchup as a statement game, heading into its American Athletic Conference schedule. No team from outside the Power Five conferences has ever reached the playoff. Never even came close. To break that barrier Bearcats almost certainly needs to go undefeated and this trip to Notre Dame (4-1) stood as the toughest test on the schedule. Not to mention the biggest stage they'll appear on this season.

The Bearcats were not quite dominant, but they were plenty good enough in their first trip to South Bend since 1900 to snap Notre Dame's 26-game home winning streak. When told how loud the crowd can be at Notre Stadium this week, Ridder quipped that it wouldn't be for long. The senior delivered, going 19 for 32 for 297 yards. He hooked up with Alec Pierce six times for 144 yards, and was at his best after Notre Dame cut the lead to 17-13 with 8:20 left in the fourth quarter. Ridder went 3 for 3, with a bullet down the middle for 36 yards to Leonard Taylor, on the ensuing drive. He capped it off with a 6-yard TD run around left end that made it 24-13. Cincinnati took advantage of three turnovers by Notre Dame in the first half to jump out to 17-0 lead. The miscues by the Irish were killers. - Cincinnati/AP College Football
