2022 PRESEASON CHUCK BEDNARIK AWARD WATCH LIST: Deshawn Pace, Cincinnati, Junior LB,...University of Cincinnati junior linebacker Deshawn Pace earned a spot on the Bednarik Award Watch List, given annually to the nation's top defensive player. The Colerain High School product also earned a spot on the Nagurski and Butkus Award honor rolls this summer. Pace did nearly everything for the Bearcats' No. 10 defense last fall, finishing sixth in the AAC with 94 tackles (nine for loss) and a team-high four interceptions. Two of those picks went for 39- and 27-yard returns against Indiana and Notre Dame, respectively, in consecutive games into the red zone. He had others against UCF and South Florida, while blocking a field goal at Navy that set up a 52-yard return and Alex Bales kick as time expired in the half.   UCF football was picked to finish third in the 2022 American Athletic Conference football preseason media poll released Thursday. The Knights, who received seven first-place votes and a total of 225 point, trail behind only Houston and defending league champion Cincinnati. The Cougars received seven of a possible 24 first-place votes to finish with 243 points in the poll, while the Bearcats were second at 242 points, despite the Bearcats' receiving 10 first-place votes. SMU was fourth with 187 points as first-year head coach Rhett Lashlee will have quarterback Tanner Mordecai back. Memphis was chosen fifth, ECU sixth, Tulane seventh, Tulsa eighth, South Florida ninth, Navy tenth and Temple last. The preseason media poll correctly picked Cincinnati as the AAC's champion last year. The Bearcats became the first Group of Five squad to make the College Football Playoff. This year, the Knights return a ton of talent at key positions including wide receiver Ryan O'Keefe, running back Isaiah Bowser, and defensive back Divaad Wilson. - Orlando Sentinel

2022 PRESEASON DOAK WALKER AWARD CANDIDATE: Johnny Richardson (Jr.), UCF,… Running back Johnny "Rocket" Richardson (5-7, 170) is a speed burner - clocking 4.40 seconds in 40 yards in 2020 -- who can be used as a weapon multiple ways. As a freshman in 2020, Richardson's rushing statistics include 11 attempts, 65 yards, 5.9 average and one touchdown. His sophomore year saw a much bigger role with 104 attempts, 733 yards (team leader), 7.1 average (team leader) and three touchdowns. Very few running backs created as many explosive runs as Richardson. As a receiver, Richardson also had 25 receptions, 226 yards and one touchdown in 2021 and look for that number to grow in 2022, especially if he is split out as a receiver more often. - Frank Cooney, Draft Scout

He's tightened up his 6-3, 242-pound body in the weight room. In leading Arkansas to a 9-4 season - their best since 2011 - KJ Jefferson completed 198 of 294 passes (67.3 %) for 2,676 yards and 21 touchdowns with only 4 interceptions. The dual-threat quarterback was also the team's leading rusher gaining 644 yards, although the Razorbacks had Trelon Smith, Raheim Sanders and Dominique Johnson rush for more than 500 yards each. There is an obvious difference in Jefferson from last year to Wednesday.

He's more confident and poised, but that was a work in progress all season. In the first half of the season opener against Rice, he was 2-of-5 passing for 14 yards and had an interception. In the second half, he was 10 of 16 for 114 yards and a touchdown, and it was like he never looked back. He was named MVP of the Outback Bowl. Now, the more mature Jefferson is ready for more growth, and that started this summer when he asked the janitor to leave the lights on so he and his teammates could work out on their own. - Northwest Arkansas Times

2022 PRESEASON DOAK WALKER AWARD CANDIDATE: Isaiah Bowser (Sr.), UCF,...A fifth-year senior who transferred from Northwestern to UCF before the 2021 season. With this name, should have been a natural at Georgia, right? Last year he appeared in eight games, making five starts at running back during first season with the Knights. He was named to AAC Weekly Honor Roll once and earned CBS Sports National Game Ball of the Week once. Led the Knights with 159 rushing attempts, nine rushing touchdowns and 87.9 rushing yards per game and finished season with 703 yards rushing and an average of 4.4 yards per carry, showing this Bowser has a bite even if he isn't a Dawg. - UCF Football

KJ Jefferson pays attention to preseason lists and projections. Arkansas coach Sam Pittman said this spring that Jefferson's No. 14 ranking - out of 14 quarterbacks - by a media outlet last year was a motivator for him throughout the 2021 season. This year he is not as concerned about what people say. But he does believe he is underrated in the conference. "I am," Jefferson said in an interview with SEC Network host Peter Burns on Wednesday at SEC Media Days in Atlanta. "I feel like I am, but, I mean, I don't try to too much dwell on it. I mean, the only thing I'm worried about is playing ball and just getting back with my team and working." Jefferson finished last season with 2,676 passing yards, 21 touchdowns and 4 interceptions, and 664 yards rushing and 6 touchdowns. - Northwest Arkansas Times

Jefferson, in a way, compares his style of play to that of former Auburn quarterback Cam Newton, who won the Heisman Trophy in 2010. "Just the swagger that he brings to the quarterback position," Jefferson said. "I mean, there's nothing like it. That's what I bring. "Coming from where I come from, I've always been doubted. Adding it as fuel to the fire and keeping it pushing just knowing that I can't just keep dwelling on it and looking at it over and over again. The more I look at it my mind is not in the right spot and I need to be out there working."

Razorbacks safety Jalen Catalon understands where the Newtown comparisons come from, but he believes Jefferson simply wants to be his own player. "He wants to say I did it a mile away, for sure," Catalon said. "But KJ is a team player. KJ always wants to make sure he's right himself so he can be right for us. He's always holding everybody accountable and (in) workouts when we do skills and drills and stuff like that. "He's a great quarterback, great leader. And like I said, I know that's my quarterback." - Northwest Arkansas Times
