Will Boler and Grayson Cash return as the only seniors in the backend and look to cap their respective careers in successful fashion. Both have played in the strong safety position and are expected to share the role in the same capacity but with fluidity on the field. Boler was named an All-C-USA honorable mention in each of the last three seasons, appearing in 49 career games with 33 starts, between free and strong safety positions, and has accumulated 160 tackles (4.5 for loss), 13 pass breakups, 2 interceptions and 2 forced fumbles.

Meanwhile, Cash has played in 45 career games while amassing 84 tackles (4 for loss), 11 pass breakups, 6 interceptions, 2 forced fumbles and 2 blocked punts. He is a timely playmaker for UAB after scoring a touchdown on one of his blocked punts and setting a school record with a 100-yard interception return for a touchdown, the latter of which swung momentum back to UAB before halftime in what was a close first-half against FAU. - Birmingham Post Herald

2022 PRESEASON RIMINGTON TROPHY WATCHLIST: Will Rykard, UAB,...Rykard took over the starting center position midway through last season as veteran Andrew Smith Jr. moved to left guard. The Blazers were 5-1 last season with Rykard in the starting lineup. For his career, Rykard has played in 15 games with nine starts and enters this season as the full-time starter. - UAB Football

The Blazers lost two of its more productive players from last season in Alex Wright and Antonio Moultrie, a bookend duo that found success throughout the 2021 season. Wright was drafted by the Cleveland Browns in the third round of the NFL Draft and Moultrie entered the transfer portal and eventually signed with the Miami Hurricanes. Kelle Sanders returns as the lone starter among outside linebackers and appeared in every game last season, registering 10 starts and amassing 30 tackles (3.5 for loss) and 2 sacks.

He'll take over for the departed Alex Wright at the JACK position after recording four starts at the prime position and six starts as a second JACK on the field. Kyle Harrell and Nikia Eason Jr. are the next most experienced pass rushers on the roster after contributing at a high level on special teams. Harrell has played 36 games for the Blazers, amassing 43 tackles (8 tackles for loss), 3.5 sacks, two forced fumbles and recovery and an interception, and Eason has 28 games under his belt, recording 32 tackles (8 for loss), 5 sacks and two blocked kicks. - Birmingham Post Herald

There are three certainties to the UAB football program. A Spanish Fort alum on every roster, a productive running game and a brutal and domineering defense. It's time we focus on the latter. The Blazers return 16 total starters, nine on defense, but have a lack of experience at the defensive line position with departures from three multi-game starters. It'll be imperative for the unit to come together quickly to allow UAB's linebackers to wreak havoc in its unique 3-4 scheme.

Fish McWilliams started only two games last season but is battle-tested throughout his time on the Southside. A trio of upperclassmen returns with some playing experience but the Blazers also need contributions from a crop of redshirt freshmen and offseason transfers. McWilliams is the lone starter returning on a defensive line that lost three key members to graduation. He was granted a COVID waiver, reclassified as a redshirt junior, and steps into a true leadership role as the longest-tenured member in the position. McWilliams has appeared in 39 games for the Blazers, amassing 38 tackles (10 tackles for loss), 7.5 sacks and two fumble recoveries. - Birmingham Post Herald

Despite the losses of Pittman and Prince, UAB does have two tight ends with playing experience during their time on the Southside. Beyond the presence of Terrell McDonald and Maleak Bryant, the Blazers employ a host of redshirt freshmen, an incoming prep signee and two former JUCO transfers. McDonald is the most experienced tight end remaining on the roster, appearing in every game last season with one start, and is the only returning tight end with a reception for the Blazers. Bryant, a heralded recruit out of Garden City Community College (Kan.), has an opportunity to make good on his upside with a 6-6, 240-pound frame. He played in three games during the 2020 season but missed last year due to an injury. The Blazers signed two tight ends in the 2022 recruiting class and both have tangible qualities similar to that of the departed Pittman and Prince. - Birmingham Post Herald

The Blazers return 16 starters, seven on offense and nine on defense, and the elevation of offensive coordinator Bryant Vincent to interim head coach should have an effect on a core of receivers that have the capability to evolve the UAB offense beyond a boom-or-bust mentality. Leading returning receiver Trea Shropshire entered and exited the transfer portal twice during the offseason, ultimately deciding to remain with UAB to finish off his college career, and multi-game starters Samario Rudolph and Tejhaun Palmer will see an increased role along with Ryan Davis and Fred Farrier II.

The good news is that Trea Shropshire emerged from his journey through the transfer portal, along with his nation-leading 26 yards per reception last season. The bad news is that the rest of the returning receiving corps combined for only 324 yards on 33 receptions, including a lone touchdown catch by Samario Rudolph. However, there is reason to be optimistic about the prospects of an enhanced passing game. Shropshire developed into a dangerous deep threat for the Blazers but only caught 27 passes during the season. His 703 yards led to a nation-leading 26.0 yards per catch, including 7 touchdowns, and has the opportunity to become the fourth UAB receiver (Derrick Ingram, Roddy White and Austin Watkins Jr.) to have more than 1,000 yards in a single season with an increase in usage. - Birmingham Post Herald

For the UAB football program, life without all-time leading rusher Spencer Brown has been successful. Debo and Skull are the proof in the pudding. The Blazers return 16 starters, seven on offense and nine on defense, and will have one of the best rushing attacks in the nation as they return their top two running backs from a year ago. DeWayne McBride and Jermaine Brown Jr., affectionately known as Debo and Skull, respectively, combined for 2,002 yards and 20 touchdowns on the ground last season and are expected to lead the UAB offense with interim head coach and offensive coordinator Bryant Vincent calling the shots.

McBride had a breakout true freshman season on the Southside, accumulating 439 yards and 4 touchdowns in the truncated 2020 season, including a 71-yard touchdown run against Western Kentucky and a school-record 75-yard touchdown run at Louisiana Tech. He expanded on that last season with 1,371 yards and 13 touchdowns, averaging 6.7 yards per carry, and was named to the C-USA second team. - Birmingham Post Herald

Bill Clark's preferred replacement is now official. Offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Bryant Vincent has been named interim head coach of the UAB football program for the upcoming season, announced today by UAB athletic director Mark Ingram. "We are thankful for the tremendous job Bill Clark has done leading our program through unprecedented times; we certainly wish him well and hope that he has a full recovery," Ingram said. "After meeting with Coach Bryant Vincent, our team and staff over the last few days, and in consultation with President Ray Watts and the UA System Board of Trustees, we have asked Coach Vincent to serve as our Interim Head Coach. He is well-respected by our players and staff and has the full support of our athletics administration and university leadership. UAB will perform a national coaching search at the conclusion of the season, but right now our focus is on the present and getting this tremendous team ready to make another run at a Conference USA Championship." Vincent was initially hired as offensive coordinator when Clark took the reigns of the program in 2014 and spent three years at South Alabama under former head coach Joey Jones following the dismissal of the UAB program. - Birmingham Post Herald

Former UAB standout Colby Ragland has signed with the Philadelphia Stars, the USFL team announced on Tuesday morning. Ragland started for the past three seasons in the Blazers' offensive line and earned All-Conference USA recognition for each of the past two seasons. Ragland played left guard and right tackle during his senior season at UAB. With four games remaining in the USFL's inaugural regular season, the Stars have a 3-3 record, good second place in the North Division. The top two teams from both the USFL's divisions will advance to the playoffs. Ragland becomes the third former UAB player in the Birmingham-based league, joining Gamblers kicker Nick Vogel and New Jersey Generals running back Kingston Davis. - Birmingham Post Herald
