DeWayne McBride and quarterback Dylan Hopkins combined to rush for 240 yards on 39 carries and three touchdowns and UAB downed upset-minded Charlotte 34-20 on Saturday. McBride's 13-yard scoring run with 12:24 to play put the Blazers (4-2, 2-1 Conference USA) back in front 27-20 after the 2-point conversion. After forcing the 49ers (1-6, 0-3) to punt on consecutive possessions, Hopkins sealed it with a 61-yard scoring jaunt with 1:01 left. McBride had 29 carries for 137 and two scores. Hopkins ran it 10 times for 103 yards and a score in addition to completing 15 of 23 passes for 231 yards, a touchdown and an interception. Elijah Spencer had four catches for 103 yards and a touchdown for Charlotte. DeWayne McBride ran for 120 yards with three first-half touchdowns, UAB rolled up 303 yards on the ground, and the Blazers routed Middle Tennessee 41-14 on Saturday. McBride scored on runs of 5, 1 and 27 yards and Trea Shropshire caught an 88-yard TD pass from Dylan Hopkins in a 38-point first-half onslaught for UAB (3-2, 1-1 Conference USA). Hopkins completed 17 of 27 passes for 278 yards with the long touchdown to Shropshire, who caught six passes for 193 yards. Jermaine Brown had a 24-yard touchdown run in the first quarter and finished with 114 yards rushing on 10 carries. Chase Cunningham was 26-of-43 passing for 196 yards for the Blue Raiders (3-3, 0-2). He threw a 15-yard touchdown pass to Jaylin Lane in the first quarter. Darius Bracy scored Middle Tennessee's other touchdown with a 1-yard run in the fourth quarter. DeWayne McBride set career highs with 223 yards rushing and four touchdowns to lead UAB past Georgia Southern 35-21 on Saturday. McBride's scoring runs of 1 and 31 yards in the first half helped build a 21-0 lead. He added a 27-yard score in the fourth to make it 28-14 and a 4-yarder with 4:46 left to cap the scoring. Dylan Hopkins passed for 125 yards and a touchdown for UAB (2-1). The UAB defense intercepted Kyle Vantrease three times - with one apiece from Jaylen Key, Tyler Taylor and Keondre Swoopes. Key returned his interception 45 yards. Vantrease finished 24-of-50 passing for 204 yards and a touchdown for Georgia Southern (2-1). Jermaine Brown Jr. ran for 114 yards and touchdown, the UAB defense accounted for a pair of touchdowns, and the Blazers routed Alabama A&M 59-0 on Thursday night in the debut of head coach Bryant Vincent. Vincent spent the last four seasons as offensive coordinator for the Blazers. Brown had a 19-yard touchdown run to cap UAB's opening series. Charlie Goode blocked Troy Lendvay's punt attempt and Damien Miller recovered the ball in the end zone to end Alabama A&M's first drive. Mac McWilliam's 78-yard interception return for a TD made it 28-0 with 19 seconds remaining in the first quarter. Dylan Hopkins was 13-of-18 passing for 191 yards and a touchdown for UAB. His 4-yard TD run stretched the lead to 45-0 midway through the third quarter. Lee Witherspoon added 53 yards rushing and a pair of touchdowns. The Blazers, who finished 16th nationally in total defense (328.8) and beat then-No. 13 BYU 31-28 in the Independence Bowl last season, held Alabama A&M to 124 yards of offense in the first half and 235 yards overall. The Mobile, Ala. native averaged 5.1 yards per carry in 2021 and added seven rushing touchdowns as well. Brown Jr. was recently named to the 2022 Doak Walker Award Watch List and makes up one of the top 1-2 punches at running back with teammate DeWayne McBride. Highlighted by a 100-yard pick six against Florida Atlantic and a blocked punt which he recovered for a touchdown at Southern Miss, Cash ended the season with 23 tackles, three interceptions, four pass breakups and two blocked punts. With six career interceptions, Cash's next INT will move him into the top 10 all-time at UAB in that category. He is one of four returning starters on UAB's offensive line in 2022 as this unit is expected to be one of the best in the nation. Will Boler and Grayson Cash return as the only seniors in the backend and look to cap their respective careers in successful fashion. Both have played in the strong safety position and are expected to share the role in the same capacity but with fluidity on the field. Boler was named an All-C-USA honorable mention in each of the last three seasons, appearing in 49 career games with 33 starts, between free and strong safety positions, and has accumulated 160 tackles (4.5 for loss), 13 pass breakups, 2 interceptions and 2 forced fumbles.

Meanwhile, Cash has played in 45 career games while amassing 84 tackles (4 for loss), 11 pass breakups, 6 interceptions, 2 forced fumbles and 2 blocked punts. He is a timely playmaker for UAB after scoring a touchdown on one of his blocked punts and setting a school record with a 100-yard interception return for a touchdown, the latter of which swung momentum back to UAB before halftime in what was a close first-half against FAU. - Birmingham Post Herald
