Brown, the sixth-year senior, has taken all of the first-team snaps and clearly has the best grasp of second-year offensive coordinator Joe Moorhead's playbook. Without the opportunity to compete last spring and with an abbreviated fall camp, Brown wasn't able to beat out Tyler Shough at quarterback last season. After they split snaps in the Pac-12 championship and Fiesta Bowl, Shough transferred to Texas Tech and Brown became the favorite to be Oregon's starter in 2021. "I love AB," running back CJ Verdell said when asked about Brown last week. "He's a real leader on and off the field, does a great job of rallying everybody, making sure he knows everybody, building a good bond and chemistry with all the players, especially on the offense. "Even last year when Tyler was the main guy, and (Brown) was backing him up, he was still doing the same things. The transition was very natural for him." Jay Butterfield appears to have the strongest arm and the best pocket presence among the three freshmen quarterbacks. He threw a touchdown pass to Terrance Ferguson in the 2-minute drill to finish Saturday's scrimmage strong. - Register Guard
