Ohio State quarterback C.J. Stroud will be at the Manning Passing Academy later this week. Stroud is one of 46 college passers who were selected to serve as counselors for the prestigious camp hosted by one of football's first families, according to its brochure. The counselors tutor more than a thousand high school and middle school quarterbacks who are registered to attend, and they include Alabama's Bryce Young, the reigning Heisman Trophy winner who edged Stroud for the player of the year award last season, as well as fellow Big Ten signal callers Connor Bazelak of Indiana, Penn State's Sean Clifford and Purdue's Aidan O'Connell.

In addition to working with the younger passers, the counselors go through a skills competition over the four days. The camp, which has been run by Archie Manning and his three sons, Cooper, Peyton and Eli, for more than two decades, is being held at Nicholls State in Thibodaux, Louisiana, starting Thursday. - Columbus Dispatch

Ohio State quarterback C.J. Stroud has some new wheels following his latest name, image and likeness deal. Stroud will be driving a pre-owned Bentley Bentayga as part of a partnership with Sarchione Auto Gallery, a dealership in Canton. In exchange for the luxury SUV, which is valued at $150,000, he will promote the auto dealership on social media and make public appearances at its gallery, including one scheduled for Wednesday afternoon. "When you talk to people, whether it's in the community or at the game, our brand awareness is what we're building," said Ryan Burton, the general manager of Sarchione Auto Gallery, "so when you have the best-of-the-best promoting your brand, it only does good things."

The northeast Ohio dealership has previously partnered with players from the Cleveland Browns, but its deal with Stroud marked the first one it had struck with the Buckeyes since endorsement deals with college players became permissible under NCAA rules last summer. Burton said he expected a couple of other Ohio State players to follow Stroud later this year. Athletes First, the agency that represents Stroud in negotiating NIL opportunities, first reached out to Sarchione Auto Gallery to express interest in a potential partnership. - Columbus Dispatch

While there was plenty of hope about his potential performance, people didn't know what to expect from Ohio State quarterback C.J. Stroud last season. And he became a Heisman Trophy finalist. By the final game of the year, and in the Rose Bowl, Stroud had the best single-game statistical effort of any quarterback in Ohio State history, so this year they're expecting greatness. Ohio State coach Ryan Day cuts his optimism with realism. "Just because he did it last year doesn't mean it's just gonna happen this year. If anything else, he's got a bull's-eye on his chest," Day said on 97.1 The Fan recently.

Still, Stroud is no longer being chided by fans but touted as perhaps the next big thing and possibly even the No. 1 pick in next year's NFL draft. But after a great spring, offensive coordinator Jim Knowles compares Stroud's performance to a two-time Super Bowl MVP. "When I was at Ole Miss with Eli Manning, he was the same way in that the guys that are good - which C.J. is - they can diagnose. There's always a soft spot. We're trying to diagnose, bluff rotations and try to deceive the quarterback and do all those and show on picture and end up at another." - Elevenwarriors.com

Ohio State is expanding its name, image and likeness offerings. The athletic department announced Thursday that it has launched a program aimed at providing opportunities for athletes to serve as brand ambassadors for companies around Columbus. Carey Hoyt, a senior associate athletic director who oversees NIL administration, said the corporate ambassador program was modeled after an initiative that arranges internships for athletes through partnerships with about 60 local businesses. Responsibilities for participating athletes would include promotional work on behalf of a company such as posting on social media or making public appearances.

Though Ohio State is facilitating the deals, Hoyt said it will not be involved in setting any finer details of the agreements. "The key to it is the companies are going to negotiate with student-athletes their value," Hoyt said. "We're not saying to a company like, "Hey, this student-athlete is worth $10,000 a tweet." Nothing like that. We're really just matching the companies with the student-athletes that could be a fit and letting them determine the details of the contract." Hoyt's hope is to bring in around 20 partner companies within the first year of the program. "I would consider that a success," she said. The athletic department has taken an increasingly active role this year in facilitating NIL arrangements. - Columbus Dispatch

Speaking to about 100 members of the Columbus business community on Thursday morning, Ohio State football coach Ryan Day put a Name, Image and Likeness price tag on what he believes it will take to keep the Ohio State football roster together. That rate? $13 million. To some schools engaged in NIL payments at the highest level right now, that number might sound small and quaint.

To many other schools in the Big Ten, it may sound gigantic and impossible. As usual, it's a number that puts Ohio State in the thick of the latest changes to college sports, as the Buckeyes always say they seek to straddle the line of keeping up without going too far. And while it might be tempting to look at $13 million for an 85-man scholarship football team as $150,000 per player, I think the better calculation is something closer to $500,000 each for the 26 guys you can't live without. - Cleveland Plain Dealer

Ohio State football will open the season with a primetime showdown in Ohio Stadium against Notre Dame on Saturday, Sept. 3. A kickoff time of 7:30 p.m. was announced on Tuesday. The game will be shown on ABC, and ESPN GameDay will set up in Columbus for the day. It will be GameDay's 21st visit to Columbus, the last coming on Nov. 20 last season when the Buckeyes hosted Michigan State in a top-10 matchup. Ohio State won that one to improve to 15-5 when GameDay camps outside Ohio Stadium.

Also, ABC claimed the fourth game of the season for the Buckeyes, their Big Ten opener at home on Sept. 24 against Wisconsin. That kickoff time has not yet been set. The Michigan kickoff time was announced Monday. That game on Nov. 26 in Columbus will start on noon on Fox. Notre Dame should be the most talented team that the Buckeyes face in the 2022 regular season, with first-year coach and former Ohio State linebacker Marcus Freeman leading the Fighting Irish into the Shoe. This game is the first of a home-and-home series that will send Ohio State to South Bend next season. - Cleveland Plain Dealer

Stroud might be Ryan Day's perfect quarterback, in turn making him Ohio State football's best NFL prospect. His 6-foot-3, 218-pound frame makes him the prototypical size teams dream of having. He can make all of the throws, has poise in the pocket and can buy time with his feet when he needs to. That was all on display during his first season as the starter when he threw for 4,435 yards and 44 touchdowns while completing 71.9% of his passes. If there's one knock against Stroud's game, it's that his ability - and sometimes desire - to make plays with his legs is often non-existent. But that's a description that comes with the territory of practically every quarterback who's won the sport's most important trophy: None of them are the supreme athletes whose highlights will dominate social media.

That's because they've got a trait that's even more valuable: supreme football IQ. "That's the thing I love about football is that you can actually put in the work and go see it and put it on the field," Stroud said. "I love meeting. I love talking about this stuff. I love the verbiage. I love challenging myself." Stroud is a football mind. One conversation with him is enough to see how he views the game, and why he's able to anticipate and complete throws in places some pros wouldn't try. Just like supreme athleticism can't be taught, neither can that level of understanding. That trait is why at the peak of Peyton Manning's career, he was often given multiple plays at the line of scrimmage and picked which one he wanted to run based on what he saw. That trait is why Tom Brady is a seven-time Super Bowl champion. - Cleveland Plain Dealer

C.J. Stroud threw for nearly 400 yards and six touchdowns in the first half as No. 5 Ohio State made it look easy in a 56-7 blowout of No. 7 Michigan State on Saturday. Stroud finished 32-for-35 against the Spartans' sketchy pass defense, which had allowed more yards through the air than any in major college football, and positioned himself as maybe the Heisman Trophy favorite heading into the championship stretch of the season. Heisman hopeful Kenneth Walker III, the nation's leading rusher for Michigan State (9-2, 6-2 , CFP No. 7), was turned into a nonfactor by the Buckeyes. Walker had six carries for 25 yards.

By the time Stroud took a seat late in the third quarter, the redshirt freshman piled up 432 yards for the Buckeyes (10-1, 8-0 Big Ten, CFP No. 4), who polished their College Football Playoff resume and served warning to No. 8 Michigan ahead of the rivalry game next week that may end up determining the winner of the Big Ten East. "You can see our capability," Ohio State coach Ryan Day said. "We're playing really good football, clean football. We have a high ceiling, and we're still striving towards greatness." The Buckeyes' top three receivers all eclipsed the 100-yard mark and caught touchdown passes. Chris Olave had seven catches for 140 yards and two touchdowns. Garrett Wilson grabbed seven for 126 and a pair of scores, and Jaxon Smith-Njigba had 10 receptions for 105 yards and a TD. Ohio State led 49-0 at the half and outgained the Spartans 655-224.   After two weeks of some uneven offensive play, the No. 6 Buckeyes were understandably anxious this week with giant-killer Purdue coming to town. Ohio State had reason to be wary of the Boilermakers, who had already upset two top-five teams this season. The last time the two teams met, Purdue halted the Buckeyes' 2018 march to the playoffs with a stunning upset in West Lafayette. No worries this time. Freshman quarterback C.J. Stroud was dialed in, throwing for 361 yards and five touchdowns as the Buckeyes struck early and rolled over Purdue 59-31 on Saturday. "It's going to build a lot of confidence," Ohio State coach Ryan Day said. "I don't think our guys were lacking confidence, I just think after the last two weeks - we were on edge a little bit this week, to be honest with you. We just wanted to get back in this game, score in the red zone and get our nose dirty a little bit, and I think we did that." The Buckeyes (9-1, 7-0 Big Ten, CFP No. 4) scored on all seven of their first-half possessions, piling up 45 points against a Purdue team that hadn't allowed more than 30 in any game this year. TreVeyon Henderson added to his impressive freshman resume with 98 yards and a pair of first-half TDs.

Garrett Wilson caught three touchdown passes and ran for another. "We were lucky to hold them to 59," Purdue coach Jeff Brohm said. The Buckeyes romped early, capitalizing on two Boilermakers turnovers, the second of which was a fumbled kickoff recovered on the Purdue 14. The 12-yard catch by Wilson two plays later gave the Buckeyes two touchdowns in 14 seconds. Wilson had 10 catches for 126 yards. Jaxson Smith-Njigba followed up a 15-catch, 240-yard effort last week with nine catches for 139 yards a a TD. Chris Olave had nine receptions for 85 yards a touchdown, the 33rd of his career and one away from the school record. "It's just real scary," Smith-Njigba said. "I think its hard for defenses to cover all of us." - Ohio State/AP College Football

No. 3 Oregon, No. 4 Ohio State and No. 5 Cincinnati all moved up one spot behind No. 1 Georgia and No. 2 Alabama in the second College Football Playoff rankings, which were released Tuesday night. Two Southeastern Conference teams sat atop the ranking for a second straight week, but after Michigan State lost last weekend, at least one spot in the top four was certain to change.

The CFP selection committee simply bumped up the Ducks, Buckeyes and Bearcats and dropped Michigan State to No. 7 behind No. 6 Michigan. "It's worth noting that teams ranked two through six all won, but the committee just didn't see a separation," committee chairman and Iowa athletic director Gary Barta said. The Spartans beat the Wolverines 37-33 just two weeks ago, but the head-to-head result didn't carry the debate with the committee. "The Michigan-Michigan State discussion started last week," Barta said. "The committee went back and forth. Michigan, statistically, is probably a more complete team." For the second straight week, Cincinnati set a new mark for best ranking for a team outside the Power Five conferences. The Bearcats were sixth in the first rankings. - AP College Football

C.J. Stroud threw for 405 yards and two touchdowns, Ohio State's defense came up with a pair of stops after Nebraska had pulled within six points, and the sixth-ranked Buckeyes got out of Memorial Stadium with a 26-17 win on Saturday. The Buckeyes' nation-leading offense managed only two field goals in the second half, allowing the Cornhuskers — a two-touchdown underdog, according to FanDuel Sportsbook — to make it a one-score game until Noah Ruggles kicked a 46-yard field goal with 1:29 left. Ohio State (8-1, 6-0 Big Ten) won its 24th straight game against a conference opponent but couldn't have impressed the committee that put it No. 5 in the initial College Football Playoff rankings.

The Huskers (3-7, 1-6) dropped their fourth straight game and are assured of a fourth consecutive losing season under Scott Frost and a fifth in a row overall. The Buckeyes played without top receiver Garrett Wilson for an undisclosed reason but got career highs of 15 catches for 240 yards from Jaxon Smith-Njigba. Stroud completed 36 of 54 passes but threw two interceptions after having gone four straight games without being picked off. His 3-yard touchdown pass to Chris Olave and Smith-Njigba's 75-yard catch-and-run for a TD helped put the Buckeyes up 20-10 at half. The Huskers scored late in the third quarter to pull within 23-17 and got the ball right back when Myles Farmer intercepted Stroud's deep ball intended for Olave. Nebraska drove to the 13, but Chase Contreraz missed a 30-yard field goal attempt. The Buckeyes were forced to punt and Nebraska began its next possession at its 10 with 6:11 left. Adrian Martinez started it with a 21-run but threw three straight incomplete passes to bring on the punter with 5:17 remaining. - Ohio State/AP College Football

C.J. Stroud and TreVeyon Henderson provided Ohio State's offense with a refreshingly familiar look Saturday. Even a persistently rainy night couldn't derail the Buckeyes' two big stars. Stroud threw four touchdown passes, Henderson scored three times and No. 5 Ohio State routed Indiana 54-7 after its bye week, extending the Football Bowl Subdivision's longest active winning streak against one team to 27 in a row. "It was great to see those guys running around. It looked like they were having fun out there," coach Ryan Day said. "That's good and that's part of the energy we want." Right now, it seems nothing can stop the Buckeyes (6-1, 4-0 Big Ten). They've won five straight overall, 25 in a row against conference foes including their Big Ten championship game victories, an FBS-leading 12 consecutive true road games and a conference-record 11 straight road games against league foes by double digits.

And this dominant victory resembled so many others along the way. After Henderson broke a 7-all tie with a 21-yard TD run late in the first quarter, the short-handed Hoosiers (2-5, 0-4) never had a chance. Ohio State scored the final 37 points of the first half and Day pulled his starters after three quarters. "When you see things like that, I just think we're hitting and we have the momentum," Stroud said. "Everybody does a great job." For the Hoosiers, there were more struggles. Indiana quarterback Jack Tuttle replaced injured starter Michael Penix Jr. for the second straight week but didn't last long. Tuttle left after appearing to injure his right foot while capping Indiana's opening possession with a 7-yard TD pass to Peyton Hendershot. - Ohio State/AP College Football

C.J. Stroud, who didn't throw a pass in a college football game until five weeks ago, says he's getting better at relaxing amid the chaos. With his sore shoulder feeling better and some early wobbles behind him, Stroud is beginning to look less like an inexperienced freshman and more like Justin Fields, his unflappable predecessor at quarterback who led Ohio State to the College Football Playoff in both years as a starter. "I'm just being more comfortable," Stroud said after throwing five touchdowns in the No. 7 Buckeyes' 66-17 pounding of Maryland on Saturday. "I mean, being myself. I'm really just relaxing back there, and I think my teammates have really helped me. And I feel like we're starting to roll, get momentum." Coach Ryan Day sees it, too. "I think his preparation has been excellent," Day said. "I think he sees the field well. He's got some good players around him, but he's also making really good throws. His timing is right, he's seeing the field, making good decisions. And so that is allowing us to run the offense and to be very efficient." Ohio State scored on nine straight possessions and piled up 598 yards of offense as the Buckeyes (5-1, 3-0 Big Ten) had their way with the Terps (4-2, 1-2). Stroud threw for 406 yards, including two touchdown passes each to star wideouts Chris Olave and Garrett Wilson against a depleted Maryland secondary. "Last week and this week, we were damn near perfect," Olave said. - Ohio State/AP College Football

C.J. Stroud threw five touchdowns passes, Ohio State scored on nine straight possessions and the No. 7 Buckeyes steamrolled Maryland 66-17 on Saturday. Stroud and the Buckeyes (5-1, 3-0 Big Ten) had their way with Terps. The freshman quarterback was 24 for 33 for 406 yards and threw two touchdown passes each to star wideouts Chris Olave and Garrett Wilson against a depleted Maryland secondary before taking a seat after three quarters. Freshman TreVeyon Henderson, after managing just 17 yards rushing in the first half, finished with 102 and two touchdowns. He also caught a 26-yard TD pass in the first half. Master Teague also had a touchdown plunge as Ohio State beat Maryland for the seventh consecutive time.

It wasn't until the Buckeyes' 10th and final drive of the game, when the regulars were all out of the game, that the Terps managed to stop them on downs. Maryland was routed for the second straight week. Taulia Tagovailoa threw five interceptions last week as Iowa upended the Terps 51-14. Tagovailoa threw two late picks against the Buckeyes on Saturday, but turnovers weren't really the problem. The Terps offense couldn't string together enough positive plays together - and their defense just couldn't stop Ohio State. Tagovailoa, who came in the game leading the Big Ten in completion percentage, was 28 for 39 for 279 yards and two touchdowns for Maryland (4-2, 1-2). - Ohio State/AP College Football

Greg Schiano of Rutgers has a warning for the rest of the teams in the Big Ten Conference: No. 11 Ohio State is finding its stride. C.J. Stroud threw for 330 yards and a career-high five touchdowns after sitting out a game to rest a shoulder and the Buckeyes won their 20th straight conference game with a 52-13 victory over Rutgers on Saturday. What everyone saw was a dominant Ohio State (4-1, 2-0) put a complete performance on display, especially on offense. The nation's No. 2 offense scored on its first six possessions and had its defense deliver a pick-6.

Stroud connected with Chris Olave on touchdown passes of 56 and 11 yards, found Garrett Wilson on a 32-yard catch-and-run, and hit tight ends Jeremy Ruckert and Mitch Rossi on scoring passes of 19 and 1 yard, respectively. The freshman, who threw four TD passes against Minnesota in the opener, finished 17 of 23 and did not throw an interception. Olave finished with five catches for a team-high 119 yards. "This is this is what he's capable of," Day said about Stroud. "And now he's got to bring it through and be consistent." Ohio State has beaten Rutgers eight straight times. The Buckeyes outgained the Scarlet Knights 541-346, flowed through a defense that had given up just 54 points in its first four games, and intercepted Noah Vedral three times. - Ohio State/AP College Football

C.J. Stroud's mind was not right as he sparred with first-game jitters, feeling "kind of all over the place" in his debut as Ohio State's starting quarterback. Playing for the Buckeyes comes with plenty of pressure. It also brings plenty of help. Stroud passed for 294 yards and four touchdowns, and the fourth-ranked Buckeyes kept coach Ryan Day unbeaten in Big Ten play with a 45-31 victory over Minnesota on a rainy Thursday night. Ohio State trailed at halftime (14-10) for the first time in a regular season game under Day, but time in the locker room was all Stroud needed to settle in. He passed for 246 yards in the second half. "Everybody was encouraging me, telling me I can do it. My teammates all have belief in me," said Stroud, who went 13 for 22 with one interception.

Said Day, who is 24-2 overall and 16-0 in conference games starting his third full year on the job: "We weren't going to play it close to the vest. That's not how we do it here." The Buckeyes flashed their five-star speed with two 70-plus-yard scores in the opener, one early on a run off right end by Miyan Williams and one late on a third-down screen to true freshman TreVeyon Henderson. Chris Olave had touchdown catches of 38 and 61 yards, and Garrett Wilson scored on a 56-yard reception that gave Ohio State the lead for good at 24-21 midway through the third quarter. - Ohio State/AP College Football

When Ohio State wide receiver Garrett Wilson thinks of a comparison to C.J. Stroud, the Buckeyes' newly named starting quarterback, he turns to the NFL, bringing up Russell Wilson, the Seattle Seahawks' signal caller who puts touch on many of his deep throws. "Just the way the ball lands, like falls on a receiver," Wilson said, "You can choose how to play those type of balls. You can let it fall over your shoulder or go up at a high point, depending on which gives you the best chance to make a play. You love having someone who drops the ball on you versus not being able to react as much." A few days after Stroud was named the team's starting quarterback for the upcoming season, prevailing in a preseason competition between Kyle McCord and Jack Miller, he received glowing praise from the receivers who will be on the other end of his passes.

All of them raved about his ball placement, one of the qualities that could allow the redshirt freshman from California to successfully replace Justin Fields behind center despite the lack of college experience. He did not attempt a pass in a game as a backup last fall. "His arm talent is off the charts," said Chris Olave, the preseason All-American who forms a premier pass-catching tandem with Wilson. "He's going to put the ball wherever we need it." - Columbus Dispatch

Twenty-three months after he was a late offer in the Class of 2020, C.J. Stroud will start at quarterback for the Ohio State Buckeyes in their 2021 opener at Minnesota on Sept. 2. Less than a week after head coach Ryan Day said that Stroud had separated himself in the race with Kyle McCord and Jack Miller to replace Justin Fields, the OSU head coach made the announcement official on Saturday.

It was both expected -- Stroud was Fields' backup last season, entered spring football at the front of the pack, and maintained that status every step of the way this August -- and also a remarkable rise for a recruit who jumped into the top of his class in the summer between his junior and senior seasons. "The body of work between the spring, and then also through preseason, he separated himself with his decision-making, his leadership skills, his accuracy," Day said. "I'm excited about what I've seen in camp. There's been a lot of flashes of really good quarterback play...I'm excited about what we've seen for sure. He's shown us all the things that we need to see to be ready to go play Minnesota." Stroud was offered by the Buckeyes in October 2019 after impressing at the Elite 11 recruiting camp in June, when Stroud was still viewed as a three-star recruit. He wound up as nearly a five-star, ranked in the end as the No. 42 recruit and No. 3 QB in the Class of 2020 by 247sports.com. - Cleveland Plain Dealer

C.J. Stroud looked and felt like the leader of Ohio State's quarterback competition prior to Saturday, and the Spring Game only reinforced that assumption. Stroud led a pair of first-half touchdown drives while he, Jack Miller and Kyle McCord took snaps with both Team Brutus and Team Buckeye. He led another to begin the second half, and for the day completed 16 of 22 attempts for 185 yards and two touchdowns. More importantly, Stroud's performance featured the most sizzle and fewest mistakes. While all three quarterbacks were given equal opportunity to compete, the assumption all along was that Stroud entered in an advantageous position.

He was called on to fill in for Justin Fields mid-game twice in 2020, including in the playoff semifinal against Clemson. Stroud has walked and practiced with the poise one might expect from someone who assumes he had to be beaten out for the job. No one in scarlet or gray is talking specifics about who they believe leads the competition. The players say their confidence that OSU will have a strong starter in place on opening day continues to grow. "I believe in all three of them," defensive end Zach Harrison said. "Whenever Coach Day says 'You're the guy,' I have all my faith in him." - Cleveland Plain Dealer

Justin Fields left in the second quarter of Ohio State football's game against Michigan State after taking a bad hit and might have given us a glimpse at the Buckeyes' QB future. The Buckeyes were always going to keep things as close as possible between Jack Miller and C.J. Stroud as true freshmen. The only way we'd get any indication of who might be leading a battle that will soon add 2021 commit Kyle McCord was if Fields had to leave a game. It was only for a single play -- a handoff to Master Teague -- but Stroud got the call over Miller and Gunnar Hoak, who's in his second season on the roster. Fields returned as OSU built a 28-0 halftime lead. It was Stroud's second snap as a Buckeye, following one play late in the win over Rutgers. Miller played six snaps in the season opener against Nebraska, scoring his first points in college football. - Cleveland Plain Dealer
