Tyler Shough passed for four touchdowns in his Louisville debut, freshman Isaac Brown added a 77-yard scoring run and the Cardinals scored on six of their first seven possessions to overwhelm Austin Peay 62-0 in Saturday's season opener for both teams. L ouisville flexed its muscle right away against the FCS Governors and never let up in the inaugural meeting between schools that each won at least nine games and reached the postseason last year. The Cardinals gained 56 yards on their first three plays al one, though that game-opening drive stalled near the red zone and they had to settle for Brock Travelstead's 30-yard field goal. They added seven offensive touchdowns from there, with Shough's arm leading the way toward a 38-0 halftime lead. The Te xas Tech transfer completed 18 of 24 passes for 232 yards in just two quarters, while his TD total tied Browning Nagle for the best starting debut by a Louisville QB. Jadon Thompson pulled in two of those scores for 33 and 5 yards, the second score comin g just two plays after T.J. Capers' 29-yard interception return to the Austin Peay 13. Ja'Corey Brooks and tight end Mark Redman caught scoring passes of 9 and 21 yards, while Keyjuan Brown rushed for a 4-yard score as Louisville outgained APSU 321-82 at the break. - AP College Football

Oregon will face its former starting quarterback in 2023. Tyler Shough, who started for UO in 2020 and has spent the past two seasons at Texas Tech, announced he'll be returning to the Red Raiders for his senior season. Texas Tech hosts Oregon on Sept. 9 . "Based on where I feel like I can go in the draft next year and also because I love this team so much and a lot of guys coming back, including coach (Joey) McGuire, coach (Zach) Kittley," Shough said of his reason for returning for a sixth year of coll ege football. "I have such a great relationship with them and all the guys on staff to where it's just like, why would I want to leave when I feel like we're building that momentum where I really want to be a part of something special, especially with su ch a great team and a close-knit unit."Shough completed 59.9% of his passes for 1,304 yards with seven touchdowns and four interceptions and ran for 269 yards and four scores in seven games this season, missing six weeks with a left shoulder injur y. He led Texas Tech to a 42-25 win against Mississippi in the Texas Bowl on Wednesday night and was named the game's MVP. - The Oregonian

Tyler Shough threw for 242 yards and a touchdown and ran for two more scores as Texas Tech took advantage of three early turnovers to build a big lead and held on for a 42-25 win over Ole Miss in the Texas Bowl on Wednesday night. Shough, who finished wi th a career-high 111 yards rushing, accounted for three TDs in the first two quarters to help the Red Raiders (8-5) to a 26-7 halftime lead. Ole Miss quarterback Jaxson Dart had 361 yards passing with two TD throws and a scoring run. But, he threw two of his three interceptions and lost a fumble in the first half to put the Rebels in a huge hole. The victory gives Texas Tech its first eight-win season since 2013 and caps a successful debut for first-year coach Joey McGuire, who was given a new six-year, $26.6 million contract earlier Wednesday. The loss continues a terrible stretch for Ole Miss (8-5), which dropped its final four games, and five of its last six, after opening the season 7-0. The Rebels played a sloppy game with five turnovers and eight penalties for 86 yards and had two defenders ejected for targeting. Ole Miss scored consecutive touchdowns to get within 35-25 with three minutes to go. But the Rebels attempted an onside kick after that, but Texas Tech's Loic Fouonji grabbed it a nd returned it 44 yards to push the lead to 42-25. The Rebels cut the lead to 26-13 on an 11-yard touchdown pass from Dart to Jordan Watkins with about nine minutes left in the third quarter. SaRodorick Thompson scored on a 1-yard run early in the fourth quarter, but Tech’s 2-point conversion run failed to leave the Red Raiders up 32-13. Dayton Wade fumbled on the next drive by Ole Miss to give Texas Tech the ball back, and the Red Raiders settled for a field goal to extend the lead to 35-13 with 9 1/ 2 minutes left. The Rebels finished with 197 yards rushing, led by freshman Quinshon Judkins, who had 91. Judkins finishes the season with 1,567 yards rushing, which is the second-most by a freshman in SEC history behind Hershel Walker, who had 1,616. - Texas Tech/AP College Football

Trey Wolff made a 35-yard field goal in overtime after a tying kick in the final seconds of regulation, and Texas Tech erased an 18-point deficit in a 51-48 win over Oklahoma on Saturday night. Dillon Gabriel threw for 449 yards and six touchdowns, but t he OU quarterback was knocked out for a play in OT after a hard hit from safety Reggie Pearson Jr. on a catch on a throwback play. The Sooners were unsettled on offense and had to settle for a 34-yard field goal try from Zach Schmit after Gabriel was sac ked. The kick was wide right. After Wolff's winner, Texas Tech fans stormed the field just as they did after an OT victory over Texas in September. The Red Raiders ended a 10-game losing streak against OU and beat the Sooners and Longhorns in the same se ason for the first time in coach Joey McGuire's first season.Texas Tech (7-5, 5-4 Big 12) secured a winning conference record for the first time since 2009. The Sooners (6-6, 3-6) couldn't hold a 24-6 second-quarter lead, finishing without a winni ng record in the regular season for the first time since 1998 in a disappointing debut for coach Brent Venables. Texas Tech's Tyler Shough threw for a career-high 436 yards with two scores, but he was intercepted by C.J. Coldon to set up Schmit's tiebrea king 43-yard field goal with four minutes remaining. Shough put the Red Raiders in position for the tie in the final seconds. Wolff's first kick was blocked by Josh Ellison, but Venables had called a timeout. Wolff made the 43-yarder on the second try. O klahoma's Marvin Mims Jr. had a career-high 162 yards receiving and two touchdowns, and Brayden Willis also had two TD grabs. Eric Gray rushed for 161 yards. Jerand Bradley also finished with a career best in receiving yards with 173 for Texas Tech, and he had a 44-yard tiebreaking TD catch in the fourth quarter, one of six lead changes in the second half or overtime. - Texas Tech/AP College Football

Texas Tech quarterback Tyler Shough will miss significant time again after re-injuring his non-throwing shoulder in the season opener. Red Raiders coach Joey McGuire said Monday that he expects Shough to be out three to six weeks. The quarterback, in his second year starting at Tech after three seasons at Oregon, has an examination scheduled for Wednesday, and surgery is a possibility. "That's where it could prolong to six weeks if it is," first-year Tech coach McGuire said during his weekly news confer ence. Shough missed the final eight games last season after breaking his left collarbone during the fourth game.He started Saturday night and injured that same shoulder in the first half of Tech's season-opening 63-10 win over Murray State. McGuir e said this injury is "not exactly" where it was last year, but was still related to the collarbone. Shough didn't have surgery after getting hurt last season. Texas Tech's depth chart for Saturday's home game against No. 24 Houston lists Donovan Smith a s the starting quarterback, ahead of Behren Morton. Shough was listed as third on the chart. - AP College Football

Texas Tech announced the largest investment into its football program to date on Monday as the athletics department unveiled plans for an approximately $200 million facilities project. The school plans to construct a new, four-story south end zone buildi ng in Jones AT&T Stadium, connecting via skybridge to the Sports Performance Center and the newly planned Womble Football Center. The project will be largely funded through private fundraising and annual athletics department revenue streams, the school s aid.Pending approval from the Texas Tech University System Board of Regents, the project is slated for groundbreaking immediately following the 2022 football season, with plans to open prior to the 2024 season. "This is an historic day as we annou nce our intentions to construct what will be the premier football facility in the Big 12 Conference and nationally," Texas Tech director of athletics Kirby Hocutt said. "This facility, when completed, will not take a backseat to any other school in the c ountry. We have received tremendous interest from many of our supporters regarding this project and anticipate that continuing as we get closer to officially breaking ground. "Our intent is to be the top athletics department in the country. As we look in to the long-term future of college athletics, this project will set the stage for what we anticipate as decades of success on the gridiron for our Red Raiders." - Dallas Morning News

Shough's first season in Lubbock was lackluster. The junior threw for six touchdowns and three interceptions before breaking his collarbone four games into the year. The arm talent is obvious, but the decision making was questionable at best during his s hort season. That pattern repeated itself in Texas Tech's spring game, where Shough through an all too familiar pick-six while projecting a throw to the sidelines. Shough needs to be better, and he can be. All eyes should be on No. 12 to be QB1 heading i nto August. - Dallas Morning News

The identity of Tech's starting quarterback for the Liberty Bowl is an unanswered question. Tech quarterback Tyler Shough is not yet medically cleared to return from the broken collarbone he suffered Sept. 25 at Texas, running backs coach DeAndre Smith s aid Thursday. "We're still working through that," Smith said. "What you try to use bowl practices for is to evaluate the guys as you go. So we're going to evaluate them all through bowl prep, and then we'll make a decision later on down the road." Shough started Tech's first four games of the season, Henry Colombi the next five and Donovan Smith the past three. - Lubbock Avalanche Journal

Texas Tech quarterback Tyler Shough threw for 399 yards and four touchdown passes to spark a 54-21 victory against Florida International on Saturday at Jones AT&T Stadium. The Red Raiders shook loose from a tight game after the first quarter with four to uchdowns in the second period and racked up 264 yards along the way. They finished the night with 584 total yards. In the best offensive night this year for Texas Tech (3-0), Shough was an effective catalyst. He spread the ball around to 11 receivers and twice completed eight passes in a row, going 26 of 35.In the first two games, the Red Raiders ran only 102 plays and star receiver Erik Ezukanma had 17 of the team's 27 receptions. He faced double-teams most of the night and Shough adjusted. "We got to spread the wealth a little more and you saw guys making plays," Texas Tech coach Matt Wells said. Added Shough, "It was just part of the progressions. Guys were getting open and I got them the ball." The Red Raiders needed that spark after falling behind 7-0 in the first quarter. The Panthers (1-2) blended inside power runs by D'vonte Price and deep throws by Max Bortenschlager to piece together an 88-yard drive. Price bulled into the end zone with 6:27 to go in the opening quarter for a 7-0 lead . Meanwhile, Texas Tech's offense scuffled. The Red Raiders' first two possessions ended in punts, and when they forced FIU into a three-and-out, returner Adrian Frye muffed the ball to give it back to the Panthers. - Texas Tech/AP College Football

Texas Tech coach Matt Wells on Tuesday officially named Tyler Shough to be the Red Raiders' starting quarterback, confirming an outcome that had been expected for weeks. The 6-foot-5, 225-pound junior from Chandler (Ariz.) Hamilton transferred to Tech in March from Oregon, where he started all seven games the Ducks played last season. He's been competing primarily with Henry Colombi, who started four games for the Red Raiders last season and was a 1,000-yard passer. The others in the conversation since training camp began have been redshirt freshman Donovan Smith from Frenship and true freshman Behren Morton from Eastland, the latter a consensus state top-50 signee. The Red Raiders also have two-time NJCAA passing leader Parker McNeil, who came t o Tech as a walk-on transfer from Troy, and former state top-100 recruit Maverick McIvor. "As I've said for several months now, this is the most talented our quarterback room has been since we arrived here at Texas Tech," Wells said in a statement Tech r eleased. "After evaluating the entire body of work, we feel as a staff that Tyler gives this team the best chance to win. He is well-respected by his teammates, a tireless worker and has developed a strong understanding of what we want to do as an offens e. "Tyler's arrival has only increased the competitiveness of our quarterback room as Henry Colombi has put together possibly the best camp of his career. Our staff has confidence in Henry's ability to lead this offense, and I know he will continue to pr epare with the same mindset. Donovan and Behren both have bright futures here at Texas Tech, and they will continue to battle for backup reps." - Lubbock Avalanche Journal

It may seem daring to claim that someone who's been slotted as a top pick in the 2022 NFL draft will be better than advertised. But even with all the buzz that Shough has created, he's been met with cautious optimism from Red Raider fans. The quarterback position at Texas Tech has been a lackluster revolving door since the Patrick Mahomes Era. But after a handful of grim seasons in Lubbock, Shough appears to have the tools to take the program's offense back to something that resembles its glory days. | | | | |
