  Nathan Walker scored two first-quarter touchdowns and Wofford beat The Citadel 31-11 on Saturday. The win secured a repeat Southern Conference championship and a berth in the FCS playoffs. The Terriers (8-3, 7-1), ranked No. 17 in the FCS Coaches poll, forced The Citadel (6-6, 4-4) to punt on the game-opening possession, then drove 44 yards in six plays to grab a 7-0 lead on Walker's run from the 2. Wofford forced another punt -- holding The Citadel to 21 yards in its first two possessions -- and Walker struck again, rushing eight yards to cap a 72-yard drive. Walker finished with 10 carries for 94 yards. Jacquez Allen and Blake Morgan also scored rushing TDs for the Terriers. Trailing 31-3, the Bulldogs scored a touchdown with 4:45 left in the game when Brandon Rainey and Dante Smith teamed for a 31-yard pass play.   Blake Morgan ran for 147 yards and a touchdown and No. 21 Wofford fell behind early before topping No. 9 Furman, 24-7, on Saturday in a Southern Conference showdown for first place. Wofford later clinched the conference's automatic bid to the FCS playoffs due to Chattanooga's 34-33 win over The Citadel. Wayne Anderson had a 63-yard scoring run to put the Paladins up 7-0. Joe Newman scored on a 7-yard run to tie it and Wofford took the lead for good on Newman's 2-yard TD run just 35 seconds into the second quarter.

Morgan's 29-yard TD run in the third and Luke Carter's 20-yard field capped the scoring. Wofford (8-3, 6-1) moved a half-game ahead of Furman. The Terriers close out the regular season on the road at The Citadel. Furman (7-4, 6-2), which had a three-game win streak snapped, closes out against nonconference opponent High Point.   Ryan Lovelace ran for two touchdowns to lead Wofford's high-powered rushing attack in a 41-7 victory over Mercer on Saturday. The Terriers (6-3, 5-1 Southern Conference), who came in ranked second in FCS rushing at 333.9 yards per game, piled up 394 in notching their sixth straight win against the Bears (4-6, 4-3) since 2013. Wofford, ranked No. 24 in the STATS FCS Top 25, will host to first-place Furman (7-3, 6-1) next Saturday.

D'mauriae VanCleave ran 44 yards and Lovelace 41 for second-quarter touchdowns and the Terriers led 20-7 at halftime. Lovelace added an 8-yard score and Jason Hill caught a 23-yard TD pass in the third quarter from Joe Newman before Jacquez Allen closed the scoring in the fourth quarter with a 6-yard run. Lovelace had 76 yards with eight Terriers rushing into double figures.   OCT 28 SOCON OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Joe Newman, Wofford, Sr., QB, Riverdale, Ga.,...Wofford quarterback Joe Newman earned his second straight weekly honor after running for 66 yards and three touchdowns and throwing for 134 yards in the Terriers' 35-34, overtime win over Chattanooga, which entered the contest alone in first place in the SoCon standings. The senior from Riverdale, Georgia, had a 3-yard TD run in the second quarter and a 10-yard scoring run in the third to give Wofford a 21-14 lead.

After the Mocs took a 28-21 lead with 2:08 left in regulation, Newman led Wofford on a 13-play, 65-yard scoring drive in just 1:49 to force overtime. There, Newman ran for a 25-yard touchdown on the first play and UTC failed to convert a two-point conversion attempt in its OT possession as the Terriers moved into a tie for first in the league standings.   Joe Newman scored on the first play in overtime and Wofford edged Chattanooga 35-34 after the Mocs failed on a 2-point conversion try to give the Terriers their fifth straight win Saturday. Newman kept the ball on an option to score in overtime and Luke Carter converted the PAT. When it was the Mocs' turn, Ailym Ford powered over from the 3 but Nick Tiano's conversion pass on a broken play was dropped among a crowd in the end zone. Wofford (5-2, 4-1 Southern Conference) tied the game with 19 seconds left in the fourth quarter on D'mauriae VanCleave's 6-yard run around left end. He was almost tripped up in the backfield before racing to the end zone and diving on the pylon. Newman, who passed for 134 yards, ran for three touchdowns as part of a Wofford rushing attack that gained 318 yards.   OCT 21 SOUTHERN CONFERENCE OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Joe Newman, Wofford, Sr., QB, Riverdale, Ga.,...Playing just three quarters in Wofford's 59-7 win over Western Carolina on Saturday, Terrier quarterback Joe Newman ran for 104 yards and two touchdowns and threw for 162 yards and two scores, completing seven of his 11 attempts. The 100-yard rushing game was his third of the season and sixth of his career, while the 162 passing yards were a season high as the senior from Riverdale, Georgia, averaged 10.4 yards on 10 carries and 23.1 yards per completion. Newman was one of three Wofford players to rush for at least 100 yards as the Terriers, who have won four straight after an 0-2 start to the season, amassed a season-best 613 yards of total offense.   D'Mauriae VanCleave returned a punt 87 yards for a touchdown to give Wofford the lead and the Bulldogs ran away with a 59-7 win over Western Carolina in a Southern Conference battle Saturday. Joe Newman ran for two touchdowns and threw for a third as Wofford erupted for 28 second-quarter points to take control of the game. He finished with a pair of TD passes. Jaylin Young pulled in a 69-yard pass on the first play from scrimmage to put the Catamounts (1-6-0-4) in front with their only score of the game.

Blake Morgan capped an eight-play, 83-yard drive to get Wofford even with 5:46 left in the first quarter. After KeiAndre Sanders pulled down a 7-yard pass from Newman with four seconds left in the first half, the Terriers had taken a 35-7 advantage. VanCleave found open space between Western Carolina's two deep safeties and pulled in a long pass from Newman for a 39-yard touchdown in the third quarter and, minutes later, Jacquez Allen broke free for a 78-yard touchdown run and Miller Mosley added a 46-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.   Joe Newman ran for 185 yards and four touchdowns, Miller Mosely ran for a score and Wofford's ground game ground down East Tennessee State in a 35-17 win on Saturday. The Terriers (3-2, 2-1 Southern Conference) gained 409 of their 464 total yards on the ground while holding the Buccaneers to 258 total yards. Newman scored on runs of 1 and 59 yards before Tyler Keltner kicked a 27-yard field goal for the Buccaneers (2-4, 0-3). Newman's 8-yard scoring run on the next possession and his 15-yard TD run on the following possession, set up by Ryan Titus' fumble recovery, made it 28-3 at halftime after the Terriers held the Buccaneers to 53 yards of total offense. East Tennessee State fared better in the second half, with Quay Holmes scoring on 2-yard run in the third quarter and Trey Mitchell hitting Holmes on a 26-yard TD pass early in the fourth.   Joe Newman threw two touchdown passes and ran for a third and Blake Morgan ran for two scores as Wofford won its second straight game, knocking off VMI 51-36 in a Southern Conference battle Saturday afternoon that was delayed for two hours due to lightning. Wofford lost its SoCon opener to Samford in Week 2 but knocked off Gardner-Webb in a nonconference game a week ago to snap a two-game losing streak. The win is its eighth straight over the Keydets. The Terriers piled up 439 rushing yards and four touchdowns on the ground. Newman was 5 of 8 for 142 yards passing and ran 10 times for 97.

VMI drove 68 yards in eight plays on the first series of the game and Alex Ramsey capped the drive with a one-yard touchdown plunge. After Ryan Lovelace raced 37 yards for a touchdown to tie, the game went into a weather delay. Once play resumed, Grant Clemons booted a 37-yard field goal to give VMI the lead, 10-7, but Wofford scored four straight touchdowns to take a 35-24 lead at halftime.   Joe Newman passed for 67 yards and a touchdown and ran for 155 yards and another score as Wofford picked up its first win of the season, rolling past Gardner-Webb 49-10 in a nonconference game Saturday night. After starting the season ranked No. 8 in the Football Championship Subdivision, the Terriers lost their opener to South Carolina State, 28-13, and were upset by Samford 21-14. Wofford's Blake Morgan opened the scoring with a 2-yard run and Jacquez Allen added a 46-yard run for a score at the end of the first quarter.

Newman connected with T.J. Luther on a 62-yard touchdown pass as the Terriers built a 28-3 lead at halftime. Wofford (1-2) rushed for 490 yards against the Bulldogs in a 45-14 win a year ago. Saturday, the Terriers ran for 489 yards and six touchdowns. Morgan had two scores and gained 67 yards on 10 carries. Newman carried 11 times.
