An Arizona team that owns the nation's longest losing streak was just the salve the Colorado Buffaloes needed. "With everything we've been working on the last couple of weeks with our bye it was good to see that it paid off in a convincing fashion," coach Karl Dorrell said Saturday after Colorado snapped a four-game skid with a 34-0 thrashing of the Wildcats at Folsom Field. It was the first conference shutout for the Buffaloes (2-4, 1-2 Pac-12) since they beat Oklahoma State by the same score on Oct. 1, 2005, when they were in the Big 12. "This is a really good win for us as a program because all three areas scored touchdowns." Dorrell said. The Buffs scored on a blocked punt and an interception in addition to a long pass from Brendon Lewis as they extended the nation's longest losing streak to 18 games.

Stumbling since a season-opening rout of Northern Colorado, the Buffaloes shook off their four-game losing streak thanks to Trevor Woods' 36 -yard scoop-and-score of the punt he blocked and defensive end Carson Wells' 50-yard interception return for a touchdown on consecutive Arizona possessions. Lewis followed up with a 62-yard scoring strike to Brenden Rice that put Colorado ahead 27-0 late in the third quarter. Lewis finished 12 of 19 for 248 yards and two touchdowns and Rice caught three passes for 111 yards. - Colorado/AP College Football

Kaleb Eleby threw a pair of touchdown passes to Skyy Moore and Western Michigan won its fourth straight game, defeating Buffalo 24-17 on Saturday in a Mid-American Conference opener. Eleby hit a streaking Moore with a 64-yard strike to give the Broncos (4-1, 1-0) the lead with 9 1/2 minutes remaining. After Buffalo went three-and-out for the fourth straight possession, the Broncos burned almost six minutes off the clock before La'Darius Jefferson scored from a yard out. Kyle Vantrease's 1-yard keeper cut the lead to seven with 1:17 remaining but WMU recovered an onside kick.

After WMU's Parker Sampson had missed two field goal attempts, punter Nick Mihalic kicked a 26-yard field goal to tie it at 10 earlier in the fourth quarter. Eleby found Moore in the right corner of the end zone for a 12-yard score and a 7-0 lead in the opening quarter before Buffalo tied it less than 30 seconds later on Ron Cook's 55-yard sprint up the middle. The Bulls (2-3, 0-1) had the lead with Alex McNulty's 37-yard field goal in the third. The game featured the MAC's top two receivers in Buffalo's Quian Williams and WMU's Corey Crooms but it was Moore piling up a career-high 163 yards on 11 catches.   Kaleb Eleby threw for 336 yards and three touchdowns and Western Michigan stunned Pittsburgh 44-41 on Saturday. La'Darius Jefferson ran for 78 yards and two scores for the Broncos (2-1), who came into Heinz Field as a 15-point underdog and left it with their first victory over a Power 5 school in five years. Kenny Pickett tossed six touchdowns for the Panthers (2-1) and threw for 382 yards to move past Hall of Famer Dan Marino into second-place on the school's all-time passing list but Pitt fell flat a week after a stirring victory on the road at Tennessee.

Western Michigan rolled up 516 yards of total offense and held the ball for 40 minutes. Pitt did its best to help the Broncos along the way. Eleby's 54-yard touchdown pass to Corey Crooms that put Western Michigan up 34-27 in the third quarter came after Panther defensive backs Erick Hallett II and Brandon Hill collided, allowing Crooms to spin away and race to the end zone. Pitt quickly tied it on Pickett's second touchdown pass of the day to tight end Lucas Krull but the Broncos responded, as they did each and every time the Panthers threatened to take control. Eleby led a 12-play, 75-yard drive that ended with Jefferson bulling over from 3 yards out to make it 41-34. Western Michigan sacked Pickett on fourth-and-6 to snuff out a Pitt response and Parker Sampson's 29-yard field goal gave the Broncos just enough cushion. - Western Michigan/AP College Football

La'Darius Jefferson rushed for 106 yards with two touchdowns, Sean Tyler added 78 rushing yards and another score as Western Michigan blanked Illinois State 28-0 in its home opener on Saturday. The Broncos (1-1) rebounded from an opening weekend thrashing at Michigan of the Big Ten Conference, amassing 407 yards of total offense against Illinois State and holding the Redbirds (1-1) to just 57. The Broncos were driving, up 28-0 with 5:30 left in the game when the stadium lights went out, causing a brief delay.

Western Michigan quickly doused Illinois State's hopes for an upset, driving 75 yards on a game-opening drive that consumed 5:22 and ended with a Jefferson run from the 1. The Redbirds, an FCS school, had defeated FBS opponents in their last two matchups. Saturday, their first five possessions ended with four punts and an interception. Illinois State was 1 for 13 on third down conversions with a total of four first downs. Bryce Jefferson passed for 29 yards with an interception and 10 Redbirds gained 28 on the ground. Corvin Moment led the Broncos defense with six tackles - all unassisted including a sack and three tackles for loss. Kaleb Eleby was 15-for-21 passing for 174 yards and a TD. Eleby entered the game with the top passer rating (195.1) among returning FBS quarterbacks. - Western Michigan/AP College Football

Statistically, Western Michigan's offense was one of the most explosive units in college football last season, cracking the top 25 in five categories and leading the nation in yards per completion. The NFL took notice, as speedy wide receiver D'Wayne Eskridge went in the second round of April's NFL draft, and the big-play nature of the Broncos' attack also caught the eye of Bryce Nunnelly, a two-time all-conference wide receiver at Tennessee Chattanooga.

The 6-foot, 195-pound senior entered the transfer portal following his team's coronavirus-shortened 2020 campaign, and when looking for a landing spot, two things stood out about WMU: the Broncos' high-scoring offense and his connection with receivers coach Greg Harbaugh, who coached Nunnelly's position at Chattanooga in 2018. "I would say that one of the biggest things - well, there were a few good things - but one was that the offense was really good," Nunnelly said of his WMU pick. "They averaged - I don't know exactly how many it was, close to 40, if not more than 40 points last year. It's an RPO-heavy offense, the receivers are heavily involved, and also coach Harbaugh, I had a previous relationship with him at Chattanooga. He was here, and that was another big reason why I decided to come here." Nunnelly's estimation of the Broncos' scoring offense wasn't far off, with WMU averaging 41.7 points per game in 2020, which was good for ninth nationally. - Kalamazoo Gazette

  08/16/21 - AJ GreenrSr/2027, Western Michigan, 5-10, 216 (DS#999 RB) + More +

One of the highest-rated players in Arkansas' 2021 recruiting class is adjusting to college football like many hoped he would. A former 4-star recruit from powerhouse Tulsa Union, running back AJ Green has already made a strong impression on his coaches and teammates just four days into preseason practice. For some newcomers, it can take time to shake off early nerves. Grasping concepts and truly showcasing ability isn't always instantaneous, either. But Green, by all accounts, doesn't fall into that category. "He's got a calmness about himself for being a freshman," Arkansas running backs coach Jimmy Smith said Monday. "You'll find that he's just always calm. Nothing rattles him. For three days, I haven't seen him rattled by any situation. "He just keeps playing and keeps it going. That's a big deal." Green, 5-11, 200 pounds, is among a host of running backs pushing to become the Razorbacks' No. 2 option behind Trelon Smith, a redshirt junior who made the most of his extended playing time following Rakeem Boyd's opt out in 2020. - Northwest Arkansas Times
