  07/11/22 - Michael Penix Jr.rSr/2024, Washington, 6-2, 216 (DS#5 QB) + More +

Following the out-of-nowhere slide, Washington needed a fresh start and got one when it hired head coach Kalen DeBoer, who led Fresno State to a 9-3 record in the regular season in 2021. A veteran offensive coordinator, DeBoer is expected to re-energize a Husky attack that managed just 21.5 points per game last year - the program's worst average since 2008. Two-year starting quarterback Dylan Morris is back, but he threw 12 interceptions, the most in the Pac-12. Overall, the Huskies threw 16 interceptions. Former Indiana starter Michael Penix Jr., was brought in to compete for the job.

The best season of his career came in 2019, when DeBoer was his position coach and offensive coordinator. Around the quarterback, there is a load of talent at receiver and some intriguing possibilities at running back, where a pair of transfers - Aaron Dumas (New Mexico) and Wayne Taulapapa (Virginia) - have been added. The offensive line was a disappointment last year, but returns a lot of experience, including left tackle Jaxson Kirkland. DeBoer's offenses have averaged at least 31.8 points the last four years. In addition to coaching Penix during his breakout season, he helped Jake Haener (a former Husky) have a sensational season at Fresno State last year. - Daily Camera

  06/29/22 - Will RogersrSr/2025, Washington, 6-2, 207 (DS#17 QB) + More +

Mississippi State head football coach Mike Leach has received a two-year contract extension, MSU confirmed Tuesday morning. Leach's new contract now runs through the 2025 season, a four-year term that is the longest allowable by Mississippi law. His original deal was for four years at $5 million per season. The former Texas Tech and Washington State coach has gone 11-13 in two seasons in Starkville, making a bowl game in 2020 and 2021.

The Bulldogs beat Tulsa in the Armed Forces Bowl in Leach's first year and lost to Texas Tech in the Liberty Bowl last December. Leach's extension comes ahead of what could be a promising year for the Bulldogs, who return quarterback Will Rogers and a host of talent on offense and defense. MSU showed some of its potential last season, winning games against NC State, Texas A&M, Kentucky and Auburn. But a tough schedule could limit Mississippi State's success in 2022. - The Dispatch

  06/27/22 - Will RogersrSr/2025, Washington, 6-2, 207 (DS#17 QB) + More +

Will Rogers believes Mississippi State's football team is ready to take the next step into becoming a Southeastern Conference championship contender in 2022. The junior quarterback said they will have to become more consistent. Mississippi State had a 7-6 record with a 34-7 loss to Texas Tech in the Liberty Bowl last season. "You just have to take it a week at a time," Rogers said while working as a camp counselor at the Manning Passing Academy at Nicholls in Thibodaux on Friday. "We're trying to be consistent and more efficient. There were some games last year we probably should have won, which is why they say you have to take it week in and week out and one game at a time. "If we do that and we're able to compete every single week, then I think we'll have a pretty good chance."

The 6-foot-2, 210-pound Rogers played in 13 games as a sophomore last year. He passed for 4,739 yards, 36 touchdowns, nine interceptions and 364.5 yards per game. He completed 74% of his passes. Rogers said working in Mississippi State coach Mike Leach's "Air-Raid" offense system has helped him improve. "I'm going on my third year with Coach Leach," Rogers said. "He's done a good job of coaching me and teaching me things. We're looking forward to a big year. I hope we can put up a lot of points and score a lot." As he prepares for the season, Rogers said he has worked to improve his techniques both physically and mentality. He spent time working with David Morris of QB Country in Mobile, Alabama. - The Clarion Ledger

  06/15/22 - Jordan LolohearSo/2025, Washington, 6-2, 265 (DS#999 OLB) + More +

Emeka Megwa never participated in a practice or a game at Washington. The redshirt freshman running back and former four-star recruit - as well as junior defensive lineman Draco Bynum and sophomore EDGE Jordan Lolohea - have left the football program, a university spokesperson confirmed Monday. UW currently has 81 scholarship players, four under the 85-man limit, with flexibility to further add via the transfer portal or award scholarships to over-performing walk-ons this summer and fall.

Bynum and Lolohea both earned precious little action in their Husky careers. The 6-4, 280-pound Bynum arrived as a four-star recruit out of Wilsonville (Ore.) High School in 2018, but contributed just one tackle in four seasons and seven career games. Lolohea (6-2, 265) actually signed with Washington in 2017, but a mission trip delayed his arrival until the winter of 2020. The three-star recruit from Salt Lake City East High School made nine tackles in 10 games last fall, after redshirting as a true freshman in 2020. But it was apparent at the end of spring practice that Lolohea didn't factor into UW's future plans. - Seattle Times

Also revealed for the 2022 schedule were specifics for Thursday and Friday games in Pac-12 play. That is preceded by ASU hosting Northern Arizona and followed by a game in Tempe against Eastern Michigan, both of which will appear on Pac-12 Network. The Wildcats host Mississippi State and North Dakota State to round out the nonconference slate, and those two games will appear on FS1.   05/24/22 - Kristopher MollrSr/2023, Washington, 6-0, 214 (DS#87 OLB) + More +

Following an official visit on the weekend of May 14, Moll flipped his commitment from UCF to Washington. He did so despite late offers from Texas and Arizona as well. Now completely healthy, Moll says he's currently sitting at 6-foot-2 and 220 pounds and will arrive in Seattle this summer. At UW, Pitt graduate transfer Cam Bright is expected to step into the starting rotation, following the offseason injury to Edefuan Ulofoshio and Cal transfer of last season's top tackler - Jackson Sirmon. Sophomores Carson Bruener and Alphonzo Tuputala also worked with the starters this spring, while sophomores Daniel Heimuli and Drew Fowler and junior Demario King could compete for rotational reps as well.

But coming off a season in which Washington ranked 10th in the Pac-12 in opponent yards per carry (4.76) and 11th in rushing defense (194 yards allowed per game), Moll knows what the Huskies need. "I know that they're in need of another linebacker. I know I can fit that role," he said. "I know they lost their main guy, Eddy. So with them losing him and bringing in Cam (Bright), they need one more guy that can step up and play right now and lead the team and just be an older guy that's going to make plays and grind and be an example to the younger dudes and help them out. I feel like I can do that for the team." And considering his extended transfer portal stay, the 2020 Phil Steele honorable-mention All-American is thankful to have a team at all. "It's like I had a big old heavy bar on my back," Moll said, "and I just finished my set and can put the bar back up and get ready to go." - Seattle Times

  05/19/22 - Kristopher MollrSr/2023, Washington, 6-0, 214 (DS#87 OLB) + More +

On Monday, College of San Mateo EDGE (and Fife High School alum) Sekai Asoau-Afoa announced a transfer to UW. And less than 24 hours later, the prophecy was fulfilled. Former UAB linebacker Kristopher Moll will play his sixth and final season in Seattle, he tweeted Tuesday, flipping his commitment from Central Florida to Washington. The 6-foot-2, 215-pound linebacker from Miami brings a bevy of legitimate experience to UW. In five seasons and 47 career games, Moll piled up 221 tackles, 27.5 tackles for loss, 13 sacks, nine passes defended, six forced fumbles and two interceptions.

The highlight of his UAB tenure was a stellar 2019 season that included 104 tackles, 16 tackles for loss, nine sacks, four forced fumbles and an interception in 13 games - enough to earn first-team All-Conference USA honors. A Coral Gables High School alum, Moll also compiled Phil Steele Honorable Mention All-America and first-team All-Conference USA recognition in the shortened 2020 season - producing 59 tackles, four tackles for loss and two sacks in eight games. A broken right thumb ended his 2021 campaign after just four games and 14 total tackles. - Seattle Times

  05/19/22 - Jeremiah HunterrSr/2025, Washington, 6-1, 208 (DS#167 WR) + More +

The cornerstone of the Bears youthful and talented receiving corps coming into the 2022 season, 6-2/200 redshirt soph receiver Jeremiah Hunter is the leading returning receiver this season. The former 4 star prep from Central High School in Fresno, strongly considered Oregon before choosing the Bears in the spring of his junior season. Hunter was injured in his 2020 frosh season and didn't play. He played in eight games in 2021, including one start and hauled in 21 receptions for 388 yards, averaging an impressive 18.5 yards per catch. All spring, Hunter looked like a new receiver, hauling in every ball thrown his way and playing with physicality off the line of scrimmage.

What's led to the stellar play and high level of excecution? "I just think it's my confidence," said Hunter. "I was hurt my freshman year, so I have been just taking all that in. Just reading the defenses with BT (Coach Burl Toler III). BT has been breaking down the defenses. "In high school, I knew how to release and all that came natural to me but reading defenses helps a lot and it can determine my route, so I feel like me being hurt allowed me to break everything down and learn the offense as well, too. I feel like over time my confidence is growing and I feel like you can see that now." - Bearinsider.com

  05/17/22 - Kristopher MollrSr/2023, Washington, 6-0, 214 (DS#87 OLB) + More +

Less than one month after UAB linebacker Kristopher Moll announced he would be transferring to UCF, Moll shared on social media Monday that's no longer the plan. "Thank you UCF family but I will be decommitting," Moll wrote on Twitter. "Will make a big announcement tomorrow!" Moll's decision to back off his verbal pledge to the Knights came hours prior to UCF adding Kansas State transfer and former Maryland linebacker Branden Jennings from the NCAA transfer portal.

The 6-foot-2, 215-pound linebacker is a Miami (Fla.) native with five years of experience under his belt. A member of the 2017 signing class, Moll is a super senior. He had the best season of his career in 2019, racking up 103 total tackles with nine sacks and four forced fumbles. After making several watchlists for the 2021 season, Moll suffered an injury that put him on the bench after four games and 14 tackles. Moll will have one year to play for the Huskies who are coming off a 4-8 finish last season. - Kristopher Moll twitter and Orlando Sentinel
