  09/28/19 - *Salvon AhmedJr/2020, Washington, 5-11, 197 (DS#23 RB) + More +

Salvon Ahmed rushed for a career-high 153 yards, including an 89-yard touchdown run in the third quarter, and No. 17 Washington beat No. 21 Southern California 28-14 on Saturday. Ahmed missed last week's win at BYU with a leg injury. But he was back in a big way against the Trojans, breaking off the longest run play for Washington (4-1, 1-1 Pac-12) in 25 years and moments after USC quarterback Matt Fink made his biggest mistake of the day.

With USC (3-2, 2-1) trailing 20-7 and driving, Fink failed to see Elijah Molden dropping into a zone and had a pass intercepted at the Washington 1 as he tried to hit Michael Pittman Jr. Two plays later, Ahmed waited for the hole to open then burst into the open field and ran away from the defense. It was Washington's longest run play since a 91-yard TD run by Napoleon Kaufman in 1994 against San Jose State. Fink, the No. 3 QB when the season started, carved up Utah a week ago throwing for 351 yards after being called into duty when Kedon Slovis went down with a concussion. Fink found passing quite a bit tougher against Washington and its standout secondary. - Washington/AP College Football

  09/21/19 - *Jacob EasonrJr/2020, Washington, 6-6, 231 (DS#5 QB) + More +

Winning games with elite defense is second nature to Washington. The Huskies are quickly silencing doubters who expected them to take a step back this season. Relentless defensive pressure and efficient offense blended together perfectly for No. 22 Washington in a 45-19 victory over BYU on Saturday. The Huskies forced three BYU turnovers and scored a pair of touchdowns off those defensive plays. In four games, Washington has allowed just 18.3 points per contest and held each opponent under 400 yards of total offense. The Huskies' defense resembles past units that led the Pac-12 in scoring defense and total defense each of the previous four seasons. "We got people that are going to show up and work and we're going to execute when we're out there," linebacker Brandon Wellington said. "Sometimes, it's not going to be pretty but we're going to figure out a way to get it done."

Jacob Eason found a way to get it done on offense. Eason threw for 290 yards and three touchdowns while completing 24 of 28 pass attempts. The Huskies (3-1) totaled 477 yards on offense behind his efficient performance. Aaron Fuller, Eason's top target, tallied 91 yards on eight catches. Fuller had one touchdown catch and returned a punt 88 yards for another score. Eason put together his second straight 200-yard passing game. Washington has won all three games this season in which he has passed for at least 200 yards. "There's always something that's better from week to week," Huskies coach Chris Petersen said. "We emphasize it and he's on it." - Washington/AP College Football

Virginia turned the clock back 24 years and the No. 25 Cavaliers handed Florida State another gut-wrenching defeat. The Cavaliers stopped Cam Akers on a final-play run from the 4 on Saturday night and barely hung on for a 31-24 victory that was reminiscent of the one in 1995 when they stopped Warrick Dunn on the final play in handing the Seminoles' their first ACC loss. "Anyone that was in the stadium today witnessed an amazing football game," Virginia coach Bronco Mendenhall said. "Our defensive heart and effort was magical. I won't forget this one ever."

Wayne Taulapapa ran for three touchdowns, the last with 2:34 remaining, to cap a rally that seemed doomed after the Cavaliers were poised to tie it with 6:02 remaining until Brian Delaney was wide right on his extra point try, keeping the Seminoles ahead, 24-23. "After that missed (PAT), it got a lot more serious in the matter of the defense really has to win this game," safety Joey Blount said. The Cavaliers (3-0, 2-0 ACC) stopped Florida State on the next three plays, and Bryce Perkins led Virginia down the field. It took them just six plays to travel 72 yards with Joe Reed ripping off a 22-yard run and Perkins hitting Hasise Dubois for 35 yards to the Florida State 15. - Virginia/AP College Football

After just three plays, Hunter Bryant was celebrating in the end zone. Five plays later, it was Sean McGrew's turn. And after another seven snaps, it was Puka Nacua catching his first collegiate pass for a touchdown. It didn't take long for No. 23 Washington to put last week's surprising home loss in the past. "It was just exciting knowing that doing our job we can do what we want to get done," Bryant said. "We can put points on the board not doing anything special, not doing anything extra, but just doing our own job." Jacob Eason threw a 47-yard touchdown pass to Bryant on the third play of the game and added two more and Washington rebounded with a 52-20 romp over Hawaii on Saturday night.

Eason and the Huskies (2-1) overwhelmed the Rainbow Warriors, taking a 21-0 lead in less than 9 minutes. Eason was 18 of 25 for 262 yards, Richard Newton had three short TD runs, and Washington quickly bounced back from last week's 20-19 home loss to California in its Pac-12 opener. "It always feels good to be in the end zone quick," Eason said. "Last week we struggled with some things and this week we got to jump on it early. That just shows how well we can bounce back and respond to adversity." While the final numbers look impressive, Washington did what was expected. Other than showing it could respond to last week's setback, answers about how good the Huskies are will come the next three weeks with games at BYU, vs. USC and at Stanford. - Washington/AP College Football

  09/07/19 - Michael Penix Jr.rSr/2024, Washington, 6-2, 216 (DS#5 QB) + More +

Backup quarterback Peyton Ramsey was 13 of 14 for 226 yards and two touchdowns as Indiana shut out Eastern Illinois 52-0 on Saturday. All it took was one quarter for the Hoosiers (2-0) to put it away. They dominated on defense and took an early lead with touchdowns on their first three possessions. Michael Penix Jr., Indiana's starter at quarterback, was 14 of 20 with 197 yards and two touchdowns before taking a seat late in the second quarter. "This was a great game, just watching the offense execute," Penix said. "We don't take anyone lightly. We're always coming out pushing extremely hard." Penix first connected with Miles Marshall on a 10-yard touchdown pass on Indiana's opening drive. Stevie Scott III scored on a 5-yard run and Cole Gest from three yards out to put the Hoosiers ahead 21-0 with 1:34 to go in the first quarter. The Panthers (0-2) didn't have any answers. - AP College Football

  08/31/19 - *Jacob EasonrJr/2020, Washington, 6-6, 231 (DS#5 QB) + More +

Of all the throws Washington's Jacob Eason made playing his first game in nearly two years, the most impressive was one which hit the ground. It was a heave that traveled 60-plus yards in the air and while it was an incompletion, it showed off the big arm Eason brought back from Georgia and left the home crowd buzzing. "I swear to you it came from heaven," said Aaron Fuller, the intended receiver on the play. "All I saw was it went into the clouds and then it came down and I was just like "wow." Eason had more than a few wow moments on Saturday, throwing for 349 yards and four touchdowns, and No. 13 Washington opened the season with a 47-14 win over Eastern Washington.

Taking his first snaps since the 2017 season when he lost the starting job at Georgia to Jake Fromm, Eason showed no rust, carving up one of the top FCS programs in the country with a debut that will only increase the hype around the former No. 1 recruit in the country. "I was eager to see what he would do because I haven't seen him play and been in games, and things like that," Fuller said. "There was maybe a small bit of doubt just to see how he would control the offense and things like that but I never doubted his arm or his upside. It was cool to see." Eason completed 27 of 36 passes and led Washington (1-0) on touchdown drives on four of its first five possessions. "It was fun to do and fun to be a part of and super exciting for me," Eason said. - AP College Football

  08/31/19 - Michael Penix Jr.rSr/2024, Washington, 6-2, 216 (DS#5 QB) + More +

Indiana quarterback Michael Penix Jr. demonstrated his playmaking potential Saturday. He started fast. He ran well. And he found a way to close out a 34-24 victory over Ball State. Even Penix knows, though, there's plenty of room for improvement following an up-and-down starting debut. "He missed some reads, but that didn't surprise me," Indiana coach Tom Allen said. "You're going to have some growing pains and they did a good job disguising things. But he was able to make something out of nothing sometimes." It's one reason Allen named Penix the starter over Peyton Ramsey. Yes, Penix put up solid numbers Saturday.

After going 8 of 11 with 144 yards, one touchdown and one interception in the first quarter, he finished 26 of 40 with 326 yards, one TD and two interceptions and seven carries for 67 yards. He became the fourth freshman in school history to throw for 300 yards in a game and produced the school's second-highest passing total in his first start - trailing only Antwaan Randle El (385) in 1998. - AP College Football

  08/28/19 - Trey AdamsrSr/2020, Washington, 6-8, 318 (DS#20 OT) + More +

If not for injuries, Washington left tackle Trey Adams would probably already have been in the NFL. Setbacks cost the big left tackle most of two seasons, however, and now he's preparing to start his final year with the 13-ranked Huskies when they open against FCS powerhouse Eastern Washington on Saturday. "Things happen and I'm happy I'm here," Adams said. "Couldn't be happier with the decision I made. That's not really what I want to think about right now." Adams is part of an offensive line that should be an area of strength for the Huskies with a group of five linemen that all have significant starting experience, although not always at the position they will play this season.

Adams, left guard Luke Wattenberg, center Nick Harris, right guard Jaxson Kirkland and right tackle Jared Hilbers make up the group that should help the adjustment for new starting quarterback Jacob Eason and the Huskies' pack of running backs taking over for Myles Gaskin. "Anytime you've got veteran lines it's going to help either side of the ball. That's where it always starts," coach Chris Petersen said. "So certainly it helps for sure." Two years ago, Adams was a preseason All-American who seemed headed toward an early entry into the NFL draft, where he was likely going to be a first-round pick. - AP College Football

  08/23/19 - *Jacob EasonrJr/2020, Washington, 6-6, 231 (DS#5 QB) + More +

No. 13 Washington has named Georgia transfer Jacob Eason its starting quarterback for the season opener against Eastern Washington. Eason was expected to land the starting job after transferring to the Huskies but was in an extended competition with sophomore Jake Haener throughout spring practice and into fall camp. Coach Chris Petersen said Haener will also play in the opener.

Eason started as a freshman at Georgia, playing in 13 games and throwing for 2,430 yards and 16 touchdowns in 2016. He was injured in the first quarter of the season opener the following year and never regained the starting job after Jake Fromm took over and led the Bulldogs to the national championship game. Eason transferred and sat out last season under NCAA transfer rules. Eason's first start at Washington will be his first game action since Oct. 7, 2017, against Vanderbilt. - AP College Football
