He won the UW's Husky Excellence Award at the team's postseason banquet, and have been named second-team preseason All-Pac-12 by several different outlets this summer. In 2013, Austin Seferian-Jenkins became the first Husky to win the John Mackey Award. Last year, Husky Hunter Bryant was one of three finalists for the trophy. - Washington Football

  2020 PRESEASON DOAK WALKER AWARD WATCH LIST: Richard Newton (So.), Washington,...Newton, a sophomore from Lancaster, Calif., is one of several returning Huskies vying for the starting tailback spot this coming season. Last year, he distinguished himself by scoring 10 rushing touchdowns, the fifth-highest total in the Pac-12 Conference, despite not starting any games. For the year, he rushed for 498 yards on 117 carries, and also caught a touchdown pass. His 6.6 points per game were 10th in the conference, sixth among non-kickers. - Washington Football

  Indiana football coach Tom Allen isn't shying away from expectations. The Hoosiers return 17 starters from a team that finished 8-5, their best season since 1993, and have assembled a talented roster with three straight top-50 national recruiting classes. "There's no question we have a lot of players back on this football team from last year that have played football at a high level," Allen said. Managing those expectations will be one of the keys to IU's success going into this season. The Hoosiers only got in four spring practices due to the coronavirus pandemic, and the talent on the roster remains young and in need of reps.

But IU has plenty to build around, led by rising sophomore cornerback Tiawan Mullen on defense and preseason All-Big Ten senior wide receiver Whop Philyor on offense. Redshirt sophomore quarterback Michael Penix Jr. needs to prove he can stay healthy for a full season and has added 15 pounds of muscle during the offseason in an attempt to better take the pounding applied by Big Ten defenses. Penix can stretch a defense - he connected with Nick Westbrook on a 75-yard touchdown pass in last season's opener against Ball State - and finished the year passing for 1,394 yards and 10 TDs in six games. - Herald Bulletin

  The top of the quarterback depth chart for Colorado State will almost definitely look the same this year as it did during the majority of 2019 as Patrick O'Brien returns to lead the Rams after starting the team's final nine games. He completed 62 percent of his passes for 2,803 yards, 13 touchdowns and seven interceptions a year ago. Though spring camp was cut short due to the coronavirus pandemic, new head coach Steve Addazio sounded pleased last winter with the redshirt senior's efforts to digest the new regime's basic philosophies. "Pat has grown every day since we've been here, grown with his intensity and everything about him," Addazio said. "I've been very pleased."

O'Brien's chemistry with the Rams' receivers should help. "I've played with Warren (Jackson), I've played with Nate (Craig-Myers), I've played with E.J. (Scott), I've played with Dante (Wright)," O'Brien said in May. "We already understand each other. I think after a couple weeks of practice, (chemistry) won't be too big of an issue because we all understand how we work amongst each other." Still, O'Brien has a lot to work on to become a reliable, consistent asset. His lack of pocket awareness was a problem at times. - Denver Post

  Kevin Thomson had other opportunities. According to Taylor Barton - a UW quarterback in 2001 and 2002 who since founded the Alliance QB Academy and has worked with Thomson for nearly 10 years - the former Sacramento State QB had an offer from a Power Five program "where day one walking in he was taking reps with the ones." Instead, Thomson - an Auburn native and Riverside High alum - announced a graduate transfer to Washington on Wednesday. And don't get it twisted: an opportunity is all this is. "It was, 'You're going to have an equal opportunity to compete for the starting job,' " Barton said of UW's pitch. "I love the fact that coach (Jimmy) Lake and his staff didn't guarantee a job. That would not be fair to the guys there. That would be a bad look. But for Kevin, it tells you how much he wants to play for UW. Here's a kid that grew up in the state, watched them growing up and now has an opportunity. He proved he can be a big-time player at a Division I level like the FCS and the Big Sky. But obviously he wants to prove he can do it at the FBS level.

"So the chance to do those two things - play for the hometown school at the highest level, and have a really legitimate chance to compete for the starting job - I just think that was too good for him to pass up. I think he could have taken an easier route, but he didn't. That should make Husky fans very excited, that you have a guy that's willing to come in and pass up other opportunities to take this because he wants it that much and he believes in himself that much." - Seattle Times

  The Huskies bolstered their quarterback room Wednesday with the addition of Kevin Thomson, a graduate transfer from Sacramento State and the Big Sky Offensive Player of the Year in 2019. Thomson joins a position group that includes sophomore Jacob Sirmon, redshirt freshman Dylan Morris and recruit Ethan Garbers. The Huskies now have more QB options, but no more QB clarity. One is a graduate transfer, and three have either zero or limited college experience. Plus, the offensive coordinator (John Donovan) is new. And so is the head coach (Jimmy Lake). Anytime a touted Big Sky quarterback joins the Pac-12, a hopeful comparison to Vernon Adams - the former Eastern Washington star who led Oregon to nine wins - is sure to follow.

But there are just as many, if not more instances of Big Sky quarterbacks not making a positive contribution in the Pac-12 and turning into Dakota Prukop, the lauded Montana State transfer who didn't win the starting job in Eugene the year after Adams flourished. We don't know if Thomson will be Adams or Prukop or someone in between. But at first glance, his accuracy should be a point of concern for UW. In three seasons with Sac State, against Big Sky competition, Thomson never completed more than 59 percent of his passes, and his career percentage was just 57.3. - Oakland Tribune

  Washington may have found its quarterback for the upcoming season after Kevin Thomson, the 2019 Big Sky Conference offensive player of the year, joined the Huskies as a graduate transfer. Washington announced Thomson's signing to a financial aid agreement Wednesday. Thomson was a third-team AP All-American at the FCS level last season, when he led Sacramento State to the second round of the FCS playoffs. Thomson finished tied for third in voting for the Walter Payton Award as the top offensive player in the country at the FCS level. Thomson threw for 3,216 yards and 27 touchdowns, and added another 619 yards rushing and 12 TDs last season. He is a 2014 graduate of Auburn Riverside High School outside of Seattle and started his career at UNLV before transferring to Sacramento State. - AP College Football

  Patrick O'Brien spent two months of quarantine releasing his inner Gardner Minshew. All over his upper lip. "It just kind of turned into a 'can-I-actually-do-it' kind of thing," Colorado State's senior quarterback said with a grin as he greeted reporters on a media video conference call Wednesday sporting a new mustache. "And then I realized quickly that I can do it. "I'm proud of myself that I'm actually able to grow some facial hair….Had to do something to spice up life."

When not styling his new look, the Rams signal-caller has been throwing and lifting weights near his home in San Juan Capistrano, Calif., south of Los Angeles. He basically got stuck at home during spring break after the spread of the coronavirus cut off interstate travel. He is itching to return to Fort Collins. "I've been in California too long," said O'Brien, the Nebraska Cornhuskers transfer who finished third in the Mountain West Conference last fall in passing efficiency (140.0), fourth in passing yards (2,803) and first in yards per pass attempt (8.3). "I'm ready to come back and play football and see the guys." - Denver Post

  The University of Washington is still trying to make its fall football game against Michigan happen. On Friday, Washington athletic director Jennifer Cohen told The Seattle Times that she's "working towards a plan" to still play the game, scheduled for Sept. 5 at Husky Stadium in Seattle, Wash. The game is the first of a two-game series agreed to in 2014, one that includes a 2021 matchup in Ann Arbor. In both cases, the traveling team stands to receive a $1 million guarantee. "I was actually just sending messages to Warde (Manuel), their athletic director, this morning," Cohen said in a story published on Monday. "They're of that same time frame and plan, too. So I think the question to me is as much, 'What will it look like in the venue?' as it is whether or not we're going to play it."

Cohen's comments come as the college football world awaits plans from their respective universities this fall. The common belief is that football, and other fall sports, cannot happen without on-campus instruction and other students present. While the University of Michigan has said it plans to have a on-site, "public health-informed" fall semester, Washington has not committed to such a plan yet. And according to Gov. Jay Inslee's plan to reopen the state, large gatherings and sporting events may be limited until July. - Ann Arbor News

  Washington's football program just won a national championship. Of sorts. On Tuesday, the NCAA announced that the Huskies recorded an Academic Progress Rate (APR) score of 999 out of 1,000 - the top mark of all Division I FBS football programs. For that matter, it's also the highest four-year score ever by an FBS football program. Washington's score was one point higher than Wisconsin, which posted a 998 in 2013-14. The Huskies also topped the Pac-12 Conference for the third consecutive year.

"I could not be more proud of our football program for today's NCAA Academic Progress Report release," UW athletics director Jen Cohen said in a statement. "To post the highest-ever recorded four-year mark among FBS programs speaks volumes about our students, football coaches and staff's commitment to continued excellence in the classroom at the University of Washington. I'd especially like to acknowledge Kim Durand [senior associate athletic director for student development] and her team for their tireless work to support our students' academic endeavors." - Seattle Times

  As far as football media days this summer go, the Pac-12 is falling in line with its FBS brethren. A league spokesman confirmed to The Salt Lake Tribune late Thursday evening that the Pac-12 will not hold its football media day as planned on July 29 at the Hollywood & Highland Entertainment Center. Instead, the league will hold virtual media days. Of the 10 FBS conferences, seven have said they will go to a virtual format. Of those seven, the Pac-12 and Big 12 are the only Power Five conferences to announce their plans. The Big 12 said on Wednesday it will bail on in-person media days July 20-21 at AT&T Stadium, home of the Dallas Cowboys.

The SEC (July 13-16, Atlanta), ACC (July 22-23, Charlotte) and Big Ten (July 22-23, Chicago) are the remaining FBS outliers. An exact format is still being worked out by the Pac-12, as is a date or dates for the event. On Thursday, the league announced a series of 30-minute, media-only webinars next week involving the league's 12 football coaches. Each day from Monday through Thursday, three coaches will participate with a different topic slated for each session. - Salt Lake Tribune

  Washington football fans will get to see former Husky quarterback Jacob Eason during this month's NFL Draft. The only question is, when? The 6-foot-6, 227-pound signal caller from Lake Stevens is one of 58 players - and the lone Husky - who will participate virtually in the 2020 NFL Draft, the league announced on Thursday. In his lone season as UW's starter, Eason - a former five-star recruit and Georgia transfer - completed 64% of his passes, throwing for 3,132 yards with 23 touchdowns and eight interceptions. Husky football fans now know they'll get some added access to Eason when he's selected during the NFL Draft's broadcast. It's yet to be determined, though, whether that will happen on Thursday or Friday. - Seattle Times

  After tearing his ACL during his true-freshman season, Penix was named Indiana's starter heading into 2019. But after just six starts in which he displayed tantalizing arm talent, Penix suffered a season-ending injury to his right sternoclavicular joint leading to yet another offseason of recovery. But what his quarterback coaches in Florida saw in a high school version of Penix continues to be his driving force to return from more adversity. "He knows what he wants," C.J. Bennett said. "And he's definitely hungry for some more success." The Stable QB Academy helps train high school recruits to specialize in specific skills needed for the next level. The Bennetts start their search for talent in the Tampa area as young as fifth grade, and The Stable remains a place for college quarterbacks to improve in the offseason.

"Our main job is to prepare them and put them in as many game-like situations, game-like drills," C.J. Bennett said. "Whether it's off-balance stuff, being on time, being comfortable in the pocket, uncomfortable scenarios, our goal is to make the drills and everything we do as game-like as possible. "So when the bullets are flying on Saturdays and things are going crazy, (Penix) has the mechanics and that foundation to always look back on." Penix's work has shown in various aspects, whether that be through his ball flight or just by the eye test. Penix is stronger and making strides toward not just being Indiana's top option at quarterback, but also the team's most consistent option. "Mike Penix has a rocket for an arm," Indiana cornerback Tiawan Mullen said. "Mike is a great leader, he's a great quarterback. He throws much stronger having gained 15, 20 pounds over the spring. So, Mike can do it all. I feel like he is going to take us far this season." - Indianapolis Star/News
