CAA Football announced today that the Conference's Board of Directors has voted to suspend conference competition in the Fall of 2020 due to continuing concerns associated with the COVID-19 pandemic. The conference expressed a strong commitment to exploring the possibility of conducting a football season during the Spring of 2021, and will continue to analyze this scenario as more information becomes available and conditions continue to evolve.

In expressing an understanding of the uniqueness of the Conference's composition (12 institutions that compete in other sports in four Division I Conferences), the geographical expansion of the Conference membership and the complexity of an ever-changing situation, the Conference's Board of Directors also affirmed that the Conference's policies would permit member institutions the ability to explore the option of pursuing playing an independent football schedule in the Fall of 2020. - Colonial Athletic Association Football

The Maxwell Football Club announced its watch list for the Chuck Bednarik Award, which is given annually to the best defensive player in college football. Two Wahoos made the watch list, and they'll look to become the first UVa winner of the award since its inception in 1995. Both of UVa's players are on the watch list come from the linebacker position. Senior Charles Snowden and junior Noah Taylor made the list. In total, 18 ACC players earned spots on the watch list, including six linebackers from the conference. There are 90 players on the list and 20% of them come from the ACC. That's the most of any conference.

Interestingly, Virginia is the only program in the nation to put two linebackers on the list. Snowden finished last season with 72 tackles, 11 tackles for loss and five sacks. Taylor racked up 57 tackles, including an impressive 13.5 tackles for loss and seven sacks. Both players use elite length to disrupt plays. They combined to break up eight passes a season ago, and Taylor finished the year with two interceptions. - Charlottesville Daily Progress

Voluntary workouts for returning University of Virginia football players will begin July 5, the school's athletic department announced Friday. Required activity will begin July 15 and allow players to work for no more than eight hours, including weight training, conditioning and film review. That will increase to 20 hours from July 26-Aug. 8, with fall camp to start one day later. There will be an acclimatization period before a 25-day fall practice period gets under way. Virginia's season begins Sept. 7 against Georgia in Atlanta.

"Protocols and plans for student-athletes' return have been coordinated through the UVa Health System, which has collaborated with officials at the local, state and national levels," the UVa news release stated. Athletes and staff will receive COVID-19 education and will undergo COVID-19 testing, with positive results to be reported to the Virginia Department of Health and all testing results reported to UVa team physicians. - Roanoke Times

Standing 6-feet-7-inches tall and weighing 235 pounds, Snowden possesses a blend of speed, size and length that makes NFL scouts drool. He finished the 2019 season with 72 tackles, including 11 tackles for loss and five sacks. Long arms aren't just good for tackling - he's broken up 15 passes in the past two seasons. A menace in passing lanes and a disruptor in the backfield, Snowden has started in all 27 of Virginia's games in the past two seasons. Athlon Sports named him a preseason second team All-ACC player entering the 2020 season. He's a star on the gridiron. "Talking to an NFL scout last week, I told him I don't know if I've been around a player that has as much energy as Charles," co-defensive coordinator Kelly Poppinga said in late May. "Every single day Charles shows up, pumping the arms up, hyped up. It doesn't matter if it's a run, if it's a lift, if it's a practice. Charles is always bringing that energy and trying to be contagious with it."

Snowden brings the on-field energy in bunches. Given his commitment on the field and his engagment off it, Snowden earns the respect of his peers. When the massive linebacker speaks, players listen. "You walk into a room and that guy, man, he fills up the room," Poppinga said. "His personality, his character, the presence that he has, the way that he talks - he kind of has this booming voice - kind of carries through the room, so people listen to him when he talks." - Charlottesville Daily Progress

According to NCAA Bylaw 20.9.9.1, a school must sponsor at least 16 sports and six of those sports must be a men's sports to remain compliant for the FBS, the NCAA's top rung of football. After cutting men's track and field in May, the school submitted a waiver to the NCAA to allow the school to remain compliant to the body's requirements of six men's sports. CMU was down to five men's sports when it cut men's track and field. CMU Athletic Director Michael Alford said in a statement the waiver has been granted for the 2020-21 and the 2021-22 academic years. CMU must add another men's sport by 2022 to remain FBS compliant. - Morning Sun

  05/30/20 - Keytaon ThompsonrSr/2023, Virginia, 6-4, 218 (DS#47 WR) + More +

Until it was reported that Virginia had taken a spring commitment from a transfer quarterback, it had been a well-kept secret by UVa quarterbacks coach Jason Beck. Beck clearly was involved in the recruitment of Keytaon Thompson, a former Mississippi State quarterback who was the 2016 Gatorade state player of the year in Louisiana. "We knew we needed another guy in the [quarterback] room for competition, for depth and for the stability of the program," said Beck, whose good fortune it was to have record-setting Bryce Perkins taking snaps for the past two seasons. The heir apparent, for now, is left-hander Brennan Armstrong, the back-up in 2019, who has three more seasons of eligibility.

Thompson has attempted 105 passes in his college career, including 66 as a freshman at Mississippi State in 2017. Armstrong has 25 career attempts and Stone has five. "He'll [Thompson] be a great fit and give us great competition between him and Brennan," Beck said. "We're pretty excited about Brennan. Lindell is a perfect option for us as well because he knows the offense. He doesn't have to take many reps. "He doesn't quite have the skills we want in that 'thorterback.'?" That's a term used by UVa head coach Bronco Mendenhall and staff when dual threat Taysom Hill played quarterback for them at Brigham Young. - Roanoke Times

  05/30/20 - Darrius BrattonrSr/2023, Virginia, 6-0, 183 (DS#110 CB) + More +

Even before All-ACC cornerback Bryce Hall suffered a season-ending ankle injury in October, Virginia's football staff knew that it would need a successor in 2020. Although the Cavaliers would win five games without Hall, a protege was waiting in the wings. Hall, known for studying film and analyzing statistics, didn't hesitate to train Darrius Bratton in his craft. "I picked up a lot from Bryce in terms of how to organize and plan and prepare," said Bratton, a graduate of William Fleming High School. "With him, it's all about 'prepare, prepare, prepare.' Bryce took me under his wing."

Bratton was in a position to start for the Cavaliers, or at least be a regular in UVa's five-man nickel packages, when he suffered a torn ACL on the first day of fall practice. That prevented him from playing in the regular season and he would not have gone through spring practice before the coronavirus pandemic made that a moot point. Bratton has been in Roanoke during the spring, working out at gyms he knew from earlier times and running the hills near his home. "This [past] season was very hard for me mentally and physically," he said. "Not going into battle with my teammates was the hardest challenge I had to overcome." - Roanoke Times

The Mid-American Conference athletic landscape has changed significantly in recent weeks as a direct result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Most recently, on May 15, the MAC announced it was implementing a cost-cutting plan for football heading into the 2020 season. As it stands the travel rosters for conference games will drop from 76 to 70 this fall and host teams will no longer be staying in hotels on the nights before games. These cost-cutting measures will save the conference a significant amount of money this fall. Players will now stay in their apartments or dorm rooms the night before game day. On May 12 the MAC announced it was eliminating eight conference tournaments and modifying the format to seven other conference tournaments. At Central Michigan University the athletic program has also cut pay to numerous coaches and administrators as a byproduct of the COVID-19 pandemic. - Morning Sun

  05/12/20 - RaShaun HenryrSr/2022, Virginia, 6-2, 185 (DS#77 WR) + More +

The Virginia football program has added graduate transfer Ra'Shaun Henry to its roster, the program announced Tuesday. Henry comes to Charlottesville after spending four seasons at the FCS level with St. Francis in Pennsylvania. The 6-foot-3, 195-pound wide receiver will have one year of eligibility remaining and can play immediately. Henry broke onto the scene in 2019 as a redshirt junior, tallying 90 receptions for 1,118 yards and nine touchdowns. He recorded 53 of those receptions in the team's final five games. Henry finished fifth among all FCS wide receivers in receptions last season.

St. Francis finished the 2019 season with a 6-6 record, ending the year with a 3-4 mark in Northeast Conference. The talent difference between FCS schools and Power 5 schools is noticeable, and the gap between the NEC and the ACC is big. Against one of the better FCS defenses last season in James Madison, Henry recorded five receptions for 60 yards. St. Francis as a team only completed 11 passes for 96 yards in the game, meaning Henry accounted for 62.5% of the team's receiving yards in the 44-7 loss. The Red Flash didn't face an FBS team in 2019. - Charlottesville Daily Progress
