  Charles Snowden, a lightly recruited prospect who turned into an impact player at Virginia, has elected to pass up his final season of eligibility and make himself available for the 2021 NFL Draft. Snowden suffered a broken ankle against Abilene Christian in UVa's eighth game of the season and was unable to play in the Cavaliers' final two games. "To coach [Bronco] Mendenhall and his coaching staff, thank you for giving me an opportunity," Snowden, one of the team captains, said on Twitter. "They took a chance on me, a basketball player with zero football offers and pushed me well beyond what I was capable of." Charles Snowden's father, Chuck, confirmed that his son completed his graduation requirements in 3 1/2 semesters, including summer work. Although Charles Snowden had played in four seasons, the NCAA has granted all fall sports athletes an extra year of eligibility because of the coronavirus pandemic, no matter how much or how little they play this school year. - Roanoke Times

  Oklahoma State will be down one tight end for the Cheez-It Bowl. Redshirt junior Jelani Woods has entered the transfer portal, as first reported by GoPokes.com. The 6-foot-7, 275-pound Woods had 361 receiving yards and four touchdowns on 31 receptions over three seasons since converting from quarterback. Woods is the second scholarship player to enter the portal since the end of the regular season, along with reserve offensive lineman Trent Pullen. - Daily Oklahoman

  Virginia's Fralin Family Head Football Coach Bronco Mendenhall announced today (Dec. 21) that nine fourth-and fifth-year Cavaliers will return to the roster for the 2021 season. The group of players includes - DE Mandy Alonso, DE Adeeb Atariwa, FS Joey Blount, OLB Elliott Brown, CB De'Vante Cross, OG Chris Glaser, CB Nick Grant, WR Ra'Shaun Henry and OT Ryan Nelson. Eight of the nine players have already completed their undergraduate degrees. By the end of spring semester, all nine will have earned their undergraduate degrees.

Blount (Atlanta, Ga.) started all five games he appeared in during the 2020 season. Battling an injury that forced him to miss five games, Blount finished with 25 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, 1.0 sack, one interception and two pass breakups. A 2020 Campbell Trophy semifinalist, Blount has appeared in 43 career games with 219 career tackles, 14.5 tackles for loss and six interceptions. Blount graduated last summer (three years) with a degree in inter-American studies. He is working on a master's degree in education. - Virginia Football

  University of Virginia senior linebacker Charles Snowden has decided to forgo his last season of eligibility and declare for the 2021 NFL Draft. The Silver Spring, Maryland native made the announcement via Twitter on Sunday afternoon. Snowden played in five games this season, tallying 30 tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss, 1 sack and 3 pass break ups. His season ended after breaking his ankle during the Abilene Christian game. During his career, Snowden exhibited unrivaled leadership ability which led to him being named a captain and top defensive player for the Cavaliers. He ends his college career having played in 42 games with 10 sacks and 2 sacks. - WSLS TV 10 News

  Blount, who returned from injury Saturday against Boston College, is expected to suit up again this weekend. He says he rushed back from a leg injury earlier this season. After playing against Wake Forest, Blount didn't take the field until Saturday's win over Boston College. He feels healthy now and ready to finish the season.   The 2020 football season was never going to be normal, so if NIU was ever going to go winless, the Huskies sure picked the right season in which to do it. Not that an 0-6 season is in the books, as the Huskies still have a game against a 1-4 Eastern Michigan team on the road next week. Of course, that's the same Eagles team that just handed Western Michigan its first loss of the year. But the Huskies have shown flashes all year. On Saturday in a 41-24 loss to Toledo, Harrison Waylee was the latest to show a positive glimpse into the future. The true freshman ran for 114 yards and found the end zone for the first time in his collegiate career. NIU coach Thomas Hammock said he saw a big game from Waylee coming.

"I told the offensive staff, this guy is about to take off," Hammock said. "I saw it in practice, and I said there's normally a moment you see with a back where it clicks for him. And I think it clicked for him. He's going to be a special player. It's hard to describe...He's going to be a problem in this conference." Waylee said he was aiming for a big contest throughout practice. "The week of practice, all I was thinking was I've got to get better," Waylee said. "I've got to improve on top of that. I practiced really well. I gave a lot during practice and just had to make it show on the field." - DeKalb Daily Chronicle

  UVa linebacker Charles Snowden served as a leader all season. The NFL prospect was arguably the Cavaliers' best defensive player when he suffered a season-ending injury against Abilene Christian. While Snowden couldn't take the field for Senior Day, that didn't stop the Wahoos from honoring their captain. Simpson decided to wear No. 11 on Saturday to honor the injured linebacker and delivered a dazzling 73-yard kickoff return while wearing the number. "I asked Charles if I could play for him, and he said he loved the idea and then I asked Coach Mendenhall and he approved of it, so I'm thankful for both of them," Simpson said.

After the victory, Snowden broke the rock to celebrate the win. "I didn't know how to pay tribute to him and thank him any more than allowing him to do that in front of his peers," Mendenhall said. Mendenhall acknowledged Armstrong's elite performance at quarterback, but he felt the need to give Snowden the chance to break the rock after the team's Senior Day win. "I can't thank Charles enough for his leadership, for his example, for his trust in us, and it just seemed appropriate to give him, as a defensive captain, the last chance in this stadium to do that in front of his peers," Mendenhall said. - Charlottesville Daily Progress

  Charles Snowden, who suffered a season-ending ankle injury against Abilene Christian, was named a 2020 Butkus Award semifinalist. The award goes to the best linebacker in college football, and Snowden is one of 16 semifinalists. Before suffering his injury, Snowden tallied 44 tackles, including 10 tackles for loss and six sacks. After a slow start to the season, he caught fire in October. Snowden posted a four-sack game against North Carolina in one of the better individual showings of any linebacker this fall. The talented linebacker isn't sure if he'll declare for the NFL Draft in the spring or take advantage of the extra year of eligibility granted by the NCAA to return for one final season with the Cavaliers. - Charlottesville Daily Progress

  Virginia linebacker Charles Snowden will miss the rest of the season with a broken right ankle. Snowden's father shared the news on social media Saturday night, and UVa head coach Bronco Mendenhall shared Monday that Snowden underwent surgery on the injury, knocking him out for the year. The recovery is expected to take about six months. Snowden could return next season for a final year with the Wahoos due to NCAA eligibility relief, but he may instead decide to turn pro and prepare for an NFL career. He'll make that decision in coming weeks and months. "Charles' influence on our program has been breathtaking in terms of maturity and growth, and in a lot of ways his own maturity and growth has matched that of the program," Mendenhall said. "He came in as tall and thin and a basketball player, and he's blossomed into a future NFL player with amazing leadership skills and a captain of our team in a four-year period."

Snowden suffered the injury of the first quarter of Saturday's victory over Abilene Christian. He missed the rest of the game, returning to the sideline for the second half wearing a cast and using crutches. His loss removes an on-field leader and NFL-caliber linebacker. Prior to the Abilene Christian contest, Snowden recorded an impressive 21 tackles, nine tackles for loss and six sacks in Virginia's previous three games. "Charles, obviously, he's our leader," senior cornerback Nick Grant said. "He's connected with everybody on the team.   D'Angelo Amos, Charles Snowden and Nusi Malani all left the win with injuries. Snowden's looked the most serious, as he appeared to injure his right ankle in the first quarter. He came onto the field in the second half, sitting on the sideline with crutches and what appeared to be a cast on his right lower leg. Defensive lineman Jowon Briggs entered the transfer portal earlier this week, leaving the defensive line especially thin with Richard Burney out for the season with health issues. Malani adds important depth along the line when healthy. Safeties Joey Blount and Brenton Nelson both missed Saturday's win as they attempt to recover from injuries plaguing them for most of the fall season. Amos fills in well for Blount, and he's a valued defensive back contributor. "It's the highest level of concern," Mendenhall said. "We're thin already, and that added to it.   In addition to Briggs' departure, offensive lineman Dillon Reinkensmeyer suffered a (knee) injury against Louisville. Mendenhall shared Tuesday night on his radio show that Reinkensmeyer will miss the rest of the season. Mendenhall called it a "challenge" to see Reinkensmeyer lying on the field after suffering the injury against the Cardinals. It's a big loss for the Cavaliers. Reinkensmeyer was among the team's most experienced players. The senior started double-digit games in 2017, 2018 and 2019. He was one of the more reliable offensive linemen on this year's squad. Offensive coordinator Robert Anae said Joe Bissinger, a redshirt sophomore from Texas, is expected to slide into the starting left guard spot. He'll be flanked by Ryan Nelson at left tackle and Olusegun Oluwatimi at center. - Charlottesville Daily Progress
