  On Thursday, the redshirt sophomore was named Virginia's starting quarterback for the start of the 2020 season after competing for the job with Mississippi State graduate transfer Keytaon Thompson. Just one day after winning the starting QB job, Armstrong was named a team captain. Following Friday evening's practice, Virginia coach Bronco Mendenhall announced that Armstrong, senior defensive end Richard Burney, senior wide receiver Terrell Jana and senior linebacker Charles Snowden had been elected team captains by their peers. There are high expectations for Snowden, who has been named to the preseason watch lists for the Bednarik, Nagurski and Butkus awards. Snowden was an honorable mention All-ACC honoree last season after finishing with 72 tackles, 11 tackles for loss, five sacks, four pass breakups and one fumble recovery. He will lead a deep linebacking corps that is expected to be the strength of the Virginia defense. - Charlottesville Daily Progress

  Mendenhall recently announced that Dontayvion Wicks is out for the season with an injury. That leaves the Cavaliers in need of playmakers alongside senior wide receiver Terrell Jana. "The rest of the receiver position is performing really well," Mendenhall said. "We're just more thin than we have been, but Ra'Shaun Henry has been a really bright spot for us, so that's been a real positive." Henry, a transfer from St. Francis, grabbed 90 receptions a season ago at the FCS level. He's an athletic receiver with good speed and size - he's listed at 6-foot-3. He possesses the physical ability to earn playing time as an outside receiver.

Wide receivers coach Marques Hagans expects Henry to play, and he wouldn't be surprised to see Henry line up all over the field. "We'll definitely have him on the field," Hagans said. "When we break the huddle, the intent is to line him up at receiver and put him in as many different places as we can." Part of Henry's decision to come to UVa stemmed from wanting to prove he belongs at the Power 5 level. Given the lack of depth at receiver and Henry's talent, he's going to have a chance to prove he's a top-tier ACC talent. - Charlottesville Daily Progress

  2021 SENIOR BOWL WATCH LIST: Charles Snowden, Virginia,...Snowden was an honorable mention All-ACC honoree in 2019 after finishing with 72 tackles, 11 tackles for loss, 5.0 sacks, four pass breakups and one fumble recovery. He was named the Walter Camp National Defensive Player of the Year after leading all players with 15 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss and 2.0 sacks in a win over Old Dominion in 2019.   2021 SENIOR BOWL WATCH LIST: Shane Simpson, Virginia,...Simpson appeared in 35 career games for Towson over the 2015-19 seasons. He missed most of the 2015 and 2019 seasons with injuries and was granted a sixth year of eligibility by the NCAA for the 2020 campaign. Simpson was named a first-team FCS All-American in 2018 by the Associated Press, American Football Coaches Association and Hero Sports after finishing second in all of FCS with 171.5 all-purpose yards per game. He was named the 2108 CAA Special Teams Player of the Year and was a three-time all-conference selection in 2018 (first-team at running back, second-team at kick returner and third-team at punt returner). - Virginia Football

He earned second-team All-MAC honors in 2019 after catching 33 passes for 496 yards and four touchdowns for the Chippewas.   Simpson is entering his sixth season of college football after twice suffering season-ending knee injuries. He had more than 2,000 all-purpose yards in 2018, his last full season for Towson. "I would say that [Simpson is] a very seasoned player," Taulapapa said. "When you see him run the ball, when you see him go out for passes, when you see him block, … you can see he's been playing football for a long time. He's very educated on what's what." Delaware head coach Danny Rocco, formerly a Virginia assistant, has some good news for his former employers. "Hope he's back to healthy," Rocco commented. "He was a handful in this league."

That was the Colonial Athletic Association, which elected not to play football this fall in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic. "Me picking UVa [at midweek] and then coming down here that Saturday, everything was real rapid with the paperwork and everything," said Simpson in an interview made available to media Monday. "Since I got here, they've treated me like family and I can't thank coach Mendenhall and his staff and my new brothers enough." Simpson was a high school standout in Easton, Pennsylvania, around the same time that current UVa defensive back DeVante Cross played at Parkland High School in nearby Allentown. "That's been my brother since 10th grade in high school," Simpson said. "It definitely was a smooth transition for me." - Roanoke Times

  Charles Snowden, Noah Taylor and Zane Zandier may all land on NFL rosters in the next year or two. Rob Snyder returns from injury, and Nick Jackson is a budding star at the position. The position group is stacked, and it's also filled with leaders. No Cavalier leads more than Snowden. "You really want to look up to somebody like that," Taylor said of his teammate, "because there's a lot of guys that will talk a lot of stuff and then they don't go ahead and do it, but Charles will be dead tired and telling other people, 'Let's go' and then go ahead and be the first one on the next rep." A vocal leader, Snowden backs up his words with action. He finished the 2019 season with 72 tackles, including 11 tackles for loss.   A couple hours after adding James Madison graduate transfer Adeeb Atariwa, the Virginia football program added another Duke to its roster on Sunday. D'Angelo Amos, a safety and punt returner, joins the Cavaliers with one year of immediate eligibility. JMU announced Friday that it won't play football this fall due to COVID-19. Amos and Atariwa both have NFL aspirations, and they hope UVa can move forward with its fall schedule as currently scheduled.

Amos excelled as a punt returner at JMU, finishing his career with 1,259 career punt yards. He returned five punts for touchdowns during his career, including three in 2018. He returned two punts for touchdowns in a 2018 victory over Villanova. While Amos drew headlines for his return ability, he developed into a consistent defensive back during his JMU career. He earned All-CAA honors as a safety and punt returner in 2019, helping the Dukes reach the FCS National Championship Game. - Charlottesville Daily Progress

  James Madison redshirt senior safety/punt returner D'Angelo Amos has entered his name into the NCAA transfer portal. Amos made the announcement Wednesday night on Twitter. Amos' decision comes amid uncertainty about the upcoming college football season, especially at the FCS level. James Madison is currently planning to play a fall football schedule but many teams have suspended their seasons. Amos was expected to be one of the Dukes' key players in 2020. He's a two-year starter at safety who has recorded 135 tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss, and two interceptions during his career. Amos has also served as JMU's punt returner where he earned All-American honors. - WHSV TV 3 News

  If not for the CAA ruling, Simpson could have returned to Towson, where he had more than 2,000 all-purpose yards in 2018 and was a consensus FCS All-American. A list of teams said to be interested in Simpson included Texas, Penn State, Florida State, Duke and Wake Forest. Running backs coach Mark Atuaia was UVa's lead recruiter on Simpson, who had Foreman as a consultant. "First off, he's [Simpson] a great kid," Foreman said. "He works his tail off at everything he does. He takes great care of his body and is looking to get better at everything he does. "He had the best spring of his college career last year. He was coming off an All-American season his junior year. He had a tremendous first game; then, we went up to Maine and his ACL popped.

"He's not the biggest guy [at 5 foot 11 and 205 pounds]. He can always get the yards he needs inside the tackles, but he gets in space and he's special. He has tremendous lateral quickness." Simpson will join a UVa offense whose leading rusher last year, Bryce Perkins, was the quarterback. Wayne Taulapapa is the top returning rusher, coming off a 473-yard season. Premium punt returner Joe Reed is headed to the NFL and that is one of Simpson's specialties. "He's dynamic in that aspect of making people miss in small areas and the quickness and the burst to get away from defenders," Foreman said.   Virginia's running back room improved Sunday. Shane Simpson, a versatile running back from Towson, announced that he's heading to UVa as a graduate transfer. Simpson is eligible to play this fall, which will be his final collegiate season. The NFL prospect opted to enter the transfer portal after the Colonial Athletic Association canceled its fall football season due to COVID-19. In the past few days, he's been fielding offers from FBS schools, hoping to make a quick decision ahead of a potential fall season. Simpson, who was an FCS All-American in 2018, played just three games in 2019 before suffering a season-ending knee injury. A fall season could give him the chance to prove his regained health to NFL scouts, while also showcasing his ability at the Power 5 level. When healthy, Simpson dominated the FCS level.
