Redshirt junior wide receiver Xavier Williams is not listed on Alabama football's updated online roster. He also was not included in the media guide, but he participated in the spring and played in the A-Day Game. As of Tuesday, Williams was not listed in the transfer portal. Williams saw action in six games in 2020, four of which came in the last four games of Alabama football's undefeated season. He caught three receptions for 24 yards over the season. One of those came against Ohio State in the national championship game. A native of Hollywood, Florida, Williams was a four-star wide receiver coming out of high school. He redshirted in 2018 before playing in four games in 2019. - Montgomery Advertiser

As far as prestigious individual awards go, speedy kickoff returner Savon Scarver has won nearly every one of them during his record-setting career at Utah State. After all, Scarver was a consensus All-American as a sophomore for the Aggies in 2018, and the only way to accomplish that feat is to be recognized as a first-team All-American by three different official selectors (outlets). Additionally, the Las Vegas native garnered first-team all-Mountain West honors as a sophomore and junior, plus he received the Jet Award in '18, which is given annually to the nation's most outstanding return specialist.

The one major award that has eluded the former high school track & field state champion is Mountain West Special Teams Player of the Year. This is Scarver's final chance for that accolade, but he is the favorite according to members of the media that cover the conference. The senior was selected as the league's preseason Special Teams Player of the Year, it was announced Thursday as part of the Mountain West's annual football media days. The two-day event concluded Thursday at The Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas. - Herald Journal Tribune

When junior quarterback Spencer Petras addressed the media this past spring, he said he didn't care what the fans thought, he's going to get better. "No offense to the fans, but I could (not) care less about what they have to say about our performance," Petras said in April. "I'm focused on improving and having a great spring." Like any young quarterback, he's under a microscope, but this year he has more time to prepare for his second season as the leader of Iowa's offense. "I will say his timing is better, his leadership is better, accuracy is better," junior wide receiver Tyrone Tracy said Tuesday. "Last year he kind of was timid, he really didn't command the field, but I feel like this year, he's definitely gaining the respect of his teammates. He's one of the hardest workers, so I feel like that's another way he's going to gain a lot of respect."

Tracy added Petras has been passing to him three to four times a week during the past three weeks of summer conditioning, and as the new leader of the wide receiving corps has focused his energy on strengthening that chemistry off the field. Part of that, senior wide receiver Nico Ragaini adds, is taking advantage of the communication they didn't have last offseason. "Sometimes routes don't look the way he wants them to look and we talk about it," Ragaini said. "It helps just knowing what each other wants and how to get the ball." - The Gazette

The preseason awards are starting to roll in for the most decorated kickoff returner in Utah State history. Senior Savon Scarver was tabbed a fourth-team preseason All-American by Phil Steele Magazine, in addition to garnering a spot on this same publication's all-Mountain West first team. USU graduate transfer linebacker Justin Rice has also been named to Phil Steele's preseason all-MW first team, plus he secured a spot on Athlon Sport's all-conference second team. - Herald Journal Tribune

A private coach who is working with Spencer Petras over the next week on the East Coast thinks Iowa's presumed starting quarterback is poised to take a big step forward this season for the Hawkeyes. "I see big things coming for him," Tony Racioppi said Thursday. Racioppi is in his eighth year as a quarterback guru at the TEST Football Academy in Martinsville, New Jersey - not far from the campus at Rutgers. A former Division III passing star at Rowan College, Racioppi also is a primary counselor at the famous Manning Passing Academy every summer and said he's had 25 of his quarterbacks sign in the NFL.

One of those quarterbacks is three-year Iowa starter Nate Stanley, who Racioppi worked with ahead of the 2020 NFL Draft. Stanley's connection to Racioppi led to Petras' trip out East. Another half-dozen or so FBS quarterbacks are also being trained by Racioppi this week, as spring practices have wrapped up nationwide. And now hungry signal callers like Petras are soaking up supplemental training. In an interview with the Des Moines Register, Racioppi said he wanted to make clear that Petras' hiring him shouldn't be seen as a knock on the Iowa coaching staff. In fact, Racioppi said he and Iowa quarterbacks coach Ken O'Keefe are in regular contact. Racioppi also coaches a Class of 2023 quarterback, Marco Lainez, that Iowa has offered. "(Petras) is trying to find ways to make himself better," Racioppi said. "Coach O'Keefe lets me know what stuff he wants him to get better at, and that's what we'll do." - Iowa City Press-Citizen

The Nebraska football team signed four receivers in its 2019 scholarship recruiting class. None of them remain on the team. That's how it stands after redshirt freshman Jamie Nance on Sunday entered his name in the transfer portal, a move confirmed by the Journal Star. The 6-foot, 180-pound Nance never caught a pass at Nebraska and clearly was low on the depth chart coming out of spring drills. He didn't appear in a game last season and in 2019 appeared in only one. A native of Blanchard, Oklahoma, Nance became the second wide receiver in Nebraska's Class of 2019 in as many days to announce his departure. Saturday, Demariyon Houston, an Oklahoma City native, entered the portal. That followed the previous departures of Darien Chase (Portland State) and Wan'Dale Robinson (Kentucky). - Lincoln Journal Star

Anderson brought on his former quarterback Logan Bonner, from Arkansas State, to compete for the starting spot against returners Andrew Peasley and Cooper Legas. But Bonner has been recuperating from a broken bone in his foot all spring, Anderson said, so his inclusion into the fold will have to wait. Bonner's injury left the bulk of the quarterback minutes to Peasley and Legas, who both played well in Saturday's scrimmage. Peasley went 16 of 24 for 234 yards with one interception and threw three touchdown passes. Legas was more efficient, going 11 of 16 for 132 yards with two TD passes and no interceptions. Two other quarterbacks saw time, but Peasley and Legas seem like the current frontrunners. "Competition is still out there. We still have a lot of work to do at that position," Anderson said. "But I do think they've both improved through the course of the spring and have a good grasp of what we're wanting to do in this offense." - Salt Lake Tribune

A Utah State University football player was charged on Monday with sexually assaulting a woman in her dorm room, per court documents. Ismael Kalani Vaifo'ou, 22, is accused of entering the bed of a woman while she slept, according to a probable cause statement, wearing only his underwear. The woman woke up, pushed him and told him to leave, at which point he put his clothes back on and left. Witnesses who spoke with the woman reported to police that the she told them Vaifo'ou touched her inappropriately and assaulted her, per the probable cause statement. The police document also stated Vaifo'ou had been seen entering multiple rooms in the university dormitory where the woman lived. Police said that when they interviewed Vaifo'ou, they could smell alcohol on his breath and noticed other signs of impairment. - Salt Lake Tribune

Sean Chambers isn't the only Wyoming quarterback that's worked himself back from injury. Levi Williams took over the reins of the offense once Chambers went down with yet another leg injury three plays into UW's abbreviated season last fall, but Williams also dealt with his share of pain before it was over. The redshirt freshman started the final five games but wasn't able to finish them all because of a shoulder injury that, after the final couple of games, kept Williams from lifting his throwing arm above 90 degrees until the middle of the following week, UW coach Craig Bohl said. "It wasn't a shoulder separation, but it was certainly some significant irritation in there," Bohl added. Williams initially gave UW's much-maligned passing game a boost, throwing for 227 yards and a touchdown against Nevada and a career-high 321 yards two weeks later against Colorado State. But he completed just 7 of 25 passes in UW's final two games after sustaining the injury late against New Mexico and was replaced by true freshman Gavin Beerup in each one. "Within our passing tree, we really had to scale some things back," Bohl said. "We were really way off, and what that forced us to do was become way too one-dimensional. When you're completing the ball right around 46%, it's hard to have a lot of confidence in your passing game." - Casper Star-Tribune

Michigan defensive back Hunter Reynolds has entered his name in the NCAA transfer portal, the second Wolverine in the past week to indicate he's moving on. Reynolds is a graduate transfer and will be able to play immediately wherever he lands. Last week, receiver Giles Jackson revealed his decision to transfer. Michigan has had eight players enter the portal since the start of the year, including quarterback Joe Milton, who started five games last season, and running back Zach Charbonnet, who in 2019 set Michigan's freshman rushing record with 11 touchdowns. The 6-foot, 192-pound Reynolds played in 20 games while at Michigan. Last season he had 22 tackles, including two for loss. - Detroit News

Oregon State's crowded running back room became a little less so on Thursday. Redshirt junior Calvin Tyler Jr. announced on social media that he is entering the transfer portal. With the announcement, he gave a heartfelt goodbye to Oregon State's coaches and players. Tyler will leave Oregon State as a graduate transfer with two years of eligibility remaining. In 2020, he played in three games and ran for 45 yards and two touchdowns on 15 carries. Although he was buried on the depth chart behind Jermar Jefferson and B.J. Baylor for much of the season, Tyler delivered a massive mid-season contribution at Utah when Jefferson was absent due to COVID-19 protocols, and Baylor left the game with an injury. - Stillwater Press

The Utah State Aggies on Saturday received a commitment from a third player who is following new head coach Blake Anderson to Logan from Arkansas State, but that's not the only connection linebacker Justin Rice will have to his new home. For the first few years of his collegiate career, Rice starred at Fresno State before transferring to ASU, meaning he'll be returning to the Mountain West Conference. How good was Rice at Fresno State? He garnered first team MWC honors in 2019 and was named the conference's preseason Defensive Player of the Year in 2020 before transferring late to Arkansas State when it appeared as though the MWC wouldn't play in the fall. Then in his lone season at Arkansas State, the 6-foot-2, 225-pound Rice tallied 76 tackles, 18.5 of which went for a loss, which led the entire NCAA. - Deseret News

When quarterback Logan Bonner arrives in Logan as an official member of Utah State's football program, he will be joined by a close personal friend. A week ago, Bonner announced he would be transferring from Arkansas State. Wide receiver Brandon Bowling, one of Bonner's go-to targets during the 2020 season, will also be a future Aggie. Bowling made his decision known Monday on Twitter. Bowling is a graduate transfer with one season of eligibility remaining, while Bonner has two seasons left. Both former ASU players plan on enrolling at USU for the upcoming spring semester. - Herald Journal Tribune

Former Kansas cornerback Kyle Mayberry is headed to the Mountain West for his sixth and final season of college football. One of the many KU seniors from the 2020 roster to utilize the NCAA's transfer portal and blanket waiver for an extra year of eligibility, Mayberry announced on Twitter Saturday night he has committed to play at Utah State next season. As a fifth-year senior with the Jayhawks this past year, Mayberry finished with 25 total tackles, two pass breakups and a quarterback hurry in his eight appearances, mostly as a key backup. - KUSports
