2021 ALL-MOUNTAIN WEST SECOND TEAM (COACHES): KR - Savon Scarver, Sr., Utah State,...Scarver, a 5-11, 175-pound kickoff returner from Las Vegas, Nevada (Centennial HS), earned all-conference honors for the fourth time in his career as he was named first-team all-MW in both 2018 and 2019, and garnered honorable mention accolades in 2020. In 2021, Scarver tied the NCAA record for kickoff returns for touchdown in a career with seven as he returned a kickoff 100 yards for a score against UNLV (10/16). Overall, Scarver is one of just five players in NCAA history with seven-career kickoff returns for a touchdown. Thus far this season, Scarver has returned 23 kickoffs for 559 yards (24.3 ypr) and ranks first in the MW and 11th in the nation in kickoff returns for touchdown with one (0.08 pg), and third in the MW and 32nd in the nation in kickoff returns (24.2 ypr). - Utah State Football

As far as prestigious individual awards go, speedy kickoff returner Savon Scarver has won nearly every one of them during his record-setting career at Utah State. After all, Scarver was a consensus All-American as a sophomore for the Aggies in 2018, and the only way to accomplish that feat is to be recognized as a first-team All-American by three different official selectors (outlets). Additionally, the Las Vegas native garnered first-team all-Mountain West honors as a sophomore and junior, plus he received the Jet Award in '18, which is given annually to the nation's most outstanding return specialist.

The one major award that has eluded the former high school track & field state champion is Mountain West Special Teams Player of the Year. This is Scarver's final chance for that accolade, but he is the favorite according to members of the media that cover the conference. The senior was selected as the league's preseason Special Teams Player of the Year, it was announced Thursday as part of the Mountain West's annual football media days. The two-day event concluded Thursday at The Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas. - Herald Journal Tribune

The preseason awards are starting to roll in for the most decorated kickoff returner in Utah State history. Senior Savon Scarver was tabbed a fourth-team preseason All-American by Phil Steele Magazine, in addition to garnering a spot on this same publication's all-Mountain West first team. USU graduate transfer linebacker Justin Rice has also been named to Phil Steele's preseason all-MW first team, plus he secured a spot on Athlon Sport's all-conference second team. - Herald Journal Tribune

2020 ALL-MOUNTAIN WEST FOOTBALL HONORABLE MENTION (COACHES): Savon Scarver, KR,...Scarver, a 5-11, 180-pound senior kick returner from Las Vegas, Nev. (Centennial HS), returned 10 kickoffs for 314 yards (31.4 ypr), including a 94-yard return for touchdown against Fresno State. Of his 10 kickoff returns, three were for at least 30 yards. Overall, he was one of just four players in the MW and one of just 30 players nationally to return a kickoff for a touchdown this season and would have ranked second in the league in yards per return if he had enough returns to qualify, but played in just four games during the season. - Utah State Football

Utah State and coach Gary Andersen are parting ways after a 0-3 start to the season for the Aggies. Andersen was in Year 2 of his second stint at Utah State. Co-defensive coordinator Frank Maile will serve as the interim head coach for the remainder of the season. Andersen, 56, went 26-24 at Utah State from 2009-12, leaving after an 11-2 season to take over at Wisconsin. Utah State went 7-6 last season in Andersen's return, a disappointing season with eventual first-round draft pick Jordan Love at quarterback. This season the Aggies have been on the short end of three lopsided games, most recently a 34-9 loss to Nevada on Thursday night. Andersen was hired back by Utah State after the 2018 season to replace Matt Wells. - AP College Football

Sen. Mitt Romney pushed his idea for how student-athletes could get paid for the use of their name, image and likeness on Tuesday - but college leaders at a Senate hearing didn't support his plan. Romney, R-Utah, during a Senate committee hearing Tuesday suggested Congress could increase the ability to compensate all members of a college football team. Furthermore, he suggested those with a very high earning potential, the type of athlete who could make it to the NFL, be capped at $50,000 per year. After Romney finished, he posed that scenario directly to University of Wisconsin Chancellor Rebecca Blank. "I would oppose that type of thing, it becomes a pay-for-play system," Blank told Romney and the rest of the panel. "I have 860 student-athletes and I run those programs because I want those students to develop a set of skills that may not be developed in the classroom. I want them to learn self-discipline, self-confidence. This is about an educational process. The main benefit these students take away is their educational degree. It's not about coming here to earn money and to be an employee, so no, I wouldn't agree with you that I think that's a good idea." - Salt Lake Tribune

Savon Scarver has picked up where he left off as the nation's top kick returner. The Utah State junior ran back a kick 100 yards for a touchdown for the second time this season when he went the distance against Nevada on Saturday. He also had a 100 yarder against Colorado State on Sept. 28. Scarver, who averaged 33.7 yards per return to lead the nation in 2018, is averaging a Football Bowl Subdivision-best 43.4 yards on eight returns this season. "He has unbelievable natural instincts," Aggies coach Gary Andersen said. "He does a tremendous job of making things seem like not a big deal, but catching that ball when you're moving forward is such a part of being a great kickoff returner. He has 10 other guys that believe in him out on that field and know that if they get their block, there's a really good chance that some good things are going to happen. It becomes contagious."

All five of Scarver's school-record five kick return touchdowns have come in his last 32 runbacks. "Every time he can catch it, you better watch out," Andersen said. "The other guys deserve some credit also for making it so important for them to be at work every day in practice and knowing they have a big hitter behind them. It's awesome to watch him, it's like he's two gears ahead of everyone else on the field." The last two players to run back two kicks 100 yards in the same season were Tony Pollard of Memphis and Darius Phillips of Western Michigan in 2017. - AP College Football

Gerold Bright had 126 yards rushing and two scores on 15 carries, Savon Scarver had a 100-yard kickoff return for a touchdown, and Utah State beat Nevada 36-10 in the snow on Saturday night. The Wolf Pack, on the game's opening possession, had first-and-goal from the 8 but a holding penalty and a false start forced them to settle for a 23-yard field goal by Brandon Talton. Scarver returned the ensuing kickoff for a touchdown, the first of 36 consecutive points by the Aggies (4-2, 3-0 Mountain West). Bright scored on runs of 67 and 9 yards - just 84 seconds apart - to make it 36-3 with 10:03 left in the game. Taua had 20 carries for 80 yards, including a 20-yard touchdown run late in the fourth quarter, for Nevada (4-3, 1-2). Utah State's two losses this year have both come on the road against Power 5 conference teams. The Aggies lost 38-35 to Wake Forest in their season opener and 42-6 to then-No. 5 (and currently second-ranked) LSU on Oct. 5. - Utah State/AP College Football
