  09/29/20 - TJ PledgerSr/2022, Utah, 5-08, 192 (DS#46 RB) + More +

OU junior T.J. Pledger made his season debut against Kansas State, receiving the starting nod over Seth McGowan and Marcus Major. Pledger finished with a team second-leading 41 yards rushing on 13 carries. He also made an impact in OU's passing game, recording 30 yards on three catches. Pledger never was able to break off any big runs. Though, he and the rest of OU's running backs showed plenty of toughness against a quality Kansas State defensive line. "I thought we ran hard and pretty physical," Riley said. "Both Seth (McGowan) and TJ did. But obviously, we had the one fumble on the ground and then just again, weren't able to shake loose and really pop any. And then when we did, I can think of two of them that we had big penalties on. "Running game was definitely more consistent but was not near as explosive as we needed it to be." - Norman Transcript

  08/29/20 - Britain CoveyrSr/2022, Utah, 5-08, 169 (DS#34 WR) + More +

Britain Covey hears the jokes, but in fairness, jokes about how old he is and how long he has been at the University of Utah are probably valid. Still only a redshirt junior at the age of 23 after taking a two-year LDS mission during the 2016 and 2017 seasons, Covey's first collegiate game was against the University of Michigan in 2015. The game stands out because it was Jim Harbaugh's head-coaching debut with the Wolverines, which, on a college football timeline, feels like a lifetime ago. With no fall football for the Pac-12, and no promise of a winter/spring season at this point, Covey, aware of his age and injury history, plans to play out the final two years of his career at Utah, at which point it would theoretically be the fall of 2022 and he will be 25.

Instead of waiting for those jokes to come in two years, Covey is getting out in front of them. "If I do, I'll be the first grandpa in college football history," Covey joked to The Salt Lake Tribune late last week. "I know my age is a running joke, but honestly, I feel like I'm in my prime and my body is where it's never been before. You look at the NFL, the best wide receivers, the average age is 27, 28-years old. Those guys are craftsmen, but they needed to mature and develop. I think I'm just entering that phase." Covey continues to believe the NFL is an attainable goal, but he's keeping it in the back of his mind with more pressing matters to deal with in the present. - Salt Lake Tribune

  07/06/20 - Brant KuitherSr/2025, Utah, 6-2, 236 (DS#2 FB) + More +

The bad news for the University of Utah is that once mandatory summer activities and training camp begin, coaches still need to figure out who the starting quarterback will be. The good news is, whether it's South Carolina graduate transfer Jake Bentley or redshirt sophomore Cameron Rising, that signal caller is going to have more than a fair amount of pass-catching options. Entering the 2020 season, the Utes return seven players who caught at least 10 passes last season. Chief among them is junior tight end Brant Kuithe, whose emergence in the second half of the season was a revelation. His 34 catches for 602 yards and 6 touchdowns as a sophomore mark him as one of, if not the top returning tight end in the Pac-12. Utah possesses a second starting-caliber tight end thanks to junior Cole Fotheringham (16 catches, 156 yards, 1 TD). - Salt Lake Tribune

  06/05/20 - Morgan ScalleySr/2005, Utah, 5-10, 199 (DS#21 FS) + More +

Utah has suspended defensive coordinator Morgan Scalley for using a racial slur in a 2013 text message. Utes athletic director Mark Harlan said in a statement Friday that he was made aware of a social media post that referenced the text message. Utah will have an outside firm review the matter for more details and to determine whether it was an isolated incident. Morgan will be suspended until the review is completed. "The use of any form of racist language is not only antithetical to our policies and our values, but it is an affront to all of us, especially our African-American community members," Harlan said. Morgan acknowledged use of the slur and apologized in a statement released by the school. Scalley has been an assistant at Utah for 13 years, the past five as defensive coordinator. - AP College Football

  05/20/20 - Cameron RisingrSr/2025, Utah, 6-2, 220 (DS#28 QB) + More +

When the COVID-19 pandemic shut down Utah spring practice in mid-March, Cameron Rising had an early leg up in the Utes' spring/summer quarterback competition with Jake Bentley and Drew Lisk. In hindsight, that was to be expected. Rising spent the 2019 season in residence after the NCAA denied his immediate-eligibility waiver. Instead of being eligible right away, Rising ran the scout team, while working with first-year offensive coordinator Andy Ludwig. Rising even spent home game days in the Rice-Eccles Stadium press box to gain a better understanding of the offense and how Ludwig calls a game. "It's been great, something I don't take for granted," Rising told The Salt Lake Tribune via phone last week from his home in Ventura, Calif., which remains under a stay-well-at-home order through the end of the month. "How much I saw last season, it was mind-boggling at times how much work really goes into a game day. Seeing him call a game, experiencing that, I got to see how Coach Ludwig acts and I think that can only benefit me."

Rising may have impressed in the early days of spring ball, but that means little anymore. At this point, the quarterback situation at Utah is unsettled. It will remain so until everyone is back on campus and going through whatever ramp-up and training camp is allowed ahead of the season. "I felt like things were going well and I was ready to keep it going," Rising said. "We'd just gotten pads on and I was itching to get back after it after spring break. I wanted to keep working with the team. A lot of development was happening and we all could have used as many reps as possible. "We all just need to hang in there and make sure we hit the ground running when we come back. No hitches or anything like that, get back to work and get better." - Salt Lake Tribune

There are a slew of awards handed out at the close of every college football season. The Heisman Trophy is the most notable, but there is also the Maxwell Award and the Walter Camp Award, each given to the player of the year. There is the Jim Thorpe Award, awarded to the nation's best defensive back, and the Davey O'Brien Award, which honors the country's best quarterback, and, well, you get the idea. There is basically a prestigious award for every position on the football field, not to mention All-America honors and more beyond that. With so much recognition of the athletes, deservedly so, college football is hardly in need of another award. And yet, that is what CBS Sports' Matt Hinton recently proposed, albeit facetiously.

What is this new award, you ask? Hinton calls it the "The Taysom Hill Trophy for perpetual eligibility." It honors the college football player who has been on the scene for so long that there is no way, at first glance, that they could possibly still be eligible to play. And this year's winner, according to Hinton, is Utah's Britain Covey. - Salt Lake Tribune

  04/20/20 - Francis BernardrSr/2020, Utah, 6-0, 234 (DS#8 ILB) + More +

On March 27, Bernard and a handful of other prospects, including Utes teammate and projected second-day selection Bradlee Anae, were at All-American Park in Las Vegas to run the 40, 20-yard shuttle and the L drill. The event was timed by Zybek Timing and CEO Mike Weinstein, which is important for two reasons. One, Zybek has the clout of doing the timing for the NFL Scouting Combine. Two, Zybek does laser timing, so even without the Combine spotlight, a time produced by Zybek will be taken seriously by NFL personnel, who were not allowed to attend. Bernard made up for his 4.81 at the Combine by running 4.65 in Vegas. "I definitely feel relieved about it," Bernard said. "I wanted to reassure people I am not a 4.8 guy, and you could already see that on film."

On April 8, in a workout run by Jordan Pendleton of Lehi-based Pendleton Performance, Bernard did positional drills at Summit Academy's Bluffdale campus. Five days later, LaBoy emailed a Vimeo link with 28 videos of Bernard working out to roughly 150 NFL personnel, general managers, college scouting directors and area scouts. Things haven't been easy, but the end result appears to have been fruitful. After meeting with 17 teams at the Combine, Bernard has met with 14 via video conferencing. Most reputable projections have Bernard as a third-day selection, potentially as high as the middle of the fourth round. "I feel good about the feedback from teams and my agent, so I'm feeling pretty confident about the draft," Bernard said. "Some of the feedback has said late third round, so I'm just hoping more teams see me. The projections vary all over the place. "I left everything out there and I think I check off a lot of boxes. It's up to the teams to like me or not." - Salt Lake Tribune

  04/19/20 - Zack MossSr/2020, Utah, 5-09, 223 (DS#7 RB) + More +

For better or worse, the 40-yard dash is a significant factor in helping to determine an NFL draft prospect's worth, especially at a skill position like running back. Zack Moss ran the 40 twice at the NFL Scouting Combine on Feb. 28, and neither effort sufficed. One of a school-record nine prospects at the Combine, the University of Utah's all-time leading rusher ran a 4.72 on his first attempt at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, followed by a 4.65, making him the fourth-slowest of the 28 running backs to run the 40. It was revealed later that evening that Moss had tweaked his hamstring earlier in the day during other Combine drills, but he wanted to power through the rest. Either way, that 40 time would not do. That wasn't going to be a problem with Utah Pro Day slated for March 26. Moss would get his hamstring right, run the 40 again in Salt Lake City, and the 40 at the Combine would be an afterthought. The COVID-19 pandemic had other ideas. In the wake of the Pac-12 and the Utah athletic department suspending all athletic-related activities, Utah Pro Day was axed, which left Moss and his agent, Jamal Tooson, surveying their options.

"We were working closely with the University of Utah, reaching out to them to see if it would be canceled," Tooson told The Salt Lake Tribune. "When I was given confirmation they wanted to reschedule pro day, we needed to get ahead of the curve, get that workout done and get it to teams. "Zack's 40 was certainly one box teams had questions about. With the hamstring injury, he hadn't run consistently, so we needed to get that time and get it out there. That was critically important." On March 20, with a stay-at-home order bearing down on California, Moss ran a fully electronic 4.52 40 at Lions Field. A 4.65 wouldn't suffice, but a 4.52 certainly will. That mark would have been good for No. 10 among running backs at the Combine. - Salt Lake Tribune

  04/18/20 - Tyler HuntleySr/2020, Utah, 6-1, 196 (DS#20 QB) + More +

When it comes to Tyler Huntley, Utah offensive coordinator Andy Ludwig doesn't mince any words. "He's the best quarterback I've ever coached," said Ludwig, who has worked with signal-callers like David Carr, the No. 1 NFL pick in 2002, and Brian Johnson, the 2009 Sugar Bowl Most Outstanding Player. "The guy is going to be an excellent pro," Ludwig said. "He's going to be an excellent professional quarterback." "Whoever takes him or whatever camp he gets into, they're going to be pleasantly surprised because he's a fierce competitor and like I said I think he is not getting the recognition that he deserves." - Utah coach Kyle Whittingham, on Tyler Huntley

It wasn't enough, though, to get Huntley a spot in the combine - even though five other Pac-12 quarterbacks participated - Jacob Eason (Washington), Anthony Gordon (Washington State), Justin Herbert (Oregon), Jake Luton (Oregon State) and Steven Montez (Colorado). "I think people are missing the boat on Tyler. I was hoping he would get an invite to the combine, didn't happen - at least he got to play in those all-star games," said Utah coach Kyle Whittingham. "Whoever takes him or whatever camp he gets into, they're going to be pleasantly surprised because he's a fierce competitor and like I said I think he is not getting the recognition that he deserves." - Salt Lake Tribune

  04/18/20 - *Javelin K. GuidryJr/2020, Utah, 5-09, 191 (DS#21 CB) + More +

Javelin Guidry made quite an impression at the NFL Scouting Combine. According to ESPN, the former Utah nickel back became the first player since 2006 to post a sub-4.3 time in the 40 and also exceed 20 reps in the 225-pound bench press. The two-time Pac-12 honorable mention selection enters the upcoming NFL draft as someone to watch, that is if folks are able to keep an eye on him. "You can't coach speed and he's got it. He's got a ton of speed," said Utah defensive coordinator Morgan Scalley. "He's a willing tackler and some team is going to get a steal with this kid because not many guys are ever going to run away from him." Besides that, Scalley noted that Guidry is a "great kid off the field as well." That includes athletics. He holds the distinction of winning high school championships in two populous states in the 100 meters - 2016 in Texas and 2017 in California.

"Obviously his most redeeming quality is that speed," said Utah coach Kyle Whittingham. "That's obviously Jav's strong suit is his incredible speed. He's also extremely tough and has for us played that nickel position extremely well." In 41 games at Utah, Guidry tallied 120 tackles (82 solo) with 19 passes defended and three interceptions. The 5-foot-9, 193-pound defensive back made 25 starts over the 2017, 2018 and 2019 seasons. "My experience there was unreal, the greatest experience of my life," Guidry said. "I was able to grow as a man and as a football player as well. It was a great time for me." - Salt Lake Tribune
