  04/13/20 - Bradlee AnaeSr/2020, Utah, 6-3, 257 (DS#6 DE) + More +

Bradlee Anae will have a beautiful view and supreme surroundings when his name is called at the NFL draft. The former University of Utah defensive end will be in picturesque Laie, Hawaii. Waiting and watching the draft on television isn't an option for the 6-foot-3, 257-pound consensus All-American. "Oh no, no. I'm going to be on the beach. I'm going to be quarantining myself on the beach and whenever the phone rings I'll pick it up," Anae said. "It's a one-minute walk from my house to the beach, so I'll get the call and then walk over and make the announcement to family and that will be that." Anae added that he plans to get a beach chair, cruise out there and be soaking in the sun when he learns his NFL destination.

He'll be in paradise, after all. "Oh no, no. I'm going to be on the beach. I'm going to be quarantining myself on the beach and whenever the phone rings I'll pick it up." "I didn't want to be glued on the TV when I'm in Hawaii," said Anae, who may be joined on the beach by some buddies and cousins. After getting his call, Anae noted that he'll watch the draft on television to see where his former Utah teammates are headed. "Definitely. I want to see where everybody gets picked up," Anae said. "I would love to land somewhere with a teammate like how Cody (Barton) and Marquise (Blair) are in Seattle," Anae said. "That's pretty cool to me. But, yeah, I'll definitely be watching out and looking for the guys to see where they go." - Deseret News

  04/13/20 - John PenisiniSr/2020, Utah, 6-1, 318 (DS#29 DT) + More +

Considering he played alongside two All-Americans in Bradlee Anae and Leki Fotu, John Penisini could easily have been known as just the other senior on Utah's highly touted defensive line. Penisini, though, proved to be much more than that. The two-time All-Pac-12 honoree was a definite force to reckon with up front for the Utes. Defensive coordinator Morgan Scalley noted that Penisini has a great will to win. Such an attitude helped the 6-foot-2, 333-pound tackle earn an invite to both the East-West Shrine Bowl and the NFL Scouting Combine. "I would say the reason that scouts are interested in John is this is a guy that never takes a play off, that loves the game of football and it shows in every single rep," Scalley said. "He is a guy that doesn't have the length that's going to wow you or the size, he just has that motor and that will to win. He's a guy that loves the game and he's a fairly efficient pass rusher." In 2019, Penisini recorded 38 tackles - seven behind the line of scrimmage, including two sacks. He was named Pac-12 Defensive Lineman of Week after making a career-high seven tackles and a forced fumble in Utah's 33-28 win at Washington on Nov. 2. "I would say the reason that scouts are interested in John is this is a guy that never takes a play off, that loves the game of football and it shows in every single rep." - Utah defensive coordinator Morgan Scalley" - Deseret News

  04/11/20 - Jaylon JohnsonJr/2020, Utah, 6-0, 193 (DS#6 CB) + More +

Earlier this week, the NFL announced that it would hold a "fully virtual" 2020 NFL draft, due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Late Thursday night, NFL.com released a list of players who will participate in those online proceedings come April 23-25, and among them are Utah cornerback Jaylon Johnson and Utah State quarterback Jordan Love. Both Johnson and Love have been mentioned as potential first-round picks in the buildup to the draft, and they will join 56 additional prospects who are expected to participate in the virtual event.

Love is one of seven quarterbacks, including LSU's Joe Burrow, Alabama's Tua Tagovailoa and Oregon's Justin Herbert, expected to be involved. Johnson, meanwhile, is one of nine defensive backs, including LSU's Grant Delpit, Florida's CJ Henderson and Ohio State's Jeffrey Okudah. The Pac-12 Conference will be represented by Herbert, Johnson, USC's Austin Jackson (OT), Arizona State's Brandon Aiyuk (WR), Washington's Jacob Eason (QB) and Colorado's Laviska Shenault (WR). - Deseret News

  04/08/20 - Zack MossSr/2020, Utah, 5-09, 223 (DS#7 RB) + More +

Nearly two years ago, former Atlanta Falcons All-Pro and University of Utah alum Jamal Anderson went to Salt Lake City to meet Utes running back Zack Moss. Since then, the two have formed a relationship, and with Moss now just a few weeks away from almost surely getting drafted by an NFL team, the pair met Wednesday for a nearly hourlong chat on Instagram Live, discussing different topics centered on their common past at Utah and what awaits Moss in the professional ranks. "I'm not Marshawn Lynch. No way possible. That guy is a different animal, but I'm not surprised, because I did take a lot of things and try to implement them into my game and make them my own and put my own type of thing on them." - Zack Moss.

Moss, Utah's career rushing leader, said that despite the coronavirus pandemic, which will require some massive changes to the NFL draft later this month, he's still been able to work out just about every single day at Athletic Gaines in California. "It's still been a blessing for me to be able to have somewhere I can still work out," he said. The two spent some time talking about the NFL scouting combine, which went from Feb. 23-March 2. Moss said he met with officials from about 15 of the league's 32 teams, although he's fully aware of the fact he could get drafted by any squad (Anderson noted how he hadn't had much contact with the Falcons before they selected him in 1994). "It was just mind-boggling, the people you get to meet, just the learning that you continue to get every day that you're there," Moss said. "It's grueling, but it's something that you won't forget." - Deseret News

  04/06/20 - Jaylon JohnsonJr/2020, Utah, 6-0, 193 (DS#6 CB) + More +

Jaylon Johnson was all set to be in Las Vegas for the upcoming NFL draft. He planned on being one of the players that was to be taken by boat to a red carpet stage in front of the Bellagio fountains after being picked. Then came the coronavirus. The NFL canceled the public event and will opt for a studio show (April 23-25) instead to help stem the spread of the virus. "I was planning on going," said Johnson, who is now looking forward to having the biggest smallest gathering he can in his hometown of Fresno, California. The plan there is to enjoy the draft the best way he can. Johnson, a 2019 All-American and a two-time first-team All-Pac-12 honoree, isn't expecting to be on the board for long.

"I'm just going to deal with whatever happens, but for me personally I'm not expecting anything less than the first round - whether it's the middle and wherever it may be," Johnson said. "I don't really pay attention to what the mock drafts say. That's based on some of my knowledge that I have. So I don't expect to get out of the first round." Johnson added that he's spoken with a lot of different teams and has established relationships. "I'm not too sure exactly who would be a favorite or who would be a front-runner or anything like that," Johnson said. "I just know I've talked to a lot of teams and you never know in a process like this." - Deseret News

  03/15/20 - Jaylon JohnsonJr/2020, Utah, 6-0, 193 (DS#6 CB) + More +

When news broke on Feb. 24 that Jaylon Johnson played most of last season with a torn right labrum, it was nothing short of a revelation. As a junior cornerback last fall at the University of Utah, the Fresno, Calif., native was named an All-American after ranking third in the Pac-12 with 11 pass breakups. His two interceptions in 13 starts included a 39-yard pick-six at Washington that helped shift momentum in that win in Seattle, while standing as arguably the Utes' biggest play of the season. The injury reportedly happened at some point in September, making the strong season Johnson had even more remarkable. Now consider that Johnson says the injury occurred even earlier than that.

"It happened sometime in 2018, not sure which game or practice, I really didn't know what was wrong," Johnson told The Salt Lake Tribune on Thursday morning via phone, eight days removed from surgery to repair the torn right labrum. "Going into fall camp, there was a tackling drill and the shoulder just went numb, it was really loose. Talking to the trainer, we knew something was wrong, but I fought through it. I wasn't too concerned with an MRI or an X-ray. "I wanted to do whatever I could and tough it out. I wasn't going to mess up what I had planned, I had a lot on the line." - Salt Lake Tribune

  03/14/20 - Francis BernardrSr/2020, Utah, 6-0, 234 (DS#8 ILB) + More +

Before the NFL stepped in on pro days and made up everyone's mind for them, those represented more of a gray area. The showcase for Utah's NFL-bound prospects did not fall within any Pac-12 mandate for cancelation, and it did not include current Utah student-athletes. Still, with the American sports scene barren, cancelation was the only reasonable course of action. "It makes sense because you'd have 32 teams flying in and you don't want all those people to get together in one place," former All-Pac-12 Utah linebacker Francis Bernard told The Salt Lake Tribune Thursday morning from his training base in San Diego, in between the Pac-12 and Utah announcements. "My agent and I have been discussing maybe doing a private workout. It would be easy to get a Chargers scout in there, take the information or the results and spread it to other teams."

Bernard's point about a private workout at some point in the six weeks before the NFL Draft is valid, but someone in his position could have benefit from working out in front of a wider audience. One of a program-record nine Utes invited to the NFL Scouting Combine, Bernard tweaked his hamstring before the 40-yard dash. He tried to push through it, but wound up running a 4.81 at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis. That mark stood as the sixth-slowest among the 30 linebackers who ran the 40 at the Combine. "I'm not a 4.8 guy," Bernard said. "I hurt my hamstring during the jumps before the 40, but I was in the moment and felt like running. I thought I could ride the adrenaline, but I unfortunately didn't. I'm looking forward to really showing what I can do." - Salt Lake Tribune
