Carson Steele ran for 124 yards on 28 carries and Ben VonGunten's 22-yard field goal with 12:14 remaining carried Ball State past Central Michigan 17-16 on Saturday. The Cardinals' (3-3, 2-1 Mid-American Conference) defense forced Central Michigan to punt on its next two possessions and a turnover on downs to end it. Central Michigan took a 10-0 lead when Lew Nichols III crashed in from the 1 to end the first quarter. John Paddock got the Cardinals back in it when he threw a 2-yard scoring pass to Brady Hunt with 5:01 left before halftime.

Ball State took its first lead when Sydney Houston scooped up a fumble and ran it in from 4 yards for a 14-10 lead. Daniel Richardson threw a 17-yard scoring pass to Carlos Carriere with 2:07 left in the third to give the Chippewas a 16-14 lead after the failed extra-point attempt. Central Michigan (1-5, 0-2) won most major statistical categories save the final score. The Chippewas outgained Ball State 340-250 in total yards, held the ball for 36:16 to 23:44 and held the Cardinals to 0 for 13 on third-down conversions.   Dorian Thompson-Robinson passed for 299 yards and four TDs to become UCLA's career leader in passing touchdowns, Zach Charbonnet rushed for a career high 198 yards and the 18th-ranked Bruins defeated No. 11 Utah 42-32 on Saturday. Thompson-Robinson also had a rushing score for the Bruins, who are 6-0 overall for the first time since 2005, 3-0 in the Pac-12 and picked up the biggest victory in coach Chip Kelly's five years in Westwood. They have won nine straight dating back to last season, which is their longest streak since running off 20 straight victories in 1997-98. Thompson-Robinson's only mistake came late in the fourth quarter when he was picked off by Clark Phillips III and returned 80 yards for a touchdown. Cameron Rising passed for 287 yards and ran for a pair of scores for the Utes (4-2, 2-1), who had won five straight in the series by an average of 27 points.

Rising started slow, hitting just one of his first five throws for 14 yards and an interception before finishing 23 of 32. Tavion Thomas rushed for 91 yards and a score. Thompson-Robinson, who completed 18 of 23, connected twice for scores with Jake Bobo. There was a 7-yard TD pass in the back of the end zone to extend UCLA's lead to 14-3 in the second quarter and a 10-yard strike late in the third quarter to make it 28-18. UCLA led 14-10 at halftime and scored on its first four drives of the second half as Utah could not keep pace. The Bruins got the ball to begin the third quarter and converted on Kam Brown's 5-yard TD catch to push the lead into double digits. After Rising's 9-yard keeper got the Utes within 28-25 early in the fourth quarter, Thompson-Robinson connected with a wide open Logan Loya for a 70-yard touchdown. That score with 11:17 remaining was the 76th touchdown pass of Thompson-Robinson's career, passing Brett Hundley for the most in school history. - UCLA/AP College Football

Dorian Thompson-Robinson passed for 315 yards and three touchdowns and UCLA beat No. 15 Washington 40-32 in a Friday night matchup of unbeaten Pac-12 teams at the Rose Bowl. The fifth-year senior - who had his sixth 300-yard passing game - also ran 2 yards for a score in the third quarter, when he sidestepped defenders Bralen Trice and Jayvion Green, causing them to fall on one another in a heap near the goal line in making it 33-10. Thompson-Robinson supplied the highlight plays, but plenty of other Bruins contributed to their first regular-season win over a top-15 team since 2014. It is also UCLA's first 5-0 start since 2013.

Zach Charbonnet rushed for 124 yards and a score, Jake Bobo had six receptions for 142 yards and a pair of TDs while the Bruins recorded their first safety in four years and forced a pair of turnovers. Washington's Michael Penix came into the game leading the nation in passing yards but struggled in the first half as UCLA (2-0 Pac-12) scored on four straight drives and jumped out to a 26-10 halftime lead. Penix finished 33 of 48 for 345 yards, four touchdowns and two interceptions. Penix passed for a pair of touchdowns and 2-point conversions in the fourth quarter as the Huskies got within eight, but UCLA ran out the final three minutes. Rome Odunze had eight receptions for 116 yards and two touchdowns. - UCLA/AP College Football

  09/24/22 - Zach CharbonnetSr/2023, UCLA, 6-0, 222 (DS#3 RB) + More +

Zach Charbonnet ran for three touchdowns and Dorian Thompson-Robinson threw for two more to power UCLA to its seventh straight win, a 45-17 rout of winless Colorado on Saturday. The Bruins (4-0, 1-0 Pac-12) left Boulder with their first victory at Folsom Field since 2014 and their longest winning streak since winning their first eight games in 2005. Freshman left-hander Owen McCown, the son of longtime NFL quarterback Josh McCown, made his starting debut for Colorado (0-4, 0-1), which has now been outscored 173-47, the first time in program history the Buffaloes have lost four consecutive games by at least 25 points.

McCown got his chance after last year's starter, Brendon Lewis and Tennessee transfer J.T. Shrout failed to ignite Colorado's stagnant offense. McCown scored on a 2-yard keeper and capped an 85-yard, 14-play drive with an 8-yard scoring strike to fellow freshman Jordan Tyson but he had two turnovers and couldn't keep the Buffaloes from dropping to 0-4 for the first time since 2006. McCown finished 26 of 42 for 258 yards with a TD and an interception. He was sacked five times. UCLA outrushed Colorado 249 yards to 51 and the Bruins dominated the Pac-12 opener for both teams with touchdown drives on its first three possessions to build a 21-3 lead that was never threatened. - UCLA/AP College Football

Nicholas Barr-Mira kicked a 24-yard field goal on the final play of the game and UCLA escaped South Alabama's upset bid with a 32-31 victory Saturday. The Jaguars looked to be in control of becoming the fourth Sun Belt Conference team in two weeks to beat a Power Five team, but were done in when a trick play went awry. The Jaguars tried a fake field goal with 2:52 remaining but Tanner McGee was sacked by Carl Jones Jr., giving the Bruins the ball at the 33. UCLA drove 61 yards in 10 plays, culminating in Barr-Mira's second field goal of the day. Dorian Thompson-Robinson completed 20 of 30 passes for 263 yards and three touchdowns as the Bruins start 3-0 for the first time since 2015.

La'Damian Webb rushed for 124 yards and a touchdown and Carter Bradley passed for 237 yards and two scores for South Alabama (2-1), which was looking to join Marshall, Appalachian State and Georgia Southern in the Sun Belt's hit parade. Last Saturday, Marshall and Appalachian State posted upsets against ranked teams Notre Dame and Texas A&M and Georgia Southern's win over Nebraska got Scott Frost fired. Webb and Bradley transferred to South Alabama this season. Webb, who spent the past two seasons at Jones Community College in Mississippi, had his first 100-yard game. Bradley was at Toledo the last four years and nearly led the Rockets to a road upset at Notre Dame last season. He completed 26 of 36 passes, including a 4-yard TD to Caullin Lacy late in the third quarter to put the Jaguars up 31-23 late in the third quarter. - UCLA/AP College Football

  09/10/22 - Jalen BergerrSr/2026, UCLA, 6-0, 215 (DS#999 RB) + More +

Jalen Berger ran for 107 yards and three touchdowns and Michigan State's defense forced four fumbles Saturday to help the 14th ranked Spartans to a 52-0 victory over Akron. It was the largest margin of victory for Michigan State (2-0) since beating Eastern Michigan by 59 points in 2014. "Our focus was better, our intensity throughout was better," Michigan State coach Mel Tucker said. "There was a lot of good things for us to build upon with our team in all three phases. And we have some things to clean up if we expect to go on the road and get anything done." Kendell Brooks, filling in for injured starting safety Xavier Henderson, forced the ball out twice in the first quarter.

He has forced three fumbles in the Spartans' first two games. "KB, he's getting better," Tucker said. "We have confidence in him to go in the game and get the job done and make plays and be physical and knock the ball off people. I think as he gains more experience he's going to continue to get better. That's good when guys can go in, execute and make plays." On Akron's opening drive, the senior safety knocked the ball loose from tight end TJ Banks and linebacker Cal Haladay picked up the ball and ran 22 yards to the Michigan State 41. Six plays later, Jarek Broussard scored on a 1-yard run. Haladay later forced a fumble in the second half when he sacked backup quarterback Jeff Undercuffler. - Michigan State/AP College Football

Dorian Thompson-Robinson accounted for 385 yards of total offense and four scores, Zach Charbonnet ran for 111 yards and a touchdown, and UCLA rallied for a 45-17 victory over Bowling Green Saturday in the season opener for both teams. The Bruins trailed 17-7 early in the second quarter before scoring 38 straight points to win their opener for the second straight year. Thompson-Robinson completed 32 of 43 passes for 298 yards and two touchdowns along with rushing for 87 yards and two scores. The fifth-year senior supplied an early highlight with a career-long 68-yard TD run during the first quarter to tie the game at seven.

Bowling Green brought a nickel blitz on third-and-3, but the fifth-year senior escaped pressure from Davon Ferguson in the backfield, scrambled right, went down the sideline and then cut across the field, including escaping another diving tackle attempt from a Falcons defender at the BG 34, before going into the end zone. Charbonnet posted his eighth 100-yard rushing game since transferring from Michigan last year. The Bruins rushed for 264 yards, improving to 16-4 when that has happened since Chip Kelly became coach in 2018. UCLA scored 17 straight points in the second quarter to take a 24-17 lead at halftime. Keegan Jones supplied the go-ahead score when he caught a screen pass from Thompson-Robinson and went 52 yards up the left sideline. - UCLA/AP College Football
