Dorian Thompson-Robinson accounted for 385 yards of total offense and four scores, Zach Charbonnet ran for 111 yards and a touchdown, and UCLA rallied for a 45-17 victory over Bowling Green Saturday in the season opener for both teams. The Bruins trailed 17-7 early in the second quarter before scoring 38 straight points to win their opener for the second straight year. Thompson-Robinson completed 32 of 43 passes for 298 yards and two touchdowns along with rushing for 87 yards and two scores. The fifth-year senior supplied an early highlight with a career-long 68-yard TD run during the first quarter to tie the game at seven.

Bowling Green brought a nickel blitz on third-and-3, but the fifth-year senior escaped pressure from Davon Ferguson in the backfield, scrambled right, went down the sideline and then cut across the field, including escaping another diving tackle attempt from a Falcons defender at the BG 34, before going into the end zone. Charbonnet posted his eighth 100-yard rushing game since transferring from Michigan last year. The Bruins rushed for 264 yards, improving to 16-4 when that has happened since Chip Kelly became coach in 2018. UCLA scored 17 straight points in the second quarter to take a 24-17 lead at halftime. Keegan Jones supplied the go-ahead score when he caught a screen pass from Thompson-Robinson and went 52 yards up the left sideline. - UCLA/AP College Football

  08/22/22 - Jacob SykesrSr/2023, UCLA + More +

Harvard transfer Jacob Sykes found a new home in UCLA through the transfer portal this offseason. Sykes has set high expectations for himself and believes his mindset falls in line with what is being asked of the defense this season. "I attack every day thinking I am the best player in the world," Sykes said. "I just have to prove it every day. I want to establish myself as a dominant player and even if I don't play well one day I'm going to attack the next day with the same mindset." Sykes is a redshirt senior with aspirations of playing in the NFL after his time at UCLA. He had opportunities to play for Northwestern and Rutgers and several Ivy League programs coming out of high school but decided Harvard was best for him. "I settled on Harvard because the name Harvard (on a degree) will open doors," Sykes said. "God forbid I get hurt or anything like that, but I have a great degree to help support my family and those types of things."

He also believes Harvard offered a great balance of athletics and academics for him, with the Ivy League offering a "great caliber of football" that can prepare players for success in the NFL. Sykes decided to explore his options to play for another program in a bigger conference after 2021, because of the extra year of eligibility that was offered to all student-athletes after the pandemic-shortened 2020 season. "It's going good," Sykes said of the level of competition at UCLA. "It's a little bit different here. It's a lot more up-tempo and fast-paced and the guys are a little bit bigger and stronger but it's going well." - Orange County Register

  08/18/22 - Mike MartinezSr/2023, UCLA + More +

UCLA football coach Chip Kelly confirmed that tight end Mike Martinez is no longer with the program. Martinez played in all three nonconference games last season before an injury kept him out for the rest of the season. The former Mater Dei High standout played in all 19 games during his first two seasons with the program. Martinez participated in spring practice but Kelly did not provide details about the tight end's departure. He was considered the Bruins' best blocking tight end. "(We) have to compensate," Kelly said. "We feel good about our tight end room. They're working extremely hard and I think it's a really good group and we're going to move on." The coach believes tight end is still one of his "deepest" positions on the roster. Michael Ezeike is expected to start at the position and was named to the John Mackey Award watch list for the honor given to the best tight end at the end of the season. The redshirt senior played on special teams and as a reserve receiver during his first three years with the program before switching to tight end in 2021. - Los Angeles Times

After unfollowing team beat writers on Twitter three games - and three losses - into his college career and questioning fickle admirers with his "Don't be a fan later" and "Friends over fans" brands, Thompson-Robinson has shifted his focus to more important endeavors. "At this point, our concern is with NFL scouts and GMs and owners and head coaches," said Dorian's mother, Melva Thompson-Robinson. "So it's not a matter of trying to be mean or anything, but we have to be focused on a bigger prize. He and I have been talking since the early spring about, 'Dorian, you want to be a pro? It's time to step it up and walk like a pro, act like a pro, talk like a pro, throw like a pro, work like a pro.' You know, all these things. CLA quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson, right, avoids a tackle by Arizona State defensive lineman Omarr Norman-Lott.

As part of that change, Thompson-Robinson has undergone his own transformation. He welcomes criticism, embracing the ways it can help him improve, no matter how hard it might be to hear. All those losses he's endured? He's studied the details like an autopsy, trying to understand what it will take to turn a disappointing season into one that leaves a legacy. He knows he can't run backward under pressure or let the ball slip out of his hand or throw into tight coverage, all maddening tendencies of earlier seasons. There always will be critics. Brandon Walker has something to say? Thompson-Robinson is listening, ready to absorb every word in the hope it can avert more disappointment. "There's always the one or two games - whether it's the Arizona States, the 'SCs, the Utahs, the Oregons - that we let slip away that if we win those games, we're in that big game, we're in the Rose Bowl, we're in the Pac-12 championship," Thompson-Robinson said. "So for me he's right and that's going to remind me every day that on those three big games that we've got this year that I've got circled - Arizona State, 'SC and Utah - that we've got to finish, we've got to win those games so that we can play in the games that we want to." - Los Angeles Times

  08/15/22 - Jake BoborSr/2023, UCLA + More +

The Duke transfer has the potential to be the No. 1 receiver for quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson and the offense this season. The 6-foot-5, 215-pound receiver was a team captain for the Blue Devils and was a third-team All-ACC selection last year. He had 74 catches for 794 yards (ninth in the ACC). Bobo averaged 66.17 yards per game last year, and similar production this season would help fill the void of the Bruins' top two targets from 2021: Kyle Philips and Greg Dulcich, each of whom averaged more than 60 yards per game. - Orange County Register

Zach Charbonnet has worked to become UCLA's featured running back quickly and with a signature quiet demeanor. This fall camp, the Bruins are searching for his counterpart. "You can't put it all on Zach," running backs coach Deshaun Foster said Friday morning. "It's a two-back system, you've just got to be able to stay healthy and you don't know what's gonna happen, so I want to get everybody as much as I can." Four possibilities for the second running back spot include Keegan Jones, TJ Harden, Deshun Murrell and Kazmeir Allen, according to Foster. Harden is a freshman and Murrell is a redshirt freshman while Jones and Allen have comparable game experience. Last season, Jones averaged 7.33 yards per game in nine contests and Allen averaged 7.75 yards per game in 12 games.

Head coach Chip Kelly said he has "a lot of confidence" in Jones, and Foster spoke highly of him as well. "He's a very fast kid. Talented," Foster said. "From the south, so he has a little different work ethic than other guys. He knows that his role is going to increase, he's gonna get the opportunity. He's just really trying to make sure he makes it to that." Charbonnet, an Oaks Christian graduate who played two years at Michigan before transferring to UCLA, is working on becoming a more vocal leader. He said Friday that talking in meetings and giving presentations has helped him with that. He also, at the encouragement of quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson, helped coach a youth football camp for Native American kids over the summer. "I just had to take on a leadership role, especially this year," Charbonnet said. "Coming up for the offense and trying to lead those running backs, so that was my main point coming in this offseason was working on my leadership skills and on my vocal skills, too." - Orange County Register

  08/12/22 - Darius MuasaurSr/2024, UCLA + More +

Darius Muasau is in his first fall camp with the Bruins as well after transferring from the University of Hawaii. He left the Rainbow Warriors as the team's leading tackler in 2021 with 109 total tackles (64 solo tackles and 14 for a loss). The senior balances the ferocity of camp's daily physical regimen with film. After three to four hours of film with the team, he unlocks his iPad and starts watching even more on his own. San Francisco's Fred Warner, Indianapolis' Darius Leonard and Tampa Bay's Devin White are some of his favorites. "Just things I can get better at and just not in our own film, but also like NFL film as well," Muasau said. "I'm picking out specific things that they do in the league that I can implement to my own game." Although he spends a lot of time focusing on his own game, Muasau said there's a deep connection among the linebackers. They're always texting each other and, of course, Muasau said he's always willing to spend extra time on film with a less experienced teammate. "But it's not that I know everything. I'm still learning myself," he said. "So I'm just learning, teaching them what I know already." - Orange County Register
