There's no more pressing concern for USC at the outset of fall camp than its offensive front, and Ford is the biggest piece of that uncertain puzzle. The reviews from USC's summer workouts have been glowing, and the fact that he's already won the left tackle job is noteworthy. But outside of one spot start as a freshman, we haven't seen Ford prove anything yet. At 6-foot-6, 305 pounds, Ford looks like a prototypical mauling left tackle. USC desperately needs him to play like one come September. - Los Angeles Times

  08/04/21 - Devin AupiurJr/2026, UCLA + More +

Devin Aupiu is committed to UCLA once again. The former Notre Dame defensive end announced the Bruins as his transfer portal destination Monday night on Instagram. Aupiu was verbally committed to UCLA as a recruit until flipping his commitment to Notre Dame shortly before the early signing period in December. Then Aupiu enrolled early at Notre Dame in February. The 6-foot-5, 200-pound Aupiu opted to end his Notre Dame career early when he entered the transfer portal in late June after spending the spring semester with the Irish. Notre Dame recruited Aupiu as a three-star prospect out of Oxnard (Calif.) Pacifica. Aupiu did not play his senior season because the high school football season in California was moved to the spring due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Rivals ranked Aupiu as the No. 39 weakside defensive end in the 2021 class. 247Sports slated him as the No. 50 linebacker. - Indianapolis Star/News

  08/02/21 - Quentin LakerSr/2022, UCLA + More +

UCLA defensive back Quentin Lake missed most of spring camp but is back healthy to start for summer. Lake was dealing with a minor leg injury that kept him out of the spring showcase and the practices leading up to it. "For me, it was like a business decision," Lake said. "I didn't want to go out there and hurt myself even more." The redshirt senior made the most of the opportunity by providing guidance and advice to some of the younger players on the roster. Lake has missed time during previous UCLA seasons to deal with his health. He missed eight games in the 2019 season with a wrist injury, returning in time to play in the season finale against Cal. He worked his way back from the injury practicing with a huge wrap on his right hand, with the end balled into a club.

He was also among the players who missed games last season due to COVID-19 safety protocols. Lake will help lead an experienced secondary after taking advantage of the extra year of eligibility granted to all players as a result of the pandemic-shortened 2020 season. "It feels great to be back to how things felt two years ago," Lake said. "Obviously there's still some policies and regulations we have to follow, but it pretty much feels like things are back to normal." - Los Angeles Times

UCLA starting offensive guard Paul Grattan Jr. faces three criminal charges, including misdemeanor assault, in Pennsylvania stemming from an altercation at a bar before transferring from Villanova, The Times has learned. A UCLA athletic department spokesperson said Tuesday that Grattan remained in good standing at the school while acknowledging that athletic officials were monitoring the court case. The spokesperson also said that Grattan, a graduate transfer about to start his second season with the Bruins, remained in good standing at Villanova at the time of his departure in August. A Villanova athletic department official did not respond to repeated calls and emails seeking comment about whether Grattan faced any disciplinary action from the school as a result of the matter. - Los Angeles Times

The sophomore is one of 90 candidates for national defensive player of the year honors. It's the second watch list that Muasau has landed on this preseason. He was previously named to the watch list for the Chuck Bednarik Award, also given to the college's top defensive player. Muasau led the FBS in 2020 with 68 solo tackles and ranked fifth nationally in tackles per game (11.8). The sophomore from 'Ewa Beach, O'ahu finished an abbreviated 2020 season with 104 overall tackles, while also leading the team in tackles-for-loss (9.5), sacks (4.5), and quarterback hurries (7). - Herald Bulletin

The UCLA football program was voted to finish fourth in the Pac-12 Football South Division preseason media poll. The Bruins finished fifth in the division after a 3-4 record against conference opponents after the 2020 pandemic-shortened football season. Receiver Kyle Philips was the Bruins' lone first-team honoree for the media's preseason conference teams. Philips' 38 receptions was second among conference receivers. He finished 2020 with 370 yards and two touchdowns. Tight end Greg Dulcich and offensive lineman Sean Rhyan were voted to the second-team offense.   Notre Dame freshman defensive end Devin Aupiu announced Tuesday night that he plans to enter the NCAA transfer portal. Devin Aupiu plans to end his freshman year at Notre Dame before the football season even gets started. On Tuesday night, the freshman defensive end announced on Instagram that he has decided to enter his name into the NCAA transfer portal. Aupiu started his Notre Dame career as an early enrollee in February. His fall football season at Oxnord (Calif.) Pacifica was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Because Aupiu entered the transfer portal before July 1, he should be able to use the NCAA's new one-time transfer exception and be eligible to play immediately this fall at a different school. The deadline for football players in future years will be May 1. - Indianapolis Star/News

  06/09/21 - Jay ToiaSr/2025, UCLA + More +

Jay Toia is headed across town, going from USC to UCLA to make his college debut. For the Trojans, consider the promising freshman defensive tackle's defection a pandemic misfortune. Toia committed to USC without making any on-campus visits during the health crisis, limiting his ability to gather information about his college destination. After waffling on his decision, the four-star prospect from Simi Valley Grace Brethren High picked the Trojans and participated in spring practice … before having some regrets. The 6-foot-3, 325-pound Toia solved that issue in recent weeks after announcing his transfer from USC, visiting Michigan and UCLA. Working in the Bruins' favor was that Johnny Nansen, the defensive line coach who recruited him to USC, now holds that same post at UCLA.

Zach Charbonnet and Jordan Genmark Heath, transfers from Michigan and Notre Dame, have boosted UCLA and aim to help the Bruins 'shock the Pac-12. Toia impressed USC coaches in spring practice, putting himself in position to contribute as a freshman. During the spring, Trojans coach Clay Helton called Toia "a mountain of a man" with the "head of an elephant." "You're talking about a 300-pound man that, just, you have to double team him," Helton said at the time. "If you single him, it's a hard day." - Los Angeles Times

Michigan is in the mix for another defensive tackle in the NCAA transfer portal. USC true freshman Jay Toia, who entered the portal May 24, is scheduled to take an official visit to Ann Arbor this weekend, according to The Michigan Insider's Brice Marich. The Wolverines made a strong push for the 6-foot-3, 325-pound lineman in the 2021 class before the former four-star out of Inglewood, California signed with the Trojans. Toia, the No. 186 overall prospect in his class, per 247Sports' Composite rankings, enrolled early at USC and wrote in a post on social media that he earned all A's during the spring semester while taking reps with the starters during spring practice. However, he plans on re-evaluating his college options. - Ann Arbor News

Charbonnet, like the rest of the Bruins, arrived in Westwood with something to prove. He set the freshman touchdown record for Michigan in 2019. After getting fewer touches his sophomore year, he is looking to make an immediate impact for the Bruins. "No matter where I am, I'm always going to have that chip on my shoulder and work hard and try to outwork everyone," Charbonnet said. "I'm confident with the new additions that we've added...I think we're definitely gonna go out there and shock the PAC-12 this year." While Kelly said he needed to watch tape before assessing the team's progress as spring workouts came to a close Thursday, Charbonnet's contributions were memorable. "Zach is a guy that obviously, he moves really well for a big kid. You almost forget how big he is and what he can do in small spaces. He's a guy for us who can do a lot of things," Kelly said of the 6-foot-1, 220-pound tailback. "He's really smart. He's a really good student. He's a real student of the game. He's been a lot of fun to coach...I love coaching him on the field. He's been a real bright for us this spring." - Los Angeles Times

  05/19/21 - Ethan GarbersrSr/2025, UCLA + More +

UCLA redshirt freshman quarterback Ethan Garbers will benefit from a new Pac-12 intraconference transfer rule and be granted immediate eligibility for the 2021 season. The Corona del Mar High product, who in announcing he was transferring from Washington at the end of 2020, shared the news on Twitter saying: "Thank you! About time! #FreeMan #4sup" A UCLA spokesman told the Southern California News Group that the "paperwork may still be pending but (the program) anticipates that he will now be eligible this fall after developments (on Tuesday)."

The news comes one day after the Pac-12 Conference's CEO Group unanimously decided to eliminate the intraconference transfer rule, which means players transferring to another Pac-12 school no longer have to sit out a season. The school from which the player was transferring had the ability to waive the yearlong requirement, but Washington had refused to do so for Garbers. Quarterback Colson Yankoff, who transferred to UCLA in 2019 and has since moved to wide receiver, had to sit out a season after Washington blocked his transfer waiver. Garbers, a 6-foot-3, 215-pound four-star recruit, was an early enrollee at Washington in April 2020 and transferred to UCLA in January. - Orange County Register

The Pac-12 Conference's CEO Group unanimously decided to eliminate the intraconference transfer rule but it has no impact on UCLA quarterback Ethan Garbers' situation, following his transfer from Washington. The announcement "does not impact Garbers' situation directly," a UCLA spokesperson told the Southern California News Group. "He is still tied to the school he left with respect to his National Letter of Intent." Washington can block Garbers' transfer waiver, forcing him to sit out the upcoming season and serve one academic year in residence at UCLA before being permitted to compete.

"From my understanding with Ethan it has something to do with the national letter of intent and year of residency," Kelly explained earlier this month. "I've heard it's something Washington can waive if they choose too, but we'll find out where we land. "It would be pretty unfair if Ethan is the only kid in the country that has to sit out." Garbers was an early enrollee at Washington in April 2020 and transferred to UCLA in January 2021. - Orange County Register

  05/10/21 - Greg DulcichrJr/2022, UCLA + More +

UCLA remains steady at the tight end position, with starter Greg Dulcich coming back for another season. The Bruins have had quality play from the position for several years, but Dulcich will be the first returning starter at the position since 2018 because Devin Asiasi (2019) and Caleb Wilson (2016-18) decided to forgo their respective senior seasons to enter the NFL draft. "We use tight ends in a lot of different roles," Dulcich told reporters after Monday's spring practice. "Whether it's in-line blocking or stretching the field, I think that's what makes us a really special group." Dulcich credits coach Derek Sage for helping the UCLA tight ends reach their potential since his arrival in 2018.

"Coach Sage does a really good job making sure we are complete tight ends," Dulcich said. "We are always trying to be players that make big plays (blocking) in the run game and can be vertical threats that secondaries have to worry about." Both Asiasi and Wilson were among the team's leading receivers during their final season before turning pro. Dulcich will likely garner similar attention from NFL scouts this fall after a breakout season as a redshirt sophomore in 2020, leading the Bruins in all but one receiving category. He had 517 yards and five touchdowns on 26 catches. Only receiver Kyle Phillips had more receptions (38). - Los Angeles Times

Dorian Thompson-Robinson celebrated his birthday weekend with a vintage performance in UCLA's 34-10 victory over California. The Bruins finished 3-4, and the positive vibes disappeared as quickly as they arrived. But a few days later, Thompson-Robinson announced he would return for his senior season instead of taking a leap of faith that an NFL franchise would fall in love with his untapped potential. More than four months later, as UCLA goes through spring practices, it has become abundantly clear that Thompson-Robinson did not come back for more of the same.

During the offseason, he went to coach Chip Kelly, director of football performance Keith Belton and new quarterbacks coach Ryan Gunderson and asked them how he could be a better player and leader his last year. The consensus answer? Put your teammates above yourself. So when Thompson-Robinson was asked recently how he has improved, he sounded more like a custodian than a quarterback. "I would say the biggest thing is being a servant," Thompson-Robinson said. "Picking up bottles after practice, cleaning up the field, if there was a helmet or something left out there. Picking up shoes and making sure guys' lockers are cleaned, stuff like that. That's the biggest thing I've worked on, making sure I'm taking care of everybody but myself." - Los Angeles Times
