Rory Starkey Jr. had 113 yards receiving and a score, Ryan Cragun added 110 receiving yards with a touchdown and Pennsylvania smoked Bucknell 30-6 in its season opener on Saturday. John Quinnelly threw for 273 yards and two touchdowns and his 44-yard scoring pass to Cragun with 8:37 before halftime broke a 6-all tie and the Quakers never looked back. Quinnelly later found Starkey on a 70-yard connection to start the second half for a 23-6 lead. Danny Meuser's 4-yard touchdown run for Bucknell (0-3) with 3:29 left in the first quarter gave the Bison their only lead. Bucknell held the ball for almost eight minutes during an 18-play, 83-yard drive. Meuser finished with 90 yards rushing on 21 carries. - AP College Football

Dorian Thompson-Robinson and UCLA picked up their third win over a ranked opponent during the Chip Kelly era Saturday night. This 38-27 victory over No. 16 LSU in a nationally-televised prime-time game will have more resonance nationally. "It's really just been a long time coming for this team. It's kind of emotional," linebacker Bo Calvert said. "There's been some tough times and to just push through that, I'm really proud of our guys." The Bruins were 10-21 in Kelly's first three seasons, but have won their first two games to start a season for the first time since 2017.

Thompson-Robinson led the way. After struggling in last week's opener against Hawaii, the junior bounced back by completing 9 of 16 passes for 260 yards, three touchdowns and an interception. The Bruins' running backs averaged 7.3 yards per carry as junior Zach Charbonnet had his second straight 100-yard game with 117 yards on 11 carries and a TD. Brittain Brown added 78 yards on 14 carries, including a fourth-quarter touchdown. "If we are running the ball well, we'll stick with what's right. But I think that if you look at the play-action passes today, those were huge for us," Kelly said. "I'm happy with the way Dorian played. I think that he's going to get better each week, and that is a positive for us." One of those play-action passes led to big TD early in the second quarter as Thompson-Robinson connected with Dulcich for a 75-yard score to tie it at 7. "In big games, big players step up. Even though I didn't have many opportunities, we had to maximize those that we got," Thompson-Robinson said. - UCLA/AP College Football

Running backs Zach Charbonnet and Brittain Brown took center stage in UCLA's season-opening matinee Saturday, helping the Bruins produce a dominant 44-10 victory over Hawai'i. It was the Bruins' first nonconference victory in four seasons under coach Chip Kelly. UCLA was 0-6 in nonconference play, including a pair of losses to both Cincinnati and Oklahoma. Charbonnet rushed for 106 yards and three touchdowns on six carries in the first half of his first game as a Bruin. He carved his way through the Hawai'i defense, scoring on runs of 21 and 47 yards in the first quarter. "It was a great experience, Charbonnet said. "I've just got to give it all to my offensive line. I'm just thankful that they let me come in with open arms, and I'm just one of their brothers now."

Charbonnet's three touchdown effort has quickly placed him with elite company. He became the first Bruin since Joshua Kelley (2019) to rush for three touchdowns in a single game and the first to rush for three in the season opener since Johnathan Franklin in 2012. "He's relentless when he has the football," Kelly said of Charbonnet. "He is always running with great forward lean and it makes him very difficult to tackle. Kelly has had Charbonnet on his radar since watching him play at Oaks Christian. "He's 220 pounds. He has legit speed," Kelly said. "He's the same guy that we saw. We were just really happy when we were fortunate to get him last spring." - Orange County Register

  08/30/21 - Atonio MafirSr/2023, UCLA + More +

Senior center Sam Marrazzo did not play for the Bruins and was seen in street clothes before the game. Marrazzo missed most of spring camp and was limited throughout fall camp in August. His status was questionable for Saturday. Marrazzo suffered a leg injury in the 2020 season finale against Stanford. Jon Gaines II has gained valuable experience at center by taking first-team reps in Marrazzo's absence. Atonio Mafi made a surprise start at right guard, after Duke Clemens was listed as the starter on the 2-deep released earlier this week. "We rotated Paul (Grattan), (Mafi) and Duke," Kelly said. "So whoever started the game is inconsequential to us, but (Mafi) has done a great job in the transition from moving from defensive line to offensive line. "I thought (Mafi has) done a great job and we're excited about seeing how he continues to grow." - Orange County Register

UCLA dominated in every facet against Hawaii. Running backs Zach Charbonnet and Brittain Brown combined for 184 yards and four touchdowns, an attacking defense held the Rainbow Warriors without a touchdown until late in the third quarter, and the Bruins' special teams blocked a punt for a touchdown. Charbonnet, a Michigan transfer who had starred at Oaks Christian High in Westlake Village before spending his first two college seasons with the Wolverines, enjoyed a grand UCLA debut. His third carry went for a touchdown. So did his fourth. And his sixth. Charbonnet had run for 106 yards by then as UCLA built a 31-3 lead early in the second quarter. He would not get another carry; there was no need.

Embattled UCLA coach Chip Kelly got an endorsement from analysts Kirk Herbstreit and Matt Leinart, who suggested the Bruins are going to surprise in 2021. Charbonnet's first touchdown came after he burst untouched through a huge hole up the middle for 21 yards, his most difficult challenge eluding an official in the way. His second touchdown came on a 47-yard run in which he broke five tackles, including two from the same defender. His third touchdown came after he juked a few defenders on another 21-yard run. "He's relentless when he has the football and he's always running with a great forward lean," Kelly said of the junior who averaged 17.7 yards per carry. "It makes him very difficult to tackle. He's 220 pounds but he's got legit speed." - Los Angeles Times

Up two touchdowns in an eventual rout, Dorian Thompson-Robinson caught everyone's attention for the wrong reason. The UCLA quarterback who has yet to make it through a whole college season without injury tried to hurdle a Hawaii defender in the first quarter of Saturday's opener and was met at the summit in a cringe-worthy collision that made the smattering of fans who braved the midday sun at the Rose Bowl hold their collective breath. In a 44-10 rout full of UCLA highlights, the failed highlight was the first clip of the game Thompson-Robinson shared first on his Twitter feed. It was one of his few memorable moments in an otherwise forgettable game.

Thompson-Robinson's string of underwhelming season-opening performances continued with a mundane 130 yards and one touchdown on 10-for-20 passing, but unlike disasters against Cincinnati and Colorado in each of the last two years, the Bruins started the year with a victory. That was the only stat Thompson-Robinson was interested in as the Bruins (1-0) featured dynamic running backs Zach Charbonnet (106 yards, three touchdowns) and Brittain Brown (78 yards, one touchdown). UCLA still has a lot to prove, but its blowout victory over Hawaii on Saturday shows there's finally some hope for positive change with the program. "Do I need to play better? 10000%," Thompson-Robinson tweeted less than 15 minutes after he walked off the Rose Bowl field. "Do we have the best RB duo in the country? DAMN RIGHT. Great TEAM win! Back to the practice field." - Los Angeles Times

The mother of UCLA quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson echoed the thoughts of many Bruins fans during the first half of Saturday's game against Hawaii after Zach Charbonnet scored his third touchdown. Melva Thompson-Robinson tweeted "Thanks @UMichFootball" as Charbonnet rushed 106 yards in his UCLA debut and the Bruins rolled to a 44-10 season-opening victory at the Rose Bowl. Charbonnet - who was at Michigan the past two seasons before transferring - also became the first Bruins back since Johnathan Franklin in 2012 to run for three TDs in a season-opener. "My line put me in great situations when I did have an opportunity," Charbonnet said. "It allowed us to be one-on-one defenders, and that's all as a running back you can ask for." UCLA scored on its first five possessions and roared out to a 31-3 halftime lead as it snapped an eight-game losing streak to nonconference teams dating back to 2017.

It is also the first time that Chip Kelly has won an opener in four seasons as UCLA's coach. "We're just excited as a team. I thought our kids played with great energy," Kelly said. "There is an idea with what you think you can do in all three phases of the game (coming into the season), but until you actually play another opponent, you're not sure." Charbonnet scored UCLA's first touchdown midway through the first quarter on a 21-yard run after great blocks from the right side of the offensive line to extend the lead to 10-0. The junior's best run of the day came with 47 seconds remaining in the first quarter when he broke four Hawaii tackles before turning on the speed for a 46-yard touchdown to make it 24-3. He then went over 100 yards on his sixth carry with a 21-yard score on the next possession. - UCLA/AP College Football

  08/24/21 - Delon HurtrSr/2023, UCLA + More +

Delon Hurt has been suspended from the team due to charges filed in a sexual assault case. Hurt, a wide receiver from Servite High, has not been present during the Bruins' fall camp. "We take such allegations very seriously," UCLA said in a statement. "As such, Delon has been suspended from the team pending the outcome of legal proceedings." The news was first reported on by the Los Angeles Times. Hurt has been charged with two felonies related to an alleged incident that took place in Downey in November 2019. Hurt was charged with oral copulation and sexual battery in May. After surrendering, he entered a not plea guilty and posted $125,000 bail. There is a preliminary hearing scheduled for Thursday at the Norwalk Courthouse. - Orange County Register

UCLA quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson returned to practice for the first time since Aug. 3. He missed eight practices during the 10-day period. Coach Chip Kelly never disclosed the reasoning for the veteran quarterback's absence other than saying he was "unavailable." Thompson-Robinson did not speak with the media Friday and Kelly will not speak with the media until Sunday. The Bruins are off Saturday. "Thank you everyone for the well wishes," Thompson-Robinson tweeted after practice. "It was hard being away from the team for what felt like a month. But we're back and preparing better than ever. Game week is almost here! Love you bruin family! #GoBruins" Thompson-Robinson is among the 98% of UCLA players who are vaccinated. He returns with enough time to prepare for the season opener against Hawaii on Aug. 28 at the Rose Bowl. The Bruins' tight ends did speak highly about Thompson-Robinson after his first day back at practice. "It's like he didn't miss any practices," senior Michael Ezeike said. "He's a very well-coached and fundamentally sound individual." - Orange County Register

  08/21/21 - Kain MedranorSr/2025, UCLA + More +

UCLA linebacker Kain Medrano has made great strides during spring and fall camp, after making the transition to defense in 2020. Medrano was recruited as an athlete after playing both offense and defense at Pueblo East High in Colorado. He was listed at receiver for the Bruins upon his arrival. He made the switch to linebacker after being limited to a special teams role for the season finale against Cal in 2019. Coach Chip Kelly approached Medrano about the opportunity to make the position switch. Medrano spent time mulling over the idea and talking it over with coaches and family before making the decision. The pandemic prevented the Bruins from having a productive training camp in 2020 and forced players like Medrano to learn virtually through team and position meetings held on video calls.

He played in five of the seven games during the shortened season, producing two pass breakups and four tackles, including one for a 3-yard loss. As the Bruins continue to take precautions, the team has proceeded with a regular offseason schedule and Medrano believes he has been able to benefit from it. "It gave me reps at the position I'm at," Medrano said. "I need reps and to get connected with the defensive backs behind me and the defensive line in front of us." He was a standout throughout the spring and had a notable practice when he made two interceptions on May 14 when he jumped a route and intercepted a pass intended for tight end Mike Martinez. He also intercepted quarterback Ethan Garbers' pass in the end zone. - Orange County Register

  08/15/21 - Ethan GarbersrSr/2025, UCLA + More +

Nothing is set in stone for the UCLA football team, three weeks before the season opener against Hawai'i on Aug. 28. While starting quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson remained "unavailable" for a fourth consecutive practice, Ethan Garbers and Chase Griffin continue to battle for the backup role. Coach Chip Kelly spoke highly about Garbers, when asked about the redshirt freshman before Saturday's practice. "We had the chance to get him in for spring ball," Kelly said. "Getting that underneath him is big. He has capitalized on his reps and done a nice job fitting in."

Garbers joined the Bruins during this offseason and was officially declared eligible during the spring after transferring in after one year at Washington. Not much has changed in terms of who has the lead in the position battle with Griffin, as both quarterbacks are seeing an equal number of reps with the first- and second-team offense. What has changed is Garbers' familiarity with the playbook and his jersey number, switching from the No. 10 he wore throughout the spring and the start of summer camp. He was seen wearing No. 4 this week, which became available after quarterback Blake Kirshner decided to enter the transfer portal. - Orange County Register

While the UCLA football program lost its top playmaker from 2020, Demetric Felton, to the NFL this offseason, the Bruins have added depth and maturity to the running back room. Brittain Brown is poised to be the starting running back, after serving in a key backup role behind Felton as a graduate transfer from Duke for the 2020 season. Brown returns for his sixth season after taking advantage of the extra year of eligibility, provided by the NCAA as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. Junior Zach Charbonnet is the fresh face back in a familiar setting, after transferring in from Michigan.

Charbonnet, an Oaks Christian alumnus, rushed for 726 yards and 11 touchdowns with the Wolverines in 2019, but he saw a decrease in production in 2020 with 124 yards on just 19 carries in five games. His 11 touchdowns in 2019 set the Wolverines' single-season freshman record for rushing touchdowns. He was also named All-Big Ten honorable mention. Charbonnet is expected to complement Brown as a "1-2 punch" in a similar fashion that Brown was with Felton last season. "Coaches tell us all the time that the energy and leadership starts with the running backs," Brown said. "We have something for every situation. We got speed and power." - Orange County Register

UCLA quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson was described as "unavailable" Wednesday morning for a second consecutive practice. Coach Chip Kelly confirmed Thompson-Robinson's absence from the Bruins' first full padded practice but did not provide a reason during his semi-weekly press conference. The term "unavailable" is the catch-all term used by Kelly when answering personal questions the Bruins would like to keep in house such as an injury, an illness or academically ineligible among other situations. Thompson-Robinson is fully vaccinated.

Kelly believes his quarterback "will be ready" for the season opener against Hawaii on Aug. 28 and doesn't believe Thompson-Robinson will suffer a major setback by missing time. There's no timetable for his return. In place of Thompson-Robinson, Chase Griffin, Ethan Garbers and Chase Artopoeus shared an equal number of reps with the starting unit throughout practice. "We aren't concerned, because we aren't in a game week, about the number of reps," Kelly said. "The more they do on the field and just get the experience, the better off we will be." - Orange County Register
