  12/23/21 - Darius MuasaurSr/2024, UCLA + More +

The Hawaii Bowl was canceled Thursday on the eve of the game after Hawaii withdrew because of COVID-19, season-ending injuries and transfers. "We are disappointed our season has to end this way," Hawaii coach Todd Graham said in a statement. "As competitive as we are and as much as we want to play the game, we cannot put the health and safety of our student-athletes at risk." The game was scheduled for Friday at the Clarence T.C. Ching Athletics Complex. Hawaii athletic department spokesperson Derek Inouchi said about 30 players and staff recently tested positive for COVID-19. Cases have been surging in Honolulu for the past two weeks. Oahu's seven-day average of new cases was 11 times higher on Thursday compared to Dec. 8 Hawaii finished the season 6-8, getting into the bowl because there were no available 6-6 teams. Memphis finished 6-6. - AP College Football

  12/14/21 - Otito OgbonniaSr/2022, UCLA + More +

Top UCLA defensive lineman Otito Ogbonnia announced Monday on Twitter that he would forgo his final season of eligibility to declare for the NFL draft, potentially leaving a big hole for the team during the Holiday Bowl game later this month. A senior with one extra season of eligibility remaining because of the COVID-19 extensions granted to every player, Ogbonnia did not specifically mention the bowl game but intimated that he would sit out to "focus on my rehab for an injury that I've played with most of the season and begin my draft preparation. This has been one of the hardest decisions I've had to make, but I'm proud to say that I played in every football game in my time here at UCLA." Ogbonnia was the team's most productive defensive lineman last season, recording 30 tackles - including five for losses and two sacks - in addition to two quarterback hurries, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery. He was also the top chef on the team who routinely cooked a smorgasbord of delicacies for his fellow out-of-state teammates during Thanksgiving week. - Los Angeles Times

The Rose Bowl was chilly, and the crowd was fairly sparse. The UCLA Bruins still celebrated their regular season-ending victory over California to honor the seniors who persevered through their difficult four-year transformation into a winner. Chip Kelly warned the Bruins not to celebrate this 42-14 rout of California too much, however. Dorian Thompson-Robinson threw three touchdown passes, Zach Charbonnet rushed for 106 yards and another score, and UCLA wrapped up its first eight-win regular season since 2015 on Saturday night with 32 unanswered points against the Golden Bears.

Kyle Philips caught two touchdown passes, Greg Dulcich caught another and Kazmeir Allen rushed for a score in the home finale for the Bruins (8-4, 6-3 Pac-12), who completed their first unbeaten November since 1998. UCLA also wrapped up a share of second place in the Pac-12 South for the first time since 2014. "We just had a lot of momentum in the month of November," UCLA safety Quentin Lake said. "Tonight we held an offense who had over 600 yards last time out. We were just locked in on the ball on every play. We're happy, and let's keep this ball rolling." Chase Garbers and Christopher Brooks rushed for touchdowns for the Golden Bears (4-7, 3-5), who have seven losses for the fifth time in the mostly dismal decade since Cal fired Jeff Tedford, the winningest coach in school history. Cal officially will miss a bowl game for the eighth time in 12 years. - UCLA/AP College Football

UCLA's 62-33 win over Southern California was the most offensive of the 91 games between the crosstown rivals. The combined 95 points were the most in the series, the 62 points were most scored by UCLA against the Trojans and the most given up in a single game by the USC since 2013. The 29-point margin was UCLA's largest since a 34-0 win in 1954. - AP College Football

Dorian Thompson-Robinson romped through the Coliseum end zone during the second quarter and looked up to see a young fan in Southern California gear holding out a UCLA hat and a pen. On a day when the Bruins quarterback seized just about every opportunity, he celebrated his touchdown with an impromptu autograph. "When you see a kid just handing you a hat and a pen, you've just got to," Thompson-Robinson said. "Second nature is to just grab it. I was glad to make that kid's day." Now that's a signature win for the fourth-year quarterback and his Bruins, who are emphatically on top again in Los Angeles' crosstown showdown. Thompson-Robinson passed for 349 yards and four touchdowns while rushing for two more scores, and UCLA reclaimed the Victory Bell with a 62-33 victory over USC on Saturday.

Kazmeir Allen made two TD catches and returned a kickoff 100 yards for another score in the highest-scoring performance ever by the Bruins (7-4, 5-3 Pac-12) in 91 editions of the city rivalry game. Kyle Philips also caught two TD passes as UCLA beat the Trojans for the first time since 2018 and won at the Coliseum for just the second time since 1997. The Bruins' 62 points tied the record for the most ever allowed in USC's storied football history. "It means everything," Thompson-Robinson said. "They had our tails the last two times we played, and to really hang it up on them this time and get that win out on their turf means something special." The Bruins romped with a wealth of big offensive plays - including 11 that went more than 20 yards, a record under coach Chip Kelly - mostly created by Thompson-Robinson, who beat the Trojans as a starter for the first time in his four-year UCLA career with an afternoon of brilliance. - UCLA/AP College Football

NOV 15 PAC-12 SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Kyle Philips, RS Jr., WR/KR, UCLA (San Marcos, CA),...Second time Philips has won this award this season, also capturing it in Week Four, becoming the only player this season to win it multiple times. The last UCLA player to have multiple Special Teams Player of the Week awards in the same season was Ishmael Adams in 2014...Totaled 192 all-purpose yards during the Bruin win over Colorado, including 93 yards on a couple of punt returns. Philips' 82-yard punt return for a touchdown in the fourth quarter completed a 37-0 scoring run to end the game and marked the second scoring return of his career (last in 2019 against Washington State). It was the third longest scoring return in UCLA history (longest was 96 yards by Craig Bragg in 2004 against USC)...In addition, he had eight catches for 99 yards from his receiver spot against the Buffs to lift his career total to 151 receptions and elevate him into 7th on the all-time school list.   Zach Charbonnet had three rushing touchdowns for the second time this season, Dorian Thompson-Robinson racked up 356 yards of total offense and UCLA became bowl eligible for the first time in four years with a 44-20 victory over Colorado on Saturday night. Charbonnet had all of his scores in the second half as the Bruins rallied from a 20-7 second-quarter deficit with 37 straight points. UCLA (6-4, 4-3) is the fifth team from the Pac-12 to become bowl eligible. It is also the first time they will play in a bowl in Chip Kelly's four-year tenure. "Like I said at the beginning of the week, we still have stuff to play for and obviously the bowl game was one of them. So now we can check that off the list, but the work's not done," said Thompson-Robinson, whose 23-yard keeper midway through the third quarter put the Bruins on top for good at 23-20.

Nicholas Barr-Mira's 40-yard field goal on the last play of the first half got UCLA within 10 at halftime before it scored touchdowns on four straight drives and added another on Kyle Philips' 82-yard punt return to make it 44-20 in the fourth quarter. "We felt confident when we were in at halftime. There weren't a lot of adjustments," Kelly said. "We just had to play our game and I think all three phases really played their game in the second half." It is the second time this season Charbonnet has had three touchdowns. The junior, who finished with 67 yards on 17 carries, scored from 2 yards out on the opening drive of the third quarter to get the Bruins within 20-16. After Thompson-Robinson's score, Charbonnet ended the next two drives with TDs. - UCLA/AP College Football

Dorian Thompson-Robinson threw for two touchdowns and ran for another, Devin Kirkwood came up with a critical interception inside the final 5 minutes, and UCLA beat Washington 24-17 on Saturday night. Zach Charbonnet rushed for 131 yards and the Bruins (5-2, 3-1 Pac-12) won their second straight on the road, remaining right in the middle of the Pac-12 South Division race. Thompson-Robinson threw a 9-yard touchdown pass to Greg Dulcich for what turned out to be the winning score with 8:19 remaining, capping a 90-yard scoring drive. He also threw a 17-yard TD to Kam Brown in the first quarter and had a 1-yard TD run late in the first half.

Thompson-Robinson was 21-of-26 passing for 183 yards and added another 87 yards rushing. His last run came with 2:01 left when he sprinted 8 yards for first down after Washington used its final timeout. And when UCLA needed a big defensive play in the closing minutes, Kirkwood came through. Kirkwood intercepted Washington quarterback Dylan Morris at the UCLA 4 with 4:50 remaining. Morris had Jalen McMillian open for a potential touchdown, but didn't lead him enough and Kirkwood made an excellent recovery, juggling and then securing the ball. It was the second time Morris was picked off after getting intercepted on Washington's opening drive of the game. Morris was 20-of-30 passing for 184 yards, but the Huskies failed to rebound after losing in overtime at Oregon State two weeks ago. The Huskies (2-4, 1-2) are two games under .500 this late in the season for the first time since 2015 when Washington was 4-6 in mid-November before winning its final two games to become bowl eligible. - UCLA/AP College Football

Brittain Brown burst up the middle, lost his footing and planted his hand in the ground to keep his balance. Barely breaking stride, he kept going for a 48-yard touchdown. Disappointing he had lost a fumble earlier in the game, Brown scored the back-breaking touchdown that sealed UCLA's victory. Brown ran for 146 yards and scored a touchdown in the fourth quarter, Dorian Thompson-Robinson accounted for three touchdowns and UCLA extended Arizona's school-record losing streak to 17 games with a 34-16 victory Saturday night. "Coming off the bad play that I had, I was feeling some type of way about that," said Brown, who fumbled in the third quarter. "I knew once I got the ball, I was going to punch it whatever play coach called." UCLA (4-2, 2-1 Pac-12) relied on its ground game early as Thompson-Robinson struggled to find the mark and Brown sealed the victory with a 48-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter.

Thompson-Robinson was limited to 82 yards passing, but ran for two scores and threw for another. Zach Charbonnet rounded up UCLA's strong night on the ground with 117 yards. "We did what we had to," UCLA coach Chip Kelly said. "We finished them off." Arizona (0-5, 0-2) struggled in the red zone after moving the ball well against the Bruins and lost quarterback Jordan McCloud to a right leg injury in the fourth quarter. The Wildcats scored one touchdown in six trips across midfield - three in the red zone - and McCloud was in tears as he was helped off the field after getting twisted up in a sack. - Texas State/AP College Football

When the game was on the line, Dorian Thompson-Robinson wasn't going to allow UCLA to lose. Thompson threw a tiebreaking 75-yard TD pass early in the fourth quarter and came back from a banged-up shoulder to throw a clinching touchdown late that helped No. 24 UCLA spoil Stanford's return home with a 35-24 victory over the Cardinal on Saturday. "The one thing I don't think gets mentioned enough with Dorian is how tough he is. He's been tough from the get-go," coach Chip Kelly said. "It's an underrated quality for a quarterback to be a tough guy. I think that was on display tonight. It's something that we've known for four years now. But I think he really showed that tonight." Stanford (2-2, 1-1 Pac-12) had played its last seven games away from home because of COVID-19 protocols last season and a tough opening schedule.

The Cardinal managed to win six of those games but came out flat against the Bruins (3-1, 1-0). UCLA broke out to a 14-0 lead and then, after letting Stanford battle back to tie it, got the biggest play of the game when Thompson-Robinson found Kyle Phillips open deep over the middle for the long TD on the next play from scrimmage. The Bruins sealed the win when Thompson-Robinson threw a 5-yard TD pass to Phillips after briefly leaving the game with the hurt shoulder. "We saw him go down," Phillips said. "He was fighting a shoulder injury the whole game. He ran the ball, went down and game was on the line, came back and made a huge play. We're all just really proud of him." - UCLA/AP College Football
