  10/10/21 - Anthony WatkinsrSr/2025, Tulsa, 5-10, 197 (DS#112 RB) + More +

Anthony Watkins ran for a 44-yard touchdown with 4:28 remaining to help Tulsa beat Memphis 35-29 on Saturday night. Bryson Powers intercepted a Seth Henigan pass with 1:17 left that sealed it for Tulsa (2-4, 1-1 American Athletic Conference). Davis Brin threw a pair of touchdown passes for the Golden Hurricane. Shamari Brooks ran for 126 yards and two touchdowns. Watkins finished with 68 yards rushing. Watkins burst up the middle, breaking three tackles and carrying a fourth defender across the goal line, capping a seven-play, 78-yard drive to give the Golden Hurricane a 35-21 lead.

But Memphis (3-3, 0-2) came right back with a 75-yard scoring drive. Calvin Austin III beat two defenders and was wide open at the 2 to catch a 30-yard touchdown pass from Henigan with 3:11 left. The Tigers made the 2-point conversion and then forced a three-and-out. Lachlan Wilson's 64-yard punt made the Tigers start their final drive from their 11-yard line. Hengian converted on fourth-and-11 with a pass to Austin to get the Tigers near midfield, but he was picked off on next play. Henigan, a true freshman, was 34-of-57 passing for 463 yards and threw two touchdown passes but two interceptions. Austin caught a career-high 13 passes and finished with 200 yards receiving. - AP College Football

  08/24/21 - Tyon DavisrSr/2023, Tulsa, 5-11, 184 (DS#85 CB) + More +

A prime candidate for the University of Tulsa's breakout player of the year: cornerback Tyon Davis. Amid the unexpected offseason departures of the previous starting corners, Davis has gone from overshadowed to potential star ahead of his senior year. "I'll say this, and I said it even when the other guys were here: In that room, he was the most athletic guy," coach Philip Montgomery said. "He just had some guys with experience ahead of him." With Akayleb Evans and Allie Green IV moving on to Missouri, a lack of experience at the cornerback position has been a significant concern. Davis, who appeared in 20 games in the past two years after transferring from NEO, is ready to contribute in a larger role like his coaches expect.

"I've always had that confidence (in myself), so now for me to be able to prove (the coaches) right - that's my plan," Davis said. "It's a big deal when your coaches believe in you." Davis bet on himself coming out of Putnam West, where he racked up 100 tackles and 11 interceptions as a two-year starter. Despite success on the field, he didn't land the type of recruiting he was after. "I had small Division II offers and I knew I had the talent," he said. "I just needed a chance, and I knew NEO would do that for me." A self-described late bloomer, Davis redshirted his first year at junior college and followed with 20 tackles and five pass breakups the following season. He has played cornerback since he was a kid. - Tulsa World

  08/12/21 - Shamari BrooksrSr/2022, Tulsa, 5-08, 194 (DS#999 RB) + More +

University of Tulsa running back Shamari Brooks is back on the practice field after a knee injury sidelined him for the 2020 season, but he is being held out of contact drills as a precaution. "We're just going to be smart with him," coach Philip Montgomery said. "We know what Shamari brings to the table...He's worked out all summer and he's done all the change-of-direction things, but when you get all those people on the field and you've got traffic around you, we just want to be smart. So we're going to use him when we can and kind of bring him back in a good pace without just doing it all." Asked whether Brooks is fully recovered, Montgomery said: "I know he feels good. He feels confident in his knee. That's the most important thing. And now it's just getting back into football-type shape when it comes to cutting and changing and seeing things and having to react." - Tulsa World

  08/12/21 - Travon FullerrSr/2022, Tulsa, 6-0, 179 (DS#132 CB) + More +

Travon Fuller, a graduate transfer from Texas A&M, delivered a couple of pass breakups and an interception on the first day of practice and has continued to look solid. "We'll know more as we look at the tape, but I thought he flashed at times," Montgomery said after the first practice. "That's good to see." Fuller, who is from Athens, Texas, appeared in 43 games at Texas A&M and totaled 21 tackles. - Tulsa World

  06/26/21 - Kenney Solomon IIrSr/2024, Tulsa, 6-0, 170 (DS#999 CB) + More +

The University of Tulsa has brought in a third transfer cornerback, announcing the addition of Kenney Solomon from Tennessee to its roster Friday. Solomon, the seventh transfer to join the Hurricane since the start of the month, has three years of eligibility remaining including the extra season extended as a result of COVID-19. Listed at 6 feet and 185 pounds, Solomon played in 21 games at Tennessee, joining the team as a walk-on cornerback, ultimately getting put on scholarship and moving to running back as a sophomore. He also was a sprinter for the track team. Solomon is from Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, where he was a consensus three-star prospect and starred on offense, defense and special teams. He totaled eight interceptions in his final two years of high school and scored six touchdowns as a senior. - Tulsa World

  06/25/21 - Chris PaulrSr/2022, Tulsa, 6-4, 328 (DS#15 OG) + More +

University of Tulsa offensive lineman Chris Paul has a resume that seemingly gets longer by the day. A senior from Houston who has started 28 games in his career, Paul was recently elevated to the NCAA Division I Football Oversight Committee, which focuses on important issues at the FBS and FCS levels. Select-few administrators and coaches are on the committee along with only two student-athletes. "I feel very honored and humbled," Paul said. "Sometimes it's just like, wow, I can't believe out of the however many student-athletes they could have chosen, they chose me."

He wasn't chosen randomly. Paul has extensive credentials of leadership dating to high school, when he was his senior class president. That continued at TU, when he became active in almost every campus group possible and emerged as a top 10 freshman. "I really I don't know how it happened, but I do know that I do have a lot of passions and I want to follow those," he said. "One of my biggest fears coming out of high school and into college was that I would have to leave that sort of element of involvement." - Tulsa World

Former University of Tulsa linebacker Zaven Collins was arrested Sunday in Scottsdale, Arizona, on complaints of excessive speed and reckless driving. According to a release from Scottsdale police, Collins was driving a Mercedes that was observed going 76 miles per hour in a 35 mph zone shortly after 10 a.m. Sunday. He was pulled over, arrested and booked into jail before being released later in the day.

Collins, 22, was selected 16th overall in the NFL draft by the Arizona Cardinals in April after a stellar career for the Golden Hurricane. A Hominy native, he went from under-recruited out of high school to the nation's top defensive player last season. The 6-foot-4, 260-pound linebacker signed his rookie contract with the Cardinals earlier this month, a four-year deal with a team option for a fifth. Collins is expected to be an immediate contributor in the middle of the defense alongside second-year linebacker Isaiah Simmons. - Tulsa World

USC made its second addition to the safety position via the transfer market Thursday, landing the commitment of former Auburn safety Chris Thompson Jr. Thompson, who announced his decision via Twitter, arrives at USC with a full four years of eligibility after participating as a true freshman in the 2020 season. In his one season with the Tigers, Thompson recorded eight tackles.

  05/02/21 - *Zaven CollinsrJr/2021, Tulsa, 6-5, 259 (DS#4 OLB) + More +

Before he appeared in a college game, those within the University of Tulsa football program were predicting Zaven Collins would make it to the NFL. Continuing an extraordinary path few others could have anticipated, Collins was taken 16th overall in the NFL draft by the Arizona Cardinals on Thursday night, becoming the highest-drafted defensive player in Hurricane history. "(Hearing my name) was so emotional for me and for my mom," Collins said during a Zoom call with media. "That's what we worked for. … It's something that I dreamed of and we accomplished that tonight." Collins, a Hominy native who quarterbacked the Bucks to the Class A championship in 2016, was an under-recruited player whose only Division I offer came from the Hurricane. After redshirting his first year on campus, he became a starter because of injuries and emerged as a freshman All-American. He followed with a 97-tackle campaign as a sophomore before producing one of the best seasons in program history last year, when he was a consensus All-America selection and the nation's top defensive player. In eight games, he totaled four sacks and four interceptions, with two of those returned for touchdowns, in addition to a forced fumble, a fumble recovery and a safety. - Tulsa World

On the heels of a turnaround season, the University of Tulsa will benefit from the return of 14 seniors whose careers would have ended last year if not for the NCAA's extra season of eligibility. Starters Dylan Couch (right guard) and Keylon Stokes (receiver) are among the seniors returning on offense. Offensive lineman X'Zauvea Gadlin, who started every game in 2019, also should be back after he opted out of the season because of COVID-19 concerns. On defense, the Hurricane will have 10 starters back including five veterans who have played more than 40 games in their careers. The only playing not returning is linebacker Zaven Collins, who left early for the NFL after a junior season in which he emerged as the nation's top defensive player. - Tulsa World
