Michael Pratt threw for 326 yards and two touchdowns and ran for a third while Tulane held East Carolina scoreless in the second half en route to a 24-9 victory on Saturday. East Carolina (3-3, 2-2 American) took a 9-7 lead when Holton Ahlers found C.J. Johnson with a 24-yard touchdown with 12:08 left in the first half but had a 46-yard field goal attempt to end the first half blocked. Ahlers threw two second-half interceptions, one in the end zone, and the Pirates were stopped on fourth down twice in the fourth quarter. Pratt found Tyrick James with a three-yard scoring pass to start the second quarter and wedged in from a yard out to take a 14-9 lead at the break. He launched a 44-yard touchdown pass to Deuce Watts, who reached up to snare the ball over a Pirate defender at the 6 and bounced into the end zone with the ball held high. The win was the second straight for the Green Wave (5-1, 2-0). - Tulane/AP College Football

Third-string quarterback Kai Horton tossed a 10-yard touchdown pass to Tayjae Spears in overtime to give Tulane a 27-24 victory over Houston on Friday night in an American Athletic Conference opener. Bubba Baxa kicked a 36-yard field goal for Houston (2-3, 0-1) in the opening possession of overtime. Horton forced overtime after leading a 75-yard, 11-play drive capped by his 3-yard touchdown shuffle pass to Tyrick James that tied the game 21-21 with 39 seconds remaining. Horton, who entered having thrown just one pass this season, took over for Justin Ibieta after Tulane's first series of offense. Horton completed 11 of 21 passes for 132 yards that included a 13-yard TD pass to Duece Watts early in the second quarter. Spears finished with six catches for 85 yards and added 54 yards rushing on 14 carries.

Tulane (4-1, 1-0) jumped ahead 14-7 midway through the third quarter when Houston quarterback Clayton Tune dropped the ball while diving for extra yardage. Jadon Canady then scooped it up and ran untouched 57 yards into the end zone. It was the Green Wave's first fumble return for a touchdown since Nov. 14, 2020 against Army. Houston's Brandon Campbell bullied into the end zone from the 1 that tied it 14-14 with 10:04 remaining. Tune completed a 41-yard pass to KeSean Carter before Campbell scored three plays later. Tune's 14-yard touchdown pass to Nathaniel Dell gave the Cougars a 21-14 lead with 3:04 to play. Tune was 22-of-33 passing for 208 yards with two touchdown passes. Tulane last won at Houston on Nov. 8, 2014. - Tulane/AP College Football

Michael Pratt overcame two costly interceptions with a 4-yard touchdown pass to Tyrick James with 4:27 left and Tulane upset Kansas State 17-10 on Saturday. K-State came into the game favored by two touchdowns. The Green Wave stopped the Wildcats on fourth-and-short twice in the third quarter and again in the fourth. K-State finished 1 for 5 on fourth down. It was Tulane's first road victory over a Power-5 conference school since beating Rutgers in 2010. Rutgers was part of the Big East that season. The two teams came into the game having allowed a combined total of 22 points in two games. It was the second meeting between the two schools. Tulane came from behind to defeat K-State 20-16 in 1988, the year before coach Bill Snyder took over the Wildcats' program. Pratt was 13-of-26 passing with a touchdown and two interceptions, but came up big in the clutch for Tulane (3-0).

Adrian Martinez was 21-of-31 passing for 150 yards and a touchdown for Kansas State (2-1). Running back Deuce Vaughn was held to 81 yards on 20 carries, the first time in nine games that he's been held to fewer than 100 yards rushing. He was held out of the end zone for the first time in 10 games. Tulane grabbed the early lead on a 91-yard, nine-play drive, capped by a 1-yard run by Tyjae Spears. The Green Wave controlled the first quarter, out-gaining the Wildcats 125-46, even going against a strong wind. Kansas State tied it with 2:43 left in the second quarter on a 21-yard touchdown pass from Martinez to his former Nebraska teammate Kade Warner. That touchdown capped an eight-play, 75-yard drive. Tulane appeared to be marching toward a go-ahead score late in the quarter when Daniel Green picked off Pratt's pass at the KSU 28-yard line. He returned it 49 yards to the Tulane 23. A 22-yard field goal by Chris Tennant on the final play of the half gave K-State a 10-7 lead at the half. Tulane opened the second half scoring with a 30-yard field goal by Kriston Esnard to tie the score at 10. - Tulane/AP College Football

Michael Pratt passed for 318 yards and three touchdowns and Tulane romped past FCS-member Alcorn State 52-0 on Saturday. Tulane (2-0) used Kriston Esnard's 26-yard field and two short touchdown runs by freshman Shaadie Clayton and Lawrence Keys III to take a 17-0 lead after one quarter.   Tulane football coach Willie Fritz stopped just short of confirming what sources indicated after Saturday's 42-10 trouncing of UMass—that projected starting nose tackle Adonis Friloux is out for the year with an ACL tear. Friloux, a sophomore from Hahnville who started the final three games of 2021, was hurt in practice last week. His performance in preseason camp prompted new defensive line coach Travian Robertson to say he could dominate in the American Athletic Conference. "We think so (Friloux will miss the season)," Fritz said. "We're going to find out for sure in the next couple of days. Unfortunately that's the only part of the game I don't like. It's a tough, hard-nosed, physical sport, different than all other sports on the planet. Sometimes unfortunately this occurs." - New Orleans Times Picayune

Sam Houston State transfer Prince Pines is the biggest offensive lineman Willie Fritz has coached in seven years at Tulane. The way he has practiced the past few weeks, Fritz expects him to come up large in games, too. Pines - a 6-foot-5, 340-pound Baton Rouge product (University and Tara) - has been the first-team left guard since early in preseason camp. He is showing why he started four games as a redshirt freshman at Baylor in 2019 before heading to Sam Houston State, where he started 22 times in one calendar year after COVID-19 pushed the 2020 season into the spring 2021. He earned second-team All-Southland Conference honors that spring and first-team All-Western Athletic Conference honors last fall.

Tulane needed a blocking upgrade after struggling to protect quarterback Michael Pratt. "He can help us big time," Fritz said. "We haven't had guys with his combination of being that big and moving. He's done a great job in camp so far." Quiet on and off the field, Pines made one point loud and clear when explaining how he ended up at Tulane after first committing to Oklahoma State in the offseason. The lure of Louisiana was strong. "Family plays a huge role in everything I do, so it's great having my family be able to come see me and support me," he said. "It's definitely home. Louisiana's a part of my heart, so I'm glad to be back here and able to compete. Tulane's a great institution, so that's what caused me to move." - New Orleans Times Picayune
