Sam Houston State transfer Prince Pines is the biggest offensive lineman Willie Fritz has coached in seven years at Tulane. The way he has practiced the past few weeks, Fritz expects him to come up large in games, too. Pines - a 6-foot-5, 340-pound Baton Rouge product (University and Tara) - has been the first-team left guard since early in preseason camp. He is showing why he started four games as a redshirt freshman at Baylor in 2019 before heading to Sam Houston State, where he started 22 times in one calendar year after COVID-19 pushed the 2020 season into the spring 2021. He earned second-team All-Southland Conference honors that spring and first-team All-Western Athletic Conference honors last fall.

Tulane needed a blocking upgrade after struggling to protect quarterback Michael Pratt. "He can help us big time," Fritz said. "We haven't had guys with his combination of being that big and moving. He's done a great job in camp so far." Quiet on and off the field, Pines made one point loud and clear when explaining how he ended up at Tulane after first committing to Oklahoma State in the offseason. The lure of Louisiana was strong. "Family plays a huge role in everything I do, so it's great having my family be able to come see me and support me," he said. "It's definitely home. Louisiana's a part of my heart, so I'm glad to be back here and able to compete. Tulane's a great institution, so that's what caused me to move." - New Orleans Times Picayune

2022 PRESEASON WUERFFEL TROPHY (COMMUNITY SERVICE) WATCHLIST: Jalen Geiger, Kentucky, Jr., DB,...Geiger, a product of Columbia, South Carolina, grew up in a military family as his dad Tony was a Chief Warrant Officer (CW3) in the United States Army for 21 years with five combat deployments, while his mom Ramona retired as a First Sergeant (E-8) after 25 years of service with three combat deployments in the Army. Due to his parents' military service, Jalen attended six different schools from kindergarten through 12th grade. He knows a thing or two about what it feels like to be the new kid in class and how hard it can be to make new friends.

Because of his background, Jalen has a passion for helping elementary school-age kids not feel alone and he uses his platform as a football player to help kids in need. In 2021, he found a mentorship opportunity at Liberty Elementary in Lexington. He visited the school on several occasions, playing with the kids and talking to them about learning and trusting their teachers. He will continue that work in 2022 with plans to talk more to the kids about anti-bullying and being kind to one another. - Kentucky Football

Replacing three-year starter Yusuf Corker in the secondary is a significant challenge for Kentucky's defense, but Jalen Geiger brings plenty of experience to the starting safety spot alongside super senior Tyrell Ajian. Geiger has appeared in 20 games across three seasons for Kentucky with two starts. A year ago, he totaled 18 tackles, one tackle for loss and one interception in 12 games. He returned his interception 31 yards for a touchdown in the win over Vanderbilt.

The Columbia, South Carolina, native has already proven himself a valuable presence in the locker room as he was this summer nominated for the AFCA Good Works Team and Wuerffel Trophy, two honors that recognized community service work. Now, he is focused on replacing some of Corker's leadership in the secondary. "I think he's sort of brimming with confidence, which is good," White said of Geiger during spring practice. "He needed to. He's starting to find his voice. That's a big challenge for him: Be loud. Yusuf for three years was sort of the ultimate verbal communicator in the back half, and now we have to find sort of a new mouthpiece." - Herald Leader

Wide receiver Lawrence Keys transferred to Tulane from Notre Dame because he wanted to return to New Orleans. Safety Lummie Young left Duke for the Green Wave because he really liked defensive coordinator Chris Hampton. Already having lit up preseason drills on opposite sides of the ball, the duo stood out again on Saturday morning in a planned full-fledged scrimmage that was reduced to a lighter, more controlled affair because of a spate of injuries at cornerback.

Keys, a McDonogh 35 product who caught 18 passes in 21 games for Notre Dame before opting out of the 2021 season, accounted for 71 yards on back-to-back receptions. After a 13-yard grab, he raced past cornerback Rishi Rattan and hauled in a 58-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Justin Ibieta for the longest play of the day. Keys looks like the guy who had offers from LSU, Georgia and Texas as a four-star prospect out of high school "He's had a great camp," Tulane coach Willie Fritz said. "He didn't play last fall, so he came in in the spring and I think he was a little rusty. He's just gotten better and better throughout the summer and also here in camp. He's had nine really good practices." - New Orleans Times Picayune

2022 PRESEASON ROTARY LOMBARDI AWARD WATCHLIST: Tyler Grubbs, Louisiana Tech, So LB,...Grubbs, a two-time All-Conference USA and All-Louisiana selection has started all 22 of his games as a Bulldog and led the team in total tackles (99 and 97) in each of his first two seasons. The 247Sports freshman All-American selection finished in the top five last season in C-USA tackles per game (8.1) and also led the team in tackles for loss (10.0) while registering a season-high 13 tackles against SMU. Grubbs was also recently named first-team preseason All-CUSA by Athlon Sports and collected second-team CUSA honors from Phil Steele. The New Orleans, La., native has been one of the best linebackers in the nation since bursting onto the scene in 2020. His career mark of 8.91 tackles per game ranks second nationally among all active players. He is also among the FBS active career leaders in solo tackles per game, ranking 19th with 4.05. - Louisiana Tech Football

Valentino Ambrosio converted a 50-yard field goal with room to spare after a drive stalled during Wednesday morning's practice at Yulman Stadium. Making a kick with zero defenders on the field does not exactly prove he is the reliable kicker Tulane has been missing for several years, but his history offers powerful support. Ambrosio, a graduate transfer, hit 21 of 27 field goals in two years at Rutgers, including a 39-yard game-tying kick as the clock ticked down to zero against Maryland in 2020. It set up his 42-yard overtime winner. Both were right down the middle. "It's all about having laser focus," he said. "I've gotten a lot better at just being able to lock in and stay in the moment and do what I need to do for the team." After its struggles in game-deciding situations during coach Willie Fritz's six-year tenure, the Wave would settle for anything that nudged through the uprights.

Merek Glover, the primary kicker for the past five seasons, connected on some tying field goals in the fourth quarter but is mostly remembered for the 26-yarder he missed on the final play of regulation in an eventual overtime loss to Tulsa last year, and the 36-yarder he missed with 1:21 left in a 17-16 loss to Cincinnati in 2017. The last time Tulane hit a late game-winning kick was 2015 - the year before Fritz arrived - when Andrew DiRocco drilled a 35-yarder as time ran out to break a tie against Army. DiRocco is remembered mostly for the 21-yarder he duck hooked with 1:46 left in the Wave's 2014 American Athletic Conference debut against Tulsa, leading to a double-overtime defeat. Ambrosio, who has not won the job yet, appears to be Tulane's best hope to chart a new course. - New Orleans Times Picayune

Tulane wide receiver Jha'Quan Jackson refuses to talk about his disappointing 2021 that began with a knee injury in preseason camp and ended in a humbling, 2-10 record. He is not being belligerent. He simply wants to focus on the present and the future rather than re-live the past. "I'm excited to get back with the team," he said after Friday morning's practice, the Green Wave's first in shoulder pads. "I worked hard all summer. The standard is coming out here and competing for a conference championship. We've been going up the hill, and we are climbing each and every day trying to get one percent better." Jackson, for one, looks a hundred percent better than he did after he got hurt last August.

Coming off a year in which he tied for the team lead in receptions (31), was second in receiving yards (425) and first in touchdown catches (eight), he suffered a severe (redshirt) sophomore slump to 19 catches, 274 yards and, most painfully, one score. This, from a guy who told fans at a meet-the-team night they could call him ATM for "automatic touchdown maker." The letdown was team wide. "He had a tough season," coach Willie Fritz said. "It was humbling for everyone. I was humbled. He had injuries and fought through it all, and that happens sometimes in this game, but he's healthy and ready to go this year." - New Orleans Times Picayune

After persevering through an injury-affected 2021, Michael Pratt admitted he needed to get stronger to withstand the punishment quarterbacks receive in college. Mission accomplished. After playing at about 205 pounds at the beginning of last season, he said he weighed in at 218 on Wednesday and felt healthier than he had ever been. "My body's good," he said. "I just feel better overall." Pratt was banged up at the end of Tulane's opener at Oklahoma, injured his throwing shoulder two games later in the fourth quarter at Ole Miss and never was 100-percent healthy the rest of the way.

He also suffered a concussion on a massive hit while scrambling against SMU, forcing him to miss the next game against Cincinnati. Entering his third year as a starter, he expects to improve on his numbers from last season, when he completed 59.3 percent of his passes for 2,243 yards and 20 touchdowns with six interceptions. "The biggest thing is just the way the game slows down from year to year," he said. "It's a big adjustment from high school to college, and going into my second year things started to slow down and now it's at the point where the little things, the blitzes, all that kind of stuff, I just pick up a lot faster and it's kind of just habit at this point." - New Orleans Times Picayune

Tyjae Spears rushed for more yards in Tulane's finale against Memphis last season than any player in school history not named Matt Forte. His encore might last for all of 2022. Fully recovered from a torn ACL he suffered in Septembers 2020, Spears took a handoff from Michael Pratt during a red zone drill in Tulane's first preseason practice Wednesday morning, bounced outside, turned the corner and beat everyone to the pylon for a 15-yard touchdown. He punctuated his dash with a little jump as he approached the goal line. Twelve months after admitting he was nowhere near 100 percent physically or mentally, Spears, a redshirt junior from Ponchatoula, is in a much better head space. "Last year I still had a limp, and I'm kind of getting emotional right now talking about all the hard work I put in," he said. "I don't want to brag on myself, but it's special to be here now and to keep on elevating."

How high he can go is anyone's guess. Forte's record-shattering 2,127-yard season in 2007 is untouchable, but maybe not Mewelde Moore's second-best total of 1,421 in 2001. Spears' 264-yard outburst on 30 carries at Memphis surprised no one who had seen him run. His skill set alone could help the Green Wave put last year's dismal 2-10 record in the rearview mirror. "I'll never forget one of our first practices when I got here, he got the ball on a A-gap run (between the center and guard), took a jab step and ended up in the C-gap (outside the tackle) on the other side," said linebacker Nick Anderson, who arrived in 2019 along with Spears. "Last year around this time he was hesitant to make certain cuts, but you can see him getting back to his normal self." - New Orleans Times Picayune
