  11/29/25 - Jake RetzlaffrSr/2026, Tulane, 6-1, 205 (DS#23 QB) + More +

Jake Retzlaff ran for two short scores, setting a Tulane single-season record for touchdowns rushing by a quarterback, and the Green Wave clinched a tie for first place in the American Conference with a 27-0 victory over struggling Charlotte on Saturday night. The victory also ensured Tulane would host the American title game next week. The league uses the College Football Playoff rankings as a tiebreaker in the standings, and Tulane (10-2, 7-1, CFP No. 24) was the conference's only team with such a ranking. Tulane will host North Texas, which along with Navy finished the regular season in a three-way tie with Tulane atop the American. North Texas beat Navy this season.

Tulane's victory came as uncertainty swirled around second-year coach Jon Sumrall, who has drawn interest from Florida and Auburn, and also was seen as a potential Ole Miss candidate if Rebels coach Lane Kiffin departs for another school. Sumrall has gone 19-6 since taking over for current Houston coach Willie Fritz in 2024. He has coached the Wave to two straight conference title games. Tulane lost to Army in last season's league championship game. Tulane outgained Charlotte (1-11, 0-8) 274-72 in the first half and scored three touchdowns on 1-yard runs, the first by Javin Gordon and the next two by Retzlaff for a 21-0 lead. Retzlaff passed for 291 yards but was intercepted twice, the first time in the Charlotte end zone by Kadin Schmitz on first-and-goal from the 2. Patrick Durkin's fourth-quarter field goals of 36 and 52 yards capped the scoring. - Tulane/AP College Football

  11/22/25 - Jake RetzlaffrSr/2026, Tulane, 6-1, 205 (DS#23 QB) + More +

Jake Retzlaff passed for two touchdowns and rushed for another score, and No. 24 Tulane beat Temple 37-13 on Saturday to move one step closer to the American Conference championship game. Tulane (9-2, 6-1) can secure a spot in the Dec. 5 title game with a win over 1-10 Charlotte at home next weekend. At No. 24, Tulane was the lone American Conference representative in the latest College Football Playoff rankings. The upcoming ranking will serve as a tiebreaker for teams that have no head-to-head meetings against one another - which neither Navy nor North Texas have against Tulane. Tulane's defense limited Temple to 20 yards rushing on 20 attempts and 204 yards of total offense.

Retzlaff set the tone early, finding Shazz Preston for a 69-yard touchdown pass on Tulane's second offensive play. His 2-yard TD run midway through the second quarter lifted the Green Wave to a 17-7 lead. "To get that kind of start, it gets everyone fired up and then it gets the defense going," said Retzlaff, who was 17-for-28 passing for 231 yards on the day. Retzlaff threw a 4-yard touchdown pass to Justyn Reid and tossed to Anthony Brown-Stephens for the 2-point conversion, making it 34-13 in the fourth quarter. Temple quarterback Evan Simon was 21 for 32 for 168 yards and two touchdowns. Colin Chase had five receptions for 59 yards and a TD. The Owls (5-6, 3-4) have dropped three consecutive games. - Tulane/AP College Football

Jake Retzlaff threw two touchdown passes and ran for another score, Jamauri McClure had 94 yards rushing and a TD on 10 carries, and Tulane beat Florida Atlantic 35-24 on Saturday night. Tulane (8-2, 5-1 American Athletic Conference) is tied for second in the conference, a half-game behind Navy. After Tulane went three-and-out, Alec Clark's 53-yard punt was muffed by Easton Messer and recovered by the Green Wave's Shaun Nicholas, and on the next play Jimmy Calloway ran for a 14-yard touchdown to open the scoring with 6:38 left in the first quarter. FAU (4-6, 3-4) answered with a seven-play, 68-yard drive, but - after an illegal formation penalty nullified a Caden Veltkamp's 2-yard TD pass to Dominique Henry on fourth-and-goal - settled for a 25-yard field goal by Garrison Smith. On the first play of the second quarter, Retzlaff threw a fourth-and-6 pass to Bryce Bohanon for a 29-yard touchdown that gave Tulane a 14-3 lead.

Anthony Miller Jr. caught a 14-yard TD pass, McClure scored on an 8-yard run late in the third and Retzlaff's 1-yard touchdown run capped the scoring with 4:30 to play. Veltkamp, who finished with 375 yards passing, threw a 4-yard TD pass to Jayshon Platt on fourth-and-goal in the second quarter and Kaden Shields-Dutton capped a 17-play, 75-yard drive with a 1-yard scoring run on fourth-and-goal in the fourth. Veltkamp connected with Messer for a 12-yard touchdown and hit Asaad Waseem for the 2-point conversion to cap the scoring with 1:49 to play. Tulane's Isaiah Wadsworth intercepted a pass in the end zone with 24 seconds left in the second quarter and the Green Wave took a 21-10 lead into halftime. Tulane safety Bailey Despanie, a team captain who had a first-quarter interception, was ejected in the third for targeting. - Tulane/AP College Football

Jake Retzlaff threw for 332 yards and three touchdowns and Tulane held off No. 22 Memphis 38-32 on Friday night to stay in contention for the Group of Five's spot in the College Football Playoff and dash the Tigers' hopes. Tulane (7-2, 4-1 American Athletic Conference) survived a furious fourth-quarter comeback attempt as the Tigers fought back from a 21-point third-quarter deficit. Memphis (8-2, 4-2) was unable to convert on fourth-and-8 from the Tulane 35 with two minutes remaining, ending its chances along with its 11-game home winning streak. "I'm so proud of our guys for their resiliency," said Tulane coach Jon Sumrall. "It was so cool to see how our guys responded (after last week's loss at Texas-San Antonio). Bad things are going to happen sometimes. You just have to keep showing up."

Brendon Lewis passed for 317 yards and two touchdowns for the Tigers. Cortez Braham Jr. caught 11 passes for 113 yards. The Green Wave scored on their first play from scrimmage - a 65-yard pass from Retzlaff to Shazz Preston - and found the end zone on four of their next five possessions in the opening half. At the half, Retzlaff had completed 14 of 15 passes for 284 yards and three touchdowns. Preston had three catches for 85 yards and two scores. "I thought Jake played his tail off (in the first half)," Sumrall said. The Green Wave had 364 yards at the half, but were held to 93 in the second half. Despite the effort from the Memphis defense, it wasn't enough. "Clearly, we didn't to play to our standard in the first half," Memphis coach Ryan Silverfield said. "We gave up too many (explosive) plays. And, offensively, we had too many self-inflicted wounds. It's unlike us. Our guys will learn from this." - Tulane/AP College Football

Jake Retzlaff threw two touchdown passes in the final two minutes, the second to Shazz Preston from 26-yards out with 27 seconds left to give Tulane a 24-17 victory over Army on Saturday. Tulane tied it at 17-all with 1:54 remaining after an 11-play, 75-yard drive ended in Bryce Bohanon 12-yard touchdown catch on fourth-and-8. After Army went three-and-out, Retzlaff threw four completions and added a 10-yard run during the game-winning drive. Retzlaff's go-ahead pass was down the left sideline into tight coverage.

The defensive back batted the ball into the air and Preston bobbled it once before securing it in the end zone. Army got in position to throw it to the end zone as time ran out but Tulane batted it down. Retzlaff was 22 of 29 for 261 yards with two touchdowns and one interception for Tulane (6-1, 3-0 American). He also carried it eight times for 62 yards and another score. Preston finished with five catches for 86 yards. Cale Hellums carried 39 times for 155 yards and two touchdowns, and he threw for 125 yards for Army (3-4, 2-3).   Jake Retzlaff passed for 347 yards and two touchdowns, and the Tulane defense batted down a pass in the end zone on the final play to secure a 26-19 victory over East Carolina on Thursday night. After ECU tied it at 19-all with 5:48 left in the fourth quarter, Tulane went on a 12-play, 75-yard drive that took over five minutes of the clock. Javin Gordon caught a short pass and ran untouched into the end zone with 35 seconds left for the lead. ECU marched down the field, aided by two pass interference calls, to get to the Tulane 36-yard line. But Katin Houser’s Hail Mary pass was broken up as time expired.

Tulane (5-1, 2-0) improved to 6-2 against East Carolina (3-3, 1-1) since the programs joined the American Conference in 2014. Houser was 19 of 30 for 180 yards and a touchdown for ECU. Patrick Durkin made field goals of 30, 29, 21 and 40 yards in the first half to give Tulane a 12-0 lead at the break. ECU scored 16 straight points in the third quarter. Retzlaff threw a deep pass over the middle that Zycarl Lewis Jr. caught and scored from 63-yards out to give Tulane a 19-16 lead with 10:51 left in the fourth. - Tulane/AP College Football
