Jake Retzlaff and Zuberi Mobley each had a pair of touchdowns and Tulane held off South Alabama 33-31 on Saturday night. Mobley's 28-yard touchdown run stretched Tulane's lead to 33-17 with 10:00 left. Kentrel Bullock's 1-yard run ended a 75-drive that pulled South Alabama to 33-25 with 5:17 to play. Bishop Davenport later connected with Davin Voisin for a 26-yard touchdown pass for the Jaguars with 59 seconds left but the two-point conversion failed.

Mobley also had a 16-yard touchdown run in the first quarter for Tulane (2-0) and finished with 82 yards rushing on 11 carries. Retzlaff was 13-of-24 passing for 125 yards with one touchdown. He added 77 yards on the ground on 11 carries that included a 1-yard score. Davenport was 17-of-24 passing for 231 yards with two touchdown passes and ran for another. Jake Retzlaff passed for a touchdown and added a 69-yard scoring run in his Tulane debut, and the Green Wave rolled to a 23-3 victory over Northwestern on Saturday. Retzlaff - who won 11 games at BYU last season, but transferred after learning he faced a suspension for violating his former school's honor code - accounted for 265 yards of offense. He passed for 152 yards and rushed for 113. His numbers could have been better if not for six drops by Tulane receivers, including two in the end zone during one early drive that ended with a short field goal.

New Northwestern quarterback Preston Stone, a transfer from SMU, threw a career-high four interceptions in his Wildcats debut, including on his first pass. He also lost a late fumble. Tulane converted the first three interceptions into 17 points - starting with Retzlaff's scoring pass to Justyn Reid in the back of the end zone - while building a 20-3 halftime lead. The game was Tulane's first at home against a team from the Big Ten Conference since 1955, when the Green Wave also defeated Northwestern. The mid-day, late-August kickoff this time forced the visitors from just north of Chicago to endure the type of uncomfortably hot, humid air for which south Louisiana is known during summer. Jake Retzlaff threw for a career-high 348 yards and three touchdowns to lead BYU to a 41-13 victory over Southern Illinois on Saturday night. Retzlaff earned his first career victory as the Cougars' starting quarterback after beating out South Florida transfer Gerry Bohanon for the job in fall camp. The redshirt junior went winless in four starts last season, but helped BYU rack up 527 total yards this time around. Chase Roberts led the Cougars with 108 yards on seven catches. BYU (1-0) has not lost to an opponent outside the FBS since 1960.

DJ Williams threw for 98 yards, while adding 121 yards and two touchdowns on the ground, to lead the Salukis. Southern Illinois (0-1) failed in its bid to defeat a third straight FBS opponent. Big plays led to a big first quarter for the Cougars. Retzlaff completed a pair of fourth-down passes to set up a 1-yard scoring plunge from Hinckley Ropati on BYU's opening drive. Then he capped off the Cougars' second drive with a 57-yard strike down the middle to a wide-open Jojo Phillips that gave BYU a 14-0 lead. "Any time there is any level of success, some bigger schools will come at you and offer you some things," Pratt said. "You think the grass is always greener at other places, but just to be able to come back here with this staff again with my guys for one more year, it was definitely in my best interest to stay here with the people I know and the place where I'm comfortable." Continuity was a huge factor. After playing for a different offensive coordinator in each of his seven years of high school and college football, Pratt jumped at the chance to work with Slade Nagle again.

Technically, Nagle was not the Wave's offensive coordinator last season, but he called the plays and served as de facto coordinator until getting the job officially before spring drills. "We played to (Pratt's) strengths some times, and his strengths are he likes to run and he likes to play physical," Nagle said. Bauman's contested catch, with linebacker Eric Gentry draped over him, was initially ruled an incompletion, but a replay review showed the ball never touched the ground as the players rolled over in the end zone. The Green Wave scored 16 points in the final 4:07, the game-winning touchdown coming after they got the ball back following a safety. "I might have had a heart attack," Tulane coach Willie Fritz said moments after the game ended. Williams was 37-for-52 passing for 462 yards and a Cotton Bowl-record five touchdowns, exactly one month after the quarterback suffered a hamstring injury in USC's loss to Utah in the Pac-12 championship game that kept the Trojans from making the four-team College Football Playoff.

Tyjae Spears ran for 205 yards and his career-best fourth touchdown started the final scoring surge for the American Athletic Conference champion Green Wave (12-2), who completed an FBS-record 10-win turnaround around after going 2-10 last season. They were in the New Year's Six game as the highest-ranked Group of Five team. After Spears' 4-yard TD with 4:07 left, the Green Wave opted to kick deep instead of trying an onside kick. Mario Williams signaled for a fair catch, but fumbled the ball out of bounds at the 1. Two plays later, defensive tackle Patrick Jenkins met Austin Jones in the end zone and smothered him for a safety. Pratt completed only 8 of 17 passes for 234 yards, but had two 24-yard completions on that final drive after the safety. The first one to Bauman converted a fourth-and-10, and Deuce Watts held on despite a crushing hit from a defender that left both of them on the ground after a 24-yard gain to the 6 with 18 seconds left. After Williams followed coach Lincoln Riley from Oklahoma, the Trojans (11-3) matched the biggest turnaround in school history despite the coach's first loss in six games at AT&T Stadium.
