  10/17/20 - Gunnar WatsonrSr/2024, Troy, 6-2, 200 (DS#38 QB) + More +

Evan Legassey kicked a 47-yard field goal as time expired to give Troy a 31-29 victory over Eastern Kentucky on Saturday. Parker McKinney threw a 4-yard touchdown pass to Keyion Dixon, capping a 10-play, 80-yard drive that gave Eastern Kentucky (1-4) the lead with 21 seconds to play. Reggie Todd returned the ensuing kickoff 35 yards before Legassey kicked the game-winner three plays later. Gunnar Watson was 26-of-38 passing for 333 yards and threw three touchdown passes to lead Troy (3-1). Kimani Vidal had 143 yards rushing and a 1-yard touchdown run, and is the first true freshman in the program to record back-to-back 100-yard rushing games. McKinney was 30-of-47 passing for 370 yards and threw a pair of touchdown passes to Dixon, including a school-record 90-yard touchdown in the first quarter. Attendance was 10,500 with social distancing measures in place at 30,000-seat Veterans Memorial Stadium. - Troy/AP College Football

  10/16/20 - Gunnar WatsonrSr/2024, Troy, 6-2, 200 (DS#38 QB) + More +

Confidence and poise were two popular words used on Saturday while describing Watson's performance. "I thought he was really poised back there," said head coach Chip Lindsey. "He really made good decisions and he threw the ball with good trajectory. I thought he showed a lot of poise and confidence. I thought the longer the game went he got more confident." In Troy's loss to BYU earlier this month pressure got to Watson. Watson was sacked a total of four times and hurried three times. Against Texas State Watson had more time to move around the pocket and was not sacked. Because of that Watson believes he was more comfortable. "The more I play the more comfortable I get," Watson said. "I thought our offensive line did a heck of a job of protecting. They brought a little pressure, but I felt like I had plenty of time today to sit back there and go through my progressions."

Watson had more time preparing for this game due to the postponement of Troy's game against South Alabama. He made good use of the extra time. "It helped me prepare a lot," Watson said. "I got in the film room a lot more last week and I think everybody was ready." Despite the strong performance, Watson has already turned the page and is looking forward to his next contest against Eastern Kentucky. "It was big, but we have to put that one to bed and get on to the next one," Watson said. "It's get to get a win, but I'm looking forward to the next one and getting better this week during practice." - Troy Messenger

Gunnar Watson threw for 248 yards and two touchdowns and Troy opened its season with a 47-14 victory over Middle Tennessee State on Saturday. Watson threw both of his touchdown passes to Khalil McClain in the first half, including a 5-yarder with three seconds left before the break to lead 26-7. Three Trojans running backs scored on short runs with Troy rushing for 240 yards. Troy outgained MTSU 496-241. Troy's Will Choloh had a sack for a safety and Terence Dunlap two of the Trojans' three interceptions. MTSU (0-2) limited fan capacity to 7,000 in their 30,788-seat stadium with face coverings required. Troy will host MTSU in a second regular-season meeting on Nov. 21. A second game was slated after Troy's four originally scheduled nonleague games were canceled. It's the third time since 1999 that two Division I teams will play in the same regular season. - Troy Football

Jarrett Doege threw three touchdown passes, Leddie Brown and Alec Sinkfield gave West Virginia's running game a lift it hadn't seen in quite some time, and the Mountaineers beat Eastern Kentucky 56-10 Saturday. Brown and Sinkfield both finished with career highs of 123 yards and two rushing TDs in the Mountaineers' season opener. It marked the first time that two West Virginia players went over 100 yards in the same game since the 2017 season. West Virginia did not have a single 100-yard rusher last season and averaged just 73 yards per game as a team, the third worst in the Bowl Subdivision.

West Virginia overcame the suspension earlier in the day of 11 players for reasons that were undisclosed and not related to the coronavirus pandemic. Ten of those players were on offense, including starters at wide receiver and on the offensive line. With only family members of the players and essential staff allowed in the stadium due to the pandemic, West Virginia's players fed off of their own energy. The Mountaineers compiled 624 yards of offense against the Championship Subdivision Colonels (0-2). - West Virginia/AP College Football

After weeks of competition, West Virginia University football coach Neal Brown finally made the call in the battle to be his starting quarterback. Brown announced during his weekly radio show Thursday that junior Jarret Doege would start under center when the Mountaineers open their 2020 season Sept. 12 versus Eastern Kentucky (noon, FS1). Doege emerged as the winner of a two-man race between him and Austin Kendall, the Oklahoma transfer who started the first nine games of 2019. "We had a long quarterback battle and we really feel like we have two quarterbacks on our roster that can win Big 12 games right now, which I think is a huge positive," Brown said. "We hoped the competition was going to go through the spring and we would be able to name a starter a little earlier but it didn't work out that way."

Doege, a transfer from Bowling Green, started the final three contests for the Mountaineers last season, leading WVU to Big 12 road victories at then-No. 24 Kansas State and at TCU, which was fighting for bowl eligibility in that game. Those were sandwiched around a 20-13 home loss to No. 22 Oklahoma State. In four appearances, Doege hit on 79 of 120 passes for 818 yards, seven touchdowns and three interceptions. He threw for 4,041 yards and 39 scores in two seasons at Bowling Green. - Charleston Gazette-Mail

  09/05/20 - Asa MartinrSr/2024, Troy, 5-10, 199 (DS#102 RB) + More +

When the sophomore - a rare two-time FBS transfer (Auburn to Miami to Memphis) - takes the field for the first time as a Tiger, it will be his first game action in almost two years. Although he's listed as the No. 2 running back on Silverfield's Week 1 depth chart (behind Clark), Jeremy Perkins (who coached Martin at Austin High School in Decatur, Alabama) said he's got enough versatility to fill a number of roles. Which is a good thing because the Tigers planned to use Gainwell as more of an all-purpose back than they did a year ago. "I think Memphis got a steal with him," Perkins said of the former Alabama Gatorade Player of the Year and Mr. Football. "For us, he returned kicks, split out and played some receiver. He was our main running back. He even played some wildcat quarterback. He has great hands, great vision and is very explosive." - Memphis Commercial Appeal

  08/24/20 - Gunnar WatsonrSr/2024, Troy, 6-2, 200 (DS#38 QB) + More +

Troy went through its second scrimmage of the fall Saturday morning at Veterans Memorial Stadium exactly two weeks out from its season opener against Louisiana-Monroe. The Trojans ran around 125 plays on the day, and head coach Chip Lindsey named sophomore Gunnar Watson the starting quarterback following the scrimmage. "Throughout the whole camp and preseason practice (Gunnar) has been the most consistent quarterback," Lindsey said following the scrimmage. "Gunnar has to do a good job to keep that spot but we will go with him in game one as our starter." Watson took all of the snaps with the No. 1 offense Saturday and led several scoring drives including a textbook back shoulder touchdown pass to Kaylon Geiger. "I'm excited and ready to play some ball," Watson said. "(Being named the starter) gives you a little more confidence and gets you going to lead the team." - Montgomery Advertiser

Carlton Martial spent the 2017 season, his first at Troy, as a walk-on. He redshirted that season. Former Troy football head coach Neal Brown said in 2018 that Martial does not have "prototypical size or speed" for a middle linebacker, "but all he does is make plays." Brown put Martial on scholarship just before the start of the 2018 season. "If you look back at that young man's history, he has achieved," former Troy defensive coordinator Vic Koenning said in 2018. In 2018, Martial recorded 76 total tackles (33 solo, 43 assisted) as a redshirt freshman. Martial also had three sacks and three forced fumbles. It earned him a spot on the 2018 Football Writers Association of America's Freshman All-America Team. Troy went 10-3 overall and 7-1 in the Sun Belt Conference in 2018. - Montgomery Advertiser
