  09/28/20 - DWan MathisrSr/2025, Transfer, 6-5, 200 (DS#999 WR) + More +

Georgia stated freshman quarterback D'Wan Mathis, but he was pulled in the second quarter after going 6-of-13 passing for 37 yards with an interception and also having some mental errors. Smart brought in Stetson Bennett, who jump-started the offense and finished the day 20-of-29 passing for 211 yards and two touchdowns. "We were on the headphones and we talked, "Smart said. "We were struggling and we didn't have a lot of rhythm. Felt like we needed to change things up. I don't know how many drives we were into, played five maybe six, however many it was, before we went to Stetson. I thought he would give us some energy.

"There are things he can do well. He is different than D'Wan. He has experience and he gave us a spark. That helped us out. He was very decisive with the ball and makes good decisions. He understands what the defense is trying to do to him. "I think getting to watch a little bit of the game helped him. Right now, going forward, we will decide how we go forward. We will go back and watch the tape. "Not all those things that went wrong were D'Wan's fault. I know a lot of people blamed D'Wan or whatever. But at the end of the day it is on all of us to get right. Not all of those were bad decisions. Not all of them were bad throws. He made some good throws. But we have got to get better that's for sure." Georgia had over 90 yards of penalties in the first half, but none in the third quarter and ended with 12 penalties for 108 yards. - Northwest Arkansas Times

  09/26/20 - Chaz Ah YourSr/2025, Transfer, 6-1, 220 (DS#999 OLB) + More +

BYU junior defensive back/linebacker Chaz Ah You is out for the remainder of the 2020 season due to an injury. The former four-star prospect had surgery on what a BYU spokesperson called a "preexisting injury" on his lower leg. During BYU's spring practices this past March, Ah You had surgery on a shoulder injury that he suffered during a game last season. Ah You is considered one of the top playmakers on a BYU defense that allowed only three points against the Navy Midshipmen in a 52-point victory for the Cougars. - KLS Sports

Mathis, an early enrollee in January 2019, had a health scare after spring practice in 2019. He experienced severe headaches and underwent emergency surgery to have a cyst removed from his brain. Doctors allowed Mathis to return to practice on a limited basis late last season, and in May he was fully cleared for practice. "[Mathis] has been through so much," Smart said. "He's a bright-eyed, talented kid. There are a lot of guys who have confidence in D'Wan." Pittman was Georgia's offensive line coach the previous four seasons, so he knows Mathis on a personal level. "We know what kind of arm he has," Pittman said. "But he would be maybe a little bit more of a dual threat, because he certainly can run. "He can actually fly. He's really fast, and to be honest with you, I'm really excited if he plays against us. I'm excited for him. Because he had surgery that might not have allowed him to play. He's come a long way. Certainly we're not wanting to play against him because he's such a talented young man. But I'm certainly thrilled that he has been cleared and is ready to get his football career back on course. A wonderful kid."

When Georgia's workouts were shut down in the spring because of the coronavirus pandemic, Mathis stayed in Athens to continue training and be supervised by the team's medical staff. "He has a powerful arm, has a great spin on the ball," Georgia wide receiver Kearis Jackson told reporters Monday when asked about Mathis' passing ability. "I know this offseason we took it extra serious about getting the extra throws in, getting that chemistry right. "This offseason, all the quarterbacks threw well, but D'Wan's speed and stuff is very special for him to be able to have an arm and the speed as well. He will be a weapon." - Northwest Arkansas Times

  09/22/20 - Myles SlusherrSr/2025, Transfer, 6-0, 195 (DS#999 CB) + More +

Three true freshmen made a sizable impression on Arkansas' coaching staff during preseason practices. Defensive backs Khari Johnson and Myles Slusher, and tight end Blayne Toll were among the biggest movers in the Razorbacks' group of newcomers. On Monday, they were listed in Arkansas' two-deep depth chart for Saturday's season opener against No. 4 Georgia. Slusher, who was once an Oregon commit and an early enrollee at Arkansas, called Pittman the night before National Signing Day in December to inform him he would be joining the Razorbacks. Pittman was thrilled to land the No. 5 safety in the country, according to 247 Sports, after also pursuing him at Georgia. Slusher, a star at Oklahoma high school football power Broken Arrow, has apparently wasted little time in his quest to see the field from the jump. "Slusher has been a mature, athletic guy ever since he walked in the door," Pittman said. "I'm really, really excited about his future here. He's a physical player. Very knowledgable and well coached out of high school. "And he's got speed. Those things are certainly why he's in our two-deep." - Northwest Arkansas Times

Mathis' path to potential starter for the Bulldogs is rather remarkable. Last spring, headaches and sinus pain nagged the quarterback. Following checkups and X-rays, doctors found a brain cyst that required Mathis to undergo emergency surgery. Pittman said he does not particularly want to face Mathis because he brings valuable traits to the Bulldogs' offense. At the same time, he would be excited for Mathis if he does play. "We know what kind of arm he has," Pittman said. "But he would be maybe a little bit more of a dual threat because he certainly can run. He can actually fly. He's come a long way. "I'm certainly thrilled that he has been cleared and is ready to get his football career back on course. He's a wonderful kid." - Northwest Arkansas Times

SEPT 21 BIG 12 NEWCOMER OF THE WEEK: Shane Illingworth, QB, Fr., Oklahoma State,...Entering the game in the third quarter, Illingworth became the first true freshman to quarterback the Cowboys in his first career game since Wes Lunt in 2012.   Chuba Hubbard was limited to 35 yards in the first half but scored on a 3-yard run on the first play of the fourth quarter to lift No. 11 Oklahoma State to a 16-7 victory over Tulsa in the season opener for both teams. Trailing 7-3 late in the third quarter, Oklahoma State offense received a big offensive spark when the Cowboys' third quarterback, true freshman Shane Illingworth, entered the game and immediately connected on his first three passes, including the two longest plays of the day, hitting Tylan Wallace for receptions of 36 and 29 yards. Illingworth completed 4 of 5 passes for 74 yards in just over a quarter of work, helping Wallace end up with four receptions for 94 yards. Freshman Alex Hale made three field goals, two in the fourth quarter, from 27, 40 and 29 yards.

For Tulsa, Zach Smith completed 18 of 28 passes for 164 yards and one touchdown, a 16-yard toss to Josh Johnson with 1:38 left in the first half that put the Golden Hurricane up 7-3. The game took place a week after it was originally supposed to, with Tulsa requesting it be rescheduled to better prepare for the season after missing nine days of practice earlier in camp due to several players testing positive for the coronavirus. Smith was one of the players that had to be quarantined and would not have been able to play if the game was held as scheduled last week. - Oklahoma State/AP College Football

Kirby Smart will begin his fifth Georgia season with only the fourth different starting quarterback during his time as head coach. Whether it's D'Wan Mathis or J.T. Daniels that gets the nod, Smart wasn't ready to say Tuesday evening. The choice is down to Mathis, the dual-threat redshirt freshman who has appeared to surge, and Daniels, the former five-star Southern Cal transfer, after Wake Forest graduate transfer Jamie Newman opted out two weeks ago. "As far as we can tell, it will probably be a gametime decision," Smart said. Georgia opens the season Sept. 26 at Arkansas. "We talk about it a lot with our players to make sure they understand where we are," he said. Hundreds of Magill Society donors and former lettermen were on hand in an otherwise closed third preseason scrimmage Saturday where Mathis got most of the first team snaps. Daniels was limited to situational work, which led observers to conclude that Mathis may be ahead. "They certainly have a right to," Smart said. "It doesn't concern me. It was part of the rotation as far as each day. It just so happened they were there that day." - Athens Daily Banner

  09/04/20 - Arik GilbertrSr/2026, Transfer, 6-5, 275 (DS#999 TE) + More +

During an LSU football practice early last week, Arik Gilbert sprinted off the line of scrimmage for a vertical route. The Mike linebacker dropped into man coverage, but Gilbert ran past him down the middle of the field. He caught a touchdown, the kind of play that destroys defensive morale. Gilbert, a freshman, has brought a new element to LSU's tight end position. He has the body of a traditional tight end, but he runs like a wide receiver. He can chip defensive ends and block linebackers, but he has the skillset to play either outside receiver position.

Gilbert, whose first name is pronounced like "Eric," has already received praise during preseason practice. At 6-foot-5 and about 250 pounds, coach Ed Orgeron said LSU can use Gilbert in similar fashion to former Detroit Lions wide receiver Calvin Johnson, a 6-foot-5, 237-pound athletic marvel who made four All-Pro teams and twice led the NFL in yards receiving. "Arik is the tight end we've been looking for to stretch the field," Orgeron said. Gilbert's arrival helped LSU change the tight end position, a transformation in the works since LSU installed its run-pass option offense. After years of mainly using tight ends as blockers along the line of scrimmage, LSU has recruited tight ends who double as wide receivers. - Baton Rouge Advocate

  08/28/20 - Demarkcus BowmanrSr/2025, Transfer, 5-10, 193 (DS#999 RB) + More +

Dabo Swinney hesitated to make the comparison, knowing that it would create lofty expectations for his new running back duo. But Clemson's head coach had to be honest. After watching freshman running backs Demarkcus Bowman and Kobe Pace practice during fall camp, Swinney couldn't help but think about another running back tandem that used to make plays on the Tigers practice field. "I hate to say it, but it's just kind of what you think about...for Clemson people it's the best way to describe it. It's like thunder and lightning all over again," Swinney said. James Davis and C.J. Spiller earned that nickname while establishing themselves as the best running back duo in school history when they played together from 2005-08. Davis (thunder) was a bigger back at 210 pounds, who did most of his damage between the tackles. He finished his career with 3,881 rushing yards, which ranks third all-time at Clemson.

Spiller (lightning) was a smaller back who preferred running around defenders or juking them as opposed to running between the tackles. He finished his career with 3,547 rushing yards, which ranks fourth all-time in school history. It remains to be seen if the new duo of Pace (thunder) and Bowman (lightning) can create a similar kind of lethal backfield, but Swinney loves their potential. "You've got Kobe Pace who is this big, strong, physical powerful runner. And then you've got Bowman who can just absolutely fly," Swinney said. "They're complete polar opposites but both really, really, really good football players. So I'm excited about what they both bring to the table." Bowman was the higher-rated of the two coming out of high school. - The State

  08/20/20 - John OlmsteadrSr/2025, Transfer, 6-5, 294 (DS#999 OG) + More +

Notre Dame sophomore offensive lineman John Olmstead has put his name into the transfer portal, the former four-star recruit announced via Twitter on Wednesday. The 6-foot-5, 283-pound Olmstead did not disclose why he's looking to transfer. But he did not see the field as a freshman in 2019 and struggled to find his place on the depth chart. Jeff Quinn's first full recruiting class as Irish offensive line coach came in Olmstead's 2019 cycle. Olmstead, recruited out of Metuchen (N.J.) St. Joseph, enrolled a semester early with his fellow three offensive line signees: Quinn Carroll, Andrew Kristofic and Zeke Correll. Offensive guard Hunter Spears also signed with Notre Dame that class but as a defensive tackle before switching positions. Rivals ranked Olmstead as its No. 15 offensive tackle and No. 118 overall player in the 2019 class, while 247Sports pegged him No. 35 at that same position and No. 377 overall. - South Bend Tribune

Plenty of question marks remain around Pitt's 2020 season. But at least one was answered Friday afternoon. Pitt quarterback Joey Yellen, who transferred in from Arizona State in January, has been granted immediate eligibility by the NCAA, per a team spokesperson. The Athletic's Bruce Feldman first reported the news. Yellen, a redshirt freshman, will compete with Nick Patti and Davis Beville to be senior Kenny Pickett's backup, with an eye looking toward the Panthers' 2021 starting job. - Pittsburgh Post Gazette

  07/24/20 - Arik GilbertrSr/2026, Transfer, 6-5, 275 (DS#999 TE) + More +

Football player Arik Gilbert and basketball player Paige Bueckers have been named national high school athletes of the year. Gilbert of Marietta, Georgia, is the first tight end to win. Bueckers of Minnetonka, Minnesota, is the first female basketball player to win since 2014. The coronavirus kept them from attending the annual dinner in Los Angeles. Instead, sponsor Gatorade arranged with their families to surprise Gilbert and Bueckers with videos in which pro athletes told them they'd won. They received their trophies at the same time. Gilbert adds his name to a list of past boys' winners that includes LeBron James, Dwight Howard, Matt Barkley and Garrett Gilbert.

"It means so much to me just knowing the names that are on that list and knowing I'm up there with all of those greats,” he said by phone. "It's really like amazing to me. It makes me want to work to be on that level." Gilbert led Marietta High to a 14-2 record and a victory in the Georgia Class 7A state championship game, the school's first title in 52 years. He's ranked as the nation's No. 1 player at his position in this year's class by ESPN and Rivals. He had a 3.14 GPA and founded a campaign that urges students to have device-free conversations and supports diversity and inclusion. - AP College Football

  07/18/20 - Junior UzeburSr/2025, Transfer, 6-6, 330 (DS#999 OT) + More +

Despite the issues West Virginia University's football team had on its offensive line in 2019, there was one big, shiny bright spot - left tackle Colton McKivitz. He was the Big 12 Co-Offensive Lineman of the Year and found his name on multiple All-America lists. And now he's gone, drafted by the San Francisco 49ers. So the anchor of the WVU offensive line, the starter at a crucial position, has departed. Can the Mountaineers replace him? That remains to be seen, but someone will have to step up into that starting spot. The player likely to get first crack at it is Junior Uzebu. After one of the few spring practices the Mountaineers could hold before COVID-19 sent everyone home, WVU coach Neal Brown mentioned Uzebu's improvement throughout the offseason. "He doesn't get talked about," Brown said, "but it's kind of his time to kind of show up and be a guy we think he can be."

Right now, his potential at left tackle is just that. McKivitz earned those postseason honors in part because he barely came off the field. Of WVU's 801 offensive snaps last season, McKivitz played in all but nine. Uzebu played in those nine, seven of them against Oklahoma. Uzebu looks the part, standing at 6-foot-6 and 298 pounds. He was well regarded coming into WVU, a top-50 national tackle prospect. Brandon Yates also earned some offseason plaudits from Brown and should compete for that starting spot. But Yates redshirted last year and the next snap he takes in a game will be his first. So by virtue of his limited experience, Uzebu should get the first chance to earn that No. 1 spot. - Charleston Gazette-Mail
