D'Wan Mathis is officially in the NCAA transfer portal, giving other programs the ability to contact the Georgia quarterback about continuing his college football career elsewhere. The news about Mathis moving on broke Saturday night before Georgia's game against South Carolina when he wasn't on the trip. "He didn't want to be a distraction for the team and he was very hurt and disappointed things came out before the game," coach Kirby Smart said Monday. "That bothered him...He wanted it to come out today when he entered the portal." Mathis, a redshirt freshman from Belleville, Mich,, started the season opener at Arkansas after grad transfer Jamie Newman opted out in the preseason. Mathis struggled in the game and was replaced by Stetson Bennett who helped rally Georgia to the win.

Bennett held the starting job for the next five games, but Southern Cal transfer JT Daniels replaced him against Mississippi State and has a strong hold on the job after wins the last two weeks. "D'Wan is a great quarterback and we really will miss D'Wan," defensive lineman Travon Walker said. "JT just stepped into the role at a time he really needed to and helped the team out a loud. It's really hard at the quarterback position to be able to get that chance. You've just got to take advantage of the chance that you do get." Quarterback D'Wan Mathis, who opened the season as No. 11 Georgia's starter, has entered the NCAA transfer portal. Coach Kirby Smart said Monday he wanted Mathis, a redshirt freshman, to continue his career at Georgia, where JT Daniels has emerged as the starter. "I am excited to see his future," Smart said of Mathis. "He's going to be a really good football player. We want him to stay here. There's no doubt we want him to stay here. We have encouraged him to stay here. But I also respect that is his decision, and we are going to help him every way we can with a transition. I think he's got a bright future."

Mathis, a redshirt freshman, was not with the Bulldogs for Saturday's 45-16 win at South Carolina on Saturday. That led to questions that Mathis might enter the transfer portal as the Bulldogs prepare for this week's game against Vanderbilt. Smart said Mathis "has handled everything first class." "Every conversation he's had with me has been the right way," Smart said. "He did not want to be a distraction for the team, and he was very hurt and disappointed that things came out before the game. Oklahoma State will be without backup quarterback Shane Illingworth on Saturday when the Cowboys face Texas Tech at 11 a.m. at Boone Pickens Stadium. Illingworth has tested positive for COVID-19, a source with knowledge of the situation told The Oklahoman. As a result of the positive test, Illingworth must be isolated for 10 days. OSU's true freshman quarterback relieved injured starter Spencer Sanders midway through the first quarter and completed the Cowboys' only touchdown drive, with a 15-yard touchdown pass to Logan Carter. Sanders returned for the fourth quarter, but in between, Illingworth completed just two of 15 passes for 32 yards. Illingworth's numbers were a ghastly 5-of-21 for 71 yards. Arizona State sophomore tight end Nolan Matthews has announced his plans to enter the transfer portal. He was one of only six Power Five true freshman tight ends to play 200-plus snaps. Like FAU, USF leaned on its rushing attack under Taggart - especially during his last two and most successful seasons with the Bulls. USF averaged 45.7 carries in 2015 and 43.6 rushing attempts in 2016 compared to passing attempt averages of 23 and 27.5, respectively. FAU has averaged 43.3 rushing attempts to 21 passing attempts through its first five games. Taggart even sees similarities between Posey and the starting quarterback during his last two seasons with the Bulls, Quinton Flowers. Taggart coached Flowers at USF from 2014-16, with Flowers rushing for 2,521 yards for 30 touchdowns on 389 carries from 2015-16 and being named the AAC Offensive Player of the Year in 2016.

While Posey has only played two games at quarterback in his collegiate career, he's displayed speed and shiftiness as a runner similar to Flowers. "They're very similar," Taggart said. "Just watching those guys runs, they're just different with the football in their hands. It's hard to tackle them. Those guys just make things right. They're a joy to watch and highly competitive." Posey, who replaced Nick Tronti as the starting quarterback against FIU, led FAU to season highs of points, touchdowns and yards against the Panthers (0-4, 0-2). He broke the program's single-game record for the most rushing yards by a quarterback with 182 on 18 attempts to go along with 10 of 16 passing for three total touchdowns (two passing and one rushing). - Sun-Sentinel

Freshman Javion Posey passed for 203 yards and rushed for a 70-yard touchdown to help Florida Atlantic beat Massachusetts 24-2 on Friday night in the first meeting between the schools. FAU (5-1) scored the first 21 points before Tanner Davis blocked a punt, resulting in a safety for UMass late in the third quarter. BJ Emmons scored on a 1-yard run and Nick Tronti connected with Brandon Robinson for a 13-yard score. Vladimir Rivas capped the scoring with a 30-yard field goal. Posey completed 13-of-27 passes and carried it 19 times for 90 yards in his second career start. Last week, he passed for two touchdowns and set a program record for rushing yards (182) in a game by a quarterback. TJ Chase caught four passes for 79 yards for FAU. Javion Posey ran for 140 yards and accounted for three touchdowns to lead Florida Atlantic to a 38-19 victory over Florida International on Friday night. Posey, a redshirt freshman from Greenville, Alabama, also set the program's single-game yards rushing mark for a quarterback. He had runs of 28 and 36 yards that led to scores, and finished with 117 yards in just the first half. Posey's 11-yard touchdown pass to LaJohntay Wester and a 5-yarder to Brandon Robinson helped FAU (4-1, 4-1 Conference USA) build a 24-10 halftime lead.

He added a 2-yard TD run late in the fourth quarter, and finished 10-of-16 passing for 80 yards. Malcolm Davidson had a 37-yard touchdown run and James Charles ran for a 32-yard score for the Owls. D'vonte Price broke loose for a 77-yard touchdown run for FIU (0-4, 0-2). Price carried the ball 26 times for a career-best 178 yards. Mourning's first college football season will be a baptism by fire, because he will be thrust into a playmaker role immediately, when it could've been a year to study veterans Colin Schooler and Tony Fields, but the uncertainty of the Pac-12 season steered Arizona's defensive leaders to the Big 12. Schooler and Fields were the bulk of Arizona's tackles over the last three years, combining for 600 in 37 games. Arizona already lacked depth at linebacker before the departure of Fields and Schooler, but now? It's gotten to the point where walk-ons are going to appear on the Wildcats' weekly depth chart.

Here's one note that bodes well for the 6-3, 229-pound Mourning: Schooler and Fields were leaders of an Arizona defense as freshmen in 2017 and started every game since their college debuts. In a perfect world for Arizona, Schooler and Fields would've mentored young inside linebackers like Mourning and Derrion Clark, but 2020 has relentlessly proven that circumstances can quickly change. Playing alongside team captain Anthony Pandy, Mourning will have no other choice but to become a tackling machine this season, if the Wildcats have plans to progress as a defense despite their personnel losses. - Arizona Star News

Oklahoma State has been relying on backup quarterback Shane Illingworth after starter Spencer Sanders left the Cowboys' season opener with an ankle injury. Sanders is now healthy, but it's unclear what Oklahoma State will do with its quarterback position this weekend. "We're alternating reps," Gundy said. "We might play both. I'm not sure right now. We continue to give them quality work. Spencer is healthy, and obviously Shane has played pretty good. "We're in pretty good shape at the quarterback position." Illingworth is completing 73.5% of his passes for 483 yards, three touchdowns and an interception. Sanders threw for 2,065 yards, 16 touchdowns and 11 interceptions last year as a freshman. Former ASU quarterback Joey Yellen got the start for Pittsburgh Saturday afternoon, subbing for injured starter Kenny Pickett. He completed 22 of 46 tries for 277 yards and one touchdown in a 31-19 loss to No. 13 Miami. Yellen served as backup to Jayden Daniels last season but played in only one game, that coming against USC when Daniels was injured. He transferred to January in search of more playing time. Adding a twist to his first start at his new school, it came against Miami, which is where Yellen's former quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator Rob Likens is now serving as wide receivers coach. ASU assistant coach Trey Anderson, who works with quarterbacks, told his players before they headed out to practice that their former teammate was going to be starting. Trent Bourguet, Jayden Daniels' backup, texted Yellen to wish him good luck and got a return text after the game. "We're all really happy for him," Bourguet said. - Arizona Republic

It is time for Kentucky football fans to learn how to pronounce freshman running back JuTahn McClain's first name. It's "juh-TAWN" with the emphasis on the second syllable and the first syllable pronounced like "Justin." During UK's coronavirus-shortened spring practice, McClain opened his first interview session with local reporters by asking they clarify the pronunciation. After recording his first career carry in the fourth quarter against Mississippi State, McClain is poised to have his name called more frequently moving forward. "It's kind of like one of those things we always talked about with Benny (Snell)," UK offensive coordinator and running backs coach Eddie Gran said of McClain this week. "When a player comes in and asks, 'Coach, why am I not playing?' you pop on the film and say, 'Make me play you.' This young man is going to make me play him. A lot like Benny. Here we are going into our fourth game and the kid is ready. He's ready to go."

McClain was one of the most consistent targets of praise from UK coaches during preseason practices, but the Wildcats were loaded with returning contributors at his position. Now three games into the season, sophomore running back Kavosiey Smoke is out with a broken rib. Senior starter A.J. Rose and sophomore Chris Rodriguez are available but both dealing with minor injuries, UK coach Mark Stoops said on his radio show Monday. "JuTahn will get a few carries this week for sure," Stoops said. "He's just one of those guys that just has such a strong attitude. His attention to detail for a young player is through the roof. Clemson freshman running back Demarkcus Bowman has put his name in the transfer portal. Team spokesman Ross Taylor said Thursday that Bowman talked with Clemson coaches about his desire to transfer. Bowman is a 5-foot-10, 190-pound tailback from Lakeland, Florida, who was rated a five-star recruit who enrolled early and was part of the Tigers' spring practice, cut short last March with the school's shutdown due to the coronavirus pandemic. Clemson coach Dabo Swinney compared Bowman's speed and ability with that of former Tigers and NFL runner C.J. Spiller. Bowman ran for 5,081 yards with 71 touchdowns during his high school career.
