Rangy and athletic at 6-2, 185, Townsel played in all but one game and started four, often showing a maturity beyond his years. "A lot of these young guys have gotten a lot of reps and experience, kind of learning after being thrown into the fire, and Townsel is certainly one of those guys," Scott said. "I think this year has been a great learning experience for him. He's had to play all three of our safety positions and has often had to contribute on special teams, and he has stepped up every time. He still has some things to learn, but we believe he's going to be a great player for us." Townsel, a three-star recruit from Deerfield Beach, finished with 32 tackles and an acrobatic interception in the end zone at Cincinnati. - Tampa Tribune

  12/11/20 - Arik GilbertrSr/2026, Transfer, 6-5, 275 (DS#999 TE) + More +

Star LSU tight end Arik Gilbert has officially opted out of the rest of the season, Tigers coach Ed Orgeron said. Orgeron told reporters in Wednesday's weekly Southeastern Conference teleconference that Gilbert met with him yesterday and told him that he intends to opt out of the rest of the season. "Arik and I had a good conversation yesterday. He told me his was opting out. He said his body was hurting and he had some things he had to take care of." Orgeron said Gilbert did not tell him if he planned on returning to the team next season, but the head coach said he will pursue keeping the true freshman on the team.

"Do I think we have a chance at getting him back next season? Yeah," Orgeron said. "Is there a chance of him transferring? I don't know that. He hasn't told me he's transferring, but obviously we're going to re-recruit him and obviously we wish him the best. Take care of the the things he needs to take care of and be back with us next year." Multiple sources confirmed Gilbert missed practice Monday, and 247Sports first reported Gilbert is "really, really homesick." His role in the offense is also a factor, sources said. Orgeron also said that Gilbert's "body is hurting," Gilbert is a substantial loss for LSU and its future within the offense. The 6-foot-5, 249-pound freshman was the prize recruit of the 2020 class, the nation's Gatorade Player of the Year and the highest-rated tight end in the history of 247Sports. - Baton Rouge Advocate

  12/10/20 - Grant TisdalerSr/2025, Transfer, 6-0, 226 (DS#999 QB) + More +

Ole Miss quarterback Grant Tisdale is back in the transfer portal, a school spokesperson confirmed to the Clarion Ledger. A former four-star quarterback from Allen, Texas who was a part of the Rebels' 2019 signing class, Tisdale has only played in one game for the Rebels in his two seasons in Oxford. Tisdale entered the transfer portal in October 2019 but returned to the Rebels in December after Lane Kiffin was hired as head coach. Tisdale has not played in 2020 and for more than half the season he was listed as a wide receiver on the team website. Tisdale returned to quarterback for the Rebels' final two games, warming up as the fourth quarterback option pregame. He was not on the travel squad this year. As a true freshman in 2019, Tisdale played in mop-up duty against Alabama. He completed two passes for 56 yards and a touchdown and ran twice for 10 yards. - The Clarion Ledger

  12/09/20 - Arik GilbertrSr/2026, Transfer, 6-5, 275 (DS#999 TE) + More +

LSU freshman tight Arik Gilbert, who entered this week leading all active Tigers in receiving, has decided to opt out for the remainder of the season. LSU coach Ed Orgeron announced Gilbert's decision on Wednesday and the coach could not say for certain whether Gilbert intended to return next season or transfer elsewhere. "Do I think we have a chance at getting him back next season? Yeah," Orgeron said. "Is there a chance of him transferring? I don't know that. He hasn't told me he's transferring, but obviously we're going to re-recruit him and obviously we wish him the best."

Orgeron said the 6-foot-5, 249-pound Gilbert told him he was opting out because "his body was hurting and he had some things he had to take care of." Under NCAA rules adopted during the coronavirus pandemic, players may opt out this season without adversely affecting their scholarships. Gilbert had 35 catches for 368 yards and two touchdowns. He had been second in receiving at LSU behind Terrace Marshall Jr. until Marshall decided to opt out before last weekend's 55-17 loss to Alabama. - AP College Football

  12/08/20 - Arik GilbertrSr/2026, Transfer, 6-5, 275 (DS#999 TE) + More +

LSU coach Ed Orgeron said in a radio interview Tuesday morning that star tight end Arik Gilbert talked to him on Monday and said he is thinking about opting out for the rest of the season. Orgeron revealed more details on WNXX-FM 104.5 ESPN's "Off the Bench" about Gilbert's situation after news broke Monday night that the true freshman was considering leaving the team. Multiple sources confirmed that Gilbert missed practice on Monday, and 247Sports first reported that Gilbert is "really, really homesick." His role in the offense is also a factor, sources said. - The Advocate

  12/05/20 - Arik GilbertrSr/2026, Transfer, 6-5, 275 (DS#999 TE) + More +

LSU has frequently used Gilbert in trips or bunch formations, where three wide receivers line up on the left or right side of the formation, making it easier to lose Gilbert in traffic for easy yards. The Tigers have also used halfback motion into or out of the backfield to manipulate coverage schemes, creating matchups for the 6-foot-5, 249-pound tight end. "Tight ends are really difficult mismatch guys because of who ends up covering them most of the time," Alabama coach Nick Saban said.

"You have your best corners covering wide receivers, but when these guys are lined up close to the core, their run-pass options are more difficult to define relative to how they line up and who ends up covering them and who ends up matching up on them. I've always said that a tight end and a great running back are hard to cover. Those guys are mismatch problems because unless you put six defensive backs in there you're not going to have cover guys on them. You're going to have guys that you're probably putting on the field because they're good at stopping the run and other things." Several factors make Gilbert useful for the Tigers, but if he does see an increased workload on Saturday, it may be more necessity than anything else. Wide receiver Ja'marr Chase opted out before the season began and Terrace Marshall opted out over the weekend. Marshall's departure is a critical blow: he's responsible for a third of LSU's receiving yards and 10 of its 17 receiving touchdowns. Racey McMath - fifth on the team in receptions and yards - is unlikely to play due to injury, Orgeron said. - Montgomery Advertiser

  12/02/20 - Marcus FlemingrSo/2025, Transfer, 5-09, 165 (DS#999 WR) + More +

Another freshman from Florida has left the Nebraska football program. Marcus Fleming, a wide receiver from Miami, is no longer on the team, coach Scott Frost confirmed Monday. "We wish him the best. He's not going to be on the team anymore," Frost said. "We'll move on and feel good about that position and where it is." Fleming, the Miami Northwestern graduate, appeared to have his stock on the rise in the program when he led the team with 75 yards on five catches against Northwestern on Nov. 7. Those, though, were his only receptions of the season. He played sparingly against Penn State and Illinois at home and then did not crack the Huskers' 74-man travel roster to Iowa. - Lincoln Journal Star

Oklahoma State will be without backup quarterback Shane Illingworth on Saturday when the Cowboys face Texas Tech at 11 a.m. at Boone Pickens Stadium. Illingworth has tested positive for COVID-19, a source with knowledge of the situation told The Oklahoman. As a result of the positive test, Illingworth must be isolated for 10 days. Illingworth has played in four games this season for the Cowboys, starting two and entering two after starter Spencer Sanders was injured. - Daily Oklahoman

OSU's true freshman quarterback relieved injured starter Spencer Sanders midway through the first quarter and completed the Cowboys' only touchdown drive, with a 15-yard touchdown pass to Logan Carter. Sanders returned for the fourth quarter, but in between, Illingworth completed just two of 15 passes for 32 yards. Illingworth's numbers were a ghastly 5-of-21 for 71 yards. Yes, OSU had trouble blocking the Sooners, but this is the 21st century; 5-of-21 is losing football. - Daily Oklahoman

Arizona State sophomore tight end Nolan Matthews has announced his plans to enter the transfer portal. Matthews, a 6-foot-4, 260-pounder from Frisco, Texas, played in 12 games last year as a true freshman, with six receptions for 36 yards and a touchdown, that scoring play coming against UCLA. He was one of only six Power Five true freshman tight ends to play 200-plus snaps. He played in ASU's 28-27 season-opening loss to USC at Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum on Nov. 7 but did not record a catch. - Arizona Republic

  11/21/20 - Javion PoseyrSr/2025, Transfer, 6-1, 213 (DS#999 WR) + More +

Like FAU, USF leaned on its rushing attack under Taggart - especially during his last two and most successful seasons with the Bulls. USF averaged 45.7 carries in 2015 and 43.6 rushing attempts in 2016 compared to passing attempt averages of 23 and 27.5, respectively. FAU has averaged 43.3 rushing attempts to 21 passing attempts through its first five games. Taggart even sees similarities between Posey and the starting quarterback during his last two seasons with the Bulls, Quinton Flowers. Taggart coached Flowers at USF from 2014-16, with Flowers rushing for 2,521 yards for 30 touchdowns on 389 carries from 2015-16 and being named the AAC Offensive Player of the Year in 2016.

While Posey has only played two games at quarterback in his collegiate career, he's displayed speed and shiftiness as a runner similar to Flowers. "They're very similar," Taggart said. "Just watching those guys runs, they're just different with the football in their hands. It's hard to tackle them. Those guys just make things right. They're a joy to watch and highly competitive." Posey, who replaced Nick Tronti as the starting quarterback against FIU, led FAU to season highs of points, touchdowns and yards against the Panthers (0-4, 0-2). He broke the program's single-game record for the most rushing yards by a quarterback with 182 on 18 attempts to go along with 10 of 16 passing for three total touchdowns (two passing and one rushing). - Sun-Sentinel

  11/20/20 - Javion PoseyrSr/2025, Transfer, 6-1, 213 (DS#999 WR) + More +

Freshman Javion Posey passed for 203 yards and rushed for a 70-yard touchdown to help Florida Atlantic beat Massachusetts 24-2 on Friday night in the first meeting between the schools. FAU (5-1) scored the first 21 points before Tanner Davis blocked a punt, resulting in a safety for UMass late in the third quarter. BJ Emmons scored on a 1-yard run and Nick Tronti connected with Brandon Robinson for a 13-yard score. Vladimir Rivas capped the scoring with a 30-yard field goal. Posey completed 13-of-27 passes and carried it 19 times for 90 yards in his second career start. Last week, he passed for two touchdowns and set a program record for rushing yards (182) in a game by a quarterback. TJ Chase caught four passes for 79 yards for FAU. David Belvin III and Teja Young each made an interception. - AP College Football

  11/13/20 - Javion PoseyrSr/2025, Transfer, 6-1, 213 (DS#999 WR) + More +

Javion Posey ran for 140 yards and accounted for three touchdowns to lead Florida Atlantic to a 38-19 victory over Florida International on Friday night. Posey, a redshirt freshman from Greenville, Alabama, also set the program's single-game yards rushing mark for a quarterback. He had runs of 28 and 36 yards that led to scores, and finished with 117 yards in just the first half. Posey's 11-yard touchdown pass to LaJohntay Wester and a 5-yarder to Brandon Robinson helped FAU (4-1, 4-1 Conference USA) build a 24-10 halftime lead.

He added a 2-yard TD run late in the fourth quarter, and finished 10-of-16 passing for 80 yards. Malcolm Davidson had a 37-yard touchdown run and James Charles ran for a 32-yard score for the Owls. D'vonte Price broke loose for a 77-yard touchdown run for FIU (0-4, 0-2). Price carried the ball 26 times for a career-best 178 yards. Max Bortenschlager threw a 67-yard touchdown pass to Rivaldo Fairweather with two minutes remaining. - AP College Football

Mourning's first college football season will be a baptism by fire, because he will be thrust into a playmaker role immediately, when it could've been a year to study veterans Colin Schooler and Tony Fields, but the uncertainty of the Pac-12 season steered Arizona's defensive leaders to the Big 12. Schooler and Fields were the bulk of Arizona's tackles over the last three years, combining for 600 in 37 games. Arizona already lacked depth at linebacker before the departure of Fields and Schooler, but now? It's gotten to the point where walk-ons are going to appear on the Wildcats' weekly depth chart.

Here's one note that bodes well for the 6-3, 229-pound Mourning: Schooler and Fields were leaders of an Arizona defense as freshmen in 2017 and started every game since their college debuts. In a perfect world for Arizona, Schooler and Fields would've mentored young inside linebackers like Mourning and Derrion Clark, but 2020 has relentlessly proven that circumstances can quickly change. Playing alongside team captain Anthony Pandy, Mourning will have no other choice but to become a tackling machine this season, if the Wildcats have plans to progress as a defense despite their personnel losses. - Arizona Star News
