With COVID-19 cases surging in the state and Gov. Doug Ducey ordering a shutdown, the University of Arizona has put its athletics reentry plan on pause. On June 15, UA had begun bringing football players back in waves to participate in voluntary on-campus workouts. Eighty-three student-athletes had returned to campus, and only one had tested positive for COVID-19, according to the university. But with cases still on the rise in Pima County and elsewhere, and the healthcare system becoming increasingly burdened, UA has halted workouts for the time being.

"Out of an abundance of caution, we have made this decision with campus and community partners to pause our reentry process," UA Athletic Director Dave Heeke said in a statement. "The health, safety and well-being of all members of our community is our No. 1 priority. We will continue to work in conjunction with campus partners and our local government agencies to support and evaluate a safe and healthy return to campus." - Arizona Republic

  06/28/20 - Eric MonroerSr/2022, Texas Tech, 5-11, 200 (DS#66 SS) + More +

For Texas Tech, it's never too late to land some of the top football talent coming out of Texas high schools, even if some of the talent arrives four years later. Eric Monroe, who helped Galena Park North Shore win a state championship in 2015 and was one of bluest of the state's blue chips that year, announced Saturday he is coming to Texas Tech as a graduate transfer. Monroe, a safety, has spent the past four years at LSU, which listed him at 5-foot-11 and 209 pounds. Monroe redshirted for the Tigers in 2016, then got credit for 14 tackles and two passes defended in 2017. He played in only four games in 2018, recording no statistics, then got into 12 games last season and was credited with seven tackles including a tackle for loss. As a grad transfer, Monroe will be immediately eligible for the Red Raiders. He had his name entered into the transfer portal last week. - Lubbock Avalanche Journal

LSU senior safety Eric Monroe has entered the NCAA transfer portal, according to multiple reports. Monroe entered the portal Friday, reports said, allowing other college coaches to contact him about transferring from LSU. NCAA rules allow him to later remove his name from the portal. AL.com's Matt Zenitz first reported the news. Monroe arrived at LSU considered a top-50 recruit by 247Sports and consensus top-5 high school safety in the country. Monroe, a former four-star prospect, redshirted his first year on campus, giving him one more season of eligibility. Monroe has appeared in 29 games over three seasons, including 12 during LSU's run to the national championship. He made seven tackles last year as a backup safety and special teams contributor. - Baton Rouge Advocate

The most recent Alabama player to enter the NCAA transfer portal will be continuing his career in the Big 12. Wide receiver Chadarius Townsend is transferring to Texas Tech, he announced on Instagram Tuesday night. The former four-star recruit spent time at three different positions for the Crimson Tide - wide receiver, running back and defensive back - but his only playing time aside from special teams came during mop-up time. Townsend, who entered the transfer portal last week, will be immediately eligible at Texas Tech as a graduate transfer and will have two years of eligibility remaining. - Birmingham News

SaRodorick Thompson took over as Texas Tech's lead running back during the 2019 football season, gradually becoming a workhorse and a top-10 ground gainer in the Big 12. That's not likely to change soon, barring an injury to Thompson, a rapid rise by incoming freshman Tahj Brooks or an addition from outside. The Red Raiders are, for the most part, pinning their hopes on Thompson and Brooks to handle the position. Alante Brown's failing to meet freshman eligibility requirements last summer and Ta'Zhawn Henry's decision to transfer just before spring practice leaves the Red Raiders with a thin running-backs room.

As a redshirt freshman, Thompson carried 160 times for 765 yards and 12 touchdowns. Within the Big 12, he ranked sixth in carries, eighth in rushing yards and third in rushing touchdowns. The Tech offensive staff can take heart from the fact he's handled a heavy load. "He kind of showed that last year, especially at the end of the season with the amount of reps he was taking," Tech offensive coordinator David Yost said. "He continued that on to when we started spring ball. It's like, 'Well, that's the guy we can lean on." - Lubbock Avalanche Journal

The Arizona Wildcats are following the lead of the Pac-12 Conference by bringing student-athletes back to campus in mid-June. The UA "will begin the process of having student-athletes return to campus for volunteer physical training" on June 15, the school announced Friday morning. That date coincides with the league's recommendation issued earlier this week. Campuses have been closed to students since mid-March because of the coronavirus pandemic.

The first group will consist of football players. Student-athletes from other sports, along with select staff members, will return "in phases on a weekly basis" thereafter, the school said in a news release. Priority will go to those who compete in fall sports. The release also noted that "all student-athletes and staff members on campus will follow significantly elevated safety protocols for testing, tracing and treatment." "The phased re-entry of student-athletes is the next step in Arizona Athletics' commitment to a safe and healthy return to campus," UA athletic director Dave Heeke said, via the school. "This comprehensive plan to bring student-athletes back to campus is a collaboration between our athletics department and campus partners to develop guidelines, protocols and procedures. - Arizona Star News

  05/25/20 - Eli HowardrSr/2021, Texas Tech, 6-3, 276 (DS#40 DT) + More +

Who steps in to fill the shoes of Broderick Washington? As a defensive tackle, Washington finished with the ninth most tackles among Texas Tech defenders last season. He also totaled 5.5 tackles for loss to go with a pair of pass deflections and a fumble recovery. The attention Washington demanded the middle freed up room for Eli Howard coming off the edge. Howard returns for his final collegiate season as one of the most underrated pass rushers in the Big 12. In 10 games last season, Howard put up five sacks and six tackles for loss. - Dallas Morning News

One day after UA president Robert C. Robbins expressed concern about the viability of college football this fall, Wildcats athletic director Dave Heeke clarified his department's stance on the season, which is in doubt because of the coronavirus pandemic. Heeke has been working with other athletic directors in the Pac-12, which is working with other conferences across the country, "to bring consistency to a restart of football," Heeke said in a phone interview Thursday afternoon.

"We certainly continue to explore all options regarding football for next year," Heeke said. "Everything's on the table as far as how we would restart it. "It's important for us to restart football, and we want to do that in the appropriate manner. We want to follow the science and be able to assure a safe and good environment for our student-athletes, for our staff and coaches, as well as for fans. So those will dictate how and when we re-engage. "We're all working very hard to find solutions so we can play football. That's our goal." - Arizona Star News

  04/23/20 - Jordyn BrooksSr/2020, Texas Tech, 6-0, 240 (DS#2 ILB) + More +

For the first time since 2011, the Seahawks used their original first-round pick, and they did so to acquire a player who they hope can be a difference maker for their defense, Texas Tech linebacker Jordyn Brooks. The Seahawks came into the draft with the No. 27 overall pick, and unlike the past eight drafts, they used that pick to take Brooks, a 6-foot, 240-pound linebacker who was a second-team Associated Press All-American in 2019. And if it was a surprise for observers to see the Seahawks use their first-round pick and not trade back, getting the call from Seattle was just as surprising to Brooks, not because he didn't believe in his ability, but because he hadn't been in contact with Seattle since the NFL Scouting Combine.

Brooks said on a Zoom call with the media that he was in the kitchen making some pasta when he was told his phone was ringing. "I was a little bit surprised it was the Seahawks; I wasn't surprised about the first round, but was surprised the Seahawks came and got me," Brooks said. "I hadn't talked to them since the Combine, so I wasn't really expecting them to pick me, but I'm forever grateful and excited to get to be there in Seattle." - Seahawks.com

  03/20/20 - *Erik EzukanmarJr/2022, Texas Tech, 6-2, 206 (DS#31 WR) + More +

Erik Ezukanma last year put together the best season statistically by a Texas Tech freshman wide receiver in the past decade. He might not have been sensational right from the start, and in fact he wasn't, but over the second half of the season it was plain to see why Tech coach Matt Wells started raving about Ezukanma months before. The talent is there, and Ezukanma began to assert himself more and more as the year went on. Now he's been involved in enough college football to know what his next step needs to be. "Being more aggressive as a receiver," Ezukanma said recently. "DBs, they're going to grab you, they're going to hold you, but you've got to be aggressive. You've got to knock them off you. You've got to be a dog on the field. I gain all this weight; I've got to use it."

The 6-foot-3 sophomore from Keller Timber Creek is up to 213 pounds, more than 30 pounds heavier than when he first arrived on campus in 2018. That's after what Wells recently called the Red Raiders' "first real off-season of real lifting and conditioning and things that we do" under strength and conditioning coach Dave Scholz. Ezukanma has gotten bigger while remaining trim and sculpted. "I feel a lot more lean," he said. "I feel like I can run a lot faster. We've been working on speed in the off-season, so I feel like I'm a lot faster now than what I was." - Lubbock Avalanche Journal
