Texas Tech linebacker Jacob Morgenstern announced Monday he will stay with the team for 2021. Morgenstern was credited with 32 tackles and 4 1/2 tackles for loss in his first season after coming to Tech as a graduate transfer from Duke. Morgenstern is th e eighth of 17 seniors, including four full-time and one part-time starter on defense, who have said they'll be back in 2021. The Texas Tech football team will have plenty of candidates for comeback player of the year next season, though not in the tradi tional sense of players returning from injury or some other misfortune to have a noteworthy season. Instead, the Red Raiders have seniors taking advantage of the opportunity afforded by the NCAA to come back for another senior season in 2021. - Lubbock A valanche Journal

Jacob Morgenstern forged his reputation at Duke on being a special-teams standout. He and Texas Tech coaches saw eye to eye on something else: Morgenstern could be more than that. It hasn't taken him long to validate that belief. The 6-foot-4, 220-pound outside linebacker joined the Red Raiders this summer as a graduate transfer and made eye-opening plays on both defense and special teams Saturday in Tech's 63-56 overtime loss to No. 8 Texas. "That was part of the reason I chose Tech," Morgenstern said during a Zoom conference after Tuesday's practice. "I knew I was at least going to have an opportunity to come in, contribute and make plays and I knew that this defense would be a good fit for me and a defense and a scheme where I could use my abilities ."The senior from Poughkeepsie, New York, got credit for five tackles Saturday, including one behind the line when he penned up running back Roschon Johnson, and he flipped Bijan Robinson when the Longhorns' running back tried to hurdle him. And, in keeping with his reputation, he blocked a punt. Tech coaches have plugged in Morgenstern as an outside linebacker. He spent the previous four years at Duke, earning a degree in public policy and graduating with a 3.5 grade-point average, but perhaps b eing miscast in his football role. - Lubbock Avalanche Journal
