2023 BIG 12 SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE YEAR: Austin McNamara, Texas Tech, P, Sr.,...McNamara is the first Texas Tech player to garner Special Teams Player of the Year since the award's inception in 2005. He is the first punter since 2018 to earn the honor. Furthermore, McNamara was named a first-team All-Big 12 selection as well as senior running back Tahj Brooks. McNamara's honor makes him a three-time All-Big 12 first-team selection; he is the Red Raiders' first three-time first-team All-Big 12 pick and was already just one of seven Red Raiders to own multiple first-team selections alongside Le'Raven Clark (2014-15), Michael Crabtree (2007-08), Joel Filani (2005-06), Jarrett Hicks (2004-05), Kevin Curtis (1999-2000) and Montae Reagor (1997-98). McNamara holds the eighth-best punting average in the FBS this season among players with at least 50 attempts at 46.5 yards per punt. - Texas Tech Football

Texas Tech punter Austin McNamara, who has four of the top eight single-season punting averages in the program's history, announced Friday he plans to return for the Red Raiders in 2023. Tech has 23 seniors this year with the option of playing again in 2023 on the extra year of eligibility the NCAA offers all players whose 2020 seasons were disrupted by the Covid pandemic. McNamara is the 15th of those 23 to exercise the option to return.

McNamara is in position to end up with the school career and single-season punting average records. He's averaging 45.8 yards over his first four seasons, ahead of the pace of current record holder Austin Symmank, who averaged 43.7 yards from 2012-15. McNamara set the Tech single-season record of 48.2 yards in 2021. His average this year was a career-low 44.3 yards, still fourth best in the Big 12. - Lubbock Avalanche Journal

2022 PRESEASON RAY GUY WATCHLIST: Austin McNamara - Texas Tech,...McNamara (6-4, 195) is listed as a place kicker in the Texas Tech online bio, but stats show he kicked off once for 75 yards while really making his name as a punter with a whopping average of 46.3 yards, including 48.2 last season (2021). Against Oklahoma State he set the all-time FBS record for most punts of at least 50 yards in one game, with eight. Only five of his 42 punts last season were touchbacks. In 2020 McNamara averaged 46.3 yards and lofted a career-high 87-yarder, the longest in school history. In 2019 her served notice that he should be on all watch lists as he averaged 45 yards with a long of 60 as he was the first freshman at Texas Tech to make All-Big 12 since wide receiver Michael Crabtree in 2007. At Highland High in Gilbert, AZ, McNamara average 42.6 yards per punt as a senior, drilled 12 field goals (including 45-yarder) and made all 63 of his PAT kicks. - Texas Tech Football

When it came to special teams during the 2021 college football season, Texas Tech had one of the most potent one-two punches a team could ask for in Austin McNamara and Jonathan Garibay. McNamara averaged 48.2 yards per punt, the highest average in Texas Tech and Big 12 history. Garibay made 15 of 16 field goals, including a pair of late game winners: one for 32 yards at West Virginia and another for 62 yards to vanquish Iowa State. Garibay gave up his last year of eligibility and signed a free-agent deal with the Dallas Cowboys, leaving the Red Raiders to stage a competition to be his replacement. Better news for Tech on the punter front: McNamara will handle that duty for the Red Raiders for the fourth year in a row, taking a career average of 46.3 yards into 2022. Tech ranked fifth in the FBS last season in net punting - gross yards, less return yards - at 43.98 yards.

Austin McNamara was named best special teams player to highlight the Texas Tech football players named to Dave Campbell's Texas Football's all-Texas College teams released Tuesday. McNamara was named first-team punter on the all-state squad. As a junior, the Gilbert, Arizona native set Texas Tech and Big 12 conference records by averaging 48.2 yards per punt. He also set the FBS record for most 50-plus yard punts in a game with eight, which are school and conference marks as well. Running back Tahj Brooks and defensive lineman Tyree Wilson were named to the publication's second-team All-Texas College squad. Brooks led the Red Raiders in rushing yards (568) while scoring seven touchdowns on 87 attempts during his sophomore campaign. - Lubbock Avalanche Journal

If you think a punter cracking the top five of a roster ranking is strange, you probably haven't seen Austin McNamara boot a football. In 2021, McNamara averaged 48.2 yards per punt -- the highest in Texas Tech and Big 12 history. Punters can truly be game changers, and there's a legitimate argument that McNamara is the most valuable player on the Texas Tech roster. - Dallas Morning News

Austin McNamara was the highlight for several Texas Tech athletes selected to the preseason All-American and All-Big 12 teams released Wednesday by Phil Steele Magazine. The junior punter was named a first-team preseason All-American by the publication going into his third year at Tech. He was also one of nine Red Raiders in the publication's preseason All-Big 12 teams as one of the four selections to the first team. Tech junior wide receiver Erik Ezukanma, senior defensive back DaMarcus Fields and senior offensive lineman T.J. Storment joined McNamara on the first team. Ezukanma and McNamara were All-Big 12 first-team selections by the conference coaches after the 2020 season while Storment was a second-team pick while playing for TCU. Three of Tech's senior linebackers were also recognized as Kishon Merriweather and Colin Schooler were named to the second team while Riko Jeffers joined the third team. - Lubbock Avalanche Journal

McNamara, a native of Gilbert, Arizona, averaged 45.0 yards per punt, which led all freshmen nationally and ranked 16th nationally in the category. His average marked the highest all-time by a Tech freshman and was the fourth-best clip by any punter in program history. Opponents returned only nine of McNamara's 59 punts on the year, averaging just 5.2 yards per return. He downed 20 of his punts inside the 20 yard line as well. - Texas Tech Football
