  08/12/22 - Dayon HayesrSr/2026, Texas AM, 6-3, 264 (DS#87 DE) + More +

Pitt football team members have banded together to form the first-of-its-kind Steel City Name, Image and Likeness Club that will allow fans to offer financial support to players. In exchange, donors will be able to meet players on video calls, watch discussions of practices, upcoming games and recruiting and interact with other fans on message boards and chatrooms, according to a Tweet posted by the club Tuesday afternoon. The club reported already raising more than $7,800 of a $20,000 monthly goal. There were 329 active members by Wednesday evening.

Junior defensive end Dayon Hayes said the videos will unveil "little stuff so they can see inside of us." "It's a great team bonding thing, honestly," he said. "If anybody wants to see (running back Vincent Davis), they can pay to get him, but we all get equal amounts." Pitt coach Pat Narduzzi said Steel City NIL is a players-only effort, and he doesn't know much about it. "I'm not supposed to be involved in it," he said. "If our guys are smiling, I'm happy. I want our guys to be happy. It's great to line our kids' pockets in some of those different ways." Steel City NIL is the first such effort to involve the entire team. - Pittsburgh Tribune-Review

  08/08/22 - Ainias SmithrSr/2024, Texas AM, 5-09, 190 (DS#29 WR) + More +

Most were surprised when Texas A&M senior Ainias Smith was arrested on a trio of charges last month. That's not who they thought Smith was, and it turned out they were right, because the charges were later dropped. Smith missed a chance to represent himself and A&M at the Southeastern Conference Media Days last month, but he was front and center in the Kyle Field media center a few hours before A&M's first practice of fall camp late Wednesday afternoon. "That was a tough little time," Smith said. "I guess you could say my main thing about that whole situation was just lay low, keep praying and keep faith and let God take over basically." Smith was arrested on charges of DWI, possession of less than 2 ounces of marijuana and unlawfully carrying a weapon.

The only thing he turned out to be guilty of was poor judgement, because the person in the car confessed to owning the marijuana and gun. Some had to think Smith was guilty, and possibly some still have doubt of his total innocence. "I think he came out and explained it," A&M head coach Jimbo Fisher said. "You tell the truth and you move on and don't worry about it. You can't worry about that. You have to go play and do the right things and make the right decisions each and every day." Smith was disappointed he didn't get to attend the SEC Media Days in Atlanta. "It was a great opportunity to build my brand and get a little bit more exposure for myself," Smith said. "But now that that's past, [I'm] not able to worry about that any more, and I'm excited to play ball. I mean, it's all I got left now." - Bryan/College Station Eagle

While dealing with the aftermath of a July arrest for DUI, possession of less than two ounces of marijuana and gun possession, Texas A&M wide receiver was unable to attend SEC Media Days. He was exonerated and charges were dropped, so this week he was more than happy to meet the press. "That was a tough little time," Smith said. "I guess you could say my main thing about that whole situation was just lay low, keep praying and keep faith and let God take over basically." "He's a leader," A&M junior defensive back Antonio Johnson said. "He leads best by example." The three-star recruit from Sugar Land Dulles came to A&M as a wide receiver. He moved to running back when needed then moved back to receiver. He also returns punts. He's Fisher's Swiss Army knife. "He'll be whoever he needs to be," said Johnson. "That's the best way I can put it." - Bryan/College Station Eagle

  08/03/22 - Chris Russell Jr.rSr/2024, Texas AM, 6-1, 235 (DS#39 OLB) + More +

Texas A&M senior linebacker Chris Russell has been charged with failing to identify and giving false/ficticious information during the arrest of teammate Ainias Smith who had all his charges dropped from the July 20 incident. Smith had a trio of charges dropped Friday, which was the same day Russell turned himself in at the Brazos County Jail, reported the Houston Chronicle's Brent Zwerneman. Russell was released Saturday morning.

Russell was with Smith when the senior wide receiver and punt returner was arrested on charges of DWI, possession of less than 2 ounces of marijuana and unlawfully carrying a weapon. Russell provided a fake name and date of birth when asked for both by police, Zwerneman reported. Smith denied owning the handgun or marijuana as did the passenger, which at the time wasn't identified. Russell later returned on July 20th to provide a statement that he owned the marijuana, but prosecutors didn't move forward with charges because they were unconvinced of Russell's statement. However, the University Police moved forward on the fact Russell provided false information. Gun possession is legal in Texas if no other crime is being committed and Russell wasn't arrested at that time for supplying false information, a decision made by the officers on the scene, reported the Chronicle. - Bryan/College Station Eagle
