Michigan quarterback Joe Milton has entered the transfer portal, depleting coach Jim Harbaugh's depth at the position. Milton made the announcement Thursday on Twitter. Milton wrote that he will have three years of eligibility remaining as a graduate transfer. He won the starting job with the Wolverines last year after beating out Dylan McCaffrey. The brother of Carolina Panthers running back Christian McCaffrey chose not to come back to the program for a fourth year in 2020. He transferred last month to play for his father, Ed, at Northern Colorado. Milton started strong in a 49-24 victory over then-No. 21 Minnesota last season, but he eventually lost his job to redshirt freshman Cade McNamara. - AP College Football

Announcing a decision to refrain from the NCAA transfer portal may not be deemed newsworthy from a traditional point of view, but Tennessee's football program could use anything to celebrate amid a continuing exodus. Sophomore offensive lineman Darnell Wright, the No. 10 prospect nationally in the 2019 signing class, revealed Monday night that he would remain with the Volunteers. The 6-foot-6, 330-pounder from Huntington, West Virginia, started nine games this past season, mostly at right tackle. - Chattanooga Times Free Press

Josh Palmer has his sights set on the next chapter of his football career. The senior wide receiver said farewell to Tennessee in an Instagram post Thursday, confirming what has been expected for months - that Palmer would depart for the NFL rather than exercise the option to play an additional senior season in 2021. Palmer is set to play in the Senior Bowl on Jan. 30 in Mobile, Alabama, in an opportunity to showcase his skills for NFL scouts. Teammate Trey Smith, who also is headed for the NFL draft, is also on the Senior Bowl roster. The 6-foot-2, 210-pound Palmer was one of Tennessee's top players in 2020, when he caught 33 passes for 475 yards and four touchdowns. He came within one reception of matching his single-season career high for receptions despite this season only featuring 10 games. - Knoxville News Sentinel

Michigan quarterback Joe Milton struggled late in the season with a thumb issue and is seen wearing a cast on his right hand in a recent Instagram post. Milton, who started five games as Michigan's quarterback last fall, had offseason surgery, according to a source close to the program. It is unclear when the surgery took place. The video posted on Instagram shows Milton playing with his dog and a cast protecting his hand and thumb. In the Week 3 game at Indiana, Milton was seen wearing a protective wrap on the hand and thumb and in every subsequent game. - Detroit News

Tennessee football's most productive defensive lineman the past two seasons plans to return for a final year in 2021. Matthew Butler announced Monday that he will play an additional senior season with the Vols. Butler will not count against UT's limit of 85 scholarship players because the NCAA announced in August that players who were seniors in 2020 could return for another season without counting against a team's scholarship limit. Butler joins wide receiver Velus Jones Jr., cornerback Kenneth George Jr. and defensive lineman Darel Middleton as seniors who have declared that they will return to UT in 2021. Another senior defensive lineman, LaTrell Bumphus, also is likely to return. - Knoxville News Sentinel

Tennessee's kickoff returner and second-leading receiver is returning for another season of college ball. Senior Velus Jones Jr. announced Monday via Twitter that he will play another season for the Vols in 2021. Jones will not count against UT's limit of 85 scholarship players, because the NCAA announced in August that players who were seniors in 2020 could return for another season without counting against a team's scholarship limit. In his first season with Tennessee as a graduate transfer from Southern California, Jones averaged 22.1 yards on 18 kickoff returns. He also caught 22 passes for 280 yards and had three carries for 16 yards. - Knoxville News Sentinel

One of Tennessee's top offensive linemen will return for another season rather than head to the NFL. Right guard Cade Mays plans to return to the Vols in 2021, a team spokesman confirmed to Knox News on Thursday. Mays, a junior, started seven games this season, his first year with Tennessee after transferring from Georgia. The former Knoxville Catholic High School star made his debut for Tennessee on Oct. 3 against Missouri after receiving transfer waivers from the NCAA and SEC, allowing him eligibility to play this season rather than sit out one season under NCAA transfer rules. He started at right tackle against Missouri before shifting to right guard for his remaining starts. He missed the final two games of the season with a lower leg injury. - Knoxville News Sentinel

2020 ALL-SEC FIRST TEAM (COACHES): OL Trey Smith, Tennessee,...Smith was one of five SEC offensive linemen selected to the first team. He becomes the first Volunteer offensive lineman to earn the honor in back-to-back seasons since Arron Sears during the 2005-06 campaigns. Smith is one four UT offensive linemen to achieve that Coaches team feat in the last 32 years, joining Sears, Antone Davis (1989-90) and Eric Still (1988-89). For his career, Smith started 41 of the 42 games he played in, including 22 consecutive starts. He logged over 2,500 offensive snaps in his four years and allowed only one sack in his final two seasons. - Tennessee Football

Flames defensive end Austin Lewis and quarterback Chris Ferguson have both entered the transfer portal and are expected to enroll at new universities for the spring semester. Freeze is allowing them to play in the bowl game and give them the opportunity to finish the season with their teammates. "I just admire people that finish and finish the right way. I get the world we live in and both are transferring for different reasons, and I think both are right to transfer," Freeze said. "We had those discussions, we were honest with each other and I think for what they're wanting, I think it's in their best interest to do that. My challenge to them was just finish well and I'll help you any way I can."

Lewis is completing his junior season and was the program's first All-American at the FBS level. He was a standout defensive end early at Liberty and has added weight to be able to play inside more frequently. However, his playing time diminished with the arrival of new explosive defensive ends and more consistent play from the tackles. - Lynchburg News and Advance

Tennessee tight end Austin Pope has entered the NCAA transfer portal, a team spokesman confirmed Monday. Pope was a starter in 2019 but sat out all of this season after having preseason back surgery for a herniated disc. Pope, a senior, will have the option to return next season thanks to an NCAA ruling that the 2020 season will not count against a player's eligibility. Entering the transfer portal does not require a player to transfer, but it is a first step that allows other coaches to contact the player. The Christian Academy of Knoxville graduate entered this season as Tennessee's most experienced tight end. He has played in 33 career games, including 14 starts. He started 11 games last season. - Knoxville News Sentinel

The Jackson, Tenn., native is 8-of-9 on field goals, including a career-long 52-yarder (T-6h in IU history) in the win over No. 23 Michigan, and 23-of-23 on extra points. Campbell made all three of his attempts (T-10th in IU history) in the victory at Rutgers en route to Big Ten Special Teams Player of the Week and Lou Groza Award Star of the Week honors. - Indiana Football

Running back Lyn-J Dixon was Travis Etienne's unquestioned backup last season, finishing the 2019 campaign averaging 6.1 yards per carry. Dixon has been slower to produce this season, with offensive coordinator Tony Elliott noting often the battle for Etienne's primary backup remained open. The junior might have solidified his spot Saturday. After scoring his first touchdown of the season last weekend in the 52-17 win over Pittsburgh, Dixon found the end zone again Saturday on a 19-yard run. He rushed for 37 yards on three carries in the win. - Charleston Post Courier
