Tennessee football dipped into the transfer portal Thursday to add another linebacker. Michigan transfer William Mohan announced on Twitter he committed to Tennessee. "Starting over a new chapter in life, I want to thank everyone who helped me throughout this process. Thank you God & GO VOLS," Mohan wrote. Mohan is the second linebacker to transfer to UT, joining Texas transfer Juwan Mitchell. He is the seventh player to transfer to Tennessee since spring practice concluded on April 24.

The 6-foot-1, 205-pound Mohan played in one game and made one tackle for the Wolverines in 2020. Tennessee linebackers coach Brian Jean-Mary was the Michigan linebackers coach last season. Mohan was a three-star prospect out of Brooklyn, New York. Tennessee's linebacker corps were depleted this offseason. Starters Henry To'o To'o and Quavaris Crouch entered the transfer portal. Crouch transferred to Michigan State. To'o To'o transferred to Alabama. - Knoxville News Sentinel

JaVonta Payton is transferring to Tennessee football from Mississippi State, the former Bulldogs wide receiver announced on Twitter on Wednesday. "I was always meant to be home," wrote Payton, who is from Nashville. The 6-foot-1, 180-pound Payton caught 19 passes for 225 yards and a touchdown in 2020. He had nine receptions for 147 yards in 2019. Payton appeared in 22 games with five starts at Mississippi State. He attended Hillsboro High before spending the first two years of his college career at Northwest Mississippi Community College. Tennessee offered Payton out of high school and junior college. - The Clarion Ledger

LaTrell Bumphus was arguably Tennessee's best defensive lineman last season before he suffered a knee injury during warmups at Arkansas on Nov. 7. Bumphus made 14 tackles in five games playing defensive end. Tennessee's defensive line was not a productive unit in 2020, when ex-Vols coach Jeremy Pruitt fired defensive line coach Jimmy Brumbaugh after four games. Bumphus should be a staple of an experienced position and one of its better pass-rushing options. - Knoxville News Sentinel

Martavius French is no longer an answer for Tennessee's dwindling core of inside linebackers. The 6-foot-2, 240-pound redshirt freshman announced this weekend that he is entering the NCAA transfer portal. French and three early enrollees for the Volunteers - quarterback Kaidon Salter, defensive tackle Isaac Washington and inside linebacker Aaron Willis - were arrested in early March after an incident at Stokely Hall that yielded marijuana and drug paraphernalia possession charges. None of the four practiced this spring, and Washington entered the portal this past Thursday. French was a four-star signee out of Whitehaven High School in Memphis and was the nation's No. 17 inside linebacker prospect in the 2020 class, according to the 247Sports.com composite rankings. He did not play in any games last season. - Chattanooga Times Free Press

The Tennessee football team has added some experience to its defensive front. On Thursday, USC graduate transfer defensive lineman Caleb Tremblay announced his commitment to the Vols. He played in 18 games and made three starts in three seasons with the Trojans. He had 21 total tackles, 3.5 for loss, and two sacks. Tremblay, who will join former teammate and placekicker Chase McGrath in Knoxville, entered the NCAA transfer portal on April 23. The 6-foot-5, 270 pound Tremblay signed with USC in 2018 out of American River Community College in Sacramento, California. He was ranked the No. 5 junior college defensive line prospect and No. 12 nationally in the 247Sports Composite. He is the fourth player to transfer to the Vols since the 2020 season ended, joining McGrath, Virginia Tech quarterback Hendon Hooker and Michigan quarterback Joe Milton. - Knoxville News Sentinel

There is a new dynamic in the Tennessee Volunteers quarterback room, and a sizable dynamic at that. Joe Milton, a graduate transfer from Michigan, announced Monday via Instagram that he will continue his career in Knoxville and join a mix that contained junior Brian Maurer, sophomore Harrison Bailey and Virginia Tech graduate transfer Hendon Hooker during the 15 spring practices that concluded Saturday with the first Orange & White game of the Josh Heupel era. At 6-foot-5 and 243 pounds, Milton is the biggest participant in the bunch. Milton, who was in Knoxville this past weekend, played in 14 career games for the Wolverines and made five starts. He completed 80 of 141 passes (56.7%) for 1,077 yards with four touchdowns and four interceptions. - Chattanooga Times Free Press

USC defensive lineman Caleb Tremblay has entered the NCAA transfer portal. Tremblay announced the decision in a post on Twitter. He'll have one year of eligibility remaining thanks to the additional year granted by the NCAA due to the pandemic. The redshirt senior defensive lineman transferred to USC in spring 2018 after spending the previous year in junior college at American River Community College. An injury limited his first season at USC, but Tremblay emerged as a rotational defensive lineman in 2019 and 2020. He leaves USC with 21 total tackles, 3.5 for loss, and two sacks in his career. - Los Angeles Times

Three days after catching two passes for 29 yards in Mississippi State's spring football game, senior wide receiver JaVonta Payton entered the NCAA transfer portal. Payton appeared in 22 games with five starts at Mississippi State. The Nashville native went to Hillsboro High before spending the first two years of his college career at Northwest Mississippi Community College. Payton's production increased slightly from 2019 to 2020. He went from nine catches for 147 yards to 19 catches for 225 yards and a touchdown. It still was not enough to keep him around in Starkville, especially with the addition of transfer Makai Polk from Cal. Polk saw more action than Payton in the spring game, hauling in two catches for 41 yards and a touchdown on 11 targets. Payton was only targeted three times. - The Clarion Ledger

Trey Smith has no problem explaining his situation, no matter how many times he has to detail his history of blood clots. The Tennessee guard wants to make sure no NFL coach or general manager has any unanswered questions about his availability to play before the upcoming draft. "I'll explain it a million times if I have to," Smith said. "Because it's just something unique. It's something that's different. At the end of the day, I want to play football at a high level. I want to go to the NFL, so I have no issue whatsoever helping people understand what I went through and making them comfortable with it as well."

The 6-foot-5, 321-pound Smith played 42 games at Tennessee even while dealing with his condition. Blood clots in his lungs kept him out of spring practice in 2018, but blood thinners allowed him to eventually return. He missed the final five games that season when doctors worried Smith had a recurrence of blood clots before extended testing made them confident that hadn't happened. Doctors and specialists put together a plan and medications that allowed him to start 12 of 13 games in 2019 at left guard, and he earned first-time All-Southeastern Conference honors. - Chattanooga Times Free Press

Joe Milton has reportedly found a new home, and it's in the Southeastern Conference. The former Michigan quarterback is planning to transfer to the University of Tennessee this summer, according to a report Monday by Rocky Top Insider, a website devoted to covering the Volunteers, citing multiple unidentified sources. Milton has not yet announced the move, but a Joe Milton is currently listed in the school's online directory. He is on track to graduate from the University of Michigan next month. The 6-foot-5, 243-pound quarterback entered his name into the NCAA's transfer portal in February, setting in motion his plan to depart Michigan. Milton appeared in 14 games for the Wolverines over three seasons, going from scout team quarterback to third on the depth chart to starter in 2020. In five starts, Milton completed 57 percent of his passes for 1,077 yards and four touchdowns. But he also threw four interceptions and regressed in his final three starts, leading to a change in quarterback against Penn State, in what turned out to be Michigan's regular-season finale. - Ann Arbor News

Aaron Beasley's suspension from Tennessee football will continue "until the process is able to unfold and facts are found out," Vols coach Josh Heupel said Thursday. Beasley, a junior linebacker, was cited Tuesday for animal cruelty by Knox County animal control personnel, a Knoxville Police Department spokesperson told Knox News. "As soon as we found out the information that came to us (Monday), we suspended him until the process is able to unfold and facts are found out," Heupel said. "At that time, once we have the information, we will make a long-term decision at that point." The police spokesperson indicated the animal cruelty citation is a class A misdemeanor, which is punishable by up to 11 months, 29 days in jail and/or fines up to $2,500. Beasley was accused of abusing a 6-month-old cat, according to an incident report filed April 1 with the police. - Knoxville News Sentinel

The former four-star prospect from Florida got off to a promising start in 2020 in his first year as the starter but stumbled down the stretch. He was replaced by Cade McNamara in Michigan's comeback victory against Rutgers in the fifth game of the season and lost the starting job Week 6 against Penn State. All four of Milton's touchdown passes came during the first three games, while he completed fewer than 50% of his passes in each of the last three, albeit he only threw three against the Nittany Lions in relief. Despite featuring a 6-foot-5, 243-pound frame with immense arm strength, Milton never hit his stride in Michigan's offense. With McNamara returning and the arrival of five-star freshman J.J. McCarthy, Milton entered the portal Feb. 18. He has three years of eligibility remaining but has not yet announced his new destination. - Ann Arbor News

Tennessee offensive coordinator Alex Golesh was asked Saturday afternoon to single out those who have performed well through two spring football practices for the Volunteers, and he was happy to oblige. "Jabari Small has been really impressive," Golesh said. "We were all excited to see what he can do. As far as guys who have stood out, I would say that Jabari has been one for sure, and probably that O-line group as a whole. "They are knowing how the operation works and are getting on the right people and are playing fast." Small is Tennessee's top returning rusher from last year, having amassed 26 carries for 117 yards as a freshman. His best showing was 48 yards on six carries in the 42-17 thumping of a depleted Vanderbilt, but he did play in all 10 games. - Chattanooga Times Free Press

About 15 minutes into his inaugural Zoom media availability, first-year Clemson running backs coach C.J. Spiller was interrupted by a voice off camera. Then Dabo Swinney appeared in frame. "He ain't ready! He ain't ready!" Swinney said, beaming. Spiller, of course would argue the opposite. He's not merely ready for his first full season as a coach - he's prepared. One of Spiller's most important tasks will be deciding on a pecking order for his position group. Many expect senior Lyn-J Dixon to be the presumptive starter in 2021, but Spiller said March 24 that the depth chart has yet to be established. "It's been a very healthy competition," Spiller said. Dixon's production dipped last season - he averaged 4.5 yards per carry, below his career average of 6.6 yards - but in recent weeks he's earned high praise from Swinney and offensive coordinator Tony Elliott, who previously coached the running backs before moving to tight ends this spring. "I really like what I've seen out of Lyn-J," Swinney said. "He's got a fire under his rear, and I love it. You know, there's a difference between running to a fire and running to get out of one. He's highly motivated." - Charleston Post Courier

Reserve Tennessee tight end Sean Brown has entered the NCAA transfer portal, Knox News has learned. Brown appeared in two games during his Tennessee football career, both in 2019. He signed as a three-star recruit from Coosa High School in Georgia. Tennessee's tight end competition is headlined by returning starter Jacob Warren and Princeton Fant, the team's top pass catcher at the position. Additionally, 2019 starter Austin Pope will return after missing last season following preseason back surgery. Tennessee signed tight ends Trinity Bell and Miles Campbell in December. - Knoxville News Sentinel
