ESPN TOP 100 PRESEASON 2022 CFB PLAYERS (Selected Aug. 17): No. 15. Sean Tucker, RB, Syracuse, Sophomore. Notable 2021 stats: 1,496 yards, 12 TDs. Last year's ranking: NR. At a school known for its running back tradition, Tucker broke the single-season school rushing record in 2021 with 1,496 yards -- so that gives you all the context you need about why he absolutely had to be included on this list. Syracuse has also launched a Heisman campaign for Tucker called "PL34SED," a nod to his jersey number and what he says after every game -- that he is pleased with his performance. - ESPN.com

Since coach Mack Brown returned to North Carolina in 2019, quarterback Sam Howell is the only freshman to start his first game as a Tar Heel. Offensive tackle Zach Rice and receiver Andre Greene will have a chance to add to that number this season. Rice leads the list of six first-year players for Carolina who could earn their way into the rotation and make an impact as freshmen. There's a common theme among those newcomers: Enrolling in January gave them a prolonged transition period and has them poised to play early. "If you just think, they've been through a semester now - three semesters of college really because you've got two in the summer and one in the spring - so they understand going to class," Brown said. "They've been through an offseason program and they've also been through a program with your strength staff, but also your nutritionist. So they've changed who they are with their bodies. And probably, most importantly, they had 15 days of spring practice with their coach. So they're so far ahead of the guys that come in and late June or early July." Rice, a 6-foot-5, 320-pound native of Lynchburg, Va., was ranked as the top offensive tackle in the Class of 2022 by 247Sports.com.

He's competing with Harvard transfer Spencer Rolland to start at right tackle. Even if he does ultimately lose that competition, he's assuredly going to be in the offensive line's rotation. Offensive line coach Jack Bicknell shaped part of his philosophy during his time in the NFL, where he usually had just seven active players so they all had to learn how to play multiple positions, and Rice has quickly taken to it. Fifth-year senior guard Ed Montilus said Rice is "naturally, pretty good." "You can move him around anywhere - guard, tackle - he just has a little bit more to learn with the technique," Montilus said. "But I think he's going to learn it pretty quick because he showed it throughout the spring that he's coming along pretty quick. I think he's doing a good job." - Raleigh News Observer

  08/06/22 - Devaughn CooperrSr/2023, Syracuse, 5-10, 184 (DS#167 WR) + More +

There's been a spotlight this preseason on how Syracuse football's offensive players are adjusting to quarterbacks and running back Sean Tucker are adjusting to new offensive coordinator Robert Anae's pass-heavy offensive scheme that he previously put on display at University of Virginia and BYU. Redshirt senior receiver Devaughn Cooper, heading into his seventh college season, said learning the terminology was the biggest test. "The coaches came in and worked with us slowly. Eased everything in," Cooper said. "I think the receivers are getting a hang of everything, and I think they're getting adjusted pretty good."

While 2022 will only be Cooper's second year at Syracuse, he is a seventh-year college football player. Cooper chose Arizona over Syracuse out of high school, making his way into the receiving rotation as a freshman before an injury forced him to redshirt. He spent two more seasons with the Wildcats before transferring to University of Texas-El Paso, where he redshirted in 2019 and played all eight games in 2020. Cooper transferred to Syracuse just in time for 2021 fall camp. - The Post Standard

Syracuse football coach Dino Babers is shaking things up when it comes to his team's leadership in 2022. During his appearance on the ACC's Gramlich and Mac Lain podcast last week, Babers said Syracuse will have six team captains this season for what he believes is the first time. Three captains have already been selected, while the other three will be voted upon closer to SU's season opener against Louisville on Sept. 3.

Babers said the decision was influenced by players having extended eligibility due to Covid-19, meaning they've been around the program for longer than normal. "Just wanted to make sure that the kids knew who to look up to," Babers said. "And there's some guys that have been here a long time. They know the system, they know the school and they know me." A program spokesman told syracuse.com at ACC Kickoff that linebacker Mikel Jones and offensive lineman Matthew Bergeron had already been selected as team captains. Kicker Andre Szmyt is the third captain to already be chosen, Babers revealed on the podcast co-hosted by Kelly Gramlich and Eric Mac Lain. - The Post-Standard

Syracuse football has only one place to go from its preseason ACC Atlantic Division ranking: up. For the second straight year, the Orange were voted to finish last in their division in the ACC Preseason Poll. This is the last season the conference will play under divisions as it moves to a 3-5-5 scheduling model in 2023. The All-ACC preseason team is voted upon by media who attend ACC Kickoff. There were 164 total voters. Clemson was picked to win the Atlantic and the ACC, while Miami was voted to win the Coastal Division.

This is the fifth consecutive year Clemson has been predicted to finish atop its division even though it was not No. 1 at the end of the 2021 season. Last year, the Orange finished at the bottom of the division with a 5-7 overall record. The program earned just two conference wins against Virginia Tech and Boston College in consecutive weeks. However, three of SU's losses were by three points. Syracuse returns the majority of its 2021 starters, including running back Sean Tucker, quarterback Garrett Shrader, linebacker Mikel Jones and cornerback Garrett Williams. - The Post-Standard

Fans of Sean Tucker will be pleased by Syracuse football's most recent announcement. The program officially launched Tucker's 2022 Heisman Trophy campaign Monday, complete with a hashtag and microsite. The hashtag, "#PL34SED," is a play on Tucker's frequent use of the word when evaluating his performances via Twitter postgame. He even used it in his commitment announcement back in 2020. The website features videos and stories to get to know Tucker better, a link to his official merchandise, his highlights and stats, a list of his awards and the official campaign hype video.

The Heisman Trophy is presented annually to the most outstanding player in college football. It is named for American football player, coach and sportswriter John W. Heisman. Syracuse legend Ernie Davis is the program's only player to ever win the Heisman Trophy. He became the first African-American recipient of the award when he won it in 1961 following a standout season. Davis rushed for 823 yards and 15 touchdowns, breaking multiple program records. Two seasons prior, he'd helped lead SU to its lone national title. Orange quarterback Don McPherson was a runner-up for the trophy in 1987, losing to Notre Dame wide receiver Tim Brown. - The Post-Standard

Forty-five days stand between Louisville football and its season opener against Syracuse, but a member of the Orange's defense has already dished out some some bulletin-board material for the Cardinals to work with. Taking the stage Wednesday at the Atlantic Coast Conference's Kickoff event in Charlotte, North Carolina, Syracuse senior linebacker Mikel Jones was asked for his outlook on U of L's offense heading into Week 1 with dual-threat quarterback Malik Cunningham under center.

"We see it as a good opportunity. We don't think it's going to be a tough challenge," said Jones, who recorded 110 total tackles and 7.5 tackles for loss as a junior. "We're excited to play those guys the first week." It's tough talk from Jones as Louisville will look to stretch its winning streak over Syracuse to four in a row when the two teams kick off at 8 p.m. Sept. 3 inside JMA Wireless Dome in upstate New York. The Cardinals boast a 13-7 overall record against the Orange and are coming off a 41-3 victory against coach Dino Babers' team on Nov. 13, 2021. - Courier Journal
