  12/22/22 - OT Matthew BergeronrJr/2023, Syracuse, 6-5, 318 (DS#4 OT) + More +

Syracuse football starting left tackle Matthew Bergeron will not play in the Pinstripe Bowl, he told syracuse.com Wednesday. Bergeron officially declared for the 2023 NFL Draft on Tuesday via a Twitter post. He did not explicitly state within the post whether he would be opting out of the bowl game or not. His decision makes him the second SU player to miss its first bowl since 2018. Running back Sean Tucker, who declared for the draft Saturday, is also not playing in the Pinstripe Bowl but will attend the game with his team. Bergeron joined teammates Chris Elmore (FB), Garrett Williams (CB) and Tucker in having declared for the draft. A captain and four-year starter, Bergeron helped pave the way for another 1,000-yard season from Tucker this year and a total 4,399 yards from the SU offense. - The Post-Standard

On Wednesday, the ACC revealed the list of representatives attending the conference's football preseason media event next week. Four representatives from each of the conference's 14 programs will convene in Charlotte, North Carolina, next week for the 2022 ACC Kickoff. Syracuse football is bringing coach Dino Babers, offensive lineman Matthew Bergeron, linebacker Mikel Jones and quarterback Garrett Shrader.

The event will be the first time media has the opportunity to speak with Babers about the conference's new 3-5-5 scheduling model and conference realignment rumors. Bergeron is entering his fourth season with the team having made 28 consecutive starts at offensive tackle. The last 20 of those have been at left tackle, which the senior switched to midway through the 2020 season due to injuries on the offensive line. He was an All-ACC honorable mention last year and won Syracuse's Bill Maxwell Award, given to the most improved offensive player. - The Post-Standard

Even under new scheduling, Syracuse football will face one of the ACC's historic powerhouses each season. The conference on Tuesday announced its shift to a 3-5-5 scheduling model starting in 2023. The model eliminates the Atlantic and Coastal divisions, instead guaranteeing that programs face three opponents annually and the other 10 programs twice every four years. That means within a player's tenure they'll have the chance to face each ACC school at home and away. Syracuse landed Boston College, Pittsburgh and Florida State as its three permanent matchups.

Boston College and Pitt were almost guarantees for the Orange. Both are regional opponents who Syracuse already faces each year - Pitt is the Orange's divisional crossover - and athletic director John Wildhack hinted at Syracuse continuing to face both back in May. Syracuse is 5-4 against Boston College since entering the ACC. The Orange beat Jeff Hafley's team 21-6 last season but lost a close one in 2020. SU has found less success against Pitt while in the same conference. It's lost all but one matchup, though seven of those eight losses have been by two or fewer touchdowns. - The Post-Standard

2021 ALL-ACC FOOTBALL HONORABLE MENTION (COACHES/MEDIA): OT - Matthew Bergeron, Syracuse, 37 votes,...Bergeron was the only Syracuse offensive lineman to start all-12 games at the same position this season, anchoring the left side of the line that saw three different starting guards next to him. Still, Syracuse managed to average four yards per carry off the left tackle position, which ranked atop the ACC. He graded out as Syracuse's top offensive lineman this season. - Syracuse Football
