Garrett Shrader hit Oronde Gadsden II for a 25-yard touchdown pass with seven seconds left to lift Syracuse to a 32-29 win over Purdue on Saturday. That touchdown throw capped a wild fourth quarter of dramatic lead changes. Syracuse led 10-9 after three quarters and outscored the Boilermakers 22-20 in the final period. The Orange improved to 3-0, its best start since 2018. Purdue fell to 1-2. Aidan O'Connell's 12-yard touchdown pass to tight end Payne Durham with 51 seconds left in the fourth quarter gave the Boilermakers a 29-25 advantage and seemed to seal it for Purdue.

O'Connell, who completed 38 of 54 passes for 415 yards and three touchdowns, threw for two fourth-quarter scores to rescue the Boilermakers from a 10-point deficit. Charlie Jones caught 11 passes for 188 yards and one score. But before those O'Connell heroics, Syracuse scored two touchdowns within nine seconds and led 25-15 midway through the fourth quarter. A scrambling 46-yard touchdown pass from Shrader to Gadsden on fourth-and-one gave Syracuse an 18-15 advantage after Shrader ran for a 2-point conversion. That touchdown happened with 8:17 left in the game. On Purdue's next possession, SU's Jatius Geer wrapped up O'Connell as the Purdue quarterback attempted a pass. The ball wobbled into the hands of Orange defensive end Caleb Okechukwu, who trotted 17 yards into the end zone. - Indiana/AP College Football

The 6-foot-4 junior completed 20 of his 23 passes for 287 yards as the Orange improved to 2-0 for the first time since 2018. Freshman Zion Turner went 14-of-17 for 92 yards and a touchdown and Nate Carter had 71 yards rushing for UConn (1-2) which has not beaten an FBS team since 2019.

Syracuse never trailed and scored on all five of its first-half drives, highlighted by a 47-yard strike from Shrader to Damien Alford which put the Orange up 17-0 and an 18-yard TD pass to Courtney Jackson just before halftime that made it 27-7. The Orange put up 465 total yards and held UConn to just 202. The Huskies scored on two big plays, a 28-yard second-quarter touchdown run by Devontae Houston and a 56-yard catch-and-run by receiver Aaron Turner in the third quarter.   Syracuse football fullback Chris Elmore and linebacker Stefon Thompson are both out for the season with injuries they suffered in SU's season-opening 31-7 win over Louisville. Orange coach Dino Babers announced the news during his Monday press conference. "You're talking about a guy who's been a captain two years in (Elmore), and (Thompson) was right on the edge of becoming a captain for us," Babers said. "Both those guys have unbelievable leadership skills, and we expect them to continue to be leaders on and off the football field for this football team throughout the 2022 season." Both players left the field in the first half of play against the Cardinals and returned to the sidelines on crutches.

Elmore has battled injuries in the past. The sixth-year has played all across the field for the Orange, including stints on the offensive and defensive lines. He missed four games in 2021, allowing him to redshirt the season and return this year. Babers admitted he is unsure what it will take for Elmore to be allowed to return for a seventh season with the program should he choose, especially with the eligibility changes created due to COVID-19. - The Post-Standard

Sean Tucker rushed for 98 yards and scored two touchdowns, one on a 55-yard catch-and-run, and quarterback Garrett Shrader threw for two scores and ran for another as Syracuse beat Louisville 31-7 in the season opener for both teams on Saturday night. Louisville had won the past three meetings in the series - all at Cardinal Stadium, -averaging 42.3 points, and was 7-1 against the Orange since joining the Atlantic Coast Conference in 2014. The script was flipped in this one as Syracuse built an early 17-7 lead behind a new-look offense, and the Orange defense never let Louisville quarterback Malik Cunningham get rolling. He was intercepted twice in the third quarter and lost a fumble early in the fourth, and the Orange converted two of the turnovers into touchdowns. Last year, he accounted for six touchdowns against Syracuse in the first half of a 41-3 victory.

Shrader finished 18 of 25 for 237 yards passing and gained 95 yards rushing on 16 carries. Cunningham finished 16 of 22 for 152 yards passing, rushed for 34 yards on 13 carries, and was sacked three times. Syracuse finished 5-7 last year and closed the season with three straight lopsided losses to miss the postseason. That led to an overhaul of the staff. The architects of Virginia's potent offense - offensive coordinator Robert Anae and quarterbacks coach Jason Beck - were hired in the offseason to jumpstart the offense and their imprint showed up right away in this one. Shrader completed 7 of 8 passes for 117 yards and one touchdown in the first quarter - the biggest play the 55-yard catch-and-run by Tucker down the right side for a 10-0 lead after Andre Szmyt had given Syracuse an early lead with a 31-yard field goal. - Syracuse/AP College Football

There's been a spotlight this preseason on how Syracuse football's offensive players are adjusting to quarterbacks and running back Sean Tucker are adjusting to new offensive coordinator Robert Anae's pass-heavy offensive scheme that he previously put on display at University of Virginia and BYU. Redshirt senior receiver Devaughn Cooper, heading into his seventh college season, said learning the terminology was the biggest test. "The coaches came in and worked with us slowly. Eased everything in," Cooper said. "I think the receivers are getting a hang of everything, and I think they're getting adjusted pretty good."

While 2022 will only be Cooper's second year at Syracuse, he is a seventh-year college football player. Cooper chose Arizona over Syracuse out of high school, making his way into the receiving rotation as a freshman before an injury forced him to redshirt. He spent two more seasons with the Wildcats before transferring to University of Texas-El Paso, where he redshirted in 2019 and played all eight games in 2020. Cooper transferred to Syracuse just in time for 2021 fall camp. - The Post Standard

Syracuse football coach Dino Babers is shaking things up when it comes to his team's leadership in 2022. During his appearance on the ACC's Gramlich and Mac Lain podcast last week, Babers said Syracuse will have six team captains this season for what he believes is the first time. Three captains have already been selected, while the other three will be voted upon closer to SU's season opener against Louisville on Sept. 3.

Babers said the decision was influenced by players having extended eligibility due to Covid-19, meaning they've been around the program for longer than normal. "Just wanted to make sure that the kids knew who to look up to," Babers said. "And there's some guys that have been here a long time. They know the system, they know the school and they know me." A program spokesman told syracuse.com at ACC Kickoff that linebacker Mikel Jones and offensive lineman Matthew Bergeron had already been selected as team captains. Kicker Andre Szmyt is the third captain to already be chosen, Babers revealed on the podcast co-hosted by Kelly Gramlich and Eric Mac Lain. - The Post-Standard
