Syracuse football cornerback Garrett Williams will miss the remainder of the 2022 season with a knee injury, coach Dino Babers said Monday. Williams left Syracuse's 41-24 loss against Notre Dame in the second quarter. He was injured on Ja'Had Carter's interception return near the SU bench and was later using crutches on the sideline. Williams tore his ACL, Babers said. The cornerback had previously suffered a thigh bruise in the Orange's win over N.C. State in Week 7.

He also went down in the second quarter of that game. Williams did not play against Clemson due to that injury despite warming up and being in uniform. "He is one of our leaders," Babers said. "Garrett is a cool cat. He's Syracuse through and through. Nothing but Orange running through his veins, and he wants nothing but the best for his family, and we want nothing but the best for him. We will stand beside him, and there's no doubt he will stand beside us." Isaiah Johnson has been the predominant for replacement for Williams in the time he's missed thus far. - The Post-Standard

Syracuse defensive back Garrett Williams, who led the Atlantic Coast Conference in pass breakups in each of the previous two seasons, will miss the rest of this season for the No. 22 Orange because of a knee injury. Coach Dino Babers said Monday that Williams has a torn anterior cruciate ligament. Williams was injured in the second quarter against North Carolina State on Oct. 15 and didn't play in the Orange's 27-21 loss at Clemson just over a week ago. He was hurt again in the first half of a 41-24 home loss to Notre Dame on Saturday and needed help leaving the field and entering the medical tent. He returned to the sideline on crutches. "Garrett wanted to stay in, Garrett wanted to play, he's a competitor." Babers said. "But sometimes we've got to protect people from themselves, and I wanted to make sure I protected my guy." Williams has 36 tackles, tied for third on the team, 1.5 tackles for loss, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery, three pass breakups and two timely interceptions that helped spur the Orange (6-2, 3-1 ACC) to a 6-0 start before their two-game skid. - AP College Football

Garrett Shrader hit Oronde Gadsden II with a pair of touchdown passes, Sean Tucker scored on a 25-yard run late, and No. 18 Syracuse beat No. 15 North Carolina State 24-9 on Saturday to remain unbeaten and become eligible for the postseason. Syracuse (6-0, 3-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) started a season with six wins for just the third time since 1935, taking advantage of the absence of the Wolfpack's injured star quarterback, Devin Leary. Hurt last week in a win over Florida State, Leary was declared out for the rest of the season before the game. The preseason conference player of the year suffered a torn pectoral muscle and will undergo surgery next week in Florida. He's expected to make a full recovery. The Orange took the opening kickoff and scored in short fashion, driving 65 yards in five plays in just 2:04. Tucker's 38-yard run set up Shrader's 12-yard touchdown pass to Gadsden, his fourth scoring catch of the season. North Carolina State (5-2, 1-2), with Charleston Southern graduate transfer Jack Chambers making his first start at quarterback, struggled on offense.

Syracuse outgained N.C. State 113-55 in the first half and the Orange's 10-3 lead at the break almost seemed too much to overcome in front of a raucous sellout crowd in the newly renamed JMA Wireless Dome. Still, Chambers got the Wolfpack rolling on the first possession of the second half. He hit Christopher Toudle for 21 yards on a third-and-10 play and an 8-yard completion to Thayer Thomas moved the ball to the Syracuse 12. But a bad snap and a false start penalty on consecutive plays forced the Wolfpack to settle for Christopher Dunn's 22-yard field goal. Shrader's 17-yard scoring pass to Gadsden late in the third boosted the Syracuse lead to 17-6. The Wolfpack couldn't answer as Chambers, who had moved the team to the Orange 8-yard line, was sacked leading to a third field goal. Tucker's touchdown run came with just over 2 minutes left to ice the game. - Syracuse/AP College Football

When the Atlantic Coast Conference preseason picks were announced, the Syracuse Orange didn't pay attention. They knew where they stood: last. Surprise! Nearing the midpoint of the season, the Orange (5-0, 2-0) are unbeaten, having their best start since 1987 and ranked No. 18 in the AP Top 25. "Every year is different, every team is different, and I just feel like they feel like they can," coach Dino Babers said. "Now, we've got to continue to see. The proof is in the pudding, but so far, so good." Last season, Syracuse finished 5-7 and suffered three straight losses by three points. So far this season, the Orange are 2-0 in nailbiters: 32-29 over Purdue when Garrett Shrader threw a 25-yard touchdown pass to Oronde Gadsden II with 7 seconds left, and 22-20 against Virginia thanks to a a 31-yard field goal with 74 seconds left by Andre Szmyt - his career-high fifth of the game.

So, how has the most penalized team in the nation - averaging 10 a game, tied with Cincinnati - remained perfect? It's a combination of things, and luck is probably among them. The offense guided by new coordinator Robert Anae is tied for ninth nationally with No. 8 Oklahoma State, scoring on 23 of 24 trips (15 TDs, eight field goals) into the red zone. The swarming 3-3-5 defense, aka "The Mob," tops the ACC, allowing 271.6 yards and 14 points per game. And Szmyt, with the oversight of new special teams coach Bob Ligashesky, has regained his form from four years ago, when he was voted the best kicker in the nation. Szmyt has missed only once in 11 field goal attempts. The defense, led by linebackers Mikel Jones and Marlowe Wax and defensive back Garrett Williams, indicated early that this season might be different in a dominating 31-7 season-opening victory over Louisville at home. - AP College Football

Sean Tucker ran for three touchdowns and a career-high 232 yards, Garrett Shrader threw for one score and ran for another, and Syracuse defeated Wagner 59-0 on Saturday to remain unbeaten. With the win, the Orange moved to 5-0, the program’s first 5-0 start since 1987 when Syracuse went 11-0. Wagner (0-4), a Championship Subdivision team, has now lost 24 straight games and is winless under third-year head coach Tom Masella. The Seahawks have not won a game since beating Long Island University on Sept. 28, 2019 and have been outscored 152-14 over their past three games. Shrader ran it in from the 1-yard line just over three minutes in to begin the rout, and Tucker broke off a 60-yard run six minutes later. Tucker also scored on runs of four and six yards, all coming in the first half.

The Orange led 49-0 at halftime. Both teams agreed to then play two, 10-minute quarters after halftime due to the lopsided score. The Orange amassed 631 yards of total offense and its defense limited the Seahawks to 50 yards on 38 plays, four first downs, and sacked quarterback Ryan Kraft three times. Cornerback Duce Chestnut intercepted Kraft and returned it 28 yards for a score. Shrader completed all 17 passes of his passes for 238 yards and spread the ball to eight different receivers before being removed after three quarters. Freshman LeQuint Allen rushed for 112 yards, including a 90-yard run, and scored from eight yards out. Kraft was 2-of-6 passing for just 19 yards. - AP College Football

Andre Szmyt knocked in five field goals, including the 31-yard game-winner with just over a minute left, and Syracuse held off Virginia's second-half comeback to beat the Cavaliers 22-20 on Friday night. Syracuse led 16-0 at halftime, but Virginia recorded three second-half touchdowns to take a 20-19 lead with six minutes remaining in the game. The Orange (4-0, 2-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) won their first four for the first time since 2018 despite committing their first four turnovers of the season. Brennan Armstrong threw for 138 yards and a 4-yard touchdown to Lavel Davis Jr. with 5:51 remaining for Virginia. Syracuse responded with a 62-yard drive to retake the lead on Szmyt's final field goal. Virginia's final drive resulted in a turnover on downs. The matchup reunited two of Syacuse's first-year assistants, Robert Anae and Jason Beck, with their old squad.

Anae and Beck coached at Virginia (2-2, 0-1 ACC) for the past five seasons before joining Dino Babers' staff this offseason. Syracuse started the game strong, with Trebor Pena returning the opening kickoff 57 yards into Virginia territory, and the Orange punching it in five plays later with Garrett Shrader's 17-yard rushing touchdown. Virginia kicker Brendan Farrell missed first-quarter field goal attempts from 51 and 49 yards, respectively. The second miss came after the Cavaliers had taken over at the Orange's 37-yard line following a Sean Tucker fumble. For the second straight week, Tucker was unable to find many openings, finishing with 60 yards rushing on 21 attempts. UVA got back in the game early in the second half when Armstrong pitched to Thompson at the 1-yard line for a touchdown. The Cavaliers, trailing 16-6, wanted to attempt a 2-point conversion, but an illegal substitution penalty forced them to kick the extra point instead. - Syracuse/AP College Football
