2020 PAYCOM JIM THORPE AWARD PRESEASON WATCH LIST: Israel Mukuamu, South Carolina, Jr.,...Mukuamu, a 6-4, 205-pound defensive back from Bossier City, La., was an AP second-team All-SEC selection a year ago. He led the Gamecocks with four interceptions, including three in the upset win over third-ranked Georgia. A starter in 14-consecutive games, Mukuamu was named to the 2020 Lott IMPACT Trophy preseason watch list. Last week, he was named to Phil Steele's preseason second-team All-SEC unit and was a preseason fourth-team All-American, according to Steele. - South Carolina Football

Mukuamu has played mostly corner his first two years and became known as a good one last year, when he intercepted Georgia's Jake Fromm three times and led the Gamecocks to one of the biggest wins in their history. But at 6-4, could Mukuamu's height be of better use elsewhere? There has been talk of him being moved to safety, and he has started two games there. With corner Jaycee Horn already locking down one side of the field and safety needing help after two years of middling production, does Will Muschamp have to move one of his best guys to a position of need? - The Post and Courier

2020 PRESEASON LOU GROZA COLLEGIATE PLACE-KICKER AWARD WATCH LIST: Parker White, South Carolina,...White only missed one field goal attempt from within 50 yards last year. His long distance kick came as part of a 3-for-3 field goal performance vs Appalachian State, a mark he also hit against Alabama. But it was his 24 yarder in double overtime against Georgia that fans will remember best, outdueling last year's Groza winner Rodrigo Blankenship. - Lou Groza Collegiate Place-Kicker Award

Oklahoma redshirt freshman Spencer Rattler hasn't officially been named the Sooners' starting quarterback. The media still voted Rattler as the Big 12's preseason Newcomer of the Year. The Big 12 Conference announced its preseason awards on Thursday. And Rattler, the former five-star prospect, joined Oklahoma State running back Chuba Hubbard (Offensive Player of the Year) and West Virginia defensive lineman Darius Stills (Defensive Player of the Year) in winning an individual preseason honor.

Rattler played three games last season, completing 7-of-11 passing attempts for 81 yards and a touchdown. He entered OU's games against South Dakota, Texas Tech and LSU. The Phoenix Pinnacle High School product came to OU as the consensus No. 1 quarterback in the 2019 recruiting class. He sat behind graduate transfer quarterback Jalen Hurts last year as the team's co-backup with Tanner Mordecai. Rattler and Mordecai are expected to compete to replace Hurts this fall. - Norman Transcript

  07/14/20 - Tavien FeasterSr/2020, South Carolina, 5-11, 221 (DS#31 RB) + More +

Tavien Feaster went undrafted following his senior season at South Carolina. After that, all the running back wanted was a chance. Feaster is getting that chance with the Jacksonville Jaguars, who signed the Spartanburg native in April. Feaster is leaving for Jacksonville on Friday and will begin workouts with the team next week. He is thankful the Jaguars were willing to give him a shot. "To be honest with you, the draft is what it is. I asked for an opportunity, not the red carpet," Feaster said at a drive-by community event he hosted in Spartanburg over the weekend. "I'm blessed with the opportunity to get out there and play and show my skills. I'm ready."

Feaster had several teams reach out to him after going undrafted before opting to sign with the Jaguars. He will be a part of a group of several backs battling to back up star Leonard Fournette. Feaster is one of three rookie running backs Jacksonville added this offseason, joining fellow undrafted free agents Nathan Cottrell of Georgia Tech and James Robinson of Illinois State. "We had a lot of teams reach out, and during the process we just decided (Jacksonville) was the best place for me to go compete for a spot," Feaster said. "It's a good team to go down there and play for, great weather in the state of Florida, and I'm going to compete." - The State

If not for the coronavirus pandemic that has put the 2020 college football season in peril, University of Arkansas football fans would be stoked for Week 2. The Razorbacks, aiming to rebound under first-year Coach Sam Pittman from a dreadful three-year funk, are scheduled to play Notre Dame for the first time Sept. 12. Events from last week began to cast doubt on whether that game will be played, as reports were brewing that the Atlantic Coast Conference - with which the independent Notre Dame is affiliated with on a scheduling basis - might follow the Big Ten and Pac-12 in planning for a conference-only football schedule this fall.

The SEC is scheduled to have in-person meetings with league athletic directors on Monday, sources told the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, at the SEC office in Birmingham, Ala., to discuss the fall season in football and other matters. No firm decisions are expected from the meeting. SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey said this on Thursday: "The Southeastern Conference will continue to meet regularly with our campus leaders in the coming weeks, guided by medical advisers, to make the important decisions necessary to determine the best path forward related to the SEC fall sports. We recognize the challenges ahead and know the well-being of our student-athletes, coaches, staff and fans must remain at the forefront of those decisions." - Northwest Arkansas Times

Marcus Lattimore spoke loudly on the football field. He's speaking louder now. "We're trying at South Carolina to fight, just like everybody else in America, to fight for equality. These constant reminders that plague South Carolina, of our history, are what holds us back," Lattimore said on Wednesday. "Being reminded of that every day when a black student passes by the Strom Thurmond Center, I don't see that as inclusion, I don't see that as equality, I don't see that as advancing as a society." Lattimore lent his support to a movement started by 2014 USC graduate Heather Armel, an online business consultant in Denver who also does freelance graphic designs. Armel began a petition asking USC president Bob Caslen to rename the Strom Thurmond Wellness & Fitness Center on campus because of Thurmond's segregationist background.

Armel contacted Lattimore and other USC football alums, they threw their support behind it and Lattimore tweeted a statement on Wednesday afternoon. "To celebrate well-known segregationist Strom Thurmond's legacy by keeping his name on our Wellness Center sends a contradicting message to our black students," he said. "We can no longer be held back by those whose ideals represent division. We must continue to fight for equality." His statement was copied into tweets from Alshon Jeffery (Philadelphia Eagles), Mike Davis (Carolina Panthers) and Damiere Byrd (New England Patriots), among others. - The Post and Courier

Athletes will have their body temperature checked daily and will be screened for symptoms daily as part of the University of Arkansas' covid-19 protocol. Athletes will be tested for coronavirus if they meet certain criteria, including a fever of above 100.4 degrees or if they exhibit symptoms of the virus. "That's following CDC guidelines, that's following guidelines the SEC medical task force provided to us," UA athletics director Hunter Yurachek said Wednesday. A 14-day quarantine will be required for those who test positive, during which time a team doctor will monitor their condition. A quarantine might also be required for those who have interacted with the sick individual.

"I would foresee the roommates of that athlete being quarantined along with them," said Dave England, director of sports medicine for the Razorbacks. A quarantine will also be required of athletes who come to Fayetteville from outside the U.S. or one of four domestic hot spots - the states of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut, and the city of New Orleans. Some athletes from hot spots have already entered into their quarantine period. "If somebody is coming from a hot spot, they have to contact the Department of Health themselves, and they are required to be in quarantine for 14 days," England said. - Northwest Arkansas Times

You could put together a season highlight tape of this guy from just one game last season - USC's overtime upset of Georgia in Athens. In what has to be one of the greatest cornerback performances in SEC history, Mukuamu intercepted UGA quarterback Jake Fromm three times. One of those picks he returned 53 yards for a touchdown. His third and final pick came in overtime. He's a big (6-foot-4, 205 pounds), rangy DB who obviously knows how to make plays. - Gainesville Sun

  05/01/20 - Adam PrenticerSr/2021, South Carolina, 6-0, 251 (DS#5 FB) + More +

He isn't anywhere near the front of the line when it comes to being a South Carolina football legend before he ever plays a down. Every year's recruiting class by itself brings a new phalanx of starry-eyed fans swearing that this guy will be the one to finally take the Gamecocks to the promised land. But something about Adam Prentice feels different. He's 23 with a degree in civil engineering. At six feet and 245 pounds, calves that look like shot puts implanted in the backs of his legs, he resembles a walking barbell. It's hard to imagine somebody with just 18 rushes for 65 yards, 18 catches for 115 yards and one touchdown in five seasons as the key to the Gamecocks' offense. Yet hear him talk about his role. Hear his coaches talk about it.

"A guy like Prentice was a guy that was a little bit more than a sixth lineman," said offensive coordinator Mike Bobo, Prentice's head coach at Colorado State and a large reason why Prentice chose USC for his final season. "He could do a lot of stuff, he could play wing for us, he could insert, he could catch the ball. "Your 'move guy' is what we would call him," USC head coach Will Muschamp said, alluding to Prentice's ability at fullback and tight end. "But obviously he's going to contribute a lot on special teams as well." Prentice paused to consider the question during spring practice. "Fifty-fifty fullback and running back," he answered. "More tight end/wing, gut position and fullback. Kind of just depends." That versatility is part of what's made Prentice the player to watch when football returns. He may not tote the ball a lot, may not reach the end zone like the two players he is already being compared to, USC-to-NFL stars Patrick DiMarco and Hayden Hurst. - Rock Hill Herald

  04/24/20 - Javon KinlawSr/2020, South Carolina, 6-5, 324 (DS#2 DT) + More +

So many saw this opportunity for Javon Kinlaw, but he had to trust himself before it could become reality. It's here. Kinlaw was the 14th player selected in the first round of the NFL Draft on Thursday by the San Francisco 49ers, completing his journey from a homeless child on the streets of Washington, D.C., to a multi-millionaire professional football player. Kinlaw's contract will be finalized in the coming days, but last year's 14th pick, Atlanta Falcons guard Chris Lindstrom, signed a four-year, $14.6 million deal, including an $8.6 million signing bonus. Kinlaw also signed an endorsement deal with Gillette just before the draft.

The 6-6, 310-pound defensive lineman was once a teenager who took a Greyhound bus from Washington to Goose Creek, seeking a fresh start. He turned into an All-American at South Carolina, and an addition to an exclusive club. Kinlaw is the 14th first-round NFL Draft pick from USC in its history. He is the first since Hayden Hurst went to Baltimore with the 25th pick in 2018. "I think in life, sometimes a young man just needs an opportunity, just needs somebody to believe in him," USC coach Will Muschamp said of Kinlaw. "It's an unbelievable story, really, it is. That's a young man who's been put in some tough situations and continued to fight, to persevere. He's an example to us all." - Rock Hill Herald

Rattler and Mordecai have appeared in a combined 11 collegiate games. Rattler, who's already being given odds at winning the Heisman Trophy, is considered the favorite for the job after appearing in just three games. Face time with Riley - no pun intended - is important as they sit atop OU's depth chart for the first time. "One thing that neither one of them has a ton of right now is live, game experience. They would have gotten better throughout spring," Riley said. "They're competitive guys, they're self starters. They're at home working their tails off right now." OU's last three quarterbacks transferred into the program with some level of experience before getting more acclimated. Either Rattler or Mordecai is set to become Riley's first QB at OU who was recruited straight from high school.

The idea of them missing an entire spring of practice, with the possibility existing that summer workouts could remain off campus, might make some coaches nervous. Riley's trying to approach this as an extended summer period, where coaches' access is strictly limited. And although Rattler and Mordecai's don't have many game repetitions to lean on, they're steeped in the system. He's confident in both of them. "You'd like to have a bunch of receivers and a bunch of group workouts, and not all of those things are possible right now, and we get that," Riley said. "But also, there's a chance to continue to study film, continue to work on themselves physically, continue to work on the fundamental parts of this game … Anytime you're limited on what you can do, you put a greater focus into those other areas, and sometimes you end up better in those areas than you would've without it." - Norman Transcript
